IEEE MAS LINK Vol. 14 No.6 Jun 2017 Page 1 Vol. 14 :: No. 6 :: Jun 2017 Message from Chairman Dear Members, Hello students! Hope you have slowly settled with your courses and colleges. How do you like to proceed? There is a tendency for students to relax once they get into their college and course of their choice. This is detrimental to you. Unlike other courses, engineering courses are highly demanding, if one wants to excel. Also without excelling, one would be way behind. There are cases when really good students at school start relaxing and start failing in subjects at first year and instead of clearing them soon, start accumulating and get into psychological issues and depression. So beware that you cannot relax hereafter. Be on your toes and try to cope up with classes and extra-curricular activities with IEEE and other professional bodies which could be a source for great learning, team building, career development and also relaxation. As far as student branches are concerned, it is noticed that there are many student branches in dormant state under IEEE Madras. I have earlier also expressed my concerns to those colleges. Still many have not revived. As already announced, we will be formally taking decision to close them down as quality is important and not quantity. IEEE Madras is planning to conduct a Mini POCO (Panel of Conference Organizers) event soon, in which all aspects to conduct a conference would be explained by seasoned veterans in the field. Faculty, researchers and students are welcome to attend the same, the details of which will be put up on our website along with publishing in the newsletter and reaching you by email. As indicated earlier, I see many proposals for conducting international conferences, which are one off type. I earnestly suggest members to bid for prestigious IEEE conferences, which are conducted world over by various societies. These require preparations of more than 5 to 6 years’ time. Let us make a start at least. Additionally, we have shared the detailed guidelines and norms for the technical sponsorship from the Section for the conferences being organized by our SBs. We encourage members to be in touch with the chairs & co-chairs of various sub-committees of the IEEE Madras Section whose details are published in the newsletter and also available on our website for assistance if required. Those of you who are regular readers of the IEEE MAS LINK would have got a survey questionnaire as to know whether the quarterly print edition of the newsletter should be continued or not. While it is good to have a printed copy, it has both advantages and disadvantages. The cost of printing and posting is a major expenditure unless there are sponsors for the same. Also, significant efforts are also needed by our editorial team to abstract information from the detailed digital monthly newsletter to prepare this abstract print edition. It is disheartening to note that there has been no feedback for our earlier issues of quarterly print editions. Digital ones are now a days easier to read on the move. Those who need a hardcopy can also print and preserve. I am aware that a number of SBs print the monthly newsletter and keep them as record for various purposes. I am sure that you would have exercised your option by filling up the online google survey form indicating your preference. The final decision in this regard will be communicated soon. Message from Chairman

Dear Members,

Hello students! Hope you have slowly settled with your courses and colleges. How do you

like to proceed? There is a tendency for students to relax once they get into their college and

course of their choice. This is detrimental to you. Unlike other courses, engineering courses

are highly demanding, if one wants to excel. Also without excelling, one would be way

behind. There are cases when really good students at school start relaxing and start failing in

subjects at first year and instead of clearing them soon, start accumulating and get into

psychological issues and depression. So beware that you cannot relax hereafter. Be on your toes and try to cope up

with classes and extra-curricular activities with IEEE and other professional bodies which could be a source for

great learning, team building, career development and also relaxation.

As far as student branches are concerned, it is noticed that there are many student branches in dormant state under

IEEE Madras. I have earlier also expressed my concerns to those colleges. Still many have not revived. As already

announced, we will be formally taking decision to close them down as quality is important and not quantity.

IEEE Madras is planning to conduct a Mini POCO (Panel of Conference Organizers) event soon, in which all

aspects to conduct a conference would be explained by seasoned veterans in the field. Faculty, researchers and

students are welcome to attend the same, the details of which will be put up on our website along with publishing in

the newsletter and reaching you by email. As indicated earlier, I see many proposals for conducting international

conferences, which are one off type. I earnestly suggest members to bid for prestigious IEEE conferences, which are

conducted world over by various societies. These require preparations of more than 5 to 6 years’ time. Let us make a

start at least. Additionally, we have shared the detailed guidelines and norms for the technical sponsorship from the

Section for the conferences being organized by our SBs.

We encourage members to be in touch with the chairs & co-chairs of various sub-committees of the IEEE Madras

Section whose details are published in the newsletter and also available on our website for assistance if required.

Those of you who are regular readers of the IEEE MAS LINK would have got a survey questionnaire as to know

whether the quarterly print edition of the newsletter should be continued or not. While it is good to have a printed

copy, it has both advantages and disadvantages. The cost of printing and posting is a major expenditure unless there

are sponsors for the same. Also, significant efforts are also needed by our editorial team to abstract information from

the detailed digital monthly newsletter to prepare this abstract print edition. It is disheartening to note that there has

been no feedback for our earlier issues of quarterly print editions. Digital ones are now a days easier to read on the

move. Those who need a hardcopy can also print and preserve. I am aware that a number of SBs print the monthly

newsletter and keep them as record for various purposes. I am sure that you would have exercised your option by

filling up the online google survey form indicating your preference. The final decision in this regard will be

communicated soon.

Dear Readers,

We are happy to present the sixth issue of IEEE MAS LINK in 2017. As many universities and colleges were in

summer break, understandably, there is a dip in activities and so the reports in this issue.

On 31st May, 2017, IEEE announced its participation at the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) Forum to

be held from 12 to 16 June in Geneva. The annual Forum gathers global multi-stakeholders to discuss the role of

Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) as a means of implementation for the United Nations

(UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The WSIS Forum focuses on making the information society

accessible to all citizens of the world. It is heartening to see IEEE becoming an import stakeholder in UN SDGs

along with pursuing its mission Advancing Technology for Humanity.

50 ways to avoid getting hacked in 2017: 1. Backup your data. If you get hit with ransomware, you don't have to

pay if you have backups; 2. Use a syncstop when you have to charge your phone in a public place, or bring your

own battery backup; 3. Take advantage of the auditing subsystems. There are lots of cool tools to help monitor your

system. If you do have a break in, the audit system might well be able to tell you what happened and what the

attacker did; 4. Speaking of logs, offloading the logs to a centralized server is always a good idea because if a hacker

breaks into your system, the first thing he is going to attack is the logging system to cover his tracks. Having a good

intrusion system watching the logs also helps. To know other 46 ways, pl. visit https://goo.gl/mz92FW

2016 Open Source Yearbook: Opensource.com publishes the Open Source Yearbook, in collaboration with open

source communities by collecting a diverse range of stories. The latest 2016 yearbook highlights more than 100

organizations, projects, technologies, and events. https://goo.gl/yrztaQ

Bits and bolts: The past, present, and future of open hardware: "Open source" isn't just a methodology for

developing software. It's a way to think about building anything, including the devices that utilize that software.

Hardware, too, can be open—easily copied, shared, modified, and improved. What would the world be like if the

objects that surround us became less mysterious, if not only the bits but also the bolts became something into which

we could peer? What if the enigmatic black boxes that occupy our desks, our homes, our skies—even our bodies—

suddenly became transparent? During Open Hardware Week at Opensource.com, we asked more than a dozen open-

minded technologists to explain how applying open source principles to physical devices is shaping the way we

work and play—now and in the future. They answered with so many wonderful things: flashlights made from lip

balm, automated pet feeders, computerized guitar pedals, even 3D-printed prosthetics. And for a few dazzling days,

we saw how that open world was becoming a reality. https://goo.gl/wCQ3Ud

Agile Innovation: As a 21st-century Mark Twain might observe, everybody talks about innovation, but nobody

does anything about it. Of course, that’s not quite right. Several path-breaking thinkers have come up with better

ways to design new products. The problem is that anywhere from 70% to 90%1 of those new products continue to

fail. Lacking a systematic, repeatable and fast-moving method for designing and developing innovations, companies

find themselves struggling to keep up with market changes. But there is hope. Agile methodologies have transformed

the software industry over the past 25 or 30 years. Software development is an especially challenging form of

innovation since technologies and customer demands seem to change at the speed of Moore’s law. Software is also

playing an increasingly important role in nearly every element of business. (As they say, every company is now a

software company, whether its executives know it or not.) So it’s worth looking into how the industry has changed

and what lessons it might hold for innovation in the rest of the organization. To be sure, many questions remain. In

which contexts is Agile most useful, and in which is it less relevant? What does Agile look like and feel like when it

ventures outside of its software-based home? What role should senior executives, who were mostly spectators

during IT’s transformation, play in such an ambitious undertaking? What are the keys to success? Let’s turn to those

questions. https://goo.gl/EdV2Vs

What are Hackathons for?: A swift execution from idea to market has become a key competitive advantage for

software companies to enable them to survive and grow in turbulent business environments. To combat this

challenge, companies are using hackathons. A hackathon is a highly engaging, continuous event in which people in

small groups produce working software prototypes in a limited amount of time. F-Secure, a software product

company, views hackathons as a possible solution to the fundamental business problem of how to make revenue

from an idea, spanning the phases from creating the idea to producing a software prototype. However, hackathons

pose the challenge of how to transform those promising prototypes into finalized products that create revenue and

real business value. https://goo.gl/aa1TyJ

Now free: citation data from 14 million papers, and more might come: Consider this: A scientist publishes a

study citing other papers. Those cited papers, in turn, cite studies that came before them. But much of that citation

information—which is often of great interest to scientists tracking research trends and hot topics—has not been

available freely. Enter the Initiative for Open Citations (I4OC), a project aiming to make citation data free to all,

formally announced today by six organizations, including the Wikimedia Foundation, publisher Public Library of

Science, and the open-access journal eLife. So far, the initiative has partnered with 29 journal publishers to enable

anyone to access citation data from about 14 million papers indexed by Crossref, a nonprofit collaboration that

promotes the sharing of scholarly information. And more publishers are likely to sign on, says Mark Patterson,

executive director of eLife, in Cambridge, U.K. https://goo.gl/y23QbX

Nice Performance Management: Effectiveness Through Accountability: Performance management is clearly

becoming a priority for organizations interested in the twin drivers of long-term success – workforce optimization

(WFO) and increased customer satisfaction. In fact, SaddleTree Research reported an astounding increase in demand

for performance management solutions in 2015. Take an innovative approach to WFO. Evaluate factors in employee

behavior that drive success by focusing on these key measurements: Goal Management; Opportunity Identification;

Agent Engagement; Agent Guidance; and Agent Collaboration. https://goo.gl/n81f11

What is the Blockchain and Why is it So Important?: Blockchain is growing in importance. Increasingly

organisations have to explore what this revolutionary technology will mean for their business. Marc Andreessen

from the well-known VC firm Andreessen Horowitz calls it as big an invention as the internet. Last year, in my Big

Data Trends prediction for 2016, I already foresaw that 2016 would become the year of the Blockchain and now also

Gartner has included in their Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies. Many organisations are already exploring the

possibilities of the Blockchain, although primarily still in the Financial Services industry. The R3 Partnership is a

consortium of 45 of the biggest financial institutions, investigating what the Blockchain means for them. Next to the

R3 consortium, four of the biggest global banks, led by Swiss bank UBS, have developed a “Utility Settlement

Coin” (USC), which is the digital counterpart of each of the major currencies backed by central banks. Their

objective is to develop a settlement system that processes transactions in (near) real-time instead of days. A third

example is Australia Post, who have released plans for developing a blockchain-based e-voting system for the state

of Victoria. The possibilities of the Blockchain are enormous and it seems that almost any industry that deals with

some sort of transaction, which would mean any industry, can and will be disrupted by the Blockchain. As a result,

it is likely that many of these industries will face job losses since intermediaries will be needed a lot less.

Artificial Intelligence, Automation, and the Economy: Accelerating artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities will

enable automation of some tasks that have long required human labor. These transformations will open up new

opportunities for individuals, the economy, and society, but they have the potential to disrupt the current livelihoods

of millions of Americans. Whether AI leads to unemployment and increases in inequality over the long-run depends

not only on the technology itself but also on the institutions and policies that are in place. This 59 pages report

examines the expected impact of AI-driven automation on the economy, and describes broad strategies that could

increase the benefits of AI and mitigate its costs. https://goo.gl/m5a4SE

Here’s Why Every Millennial Needs a Mentor in the Tech Industry: Millennials are often unfairly given a bad

rap for doing things that other generations also do on a regular basis. They’re easy targets and older professionals

like to give them a hard time. So, this article isn’t meant to be a hit piece on millennials. Rather, it’s meant to expose

something that’s true: Every millennial who has aspirations of being successful in the tech space needs an older

mentor. https://goo.gl/Vrizhp

The 10 Best Quotes About Success From Mark Zuckerberg’s Harvard Commencement Address

1. "Purpose is that sense that we are part of something bigger than ourselves, that we are needed, that we have

something better ahead to work for. Purpose is what creates true happiness."

2. "There were all these big technology companies with resources. I just assumed one of them would do it.

But this idea was so clear to us — that all people want to connect. So we just kept moving forward, day by

day. I know a lot of you will have your own stories just like this. A change in the world that seems so clear

you're sure someone else will do it. But they won't. You will."

3. "Ideas don't come out fully formed. They only become clear as you work on them. You just have to get

started."

4. "The idea of a single eureka moment is a dangerous lie. It makes us feel inadequate since we haven't had

ours. It prevents people with seeds of good ideas from getting started."

5. "It's good to be idealistic. But be prepared to be misunderstood. Anyone working on a big vision will get

called crazy, even if you end up right. Anyone working on a complex problem will get blamed for not fully

understanding the challenge, even though it's impossible to know everything upfront. Anyone taking

initiative will get criticized for moving too fast, because there's always someone who wants to slow you

down."

6. "In our society, we often don't do big things because we're so afraid of making mistakes that we ignore all

the things wrong today if we do nothing. The reality is, anything we do will have issues in the future. But

that can't keep us from starting."

7. "The greatest successes come from having the freedom to fail."

8. "When you don't have the freedom to take your idea and turn it into a historic enterprise, we all lose. Right

now our society is way over-indexed on rewarding success and we don't do nearly enough to make it easy

for everyone to take lots of shots."

9. "We can all make time to give someone a hand. Let's give everyone the freedom to pursue their purpose —

not only because it's the right thing to do, but because when more people can turn their dreams into

something great, we're all better for it."

10. 10. "Change starts local. Even global changes start small — with people like us. In our generation, the

struggle of whether we connect more, whether we achieve our biggest opportunities, comes down to this —

your ability to build communities and create a world where every single person has a sense of purpose."

The IEEE Madras Section has been publishing a comprehensive monthly eNewsletter IEEE MAS LINK.

Also, for the last 18 months, we are also coming out with a quarterly print edition of the MAS LINK as a condensed

version with matter extracted from the monthly eNewsletter.

You can see the archives of both monthly eNewsletter & quarterly print newsletter

IEEE MAS LINK Vol. 14 No.6 Jun 2017 Page 19

This print edition is currently being posted to the professional members. Further two copies of the same are sent to

all engineering institutions in our Madras Section.

It has been observed that a significant amount of money is being spent in the printing and posting of this quarterly

print edition of IEEE MAS LINK. Over and above, a considerable amount of our editorial team time is also utilized

in this exercise.

However, we do not seen to have any feedback on this print edition from the recipients.

In this context, to ascertain whether we should continue with the print edition or not, a survey is being conducted. If

we do not receive significant support to continue the print edition, we would like to discontinue it from the 2nd

quarter issue of 2017 and use the amount saved for other activities at the Section.

A survey form is available at https://goo.gl/80gz3S as well as at

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/18QuNTpZfeeL7S2wBwK-pIxaK3Uh8R7jJk8yCCeopBJc

All the professional members are requested (without fail) to participate in this survey and provide their option (can

be stopped /to be continued) along with certain basic details.

As the decision in this regard is to be taken at the forthcoming execom, please complete the survey by 16th Jun

2017.

We look forward to your kind cooperation.

(This announcement was also sent to all members by email twice in the months of May & Jun 2017)

Guidelines for submitting reports and articles to get published in the IEEE MAS LINK newsletter

We are still getting the reports not adhering to the guidelines. While we write back to the SBCs and request them to

re-submit the reports as per the guidelines, some respond positively and quite a few do not. The editorial team is

constrained to ignore such reports. Further, it takes considerable time to communicate and keep track. Once again

we request all SBCs to follow the guidelines at https://goo.gl/bYB44pwhile submitting the reports.
