RE Report By Dave Geis March 9th. Remember that date to never have anything on the schedule for that day. Last year on our anniversary, Lu and I went to a Crash/Fire/Rescue school at Heartland Park. It was cold enough that everyone was looking forward to putting out the practice fires just to get some heat. This year’s anniversary was our frozen Solo at Boeing. While half of the people there were waddling around like the Michelin Man with layers and layers of clothes on, Richard Prestage was inside the trailer, holding his pen near the heater to thaw it out enough to write with. But everybody had a blast. 45 drivers (proving that there are a lot of us idiots out there) braved the cold to fi-nally get their first speed fix of the year. I would especially like to thank every-body that braved the cold and made the event possible. Being the “official” Safety Steward of the day, I was very worried about corner workers staying out

on the course for long periods and risk-ing frostbite (with wind chills at or be-low zero, a real possibility). We short-ened heats to only five cars - which made for a massive worker shortage. With only a few announcements on the PA systems, people were crawling out of the woodwork to volunteer to keep the event running. I can’t thank everyone enough. Check out our new Membership Appli-cation (page 18). If you remember, Speed Freakz is no more after June 1, 2003. We now have First Gear, with a new age limit of 21. I f you are a Speed Freakz member, and over 21, you’ll have to renew as a regular member. See or call Charlene Bettinger for more details. Woo Hoo! A Rally!!! Check out page 5 for the First Annual Road Dog Rally coming up on May 10th. Not only has Greg Laws promised some great roads to drive on, any profit will be donated to a great charity - the Kansas Humane Soci-ety. I guarantee that we’ll be havin’ fun on this one! Are we havin’ fun yet?

Solo Scene By Paul Sherman We finally got our Solo season started a few weeks ago, and by the time you read this we should have our second Solo in the books. If you missed the first event, you missed a seriously fun course. It was awfully cold out, but that didn’t stop a bunch of folks from coming out. I think the temperature was 16 degrees and the wind chill was 5 de-grees. I think by the time we finished the temp was up to 24 degrees. Boy Howdy! We had 45 entries, which I think is fantastic considering the weather. Thanks to Dave Geis (or whoever had the idea) for running 5 car heats. It meant the workers didn’t have to stay out in the cold and wind very long. I think everybody appreciated that! Thanks to Rob and Mike for chairing the event and coming up with a really fun course. It looks like we might use that one again. I heard a lot of folks say they want to run that one again when the weather warms up.

I really want to thank everybody that was there helping out with the extra heats. Because of the weather and 5 car heats, it required a LOT of extra workers, and everyone did extra duty. It’s nice to see everybody pitching in. It was great to see John Dolecek and Joe Silva with their KSU crew come down from Manhattan. I saw quite a few new faces at our last event, and I think it’s great. Invite your friends and co-workers to one of our Solos and spread the word. I’d like to see our participation numbers go up significantly from last year. But it takes more than just a few people to make that happen. As it is, I STILL don’t have all the event chair and co-chair spots filled. This is what the list looks like: Mar 30 @ Boeing: Sargeant/Regen Apr 27 @ Strother: ? / ? Jun 1 @ WGP : Harrison/Green Jun 15 @ Strother: Thome/ ? Jul 27 @ Boeing: ? / ?

The hardest thing is coming up with a course, and that’s not too difficult. If you don’t have a truck to get the trailer on site, just let me know and I’ll get it there. Just pick an event date then call or e-mail me and I’ll send you an infor-mation packet with everything you need to know. If you’re unsure, just let me know and I’ll send the info to you so you can see what’s involved. Please don’t depend on the same peo-ple over and over, because they may not be there next time. It’s YOUR Solo program – get involved and be a part of it. Thanks, and see you on course! Paul

OKLA Region Is Coming On Strong! by Greg Laws The Solo2 program of the OKLAHOMA REGION could soon be a real powerhouse in the Midwest Divi-sion. Solo Chairman John Ederer and his “Happy Team” of enthusiastic supporters have completely re-vamped their heat system, their registration system, their Solo Safety program and – this is the best part – they’ve locked down access to the vast REMING-TON PARK parking lot for 2003! How vast is it? The actual racing surface measures 1000’ by 340’! The paddock, grid and spectator areas are all nearby but separate from the racing surface, and the entire Solo2 section is actually just a small outlying spare lot for the horse track complex. The remaining lots are 4 or 5 times larger! Remington Park is a major horseracing track located towards the north end of Oklahoma City, across the

street from the OKC Zoo and near the Cowboy Hall of Fame. The main Remington Park stadium building is near the Solo site and provides restaurants, rest-rooms and off-track betting. The lot surface is excel-lent asphalt and there are no light poles or drainage grates to avoid. The site has only mild elevation changes and there is a curb on one side only. It would be an ideal Solo2 Divisional site, something that the club intends to bid on for 2004, and the loca-tion is a scant 2.5 hours from Wichita! The OKLA Solo team is putting the past behind them and concentrating on what amounts to a complete re-birth of their Solo program. They invited Robert Foster and me down for a Saturday noon meeting where we swapped ideas and scarfed down terrific Bar-B-Q (Thanks, John!) before driving out to inspect the Remington Park surface. The team’s excitement was contagious. Everyone left pumped up & eager for the 2003 season to begin! The OKLA Region 2003 Solo2 schedule is available at http://www.okscca.org

ARCTIC SOLO EVENT REPORT By Mike Herrick and Rob Roytas A long time ago at a parking lot far, far, far, far, far away. There were two crazy guys who apparently loved to freeze their ears off. March 9th started out extremely cold. Dave Geis and the rest of the SOLO diehards were there and ready to go when Mike and I arrived on site, along with Chuck McCoy and Brian Meyer the master course designer. These three early arrivals only produced 1 person who actually drove, Chuck McCoy was the only person who actually went out on course, Dave was our safety steward for the day and his wife Lu was the registrar (see photo - right). Brian Meyer is basically the man who is the Boeing liaison, and one of our best course designers. He was very helpful in doing some minor revamp to the course due to snow. Snow, what was this a Scandinavian rally? There was actually snow on the site when we arrived (see photo next page).

Lu Geis “braves the elements” in the Little Red Registrar’s Wagon I just wanted to thank these four early in the article to show that members are truly our best asset in the club and no one is more dedicated than these folks. Others deserv-ing much appreciation from Mike and myself are Tom Re-gen, Brian Jones, Dave “FTD” Gird, and Paula Sherman,

Page 7: Vol. 2003, Issue 3 April 2003 Is Your Heart Racing? · 2007-03-27 · Vol. 2003, Issue 3 April 2003 Is Your Heart Racing? “Road Dog” Rally (Page 5) Arctic Solo Event Report (Page

(Continued from page 6) and anyone who we may not have listed (we’ve slept since then) many, many thanks.

Safety stewards Dave Geis and Rob Foster test a snow bank’s incline. The course was designed with the intent to use as much space as possible without feeling slow or like a zig-zag. To accomplish this, we created a design that re-quired drivers to drive much of the course twice. There was a horsepower-friendly section of the course that was driven twice per run to satisfy those interested in sheer speed, along with several sections that required a good deal of skill to maneuver quickly. The freezing conditions made tires very difficult to warm, but that didn’t stop peo-ple from giving it their all. We can usually use the excuse of colder weather in the early heats to explain our sub-par times, but it seems Dave Gird decided to put the smack down in the third heat with his FTD run of 60.721. Appar-ently his R-compound tires were warm enough to work fairly well. Street tires were working pretty well, too, as John Dolecek brought in a 61.467 second run in his STS Celica.

Not a bad lineup, given the cold weather.

The turnout for the event was a pleasant surprise with 46 entries. Since we were dealing with extremely cold condi-tions, we had only 5 cars in each heat so that workers would only have to be on course for about 20-30 minutes. Ask anyone who worked out there; that was plenty of time!

Paul Sherman (+Pax) waits at the start line. The day lasted a bit longer than we would have liked con-sidering the cold weather, but it was good to have so many entrants and short 5-car heats. And speaking of entrants, we were impressed at the number of newbies who showed up at our event. We want to encourage all of you to attend our next event. If nothing else, it promises to be warmer weather. Once again, we have to thank those who made this event possible. Special thanks again goes out to Dave and Lu Geis and Brian Meyer, who were the first on site to help and did not even compete. Without people like these, our events would not happen. And to everyone else who got out of their warm beds to help with the day (we know who you are), thank you.

Second to last heat on the starting grid.

What’s Indexed Time?

The PAX index is a method of “equalizing” the difference between classes by converting each driver’s best time to its theoretical equivalent, as if each driver had been in an A-Modified vehicle.

CRASH / FIRE / RESCUE SCHOOL REVIEW By Chuck McCoy (and Dave Geis)

On Saturday, March 22nd I attended the Crash, Fire, and Rescue school at Hallett. The weather was perfect. I had a lot of fun and learned a lot. We started out the day by learning the proper way to put out vehicle fires. Everyone got a chance to use the fire extinguisher and actually put out a vehicle on fire. After that we had a class on how to hook up a tow strap on different types of vehicles and the safest way to get them off the track. After we were all fed lunch we had a very informative class on basic first aid that not only will be useful at the track but in everyday life as well. We had sessions on radio communications, hand signals, and flagging. A lot of great information packed into one day. After it was over the SCCA guys were invited to do a lap on the 1.8 mile road course. What a great day! (And from Dave Geis) 46 people attended the Crash/Fire/Rescue school; 30 SCCA people and 16 from Hallett itself. Wichita Region people included Dave & Lu Geis, Bruce Sargent, Bruce Bettinger, Scott Bettinger, Chuck McCoy, Gary Bryant, Marc Akin, George Morrison, Will Huxtable and Andy Timmons. I'd just about bet that all drivers will thank you for your effort to go to the school to help save their butts!

Marc Akin gets his ears, chin, nose and helmet removed!

So the experiment with my new Yokohama A032R tires didn’t turn out so well … apparently size DOES matter! Going from 225 to 235 width tires made a difference as I sliced open one of my brand new $192 tires. It appears that I was making contact with the lower rear portion of my fender well, which just so happens to have a fairly sharp edge. Got another tire and a set of wheel spacers, though. Now I just have to hope I have enough threads left to sufficiently bolt the wheel on. Man, nobody told that this stuff was so technical … GEEZ! Our first Solo of the year went quite very well, despite the weather. I was able to take quite a few pictures also. My goal throughout the season is to take many photos, and incorporate them as much as possible in the Wail

(space permitting, of course). If you have pictures you’d like to share, send ‘em my way, but please include appli-cable captions … cuz if I wasn’t there, I have no idea what I’d be looking at. For the “regulars”, you might notice the results section is quite lengthy. Since I had some space to fill, and since there weren’t too many cars, I decided to include all the “time” results. However, in the future, I’ll more likely list only the top 10-15 finishers in Time/PAX Time. Short and sweet. PEACE!! Tom “I can’t drive 55.”

Volunteer Opportunities - Member Versus Customer By Lu Geis

Do you want to become more involved in your club? Do you have any special skills or talents you feel might benefit the club? Do you have an extra two hours to spare either before or an hour after the Solo events? We always need help in set-up and teardown. If you could come help with set-up you could get that little extra edge over your competition and be great help to the club at the same time. It’s also a great way to learn how to set up a course if you think you might be interested in chair-ing an event some day. And it gives you more time to spend with other people who have an interest in the same things you do. Do you have PR skills?

We need someone who would like to be a contact for places like Wichita On Wheels and the Kansas Auto Enthusiasts Maga-zine (Channel 51) to keep them informed about our upcoming events and inviting them out to our events to keep our name in the media. Do you have time to go places like Automobila, the NASCAR shop, or the car deal-ers and see if we could leave info about the club on display with them? Could you find the time to go to the colleges and see if they have a place we could leave brochures? Would you like to show your car and represent your club at the same time? You could show your car and pass out informa-tion about the club at the same time. What could be better? One of the biggest opportunities our club faces is getting the members to realize that their help is needed. Are you “A Customer Or A Member”?

If you feel there is any way you can help please contact Lu Geis at [email protected] or 942-2212, ext. 234 Tues-Sat 7:30 to 4:30 or 832-0496 evening between 5:00 and 8:00.
