You may sing the scale on a lower or higher pitch, if it is more suitable for your voice type. Sing on different pitches, if you can. • sopranos start at b♭, c’, c♯ ’, d’ • mezzo-sopranos start at a, a♯ , b, c’ • altos start at f, f♯ , g, g♯ • tenors start at A, A♯ , B, c • baritones start at F, F♯ , G, G♯ , A • basses start at E, D♯ , D, C♯ , C

Stay within your limits. For the male singers in particular: try to mix registers if you can.

Sing slow (mm 50) on [a] in one breath, start forte, and make a long decrescendo on the third note and proceed in piano. Sing at four different pitches, for instance :

• sopranos and mezzo-sopranos start at c’, e’, g’ and c’’ • altos start at a, c♯ ’, e’, a’ • tenors start at c, e, g, c’ • baritones start at A, c♯ , e, a • basses start at G, B, d, g

Sing legato and slow (mm 50) on [i] - [e] - [è] - [e] - [i] (as in keen, date, bet) and [u]- [o]- [ò] - [o]- [u] (as in mood, note, soft). Please start at different pitches too, preferably in a range of an octave. For instance :

• sopranos start at g’, b’, d’’ and g’’ • mezzo-sopranos start at f’, a’, c’’, f’’ • altos start at d’, f♯ ’, a’, d’’ • tenors start at g, b, d’, g’ • baritones start at f, a, c’, f’• basses start at d, f♯ , a, d’

This vocalise is specially for the mezzo-sopranos / altos and baritones/basses to demonstrate the lower parts of their voices. Adapt the pitch to your voice type and start at preferably 3 or 4 different pitches. Sing it on [a] (as in father) and take a breath after the second bar. Gentlemen

could start for example on c, B♭, A and G. For the ladies this would be c ‘, b♭, a and g. Maybe you could even reach to a low A (for the altos) / A, (for the basses)?
