Jesus is the Light of the World!

The Epiphany of Jesus - Hebrews 1:1-9. One of my favorite celebrations is Epiphany (January 6 – celebrating on Saturday Jan. 7 and Sunday Jan. 8 here at Faith). The problem with Christmas for me is that people tend to make the story of Jesus’ coming too superficial, too “ho-hum, another Christmas is over.” We tend to miss the depth of God’s plan and fulfillment.

That is, in a sense, what the Epiphany of Jesus means – to provide light, to illuminate, to shine forth. Jesus, after a long period of preparation by God, finally brings to light that meticulous plan of God of both promising and delivering a Son, who is God’s last Word in bringing salvation.

In a sense, Christmas and Epiphany can be described most fully with the term “fulfillment”. The writer to the Hebrews is distinguishing between the Old and the New Testaments as he speaks about prophecy and fulfillment. The He identifies seven facts about the Son to underscore the full divinity (Jesus is God!:

1. God identifies His Son as bearing “the very stamp of His nature”.

2. Jesus is heir of all things 3. Jesus is co-Creator of the world 4. Jesus reflects the glory of God 5. Jesus upholds the universe 6. Jesus cleansed the world of sin. 7. Jesus sits at the right hand of majesty.

Jesus, then is God’s best and last Word to us. This Good News of God’s love is both strengthening and uplifting when in faith, we who have received the Christ, who celebrated His birth, can also rejoice as we in turn “reflect” that Light by our lives and love.

Happy New Year: Pastor Don Treglown

The Shepherd’s Voice

Abide In My Love

If we have emailed each other since my time here at Faith you may have noticed my Scripture sign off: “See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” This is one of my favorite verses in the New Testament from 1 John 3:1(a). It will serve as our congregation’s Bible verse for 2017, centering on the theme: “Where does our identity reside?” To put it succinctly, our identity is fully and solely in God’s love perfectly manifested in His Son Jesus Christ. Our identity is in Jesus. Christ is the Father’s son by nature and essence. We become God’s children by sheer grace through the faith given to us by the Holy Spirit.

This whole year will be centered and focused on securing our true identity. The Greek work John uses for the word “see” denotes a desire for his readers to contemplate deeply. It is a seeing/perceiving not with the naked eye, but more so with the heart and mind guided solely by the Holy Spirit. We are encouraged to take heart and trust what God the Father gives, so that we may abide in it—His Son. For Jesus proclaimed: “As the Father has loved Me, so have I loved you. Abide in My love. If yoMy love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full” (John 15:9-11) Come let us abide in our God’s love! Come let us rejoice in the identity that has been showered upon us. We are God’s children now and always.

Your fellow Jesus abider, Pastor Sam

Mission of the YearIt all started in Spring 2011 when three people’s thoughts collided. Rev. Dr. Robert Scudieri was serving at Faith Lutheran Church in Naples, Florida at the time. Entertainment industry executive Rebeca Seitz and her then business partner, Steve Feldman, an Emmy-winning director, were up in Nashville. The three came together over a dinner at the home of James and Grace Seitz in Naples, where they discussed the general decline of American culture and the entertaiment industry’s ability to address it. They decided to hold a film festival and see if the local community had any interest in culture-enriching media – and making more of it.

The festival was held February 24, 2012, and Rebeca and Steve brought Micheal Flaherty, President of Walden Media, to be the keynote speaker at an opening dinner on Friday and a panelist for Saturday’s events. Other panelists included Howie Klausner (Space Cowboys), writer, director, and producer of The Grace Card and Michael Joiner, star of The Grace Card.

To introduce festival-goers to the wide conceptual range of Christian films and filmmakers, The Grace Card and Of Gods and Men were screened, with lively discussion following amongst the audience and panelists.

By the end of day two, the festival organizers could see that, yes, a large and sincere interest existed among the southwest Florida population.

As a few years have passed, and aving experienced explosive growth in 2014 and 2015, the SON Board of Trustees held an all-day meeting in May to review activity and determine whether the primary SON mission was being met. Did all of the activity serve to better society? To seed it with conservative values via mainstream media? Was SON the best home for each of the services offered?

At the end of that day, with the Board in unanimous agreement, a slightly edited mission statement and new tagline emerged:

SON exists to create relevant, mainstream media that has a positive impact on society.

In short,

We Make Media For Good.

SON is honored to have been selected to be the 20178 Mission of the Year at Faith Lutheran Church!
