Introduction
What is Call Shops? A Call Shop is a place where customers can go and make local and international
telephone calls. Call Shops, also called as Public Call Offices (PCOs) and uses VoIP technology and can be known as a replacement for traditional telephones(PSTN).
What is VOIP? VOIP is a method for taking analog audio signals and turning them into digital
data that can be transmitted over the internet or VoIP is the technology used to transmit voice conversations over a data network using IP.
VoIP allows you to make telephone calls using a computer network, over a data network like the Internet. VoIP uses the internet as its medium to send voice.
Many names, different meaning to different people:
• Soft-switching• Next Generation Voice Network• IP Telephony• Voice over Internet• Voice over Internet Protocol• Voice over Packet• IP Communications
Ways of Using VoIP-• PC to PC• PC to Phone• Phone to PC• Phone to Phone
Protocols Required for VoIP-
• SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) - is a application layer control simple signaling protocol for VoIP implementations.
• H323- Framework for multimedia communication and allow multimedia transmission through an unreliable packet-based network.
Disadvantages of VoIP
• VoIP is less reliable than PSTN. • VoIP is dependent on wall power. This means that when electricity
goes off, we can’t use VoIP. However, there is no such a problem on PSTN.
• VoIP applications can be attacked by worms and viruses and can be exposed to hacking.
• VOIP implementations face problems dealing with-• Echo: waving of voice• Latency: Changing in delivery time between voice packets• Jitter: Changing in delivery order of voice packets
Advantages of VOIP-
• VoIP uses less bandwidth when it is compared to PSTN. Therefore, it decreases the cost of operators.
• VoIP applications also offer low or no cost for customers. Only a headphone and microphone is enough for a basic VoIP application.
• Another advantage of VoIP is portability Call forwarding, call waiting, voicemail, caller ID and three-way calling.
• Flexible network layout- VoIP can be used over wireless networks like Wi-Fi.
• Fax over IP-The problems of fax services using PSTN are high cost for long distances. Real-time fax transmission on VoIP simply uses a fax interface to convert the data into packets and ensures complete delivery of the data in a very reliable way.
Methodology - The design of this research was descriptive in nature with all sources found through web based articles.
