English Also The New Boogie ManSome 40-100 thousand Puerto Ricans (depend-

ing on your choice of newspapers) marched on hecapitol last Sunday to protest a new hill to makeEnglish practically interchangeable with Spanishin any official government business.

Tbeireasons are many, but foremost.amongthem are two:1.) The new law is a plot by the recently empow-ered PNP majority to dupe the U.S. Congress intobelieving Puerto Rico is ready for Statehood.2.) The offieialization of English constitutes anassault against their cultural heritage.

Either way, the issue has created a major flap inSan Juan and locally a school teacher cotmneated,/’*That means. The Vieques Times won’t be bi-lingual any more."

The AIDS epidemic has had a great many conseqoenceg, few ofthem positive, But one favorable result has been the.increased use of a transfusion procedure by which personsfacing electiv surge/can donate their own blood to them-selves before that surgery. In Memory of Apolonia Gittings Alboot voices of retired teachers as we s,ng the Teachers Associa-

by Nana Ortiz de Castailo

Unforgettable pillar of the vast field of education, we!l-loved by the teaching class, her students, the Vieques com-munity at large, and by us who shared the pleasure of hercompany, Apolonia Gittings Albootwas a descendant ofoneof those families who immigrated here in the late 19th andearly 20th centuries. Her parents, Charles E, Gittings andGeorgine Alboot, arrived on our shores from the island ofNevis to ingress in our working class. He was a laborer, she,apasta-y makerlike so manyofthe madameswhocame totakerots here, o live and share with their people and finally to

rest in the Vieques cemetery. This couple produced two children here: Apoionia and

Caroline Gittings Alboot. Apolonia was an eternal scholar. She finished local grammar school at a time when there wasno high in Vieques. So Madame Georgine had to double herlabours and sell twice as many sweets to send Apolonia toPuerto Rico to continue her studies.

She,graduated from Continuing School and got her Uni-versity of Puerto Rico certificate as a lifetime teacher. Thiskind of degree was only good for teaching in rural zones.Young Apoionia started teaching in Barrio Peri in Luj1n.

Later she worked in Martfnez and in LaHueca. There she methandsome young Asisclo Marffnez and both felt the bite ofCupid’s arrow. After the courtship period they were married.Their only child ws Carlos Moises (R.I.P.). She also taughtin La Palma and Lter in Puerto Real. There was no rapidtransit in those days, so this teacher ofteachers, like so manyothers,, had to cover long distances on horseback like anarazon to deliverthe breadofinstruction to the studentflock, and at month’s end, receive a meager stipend. What a life ofsacrifice it was for a teacher to fulfill the vows of such abeautiful priesthood!

When the high school opened, Apoionia went to nightschool, tired from her exhausting everyday struggle. This

persevering spirit finally graduated as a senior in 1932. Shecontinued to teach in the rural zones but studied summers to

get her diploma from Normal School. Then she enrolled in

English courses qualify for urban schools. She retired as anEnglish teacher from Eugenio Maria de Hostos School in thecenter of town after many years of dedicated service.

Miss Gittings, as she was called by her students (andeveryone else) was presented in the temple at birth, according to the biblical tradition of her time.

Perhaps because of this early Christian training by her

parents, she dedicated the rest of her entire life to the serviceof the Methodist Church. Even as an almost blind oldwoman, we saw her dragging her sick and tired, ancienthumanity down from Mambiche to attend church functions.Oddly enough, although Methodism didn’t attend CatholicChurch funerals, Apolonia was invariably present both at

that church and at the homes of those dearly departed.Miss Gittings was also a member of long standing at the

Vieques Ladies Civic Society.Worn down by the weight of years, Apolonia abandoned

this vale of tears to rest at last in the peace ofher Lord in Hiscelestial mansion. From heaven Apolonia could hear the

tion hymn. She loved that hymn and sang it often at magis-terial activities. Shewas also fond ofthe CivicLadies hymn. The honor guard and the words filled with sweet memoriesspoken by her corurades-at-arms Bonano Casillas and DollaMafia D. Benftez viuda de Castallo were deeply felt by thecongregation at the Methodist Church where she lay inburning chapel.

Life has profound mysteries. That night as I spoke withher only grandson, he told me these words; "Just 24 monthsago, on a day like today, Chrismms eve, my father died andwas buried on Christmas Day,just as she will be." Ironies otlife!

I am sure Apolonia is happy and rested in the place sheoccupies in the heavenly vault. ThisChristmas, togetherwithher son, she will join the choir of archangels and saraphims, singing carols to the Christ child, the long awaited Messiah.

Rest in peace, Apolonia Gittings Alboot.

Thecentral theme in Vtuques politics is rite presence of theUnitnd States Navy. This is so because that presence has asliving on one- third of this small island, which we share withthose non-Puerto Rican Amerims who wish to live here, which is theirright. Another eonse4uence ofthat presence is

that the island has to serve as a target for any bombing andshelling dtat the Navy, and its inite.O guests from foreigncouatrles, wish to carry on.

This situation has caused a datdcs-old protest movementattempting to dislodge the Navy.
