CURes StudentResearchers– Fall2017CohortIntheFall2017semester,CURes hadsixundergraduateindependentresearchstudents:Armaan Zare (‘18),AlexIsaev(‘18),MatthewAllegretti (Winter‘17),StephenGloudeman(‘18),SarahBruce-Eisen (‘18),andMelissaMorado (‘19).
Zare,Isaev,Allegretti,andGloudeman workedwithDr.PeteAugeroncoyoteinteractionsinLongBeach,CA.Theyworkedintwoteamstoassesscoyoteabundance,dispersalandmovementpatterns,diet,andhumanimpactthroughtwosources.Zare andIsaev focusedonscatanalysisandresearchedmethodsforsolidsandDNAextracation toimplementinSpringof2018.Allegretti andGloudeman usedthegamecameradatatocreatetemporalgraphs,whichtheycouldthenanalyzeforcoyotebehavioralpatterns.
Bruce-Eisen createdaresearchprojecttoimplementintheBallona Wetlandsonmosquitosandvectorcontrol.ShewillbeworkingcloselywithDr.Demian Willette (LMUBiology)tocontinuethisworkintheSpring.
Morado workedonseveralprojectsforCURes andalsoservedastheTAfortheUrbanEcologyLab.ShecontinuedherworkonhummingbirdthermalimageryanddidsomevolunteeringwiththeAnnenbergPetSpace.Morado wasalsointerviewedforanarticleinthemostrecentissueofLMUMagazinetodiscussherinvolvementinthehummingbirdtorporproject.

OnJanuary2nd,LisaFimiani (CURes)andTracyDrake(ManagerofParkServicesfortheCityofTorranceandNaturalist)conductedaChristmasBirdCountatLMU.Injustovertwohoursofbirding,thepairsaw33differentspecies!CountsweredoneacrosstheLosAngelesarea,with165speciescurrentlyreported.

Dr.Willette isaBiologyinstructoratLMU.Hecurrentlyresearchesillegalfishingandspeciessubstitutionthroughgenetictesting.Dr.Willette appliesthisworktosustainabilitypracticesandbelievesitisimportantfordeterminingfishingquotastomaintainoceanhealth.HealsoconductsecologicalrestorationworkatDebsParkinLosAngelesandworksasanAssistantProjectScientistatUCLA.
Dr.IsaacBrownisaspecialistingreeninfrastructureandsustainabilityandtheowneroftheIsaacBrownEcologyStudio.HealsoservesontheLosAngelesMayor’sBiodiversityTaskForce,withthegoalofcreatingabiodiversityinventoryofLosAngeles.Dr.Brownpreviously
RestorativeJustice2017UpdateThroughout2017,CURes RestorativeJustice(RJ)Projectteamsawgreatsuccessimplementingtheir
programsthroughtrainingworkshops,speakingengagements,communityconferences,andcommunitybuildingevents.TheRJProjectpartnerswithschooldistrictstoimplementRestorativePracticestoimproveschoolcultureandclimate.Thiscommunityfocusedapproachencouragesallschoolstake
holderstoproactivelybuildrelationshipsandwhencrimeandconflictoccur,workcollectivelytowardcommunity-basedsolutions.Thisinnovatealternativetothetraditionalsystemallowsforrootcausesof
conflicttobeaddressed,reducingthelikelihoodofrecurringevents.
In2017,TheRJteamtrainedover300educatorsandcounselorsfrom16schoolsinRestorativePracticesimplementation.TheRJProjectalsoprovidedsupporttotheRiversideUnifiedSchoolDistrict(RUSD)inresponsetotheirhostagecrisisatCastleViewElementarySchoolthatoccurredon10/31/17.TheRJ
teamhadspeakingengagementsduringProfessorScottWood’sandProfessorBryanMiller’scoursesatLMU,aswellasattheannual“BeyondtheBench2017”conferenceinSanDiego.Additionally,SchoeneMahmood,anRJspecialist,attendedtrainingsbytheLADepartmentofHealthtolearntechniquesfortheorganizationtobeoptimallyeffective.Finally,theRJprogramrenewedfundingfromtheCollinsFoundation,AnonymousFoundation,andrenewedpartnershipswiththeRiversideUnifiedSchool
District(RUSD)andAspirePublicSchools.

AnnenbergPetSpace JanuaryEventsCURes partnerswiththeAnnenbergPetSpace tostudythehuman-animalbondandurbanpetdynamics.
InJanuary,theAnnenbergPetSpace,locatedinPlayaVista,ishostingavarietyofevents.EveryWednesdaythismonthat12pmis“WalkingWednesday,”wereparticipantscanlearntipsonbetterleash-walkingtechniques.EverySaturdaythismonthat12pmis“SchoolingSaturday,”wherePetSpace staffwillteachguestsabouttrainingtechniquesthatfacilitateadoptionandwhatbehaviorstoexpectfromnewpets.
OnSaturday,January20from12-1pmtherewillbealecturebyDr.CliveWynne,aprofessorofbehavioralpsychologyatArizonaStateUniversity.Dr.Wynnewilldiscussthecomplexitiesofdogadoption,aswellashumananddogwelfareimpacts.
