O Write an integer to represent the following

situation. The top of the world’s lowest

known active volcano is 160 ft below sea

level.

Section 1-2: Integers and Absolute Values

Charles, R. (2013). Prentice Hall mathematics, course 3: Common core

(2013 ed.). Boston, Mass.: Pearson Prentice Hall.

I am learning to…

O Find absolute values of integers and to use

absolute value to compare integers.

Real-World

O Temperatures can be below freezing! You

must know an integer to understand it is

below zero!

Vocabulary Section 1-2

O Opposites: numbers that are the same

distance from zero on a number line but in

opposite directions.

O Integers: are the set of whole numbers and

their opposites. … -2, -1, 0 , 1, 2…

O −8 =

O 2

O - 3

Example 2: Comparing and Ordering Integers

O Order -5, 7, 3, and -1 from least to greatest.

Example 3: Absolute Value in Algebraic Expressions

O 𝑥 + 𝑦 for x = -3 and y = 5

O 4𝑥 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑥 = −4

O 3 𝑠 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑠 = −5
