AMRI GALLI-CAMPI [s]. Honesdale, PA, 1899 – New York City, 1997. Born Irmendgard Gallenkamp, her professional name was likely constructed to be reminiscent of Amelita Galli-Curci, who had, for all practical purposes, retired as Galli-Campi’s career ascended. She appeared once with the Metropolitan Opera in 1938 on tour in Cleveland as Gilda in Rigoletto, following “considerable experience in Europe”, and was reported to have been given a four-minute ovation after “Caro nome”. Her failure to have received subsequent engagements by the Met could possibly have been a result of pressure from the Met’s reigning coloratura at the time, Lily Pons. As a composer, Galli-Campi’s opera Air Castles, completed in 1935, was presented at the opening of the New York World’s Fair in 1940. During the 1930s and ‘40s she was often heard on the radio and toured as a concert singer as well. Later she taught, one of her pupils having been actor/singer Joel Grey. She never recorded commercially. -Some details above from Victoria Etnier-Villamel’s book, “From Johnson’s Kids to Lemonade Opera”.

EDOARDO GARBIN [t]. Padua, 1865 – Brescia, 1943. His debut was in 1891 as Don Alvaro in Verdi’s La Forza del Destino, also singing that season Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana, the opera then being scarcely a year old. He went on to create the leading tenor role in Franchetti’s Cristoforo Colombo (1892), Fenton in the La Scala world premiere of Verdi’s Falstaff (1897) and Milio Dufresne in the original production of Leoncavallo’s Zazà, 1900, at the Milan Teatro Lirico. In 1908, he appeared in three operas at London’s Covent Garden, including Puccini’s Tosca, the London Times considering his work in this piece “miserable”. However he remained popular in Italy and South America, where his voice and style were apparently more appreciated. He retired in 1918.

DUSOLINA GIANNINI [s]. During the later 1920s, Giannini had great success in concert and opera in Germany, England, Italy and Australia. Shortly before her first German concert tour, she and her chaperone, Mother Giannini, were awakened by a pistol packing burglar. She advised the burglar that they had no money (all the talk being in German) and pleaded, “Have you no mother? Have you no sister?” He was young and apparently overcome by a wave of sentimentality (and also seeing that the pickings were slim), left via the window that was the scene of his original entrance. He was caught the next day. This episode introduced her to the German press, but it was soon replaced by her successful concert and opera reviews.

A New York Concert made a great impression, and he was offered a prestigious position of chief cantor of the Ohev Shalom Synagogue in New York. He appeared in international concert tours and resettled in Los Angeles in 1941 and 1953 in Tel Aviv. His death occurred during a concert there. JULES GODART [t]. Quaregnon, Belgium, 1877-Vésinet, France, 1909. He studied at the Mons and Brussels Conservatories, receiving a First Prize from the latter “with great distinction”. Gaining experience in Rouen, Marseille and Geneva, he made his Paris Opéra debut as Lohengrin in 1908. Subsequent roles included Samson, Siegfried, Siegmund and Gounod’s Faust. He also had been engaged in 1909 for the Manhattan Opera. Mr. Godart and his wife were invited to visit friends, Mr. and Mrs. Doudieux in Vésinet, for dinner and an air show. After the meal, Godart became ill and died sixteen hours later, at age thirty-two. This was a result of accidental poisoning, the intended victim being Mr. Doudieux by a spurned former girlfriend, Marie Bourette, who was imprisoned for life.

IGOR GORIN [b]. Grodek, Austria, 1904 – Tucson, AZ, 1982. Born Ignatz Greenberg, son of a rabbi. Gorin studied in a Talmudist school where he mastered Hebrew and eventually was able to speak eight languages fluently as well. He moved to Vienna at the age of 15 and was heard by the noted voice teacher Viktor Fuchs, who offered him free lessons via one of his teaching assistants. From 1926-29 Gorin studied at the Vienna Music Academy. His idol was Battistini, and he worked in particular to emulate that singer’s bel canto style. In 1930 he became a member of the Vienna Volksoper, singing a number of standard roles. His first visit to the U.S. was a period from late 1930 into 1931, where he officiated as a cantor in a temple in Providence, RI. Returning to Austria and seeing the anti-semitic problems of the time, he emigrated to the U.S. in 1933 permanently and became a naturalized U.S. citizen in 1939. His voice proved ideal for recording and radio work, and he became much in demand for the various musical radio shows of the period. His operatic appearances included the Chicago Lyric Opera (1962), the NYC Opera (1963), and the Metropolitan Opera (one guest performance in 1964 as Giorgio Germont). He retired in 1966 to Arizona because of declining health, where he became a Professor of Music at the University of Arizona in Tucson. He also made LP recordings for Golden Crest Records in Huntington Station, NY, following his stage retirement. Sometime in the 1970s, when I happened to be visiting the Golden Crest studios, the head of the company (I believe his name was Mr. Galehouse) proudly advised that Igor Gorin had been there only shortly before to record, and had I been a couple of days earlier I could have met him.

Her professional debut was in 1913 with the Kiev Opera. She was subsequently heard at the Mariinsky Theater, as well as Berlin, Copenhagen, Helsinki and at the Bolshoi in lyric-coloratura roles such as Gilda, Rosina, Juliette, Lakmé and Violetta. –Forgotten Opera Singers (internet) and notes (included with record) by Aïda Artsay.

CHARLES HACKETT [t]. Worcester, MA, 1887 – New York City, 1942. Hackett was the most prominent of three vocal brothers, the others George and Arthur. George was primarily a teacher (although he did have success in church, concert and operetta work) and studied with Arthur J. Hubbard in Boston, who also taught Charles (on the re- commendation of Lillian Nordica) and Arthur. George never recorded, to my knowledge, and Arthur made only one disc, that for English Columbia in 1926. Charles appeared at Covent Garden (co-starring with Melba, among others) and was particularly associated with his work at the Met and with the Chicago Opera as well as in concert. HERMANN JADLOWKER [t]. Riga, Latvia, 1877-Tel Aviv, 1953. In order to escape from a commercial career into which his father tried to force him, Jadlowker ran away from home as a lad of 15. He journeyed to Vienna, where he studied singing with Josef Gänsbacher. In 1899 (some sources say 1897), he made his operatic début at Cologne in Kreutzer’s Nachtlager von Granada. He then secured engagements in Stettin and then at Karlsruhe. Here the German Emperor William (Kaiser Wilhelm II) heard him and was so impressed that he offered the tenor a five-year contract at the Royal Opera in Berlin. Apart from Berlin, Jadlowker sang also in Stuttgart, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Vienna, Lemberg, Prague, Budapest and Boston during the course of his career. In 1910 and 1912, Jadlowker appeared at the New York Metropolitan Opera House, where he proved to be one of the company's most versatile artists, sharing the tenor repertoire with Caruso, Slezak and Smirnov, among others. He returned to Europe prior to the outbreak of World War I and continued his operatic career in a number of German cities. During the 1920s, Jadlowker sang increasingly on the concert platform and, in 1929, he was chosen to be chief cantor at the Riga Synagogue. Jadlowker subsequently became a voice teacher at the Riga Conservatory before emigrating to Palestine with his wife in 1938. He taught in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. He was particularly noted for his remarkable technical and coloratura skills. – Wikipedia.

MARCEL JOURNET [bs]. See also: CHARLES DALMORÈS [t], FRANCISCO NUIBO

[t], ELLISON VAN HOOSE [t]. Grasse, 1868-Vittel, 1933. A leading French bass of the first third of the 20th century, Journet

was active at the Paris Opéra through the season of 1933 and at the Met early on in the century. Journet recalled, in a 1928 Musical America interview, that his colleague there, Plançon, died “from too much good living”, including “rich foods and heavy wine” as well as tobacco. Journet felt that Plançon and Caruso “smoked enough to ruin the throats of ten ordinary singers!” Journet also advised that he never chose to leave the Met. “But at the time I was there, there were two eminent bass-baritones before me – Plançon and Edouard de Reszke – and the composers didn’t make enough first bass part to go ‘round for all. So when a tempting offer came from Paris, where after all I’m at home, I thought it wise to leave. We had good times together, though. Indeed, if they hadn’t been quite so good poor Plançon might be alive today.”

EMMA JUCH [s]. Vienna, 1863 – New York, 1939. Daughter of naturalized American parents living in Detroit who were visiting their native Austria, the family resettling in New York upon their return. Her operatic debut, “entirely without stage training” was in London as Philine in Mignon with the Mapleson Company in 1881. She made her U.S. debut later that year in the same role with the same company, her co-stars having been tenor Italo Campanini and baritone Giuseppe del Puente, whose careers predated commercial recording. She became a noted operatic celebrity, both for her success in a remarkable varied repertoire and her “unusual beauty and charm”. “She was also a talented actress in a day when operatic singers were not necessarily able to act at all.” Juch’s repertoire included Aida, the Queen of the Night, Senta, Gilda, Leonora (in Il Trovatore) … in fact just about any role that attracted her. She appears to have success in all of her roles. Her final appearance was in 1894. That year she wed Francis L. Wellmann, the U.S. District Attorney in New York. He objected to her having a career, so at the age of 31 she retired. Apparently the occasional society musicales were permitted, as well as her three recordings made in 1904. The couple divorced in 1911, but a “serious illness affected her voice to such an extent that she gave up singing entirely. In her later years she did not even have a piano in her home. ‘All that is just like a dream,’ she said in speaking of her career, ‘and it seems to me like something that must have happened to someone else!’ ” – Quotes from Musical America article on Juch upon her death by John Alan Haughton

She studied at the St. Petersburg Conservatory and was particularly helped by composer Alexander Glazounov, head of the Conservatory at the time. She also married one Georgii Alexandrovich von Bremer. In 1919 she began a career at the Mariinsky Theater and even appeared there with Chaliapin. She left Russia in 1921 and in 1922 made her debut at the Berlin Staatsoper in Le Coq d’Or (Rimsky-Korsakov). A year later she toured Germany, appearing in various opera houses, as well as in Prague, Brussels, Paris and Rotterdam. Returning to Berlin in 1924, she created for Germany, with much success, the title role in Janáček's Jenůfa. International acclaim seemed on the horizon, but in a fit of depression (attributed to an unrequited romantic situation) she registered in a Swiss hotel under an alias, took poison and jumped into a glacial river. – Ivan Matkovsky (Internet), Russian Celebrities.

She was first heard at the Monte Carlo Opera in 1947, where she began singing Wagner roles such as Kundry, the two Brunhildes and Ortrud. Her success was such that she was invited to sing at the Berlin Staatsoper in Tristan und Isolde, opposite Max Lorenz, in 1951. Just as an international career was in the making, Suzanne Juyol retired from the stage in 1960.

GRACE KERNS [s]. Berkeley (or Norfolk), VA, 1890?-Williamsburg, VA, 1936. She studied mainly in America excepting “for a season” with Carlo Sebastiani in Naples. Establishing herself in New York City, she became a soloist at St. Bartholomew’s Church and then the First Presbyterian Church. As with fellow church singer sopranos Lucy Marsh and Olive Kline, Kerns first became generally known via her recordings, hers beginning with Columbia in 1912. During W.W. I she was in one of the YMCA entertainment units singing in various camps and hospitals and was dubbed the “Nightingale of the Trenches”. Returning to New York after the War, she continued her church career, adding to it oratorio solo work, performances with various orchestras (including a tour with the New York Symphony under Walter Damrosch) and concerts. Her New York recital debut, accompanied by Richard Hageman, was in Aeolian Hall in 1921, where a critic for Musical America noted that she used her “lyric voice of considerable beauty with intelligence and unfailing good taste”. She seems never to have appeared in opera. After retirement from performing, she first taught in New York City and then at Randolph-Macon Women’s College in Virginia. She, her brother and nephew were killed when a car in which she was riding en route to visit her sister collided head on with a bus.

A pupil of Iso Barna in Budapest, he began as a bass-baritone operatic chorister in 1896, working his way up to baritone roles at the the Temesvar Opera House, 1900-1903. Further study led to heroic tenor roles first at the Budapest People’s Opera in 1907 where he debuted as Don José in Carmen. The next year he appeared with the Budapest National Opera and was associated with them until his death. In addition to various guest appearances, he was notably with the ensemble of the Vienna Court Opera, 1915-18, where he created Bacchus in Ariadne auf Naxos (Strauss). His wife, soprano Elsa Szamosi (the first U.S. Madama Butterfly), died a few months before her husband, whose passing was attributed to blood poisoning.

Included in his repertoire were leading roles in Les Huguenots, Aida, Samson et Dalila, William Tell, Parsifal and many others. Engaged by the Brussels Théâtre de la Monnaie in 1904, he was a leading tenor there until leaving in 1910, likewise appearing in a varied repertoire including Faust, Carmen and Roméo et Juliette, as well as creating a number of roles for both companies. His career included North and South America (at the Boston Opera in the U.S. and the Teatro Colón) as well as guest stops in Russia and at Covent Garden, and a number of other European locations. He returned to the Paris Opéra in 1923, again singing Saint-Saëns’ Samson as well as Faust in the Berlioz Damnation de Faust. He retired from the stage in 1925. Despite his remarkable success, Lafitte recorded only between 1901 and 1903 in Paris (for G&T, Columbia and Zonophone).

He was active into the later 1930s but primarily as a choral director in the New York area. ENZO LELIVA [t]. Varsovie , Poland, 1879 – Warsaw, 1929. Leliva, at the time of his active career, was “said to be one of the most cultured men in his profession”. He did so for a year and a half with de Reszke in Paris. The Italian publisher Sozogno heard him and supposedly provided him opportunities in Italy, where he appeared in various major houses including La Scala. He also sang at Covent Garden and in South America, as well as with the Boston and Chicago Operas and the Berlin Royal Opera.

EVA LEONI [s]. Berlin, 1895-New York City, 1972. The source providing this birth informa-tion (Internet: Forgotten Opera Singers hosted by Ashot Arakelyan) mentions that her parents were Hungarian. A 1921 Musical America performance review states that she was born in Vienna of Italian and French parents. She seems to have had success in Italy and South America singing mainly coloratura and lyric roles and arriving in the U.S. during the First World War. She had success here, appearing in everything musically from operetta to the American premiere (1923) of Arnold Schönbergs Herzgewächse. One reviewer, in 1921, stated that “a brilliant future should await her, as she is unmistakenly superior to a good many now in the public eye as well as the public ear.” She later taught and arranged operatic performances for children in New York City (also possibly San Francisco), one of her youthful musical charges in New York having been the future film star Ann Blyth.

LOUISE LERCH (BRIEN) [s]. Allentown, PA, 1896-Ardmore, PA, 1967. A student of Percy D. Aldrich in Philadelphia and Marcella Sembrich, Lerch made her Metropolitan Opera debut in 1926 in a Sunday night concert. That evening she sang “Depuis le jour” from Charpentier’s Louise and “Der Hölle Rache” from The Magic Flute. The New York Times reviewer made the point that Lerch sang the Mozart aria in the original key with the high Fs, mentioning that just the day before in a performance of The Magic Flute at the Metropolitan, the soprano (an uncited Marion Talley) had transposed the aria down. Lerch remained on the Met roster until her marriage to Donald G. Brien, a Pittsburgh merchant, in 1932. Her New York repertoire included Lucia and Gilda but she was more frequently heard in shorter parts such as Kate Pinkerton and Ortlinde in Die Walküre. In addition to her operatic activity, Lerch was active in appearances with major choral groups and orchestras in works such as Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and the Bach B Minor Mass. She was heard multiple times as soloist at the Bethlehem, PA, Bach Festival, it having been one of her last (1938) major public performance venues as well. While Louise Lerch never recorded commercially, some privately issued Victor discs from the mid-1930s exist, likely made as souvenirs for family and friends.

MERCEDES LLOPART [s]. Barcelona, 1895 – Milan, 1970. Llopart was a Span-ish soprano who later became a notable singing teacher in Italy. She studied in her native Barcelona and made her operatic debut there apparently while in her mid-teens. She then went to Italy, appearing there in 1912 at the Sociale di San Giovanni as Gilda in Rigoletto. She subsequently appeared in many small theatres before making her debut at the Rome Opera in 1920 where she remained until 1925. She then was featured at the Verona Arena in 1922 as Elsa in Lohengrin, in Palermo in 1923 as Tosca, and in Genoa, 1925, as Ginevra in La Cena delle Beffe. In 1924, at the invitation of Arturo Toscanini, she made her debut at Milan’s La Scala, as Sieglinde in Walkure, and went on singing there as Alice Ford in Falstaff, the Marschallin in Der Rosenkavalier, the Countess in Le Nozze di Figaro, and created the role of Dolly in the world premiere of Wolf-Ferrari's opera Sly in 1927, with tenor Aureliano Pertile. She also appeared at the Royal Opera House in London as Alice Ford in 1926, and as Tosca at the Monte Carlo Opera in 1929. She retired from the stage in 1945 and became a noted singing teacher in Milan, her most famous students including: Renata Scotto, Fiorenza Cossotto, Anna Moffo, Elena Souliotis, Biancamaria Casoni, Venezuelan tenor Rubén Dominguez, Bernabé Martí, Alfredo Kraus, and bass Ivo Vinco.
