3// ORGANIZATION

The [Spain/in/India] Cooperation Classroom is part of the Culture of the Habitat Research Group, based at the Department of Architectural Projects at Madrid School of Architecture (ETSAM). This has been possible thanks to the agreement signed between the Brihati Foundation of India and the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid UPM in Spain.The Brihati Foundation, based in Ahmedabad, develops philanthropic actions in various social and cultural fields, as well as in areas linked to urbanism and architecture.

The [Spain/in/India] Cooperation Classroom is conceived as an open-source platform for the development of diverse academic activities linked to the enhancement of the immense cultural legacy and material of India and Spain. This international link, addresses cooperation in parallel and in both directions between both realities. The creation of an international knowledge network will be the basis on which to establish its continuity and solvency, acting as a condenser of knowledge, think tank, in order to promote social progress through analysis and reflection on habitat from architecture

This summer course is organized within the activities of the [Spain/in/India] Cooperation Classroom in continuity with last summer. In 2019 two summer courses were organized, one in Madrid and the other in Ahmedabad, in which 50 students of seven nationalities participated. Seventeen proposals were presented, attended by 14 teachers, and 8 lectures were given. Before each course, an architectural journey was made. But the most fascinating of all were the immense experiences lived .....

// ORGANIZACIÓN

El Aula Coopera [Spain/in/India] está inscrita en el Grupo de investigación Cultura del Hábitat, perteneciente al Departamento de Proyectos Arquitectónicos DPA de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid ETSAM. Esta ha sido posible gracias al acuerdo marcado firmado entre la Brihati Foundation de India y la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid UPM en España Brihati Foundation, afincada en Ahmedabad, desarrolla acciones filantrópicas en diversos ámbitos sociales y culturales; así como en áreas vinculadas al urbanismo y la arquitectura.

El Aula coopera [Spain/in/India] está concebida como una plataforma de código abierto para el desarrollo de diversas actividades académicas vinculadas a la puesta en valor del inmenso legado cultural y material de India y España. Este vínculo internacional, plantea la cooperación en paralelo y en ambas direcciones entre ambas realidades. Crear una red de conocimiento internacional será la base sobre la cual poder asentar la continuidad y solvencia de la misma. Un condensador de conocimiento, think tank, en aras a promover el progreso social a través del análisis y la reflexión sobre el h bitat desde la arquitectura

Este curso de verano se organiza dentro de las actividades del Aula coopera [Spain/in/India] en continuidad con las llevadas el verano pasado. En 2019 se organizaron dos cursos de verano, uno en Madrid y otro en Ahmedabad, donde participaron 50 alumnos de siete nacionalidades. Se presentaron 17 propuestas, a las que asistieron 14 profesores, impartiéndose 8 conferencias. Antes de cada curso se realizó un viaje arquitectónico. Pero lo más fascinante de todo fueron las inmensas experiencias vividas

4// OBJECTIVES

Heritage represents the inheritance of our ancestors for the benefit of future generations These cultural legacies can be tangible -writings, art, photographs, films, artifacts, monuments, landscapes or buildings, as well as intangibles - folklore, traditions, languages or customs. All this configures a constant, complex and multifaceted process of relationships, in which each time contributes its contemporaneity by transforming and reconfiguring the process planning with and in heritage, not as an inert material, but as an operating system. Only from the knowledge, this valuable inheritance also constitutes an opportunity of our time to contribute, as far as possible, to its appreciation. We are not only to be ob- and con-servers, but also active actors of the memory of our present.

Architecture is a determining factor in the materiali ation, and support, of contemporaneity working with the pre-existing, from the existing to generate a projected reality, of the future. The actions will have their seed in real and personal on-site experimentation in situ with the cultural legacy on which they are founded, as well as in the place of intervention Their codification will be the basis on which to generate architectural alternatives. These pro-active architectural proposals can be approached from different project perspectives, promoting mechanisms of heritage conservation and activation through the coordination of international cooperation with local actions.

The students of the course will come into contact with cultural legacy through a one-week architectural journey visiting different locations and paradigmatic buildings.

Living for two weeks in the intervention city will allow you to get in touch with the immense local heritage through various organized tours, contact with neighborhood associations, attendance at specific conferences, presentations with professionals of recognized prestige. The aim of the actions will be to promote progress in the social and cultural habitat. Within the framework presented by the UN Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development, “Transforming our world”, orienting its ob ectives through the five P s Planet, People, Prosperity, Peace, Partnership.

// OBJETIVOS

El patrimonio representa la herencia de nuestros antepasados en beneficio de las generaciones futuras Estos legados culturales pueden ser tangibles -escritos, obras de arte, fotografías, películas, artefactos, monumentos, paisa es o edificaciones- como intangibles -folclore, tradiciones, lengua e o las costumbres- Todo ello configura un proceso constante, complejo y poliédrico de relaciones, en el cual cada tiempo aporta su contemporaneidad transform ndolo y reconfigur ndolo Proyectar con y en el patrimonio, no como material inerte sino como un sistema operativo. Solamente desde el conocimiento, esta valiosa herencia además supone una oportunidad de nuestro tiempo en la contribución en la medida de sus posibilidades de su puesta en valor. No sólo ser ob- y con-servadores, sino también actores activos de la memoria de nuestro presente.

La arquitectura es determinante en la materialización, y soporte, de la contemporaneidad. Trabajar con lo pre-existente, desde lo existente para generar una realidad proyectada, de futuro. Las acciones tendrán su simiente en la experimentación real in situ y personal en el legado cultural en el que se asientan así como en el lugar de intervención Su codificación ser n la base sobre la cual generar alternativas arquitectónicas. Estas propuestas arquitectónicas pro-activas se podrán abordar desde diferentes enfoques proyectuales promoviendo mecanismos de conservación y activación del patrimonio a través de la coordinación de la cooperación internacional con acciones locales.

5// SUMMER COURSE TOPIC

Cities, being large accumulators built of people, are places full of opportunities for intervention. The main objective will be to improve the urban heritage as a complex and multifaceted magma of material and immaterial elements. A view of architecture, not only as building but also looking at flows that activate habitat spaces, public spaces, sociability spaces, exchange spaces, political spaces, everyday life spaces, ambiguity spaces, contradictory spaces or intermediate spaces.

The wor shop entitled IDS C NDENSE S Updating heritage areas; alludes to a semantic paradox vacuum strategy versus condenser accumulation. We address the public space as a place of negotiation, spontaneous social representations, tribunes for demonstrations and demands, scenarios that can be reprogrammed according to circumstances, temporary supports for citi ens movements, urban showcases of contradictory society, accumulators of layers of collective memory.

We will work in Ahmedabad, founded in 1411, a walled city situated on the river Sabarmati, where monumental architecture of the previous centuries is present as temples and palaces of various religions. A city under British rule in 1817. A trading market of gold, silk and cotton run by mahajans, together with the opium trade to China, made the town flourish and progress rapidly. Ahmedabad was the city chosen by Mahatma Gandhi to spend the last years of his life and start the non-violent movement against colonial power in favour of self-determination for the Indian people. The place of intervention will be a paradigmatic scenario a public space representative of the city, a vacuum, a condenser Ahmedabad s Bhadra Square

The workshop in Ahmedabad in India will be the twin of another to be held in Madrid in Spain. Both are a continuation of the activities carried out last year by the [Spain/in/India] Cooperate Classroom. This is a global pro ect, with specific and local views a common theme but local responses derived from the vital experience in the place. VOIDS & CONDENSERS [Madrid] and [Ahmedabad] are two sides of the same coin. Participation in both experiences is compatible according to course schedules.

Las ciudades, como grandes contenedores construidos de gente, son lugares llenos de oportunidades donde intervenir. El objetivo principal será la mejora del patrimonio urbano como magma complejo y multifacético de elementos materiales e inmateriales. Una mirada desde la arquitectura no solo a trav s de la edificación sino sobre aquellos fluos que activan tanto espacios de hábitat, espacios públicos, espacios de sociabilidad, espacios de intercambio, espacios políticos, espacios de la vida cotidiana, espacios de ambigüedad, espacios contradictorios o espacios intermedios.

El taller titulado VOIDS & CONDENSERS. Updating heritage reas alude a una parado a sem ntica estrategia del vacío frente a la acumulación del condensador. Trabajar en el Espacio público como lugar de negociación, representaciones espontáneas sociales, tribunas de manifestaciones y reivindicaciones, escenarios reprogramables según las circunstancias, soportes temporales de los movimientos ciudadanos, escaparates urbanos de la sociedad contradictoria, acumuladores de capas de la memoria colectiva.

Trabajaremos en Ahmedabad, fundada en 1411; una ciudad amurallada situada a orillas del río Sabarmati, donde la arquitectura monumental de los siglos anteriores, como templos y palacios de multitud de religiones siguen presentes. El rico comercio dirigido por mahaans basado en oro, seda y algodón unto con el

comercio de opio a China, hi o que la urbe floreciera y progresara rápidamente. Estuvo bajo dominio británico hasta 1817; siendo el lugar elegido por Mahatma Gandhi para pasar los últimos años de su vida. Fue foco del movimiento no violento contra el poder colonial a favor de la autodeterminación del pueblo indio El lugar de intervención ser un escenario paradigm tico Un espacio público representativo de la ciudad. Un vacío, un condensador; la Bhadra Square de Ahmedabad.

El taller de Ahmedavad en India será gemelo de otro que llevaremos a cabo en Madrid en España, Ambos son continuidad de las actividades desarrolladas el año pasado por el Aula Coopera [Spain/in/India]. Un proyecto global, con miradas específicas y locales un tema común pero con respuestas locales derivadas de la experiencia vital en el lugar. VOIDS & CONDENSERS [Madrid] y [Ahmedabad] son dos caras de una misma moneda siendo compatible su participación en ambas experiencias ya que los calendarios lo permiten.

[From DELHI to CHANDIGARH, and from CHANDIGARH to AHMEDABAD]

Travel l ing is a fundamental and indispensable exper ience to learn architecture. Gett ing to know places, going through their spaces, feel ing their changing atmospheres, gaining vital exper iences with users and inhabitants. Al l provide knowledge committed to the intervened real i ty. The architectural journey is a search, a discovery, an adventure, a constel lat ion of what a project was once. To enter into real contact with the environment, cl imatic condit ions, terrain, natural resources, people, latent culture, mater ial i ty and social events.

The exper ience of knowing paradigmat ic arch i tectures that have deal t w i th her i tage as a cumulat ive mechanism of references . Th i s i s p resented in the f i r s t week of the workshop as par t of the academic program. The t rans i t w i l l be in tense, exp lor ing d i f fe rent proposa l s that are par t of the arch i tectura l legacy to in t roduce the workshop.

// VIAJE DE ESTUDIO

[De DELHI a CHANDIGARH, y de CHANDIGARH a AHMEDABAD]

Viajar es una experiencia fundamental e indispensable para aprender arquitectura. Conocer lugares, recorrer sus espacios, sentir sus atmósferas cambiantes, tener experiencias vitales con usuarios y habitantes. Todo ello en aras a tener un conocimiento comprometido con la realidad intervenida. El viaje arquitectónico es una búsqueda, un descubrimiento, una aventura, una constelación de lo que algún momento fue un proyecto. Entrar en contacto real con el ambiente, las condiciones climáticas, la orografía, los recursos naturales, las gentes, la cultura latente, la materialidad y los eventos sociales.

La exper iencia de conocer arquitecturas paradigmáticas que han tratado con el patr imonio, como mecanismo acumulat ivo de referencias. Este se presenta en la pr imera semana del tal ler como parte del programa académico. E l t ránsito será intenso, explorando diferentes propuestas que son parte del legado arquitectónico. Un viaje in iciát ico del tal ler.

E l v iaje será de [DELHI a CHANDIGARH, y de CHANDIGARH a AHMEDABAD]. Parafraseando a Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oíza, convert i remos nuestro autobús en la mejor clase de proyectos. E l t rayecto* de ida y vuelta entre estas dos grandes urbes indias nos permit i rá parar en diferentes lugares intermedios de interés, v is i tando numerosas propuestas en lugares y ant iguos templos en Patan, Udaipur, Jaipur, Delhi y Amritsar, entre otros.

Vis i taremos proyectos y espacios públ icos relevantes de diferentes épocas como BV Doshi , Charles Correa, Louis Kahn, Le Corbusier, y mult i tud de lugares arqueológicos.

Yatin Pandya [India] // Autor, activista, académico, investigador y arquitecto en ejercicio, con su firma FOOTPRINTS E.A.R.T.H. (Environment Architecture Research Technology Housing). Graduado en CEPT University de Ahmedabad, ha obtenido el título de Master of Architecture en la McGill University, Montreal. Ha estado involucrado en planificación urbana, diseño urbano, vivienda masiva, larquitectura, diseño de interiores, diseño de productos y proyectos de conservación. Ha ganado más de treinta y ocho premios nacionales e internacionales por diseño arquitectónico, investigación y difusión. Los más recientes han sido la mención especial del premio de hábitat de las Naciones Unidas y el Premio de Diseño de la Fundación Curry Stone de los Estados Unidos para la práctica sostenible. Ha escrito más de trescientos artículos en revistas nacionales e internacionales; así como varios libros sobre arquitectura, especialmente “Conceptos del espacio en la arquitectura tradicional india” y “Elementos de la creación del espacio” los cuales han sido publicados internacionalmente. También ha participado en la preparación de más de 30 documentales sobre arquitectura. Ha sido profesor invitado en el National Institute of Design y CEPT University;. Profesor invitado y crítico en varias universidades de la India y en el extranjero. Ha servido como guía de tesis para casi 300 estudiantes de grado, máster y doctorado. Ha dado conferencias en más de quince países en más de una centena de foros. La sostenibilidad ambiental, la adecuación sociocultural, la estética intemporal y la accesibilidad económica son principios clave de su trabajo.

Meghal Arya [India] // Socia principal de Arya Architects, estudio de arquitectura con Vijay Arya. Arquitecta por la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad CEPT, completando sus estudios de posgrado en el Instituto de Tecnología de Georgia, Atlanta. Doctorada por la Universidad CEPT-Ahmedabad. Su trabajo intenta lograr un equilibrio apropiado entre las relaciones sociales, el entorno físico y los conceptos abstractos creando espacios fluidos simples. Los proyectos en el ámbito público intentan recuperar la inclusión de este ámbito a través de la arquitectura. Sus proyectos construidos han tratado diferentes programas como la movilidad pública, instituciones educativas, proyectos especiales como un parque zoológico e instalaciones deportivas. Actualmente, es profesora asociada en la Facultad de Arquitectura de la Universidad CEPT, Ahmedabad. Su investigación plantea la relación entre la arquitectura tradicional india y su relevancia en el contexto contemporáneo. Con numerosas publicaciones en su haber, Meghal busca continuamente el equilibrio entre lo académico y la práctica profesional. Docente desde el año 2000, en instituciones internacionales en Madrid, Viena y Milán, se centra en la relación espacial del agua con las ciudades, las personas y sus expresiones arquitectónicas. Más recientemente, ha publicado un libro “Ecología espacial del agua”. También diseña y es comisaria de programas de desarrollo de la facultad para profesores de arquitectura.

Yatin Pandya [India] // Author, activist, academician, researcher as well as the practising architect, with his firm FOOTPRINTS E.A.R.T.H. (Environment Architecture Research Technology Housing). Graduate of CEPT university. He has availed Master of Architecture degree from McGill University, Montreal. Yatin has been involved with city planning, urban design, mass housing, architecture, interior design, product design as well as conservation projects. Yatin has won over thirty eight National and International awards for architectural design, research as well as dissemination. The most recent ones have been the United nation s habitat award special mention and United State s Curry Stone Foundation Design Pri e for sustainable practice. He has written over three hundred articles in National and International Journals. Several books authored by him on architecture, especially “Concepts of space in traditional Indian architecture”, and “Elements of space making” have been published internationally. He has also been involved in preparing over 30 video documentaries on Architecture. He has been visiting faculty at National Institute of Design and CEPT University and guest lecturer/ critic to various universities in India and abroad. He has served as thesis guide to nearly 300 Graduate, Masters and PhD students e has lectured in over fifteen countries in over hundred fora. Environmental sustainability, Socio-cultural appropriateness, Timeless aesthetics and Economic affordability are key principles of his work.

Meghal Arya [India] // Principal designer and partner at Arya Architects, a niche award-winning practice, with Vijay Arya, is a graduate from School of Architecture, CEPT University and has completed her postgraduate studies at the Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta and PhD from CEPT University. Her work attempts to strike the appropriate balance between social relations, physical environs and abstract concepts creating simple fluid spaces The proects in the public realm attempt to bring back the inclusiveness of this domain through architecture. The portfolio includes projects related to public mobility, educational institutions, special projects like a zoological park and sports facilities. Currently, she is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Architecture at CEPT University, Ahmedabad. Her research probes into traditional Indian architecture and its relevance in the contemporary context. With numerous publications to her credit, Meghal continuously searches for the balance between academics and practice. Teaching since 2000, including at international institutions in Madrid, Wien, and Milan, her focus is on the spatial relation of water to the cities, people and its architectural expressions. Most recently, she has published a book ‘Spatial Ecology of ater She also designs and curates faculty development programs for teachers in architecture.

Workshop fees 750,00 €From July 14 to 26. The workshop will offer more than 70 hours of project design, several conferences of first level professionals, different guests at the two joint corrections sessions at the end of the week; as well as some architectural itinerary through the city of Madrid.
