Dear friends,
Your outpouring of love and support in the aftermath of my mother’s passing has left my family and me deeply moved. Rabbi
Schonbrun, Cantor Siegel, and all of you gave—and give—us strength at the worst time of our life. Your most generous
donations in my mother’s memory will go to a wonderful cause. My brother and I have established the Magdalena Stern
Holocaust Memorial Fund here at CTE. This fund will provide an annual cash prize to a 7th grade student for a written piece
work on the Holocaust. This year’s topic will be “The Emotional Impact of the Holocaust in its Survivors”. I remain profoundly
grateful to be a part of a community that cares for its own in good times and bad.

A Look Back As We Look Forward
The summer is here and synagogue life has quieted down somewhat. Of course there will still be happenings throughout the summer, but as the relative quiet of June and July set in, I wanted to take a few moments to reflect back on our year at Congregation Torat El.
1. We began last fall with a delightful Shabbat at the beach as we enjoyed the beauty of God's creation and appreciated the blessings of living on the shore.
2. We were honored to have Dr. Eli Wiesel speak to us, thanks to the generous support of the B’nai Sholom/Beth El Foundation—a night that all of us will remember for years to come!
3. We celebrated our past and looked forward to our
future as we sold a building, and truly came together as one at our dedication ceremony last Hanukkah. We worked hard to create a building that is more welcoming and friendly, and are continuing to work daily to bring a model of friendly customer service into our synagogue culture.
4. We celebrated many Shabbatot, and B’nai Mitzvah
together, welcomed babies into the Jewish community at baby namings, and mourned together over the losses in our community.
5. We had many wonderful Men's club and Sisterhood events, including (but not limited to) a trivia bowl, Hanukkah party for the congregation, sushi making with the owners of a local sushi restaurant, and a Women's Seder.
6. We prayed together daily, taking a few minutes at the end of each service to learn some Jewish life wisdom and, when appropriate, we shared stories of the loved ones whose memory we had come to honor.
7. We spent Shabbatot together and began to work towards a Shabbat model with opportunities for different groups of people within our community by having family services, musical and non-musical services, and adding a late Friday night service once a month.
8. Our Hazak chapter continued to thrive as we took trips to the Jewish Museum in Philadelphia, had a wonderful Hazak Shabbat and paid up BBQ, and watched a number of delightful movies together.
9. Our adult education committee thrived as we had a record number of different classes about a wide range of topics, took a trip to NY to visit the Jewish Theological Seminary (and had some delicious Deli!), and of course, had our first wonderful Scholar in Residence weekend at Congregation Torat El.
10. Our chesed/caring committee worked quietly and
diligently behind the scenes to bring comfort to those who were in the hospital or had lost a loved one throughout the year.
From The Rabbi’s Study...
11. Our youth program had a wonderful year filled with learning and social experiences both inside and outside the classroom. Whether we were engaged in family education, doing a social action project, taking a trip to NY to learn about the Jewish perspective on bullying, visit JTS, and take in a play, or hosting a matzah baking factory with our pre k-2 graders, we had a won-derful year together.
12. Our strategic planning committee worked tirelessly to put out and analyze a survey concerning our future direction
as we work to build a vibrant and dynamic Congregation Torat El. Over the summer, in conjunction with our Board of Trustees, we will be formulating a vision and mission that is based on our shared values and setting goals for our congregation as we move forward to a bright future!
In short, we had a wonderful year with many different programs and activities whose purpose was to build and deepen relationships by engaging our members in the richness, wisdom, power, and beauty of Jewish life. We have much work to do as we continue to grow, but we have so much to be proud of as we look back at this year!
So this summer, as you are sitting and relaxing on the beach, ask yourself how you want to be involved in this coming year. If there is something that you would like to see us do to help you connect to Judaism that we are not doing, please speak up. We want to hear from you! Feel free to E-mail, call, or set up an appointment with me to share your hopes and dreams for your congregation.
Finally, I want to thank our Executive Board, Board of Trustees, staff, and all of our volunteers who work
tirelessly each and every day as we seek to build a
kehillah kedosha, a holy community at Congregation Torat El. None of this would be possible without their hard work and dedication.
Hazak, Hazak, V'nithazek. As a congregation we are strong. I hope and pray that we will continue to grow strong and strengthen one another as we continue to move forward together!

My name is Mark Abrams, and I will become a Bar Mitzvah on June 23, 2012. I’m very excited for the day to come, because I have worked for many years towards this accomplishment. It will be a special day for me and my family. My grandfather and namesake, Mark Abrams, was a past-president of the congregation and I am proud to carry on his good name. My other grandfather, Ira Merbaum, was an inspiration and a role model for me up to his passing last November. I will be thinking of him, knowing how proud he will be of me on my special day.
I live in Tinton Falls with my mom and dad, Wendy and Paul and my sister, Sayde and my dog, Charli. My Mitzvah Project is to collect and donate toys, leashes, bowls, blankets and other items for the two shelters who took great care of Charli before she came to our family. Donation boxes will be set up at the Temple the weeks leading up to my Bar Mitzvah for anyone interested in making a donation. I am a dedicated baseball player – I play for 3 teams this spring, and am at a practice or game almost every day of the week! It’s my favorite season….I wait for it all year long. Nothing
makes me happier than to be on the ball field, hearing the crack of the bat and running to make a play for my team.
My torah portion is Korach, which is a section that deals with leadership and making good decisions for unselfish reasons. I
think this is a perfect section for me, because I try to always make good choices and try to lead by example for my team-
mates and friends. I am no “Korach!”
Please join my family and me on Saturday June 23rd
for a kiddush following the service for my Bar Mitzvah.

TREE OF LIFE
The Tree of Life located in the main lobby of our synagogue is now up and complete. Thanks to a generous donation from the Men’s Club, our tree is a cohesive, beautiful piece of art representing milestones
from Temple Beth Torah, Temple Beth El and B’nai Sholom.
If you would like to purchase a leaf or apple to add to our Tree of Life please contact the temple office at 732-531-4410.

PLEASE SUPPORT OUR WONDERFUL ADVERTISERS
Greetings From The
Congregation Torat El Chesed Committee
We are a budding group of Temple volunteers dedicated to helping members of our congregation through acts of loving-kindness. We currently provide a gift to a family with a new baby; one meal to a member recovering from a medical crisis, send a get well card; one Shiva platter to a family in our local Temple family during the Shiva period;
a phone call to say we are thinking about you; a get-well card designed by our own Carli Isaacson.
We welcome your assistance to add to the small list of volunteers as we proceed to provide our services to the congregation.
To quote Carli Isaacson, our 14 year old “Card Princess,”
“The little kind things in life that you do for somebody or somebody does for you make you smile and make
others smile too! Those little things add sunshine to your day. I love making people smile.”
Please let a co-chair of this committee know of your interest in helping with any of the above areas.
Also, please contact the Temple office if you or another congregant is in need of the
committee’s services.

Leah Zimmerman 732-229-8623 or [email protected]
Donations can be made to the Helayne Berger Fund to further the efforts of the Chesed Committee
