• Began internal evaluation of CDMA after determining that the
proposed US TDMA standard would not meet its requirements
• First cellular carrier to conduct field trials of CDMA in a mobile
environment (1989)– trials conducted in San Diego, initially only with AirTouch and
Qualcomm
– trial system latter opened up to the cellular industry at large
• Played major roles in the CTIA and the TIA during development of
cdmaOne standards– currently very active in G3G CDMA standards development activities
• Deployed first US major market commercial cdmaOne service in
Los Angeles in May 1996

• Founded the CDMA Development Group (CDG)
• Implemented cdmaOne service in all AirTouch Cellular markets
• Evaluated other digital technologies for its PCS partnership
business in the US but decided in favour of cdmaOne– conducted extensive technology trials in San Francisco Bay Area
• Evaluated IS-136 TDMA for its Kansas City joint venture operation
but again decided to deploy cdmaOne

Product Overview
• Mobile Web lets customers access specially formatted Internet content through their cdmaOne cellular phones
• The content is displayed by a Phone.com minibrowser stored in the phone– The minibrowser experience is familiar to users of desktop browsers, as
many functions are similar
• All customers with a minibrowser phone can access the service– Users don’t have to sign-up for service
• All new mid- and high-tier phones being ordered by AirTouch will have a minibrowser
• Mobile Web is bundled with the SMS service offering– As part of the service, users can have information pushed to them
– Push information is delivered via SMS

• Mobile Web content and services currently offered include:– E-mail, messaging, calendar, address book
– Personalized information (e.g. news, weather, sports scores, stock quotes)
– Directory services
– AirTouch e-care (electronic customer care)
• Content is accessible through both wireless phones and desktop computers
• Information services can be personalized from either the phone or a desktop computer
• All content and services are delivered to the phone from a network server– Service can continually evolve as new content and services become available
– All new content is immediately available to all Mobile Web users
• All Mobile Web handsets use intelligent text entry technologies for ease of composing messages and e-mails

– Consistent look and feel with “airtouch.com” web site
• Most of the AirTouch branded content and services currently provided through a partnership with InfoSpace– Additional content and services will also be available through a co-branded
service with Microsoft (MSN Mobile)
• Three types of pages (called “cards”) can be sent to the phone and displayed on the screen:– Display Card
• Displays text: Content author controls how large amounts of content are broken down into separate cards (e.g. using a “More” key at end of each card, etc)
– Choice Card• Navigational links / menu options the user can select from (e.g. messages in an e-
mail box, names in an address book, etc)
– Enter Card• For the user to enter information (text, numeric, alphanumeric)
