Doing good to others out of compassion is good, but the Seva [service] of all beings in the spirit of the

Lord is better.


Who will give the world light? Sacrifice in the past has been the law, it will be, alas, for ages to come.

all. Buddhas by the hundred are necessary with eternal love and pity.

If God wished that people should follow one religion, why have so many religions sprung up? Methods

have been vainly tried to force one religion upon everyone. Even when the sword was lifted to make all

people follow one religion, history tells us that ten religions sprang up in its place.

One religion cannot suit all. Man is the product of two forces, action and reaction, which make him

think. If such forces did not exercise a man's mind, he would be incapable of thinking. Man is a creature

who thinks;... and as soon as his thinking power goes, he becomes no better than an animal. Who would

like such a man? God forbid that any such state should come upon the people of India.

Variety in unity is necessary to keep man as man. Variety ought to be preserved in everything; for as

long as there is variety the world will exist.

"It is the young, the strong, and healthy, of sharp intellect that will reach the Lord," say the Vedas.

This is the time to decide your future--while you possess the energy of youth, not when you are worn

out and jaded, but in the freshness and vigour of youth.

Work--this is the time; for the freshest, the untouched, and unsmelled flowers alone are to be laid at

the feet of the Lord, and such He receives. Rouse yourselves, therefore, or life is short. There are

greater works to be done than aspiring to become lawyers and picking quarrels and such things. A far

greater work is this sacrifice of yourselves for the benefit of your race, for the welfare of humanity .

Young men, my hope is in you. Will you respond to the call of your nation? Each one of you has a

glorious future if you dare believe me. Have a tremendous faith in yourselves, like the faith I had

when I was a child, and which I am working out now. Have that faith, each one of you, in yourself--

that eternal power is lodged in every soul--and you will revive the whole of the country.

WHAT ARE THE DEFECTS OF OUR PRACTICE OF RELIGION?

"Think of the last six hundred or seven hundred years of degradation when grown-up men by hundreds

have been discussing for years whether we should drink a glass of water with the right hand or the left,

whether the hand should be washed three times or four times, whether we should gargle five or six

times. ...

There is a danger of our religion getting into the kitchen. ...Our religion is in the kitchen. Our God is the

cooking-pot, and our religion is, "Don't touch me, I am holy."

It is a sure sign of softening of the brain when the mind cannot grasp the higher problems of life; all

originality is lost, the mind has lost all its strength, its activity, and its power of thought, and just tries to

go round and round the smallest curve it can find.

This state of things has first to be thrown overboard, and then we must stand up, be active and strong;

and then we shall recognize our heritage of that infinite treasure, the treasure our forefathers have leftfor us... ".

The householder should be devoted to God. The Knowledge of God should be the goal of his [or her]

life. Yet he must work constantly, perform all his duties. He must give up the fruits of hhis actions to

God.

Do your svadharma, your duties. This is the truth, the truth of truths.


Do you ask anything from your children in return for what you have given them? It is your duty to

work for them, and there the matter ends.

In whatever you do for a particular person, city or state, assume the same attitude towards it as you

have towards your children. Expect nothing in return.

your baby and fondle it and play with it and behave towards it as gently as if it were her own child. Butas soon as you give her notice to quit she is ready to start off bag and baggage. ... Even so you are to be

WHAT IS EDUCATION?

To me the very essence of education is concentration of mind, not the collecting of facts. If I had to do

my education over again, and had any voice in the matter, I would not study facts at all. I would

develop the power of concentration and detachment, and then with a perfect instrument I could

collect facts at will. Side by side, in the child, should be developed the power of concentration and

detachment.

HOW SHOULD PARENTS TRAIN THEIR CHILDREN?

Negative thoughts weaken men. Do you not find that where parents are constantly taxing their sons

to read and write, telling them they will never learn anything, and calling them fools and so forth, the

latter do actually turn out to be so in many cases?

If you speak kind words to boys and encourage them, they are bound to improve in time. What holds

good of childre, also holds good of children in the region of higher thoughts. If you can give them

positive ideas, people will grow up to be men and learn to stand on their own legs.

Look upon every man, woman, and every one as God.

You cannot help anyone, you can only serve; serve the children of the Lord, serve the Lord Himself, if

you have the privilege.

Do service only as a worship. I should see God in the poor, and it is for my salvation that I go and

worship them. The poor and the miserable are for our salvation, so that we may serve the Lord, coming

in the shape of the diseased, coming in the shape of the lunatic, the leper, and the sinner!

Bold are my words; and let me repeat that it is the greatest privilege of our life that we are allowed to

serve the Lord in all these shapes.

Give up the idea that by ruling over others you can do any good to them.

Bring all light into the world. Light, bring light! Let light come unto everyone; the task will not be finished

till everyone has reached the Lord.

This is the one cause of misery: we are attached. We are being caught. Therefore says the Gita: "Work

constantly. Work, but be not attached; be not caught.

Reserve unto yourself the power of detaching yourself from everything, however beloved, however

much the soul might yearn for it, however great the pangs of misery you feel if you are going to leave

it. Still, reserve the power of leaving it whenever you want.

HOW CAN WE BE FREE?

Strength, strength is what the Upanishads speak to me from every page. This is the one great thing to

remember. Will sin cure sin, weakness cure weakness? Strength, O man, strength, say the Upanishads.

Stand up and be strong.

What we need is strength. Be free from the bonds of nature, be free from weakness!

You are the Self, and that must be realized. Now the Spirit is seeing itself as the body. That must stop.

The moment you begin to realize that, you are released.

Do not spend your energy in talking, but meditate in silence.

of the outside world disturb you.

The power is with the silent ones, who only live and love and then withdraw their personality.

They never say "me" and "mine".

HOW CAN WE BECOME GOOD AND GREAT?

What we want is strength, so believe in yourselves. Make your nerves strong.

What we want is muscles of iron and nerves of steel. Stand on your own feet and be Men.

Three things are necessary for great achievements. First, feel from the heart. ... Do you feel? Do you

feel that millions and millions of the descendants of Gods and of sages have become next-door

neighbours to brutes? Do you feel that millions are starving today, and millions have been starving for

ages? Does it make you restless? Does it make you sleepless?

...That is the first step.

Vivekananda's Inspiring Words--1

WHO IS SWAMI VIVEKANANDA?

Swami Vivekananda (12 January 1863--4 July 1902) was the prophet of the modern world. He was

perfectly rational, and would never believe in anything unless he himself experienced it. His search for

God or Truth began even when he was a child. His search led him to Sri Ramakrishna.

Under his teacher, Sri Ramakrishna, he got training in spirituality. Vivekananda attained the highest

experience in spiritual life very soon. Later, he had countless spiritual experiences every day. He had

nirvikalpa samadhi several times. Vivekananda then travelled all over India, and participated in the

Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893.

Vivekananda declared the necessity of the harmony of religions there. He was the first prophet to

declare this. Apart from this, Vivekananda had the heart of the universal mother. He wept to see the

pitiable condition of the people--some suffering from want of food and clothing, some suffering from

want of peace, some suffering from other problems.

Why were people suffering? Ignorance was the answer. Vivekananda understood that the solution to all

problems was in understanding our true nature. We are not the body, or the mind. We are the eternal

Self, the Atman. Not knowing our reality, we hold on to false things and go on suffering in life.Vivekananda therefore called upon humanity to give up negative notions and know the truth about

ourselves. His words are powerful--coming as they are from the mouth of the prophet. Let us read them,

and emulate them in our lives.

This life is precious. We are wasting this precious life in ordinary, meaningless things and enjoyments.

Let us seek something meaningful. Let us go forward to know greater things. Let us once and for all give

up the idea that we are sinners, useless people, and so on. Let us know that we are the Atman.

WHAT IS FAITH?

Losing faith in oneself means losing faith in God.

Know that all sins and all weakness can be summed up in that one word: weakness.

It is weakness that is the motive power in all evil doing; it is weakness that makes them injure others;

it is weakness that makes them manifest what they are not in reality.
