immigrants

The Vodafone Malta Foundation joined forces with the “GetupStandup” organisation to help

improve the conditions of immigrants in Malta by collecting winter clothing for men, women

and children living in detention centres in these cold winter nights.

“Christmas is a time for giving,” said Roberta Pace, Administrator at the Vodafone Malta

Foundation. “Vodafone employees and their family and friends all pitched in and donated

clothes for this good cause, providing warmth and cheer to the people who are not as blessed

as we all are.” Volunteers from the “GetupStandup” NGO collected over 25 bags full of warm

winter clothes from Vodafone House.

Lewis Hamilton brings the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes

to Malta

Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton wowed the crowds with stunts with the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes F1 at this

year’s Paqpaqli ghall-Istrina event.

Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton showed his prowess for the first time in Malta in the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes F1 car at this year’s Paqpaqli ghall-Istrina event in aid of the Community Chest Fund a few days ago.

“We are delighted with the success of Lewis Hamilton’s visit at the Vodafone L-Istrina event,” said Vodafone Malta chief executive Balesh Sharma. “This must have been one of the best motoring events Malta ever saw.”

Lewis Hamilton’s sensational arrival by helicopter set the pace for the event which attracted thousands of fans and enthusiasts. Lewis Hamilton was accompanied by Mr Sharma to present President George Abela with the Vodafone Foundation’s donation of €30,000 to the Community Chest Fund.

He then displayed his world champion skills, first in the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-26 and later in the Mercedes Cabrio E-Class 250 CDI, where he took President Abela and lucky winners in a breathtaking lap around the circuit.

Vodafone’s VIP guests were also able to meet Lewis Hamilton at the Vodafone ‘Raise Your Game’ event where guests bid for a lap in the Mercedes sports car driven by the 2008 world champion.

Instead of giving the usual Christmas gifts, this year Vodafone wanted to share its success and decided to help l-Istrina and made a donation with the hope of continuing to help people in need and offer them a better future.

Melita supporting YMCA Homeless

Melita is supporting YMCA Homeless this Christmas through services, funds and food donations.

Along with giving free Internet and Television services at the various shelters managed by the NGO, Melita is also assisting in the collection of food from its outlets across Malta and Gozo. Melita has set-up dedicated collection boxes at each of its outlets for anyone who wishes to donate preserved foods (like canned fruit and vegetables, corned beef or baby food) to YMCA Homeless.

Moreover Melita will also match financial donations made by the public to YMCA Homeless via SMS up to a value of EUR 10,000. To make a monetary donation, simply send an SMS to 50618088 to donate €4.66 or 50619212 to donate €11.65.

The initiative is aimed at helping people like Jane live a better life. Jane a forty seven year old woman with two children aged twelve and six, was a victim of Domestic Violence who was thrown out of her home in the early hours of the morning. She had been suffering the abuse for most of her marriage until this incident changed her life. Suddenly with nowhere to go, she headed to the local police station, where she was referred to YMCA Homeless. Jane and her two children lived at the YMCA Homeless Shelter, Dar Niki Cassar for over a year, during which time she initiated separation procedure and through the help of professionals started working towards independence. She was finally awarded an alternative accommodation where she is now living with her two children.

This is just one of many untold and unheard stories of people who have to rely on help by YMCA Homeless.

BOV issues its 6th CSR report

The sixth edition of Bank of Valletta’s Corporate Social Responsibility report has been published. This report documents the Bank’s actions and efforts throughout the financial year ending September 2012.

In his first message for the CSR report as the BOV Group’s recently-appointed Chairman, Frederick Mifsud Bonnici explained the importance of transparency, integrity and truth as values which govern this aspect and comparing these values with his own personal principles.

Charles Borg, BOV’s CEO, emphasised that the Bank’s “mission statement stresses our commitment towards sustainable development and demands that we act as responsible and caring citizens”. He added that “adopting a good approach where what is good for society is also seen as being good for the company and the brand. In a 24/7 world, customers are increasingly aware of the power they can leverage over a company’s operations”.

This year’s CSR document reports a notable success in the Bank’s efforts in the greener section. Following the Bank’s appointment of an Environmental Manager in 2011, BOV has reached a number of environmentally-caring objectives including the following:

· BOV Centre has halved its façade lighting saving around 11,000kg worth of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year.

· The removal of 700 light fittings within BOV Centre has resulted in a total yearly savings of 45,549kg of CO2.

· 261 photovoltaic panels were installed around 16 BOV branches during the past financial year with a reduction of circa 105,000kg of CO2. 14,500 trees would be required to absorb this amount of CO2.

· The Bank has appointed 60 Green Leaders who will act as ambassadors to promote an environmentally-friendly culture, complementing the Bank’s ongoing green initiatives.

With one of the largest community programmes on the island, the Bank has a responsibility towards the community it operates in. The way forward is challenging yet inspiring, with a commitment towards all stakeholders.

Planting more trees

Bank of Valletta planted 110 trees at Majjistral Park representing a tree for every million in its record profit of €110.7 million for the financial year ended September 2012.

“The Bank wanted to create a visual representation of this impressive amount, which is 72% above the €64.4 million figure reported FY2011. We like the symbolism of planting something that will be there for years to come, as after all this is what our profits represent.

“Those trees represent the families we helped with home loans, the businesses that we helped to grow, the entrepreneurs that we believed in... Bank of Valletta is an important factor in the Maltese economy because of the credit that we make available, the opportunities that we give to those who wish to save or invest, the dividends that we give our shareholders, the millions in tax that we pay the government and the 1,600 households that we sustain through our employees,” Chief Executive Officer Charles Borg.

“We hope that this tree-planting can become an annual event, linking our performance to the creation of a lasting afforestation project.” said Kenneth Micallef, Head of the CEO’s Office who led the BOV Green Leaders Group in the tree planting event. He continued by explaining a number of green initiatives undertaken recently by the Bank with the aim of reducing its own carbon footprint, as well as supporting Nature Trust, which is one of the NGOs involved with the Majjistral Park.

Spearheaded by HSBC employee Samantha Hollyoak with support of the HSBC Malta Contact Centre in Qormi and the HSBC Malta Foundation, this initiative has in the past generated funds to a variety of philanthropic institutions including S.T.A.R.S, Inspire, the Rainbow Ward, and three homes that provide care for children in need. This year all proceeds are to be presented to l-Istrina. Over the past five years, close to 7,000 poinsettas have been sold.

“Charitable work has always been very close to my heart and this initiative gave me the opportunity to reach out others. Voluntarism gives me a lot of satisfaction in the knowledge that we can all make a difference and help those who are in need,” said Samantha.

HSBC Malta actively encourages its employees to volunteer for the initiatives they are most passionate about.

“This initiative has been supported by my colleagues at HSBC. The majority of orders come from them and they also promote this idea among their families and friends outside HSBC. Thanks also go out to those other companies that have lent their support and bought poinsettas for their offices,” she said.
