0. Mission

By investigating and documenting selected endangered languages and varieties, the Commission Vanishing Languages and Cultural Heritage (VLACH) aims to contribute to the academic knowledge of the diversity of linguistic heritage. In principle, the Commission is concerned with global phenomena of language loss and is therefore potentially interested in all endangered varieties. It attempts to develop strategies of language preservation and is committed to multilingualism as well as to the nurture of cultural heritage. In terms of contents, the Commission examines subject areas such as inter- and innerlinguistic variation, language shift, language transfer and all phenomena concerning disappearing or endangered linguistic varieties, cultures and identities.

1. Description of multimedia sources

Field research materials are documented in archives and collections under different formats. The main sources for VLACH are for the moment:

ISLSSL (EthnoThesaurus at the University of Jena) o structure:

Annotation (Mappa Campi, ELAN files, excel content files, word files) Audio Foto Video

o file names: year_month_day (unit no.) Region - Narrator Short content (from big to small) example: 2016_04_30 (8) Trabzon - Melidis About tobacco production

LAZAR (Universities of Berlin, Jena, Hannover, Göttingen) o VLACHs field researchers are invited to store and elaborate their material in LAZAR o structure and details: https://lazardb.gbv.de

Phonogrammarchiv (Austrian Academy of Sciences, Vienna) o structure and details: www.phonogrammarchiv.at

unpublished private collections of the VLACH members and colleagues VLACH presents following types of media on its platform:

Texts: o intro texts about the languages and varieties (html) o transcriptions + translation file

as subtitle the A (audio) and V (video) material as pdf for download

o cite boxes o copyright icons o captions (html) for pictures (jpg)

Audio (mp3)

Foto o jpg (when pictures only) o mp4 (when slide show)

Video (mp4)

2. Annotation

2.1. Annotating with ELAN

The program can be downloaded under: https://tla.mpi.nl/tools/tla-tools/elan/ A great amount of the materials from field research are stored and annotated with the annotation program ELAN. When you decide to continue using ELAN or to complete an already started ELAN project, please consider the preferred layer structure: If you can make a full translation of the transcribed content, the layer structure is as follows:

- P1 (1st Person performing: Surname Name) - English translation - P2… (2nd Person performing: Surname Name) - English translation - I1, I2, I3... (Interviewer: Surname Name) - English translation - Technical observations

If you cannot make a full translation of the transcribed content, describe the content:

- English summary - P1, P2, P3 etc. (Persons performing: Surname Name) - I1, I2, I3… (Interviewer: Surname Name) - Technical Observation

Name the ELAN files after the original file, e.g.

- 2010_09_23 (1) Pécs - Gyöngyi - Noi dân Indio a vinit.mov (original file) - 2010_09_23 (1) Pecs - Gyöngyi - Noi dân Indio a vinit.eaf (ELAN file)

In ELAN always use the font Times New Roman only. As the ELAN tool seems not to offer our preferred subtitle style yet, we suggest exporting annotations made in ELAN into srt-files (subtitles) and to import them to Adobe Premiere. More explanations for annotating with ELAN: www.mpi.nl/corpus/manuals/manual-elan.pdf

2.2. Annotating in Word

As there were/are compatibility problems between ELAN and programs like Adobe Premiere, for new projects just use:

for annotations: the file “Annotatio” (all material, including Mappa Campi)

for transcription: the word form VLACH transcription template

3. Creating TEXTS (T) for publication

3.1. Presentation of varieties

All published material on VLACH need a short introduction in native proofed English language concerning the presented variety, which should follow a common structure:

Page 4: VLACH Manual 3 · o distribution in region of origin and in the world o official status o history o varieties o phonology, grammar ... English ([rɛst] vs. [ɹɛst]), VLACH prefers

4

header o language: variety exonyms (esp. English), endonyms o language codes (esp. glottolog, others)

short definition o 2-3 sentences, e.g.: xxx is a xxx language / belongs to xxx family, is spoken in xxx, its

speakers are called xxx (exonyms) (endonyms). xxx derives from xxx.

short description (every topic might have some sentences, but SHORT) o distribution in region of origin and in the world o official status o history o varieties o phonology, grammar o situation (number of speakers, literacy, education, media, vitality, revival) o references o desiderata o basic scientific bibliography o internal links o external links

author(s) of intro text, year of publication

3.2. Transcriptions and subtitles

VLACH uses principles of the International Phonetical Alphabet (IPA) while respecting the dialectological traditions of several countries and their standard languages. This might provoke confusion for those familiar with IPA, but will help readers with reading experience in those varieties. By this, VLACH hopes to widen the circle of readers and to contribute to the knowledge and raise awareness regarding vanishing languages and varieties. The main differences between IPA and IPA-based VLACH are:

Just as the English IPA usually uses [r] instead of the phonetically correct [ɹ] when transcribing English ([rɛst] vs. [ɹɛst]), VLACH prefers to use symbols of the respective language where they are well known, e.g. widespread Slavic [ž] instead of [ʒ] when transcribing Slavic varieties, Romanian [ș] instead of [ʃ] when transcribing Romanian varieties.

For aesthetic reasons, VLACH uses capital letters for the beginning of proper names ([Tʰɔm] instead of [tʰɔm]) and sentences where this is possible and does not allow confusion with other symbols.

Where it is possible, VLACH prefers ligature [ʦ, ʣ, ʧ, ʤ, ʨ, ʥ] to tie bar [ts͡, d͡z, t͡ʃ, d͡ʒ, t͡ɕ, d͡ʑ]. Where technically not possible or unusual, it allows tie bar [t͡ɬ, k͡p, ɡ͡b, ŋ͡m, s͡f,].

Acute and gravis are used for primary [´] and secondary [`] accent instead of IPA [ˈ] and [ˌ], e.g. IPA: [ˈvasɐˌpfaɪf̯ə], VLACH: [vásɐpfàɪf̯ə].

For details concerning transcriptions in different varieties: https://www.oeaw.ac.at/vlach/activities/transcription-guidelines/.

For your transcription and translation, please use the form VLACH transcription template. For the names of the word files, use the same name as the source file(s).

4. Creating AUDIO (A) collections

Audio files can be completed by visual information (F) and transferred into mp4 files as a slide show.

In the case there is no optical material, Audio can be presented as Audio only, like in http://ct-

audiolink.gr/

Typical structure for presentation of A, F and V files:

Audio

Foto

Page 6: VLACH Manual 3 · o distribution in region of origin and in the world o official status o history o varieties o phonology, grammar ... English ([rɛst] vs. [ɹɛst]), VLACH prefers

Video

5. Creating FOTO (F) collections

In the case there is no visual material, Audio can be presented as Audio only, like in http://ct-audiolink.gr

The photographic material should be greatly reduced for legal and practical reasons before publication. They can be attached to the material individually, as a photo gallery or as a slideshow. In case it is combined with audio please save as a slideshow in mp4 format. Photos must be provided with a copyright icon containing short text concerning their content, photographer and year.

6. Creating VIDEO (V) clips

As one of the focal points of the VLACH is the video platform, the creation, editing and publication of the clips are described in detail here.

Before the videos are prepared for publication with Premiere, they should be cut and mastered. The following description is based on the Premiere Pro CC 2017 version.

Step 1: Preparation

Download the latest version of folder “Manuals and intros” from the VLACH Studio on www.austriaca.at:8000/vlach/mini-werkstatt on your computer. You can also ask a Member at VLACH to provide it for you. The folder contains all the necessary files. Find VLACH Muster in the folder.

When you open the Muster, if Premiere does not have access to the files, please click on the offline media under the new file path manually by right-clicking> Merge Media> Search. Premiere then connects and automatically links all other missing files in the appropriate folder.

Make a copy of this file and save it as a reference and every time you need a new project, you change the name of the copy to the project name.

8

Step 2: Import files

Click [Import> Import] to add video and other files to the project.

Step 3: Save and name

Please save the project again, so that the pattern file is not changed! To do this, go to the top left [File> Save as ...> NameXY].

The naming of the file should correspond to the ID number of the clip, which is composed as follows: eight-digit language code according to Glottolog use target name after (http://glottolog.org/) in Minuscule + two-digit country code according to ISO 3166 in majuscule + single-digit Media (V-Video, A-Audio, F-Photo), four-digit sequential number in the language, one-digit running letter of the same clip version, e.g. rram1234ALV0023a:

rram1234 AL V 0023 a Aromunisch, Rramaneshti-Dialekt

recorded in Albania Video 23. Clip in rram1234

1. Version

Step 4: Set cutting area

Drag and drop the video into the editing area and adjust it to the green marked intro and outro. The video file should be in video track one (V1). Pull the rows for the subtitles into video tracks V2 + V3 as needed. When you move the mouse pointer over the edges, a parenthesis symbol appears, with which you can draw the ligaments. General: - Ctrl + Z to undo the last step - Use + and - to zoom in and out in the section area. - The Magnet Tool makes it easy to seamlessly adjust the tracks - Left click on an empty space + Del clears the gap and lets the files slip on - Overlaid files disappear! Take care when dragging and dropping!

Page 9: VLACH Manual 3 · o distribution in region of origin and in the world o official status o history o varieties o phonology, grammar ... English ([rɛst] vs. [ɹɛst]), VLACH prefers

9

- Press "C" to turn your mouse pointer into a razor blade for cutting. Press "V" to get the old mouse pointer back.

Step 5: Adjust video

If the video is recorded in a resolution larger or smaller than 1080x1920, you can scale the video to the correct size. To do this, go to the "Effect settings" tab on the top left. You can now adjust the video under> Motion> Scale.

Step 6: Make subtitles

If you are using the latest version of Muster the subtitles are already place there as shown in the image:

Page 10: VLACH Manual 3 · o distribution in region of origin and in the world o official status o history o varieties o phonology, grammar ... English ([rɛst] vs. [ɹɛst]), VLACH prefers

10

Rules of thumb for subtitles: The editor decides after feeling how long a title has to stand. However, please do not start an audio track before hearing the first transcribed sound. In addition, the title should not break off before the last word is spoken. But he can still stand still after the last word, so it is not continued immediately. The title should have a certain minimum duration anyway in order to ensure legibility.

For more you can access a tutorial on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0_UO8fBPIg&t=708s

Step 7: Edit subtitles

New subtitles are added by the "+" symbol. The new title appends to the previous title.

A newly created title takes over the settings of its predecessor. A subsequent change of all titles is not

possible with one click! So first set all the settings as follows:

Letterbox: To remove the black bar of the letterbox, first click on the red boxed icon. Then set the % number next to the pen icon to 0% to maximize transparency. Font color: White for the lower subtitles, yellow for the upper subtitles. Tip: click in the intro to accept the color code or type in the code: FFB227.

Page 11: VLACH Manual 3 · o distribution in region of origin and in the world o official status o history o varieties o phonology, grammar ... English ([rɛst] vs. [ɹɛst]), VLACH prefers

11

The font size of the subtitles - original language is [60] and for the translation is [55]. These variables should not be changed. The text background should be black and set on 40% for both languages.

The position of the subtitles is indicated by the matrix marked here in blue. If you were to place the point in the middle of the example above, the title will be centered there as well. Lines that are too long are automatically left justified by Premiere. To understand when a line is too long, you can activate "Safe areas" (wrench icon in the program window). If a line goes beyond the inner line, it is too long. Divide lines that are too long into two shorter subtitles.

Page 12: VLACH Manual 3 · o distribution in region of origin and in the world o official status o history o varieties o phonology, grammar ... English ([rɛst] vs. [ɹɛst]), VLACH prefers

12

Step 8: Intro and Outro

To edit the name and descriptions in the header, double-click the title file "IntroTEXT".

The title text field will open in the middle of the screen. You can now edit the text. Do the same with the credits. Double-click "OutroTEXT" etc.

- First write the new text behind the sample text! Then delete the sample text. Otherwise, the font size or color can change!

- To avoid confusion, click on the text layer with the timeline cursor as in the example image. The text always appears on the background where the cursor is, not where the title is.

If you use ELAN templates to create the subtitles, you should export the subtitles from the ELAN as srt files and try to import them into Adobe Premiere. Unfortunately, in our experience, errors occur, so please be sure to check the run-capability of the srt files.

If you create and use subtitle in Word templates (for example, VLACH Transcription), you will need to manually transfer each subtitle from the transcription tables and check afterwards.

Page 13: VLACH Manual 3 · o distribution in region of origin and in the world o official status o history o varieties o phonology, grammar ... English ([rɛst] vs. [ɹɛst]), VLACH prefers

13

Step 9: Other

The "Auto Color" and "Auto Contrast" effects create an automatic, usually convincing color correction. The "Fast Color" Correction effect lets you make the correction manually. If further processing is needed, the user can utilise the cutter

The sound display can be found to the right of the editing area. Good sound levels usually peak between -12 and -6 decibels and never go into the red area. You can also vary the volume under "Effect settings".

Step 10: Export

Before exporting, the workspace must be marked. Make sure that the "Workspace Bar" is enabled in the Timeline panel.

Then set the working area to the entire length!

Page 14: VLACH Manual 3 · o distribution in region of origin and in the world o official status o history o varieties o phonology, grammar ... English ([rɛst] vs. [ɹɛst]), VLACH prefers

14

Everything within the workspace is exported. Outside it, nothing is exported!

If the workspace is highlighted correctly, press Ctrl + M to open the export settings. Select the settings as shown here:

Page 15: VLACH Manual 3 · o distribution in region of origin and in the world o official status o history o varieties o phonology, grammar ... English ([rɛst] vs. [ɹɛst]), VLACH prefers

15

To find the correct output settings, click "Match with source". As soon as you change the settings individually, the default changes to "Custom". By the end, the settings should be as shown here.

With "exporting“, you request the video out immediately. The Queue field places the export job in Adobe Media Encoder CC. You can collect multiple projects in the Media Encoder. You start the queue through the green arrow / triangle in the top right corner. Since exporting the videos takes a lot of time and computing power, it is advisable to use the Media Encoder and to accumulate a certain amount of video projects, then leaving the PC to perform the encoding. We strongly advise against users with PCs with less than 16 GB of RAM from using the PC during exporting.

7. Publishing of material

Please load the finished materials according to TAFV in an orderly and hierarchical manner on the page http://www.austriaca.at:8000/vlach/mini-werkstatt in the designated folders of the respective language varieties and topics. For this, you need your username and password at the ÖAW. Regarding the structure of the AFV data to be published, please consider the following order summary.
