Embrace the Opportunities for Success!District 12 Toastmasters are actively embracing the

opportunities for personal success. In just five months since the term began on July 1, our members have completed over 200 educational awards! This includes 75 new recipients for Competent Communicator (CC), 14 Advanced Communicator Bronze (ACB), 11 Advanced Communicator Silver (ACS), 9 Advanced Communicator Gold (ACG), 39 Competent Leaders (CL), 17 Advanced Leader Bronze (ALB), 15 Advanced Leader Silver (ALS), 6 High Performance Leadership (HPL), and 13 new and well deserving Distinguished Toastmasters (DTM). Thank you everyone for keeping engaged in Toastmasters!

The 2011 Fall Conference was a great success! My sincere Thank You to co-chairs, Linda Kersey, DTM, and Kay Mellen, DTM, and every single member who stepped up to the plate and volunteered to fill so many important roles! Toastmasters International President Michael Notaro was excited to visit with us and presented two brilliant keynote presentations that focused on Toastmasters: Where Leaders Are Made and Achieving Greatness Together.

On Friday night, we enjoyed a live auction with Auctioneer Tom Jameson and Randy and Sandy Amelino. They raised over $2,600 in 20 minutes for the Special Environment Trust Fund with valuable donations from corporate sponsors, businesses and Toastmaster members. Bill Cortus also presented a check to District 12 from Thrivent Financial for an additional $1,600—matched funds for donations in 2010-11. The Evaluation contest started the evening with a touching speech by Cesar Castillo, member of a Special Environment Club. The masterful contestants that graced the stage were Candace Cantu-McGloin, Richard Snyder, third place Deena Benjamin, second place Susan Myers and first place Bobby Harris.

The Hall of Fame luncheon was set in a delightful mood by musicians Morris Anderson and Anjelina Lopez-Rosende. Special recognition was given to all members who passed significant milestones in their Toastmasters journey. The DTM hugline was “extra” special as President Notaro presented the newly branded DTM medallion to our newest Distinguished Toastmasters, and Don Ensch, the “Voice of Toastmasters” announced their names one by one. It was like being at the International Convention! Mr. Ensch also gave an inspiring educational entitled “Stay With It! Never Quit!” You can view all the photos of this exciting conference on the District website: www.tmdistrict12.org.

The Humorous Speech contest was very entertaining and a great way to end a fantastic conference. We laughed all the way home after seeing these masterful contestants on stage: Ron Shockey, Brenda Premo, third place Bill Stafford, second place Manuel Urrizola, and first place Carolyn Cihak.

We want to see all of you at our Spring Conference on Saturday, May 12, at the Doral Desert Princess Resort in Palm Springs! A fun activity is also planned on Friday evening as an optional pre-conference event, and many of you will want to spend the night at this beautiful resort. Clear your calendars now for May 12th!! Complete details will be available at Toastmasters Leadership Institute (TLI) on Jan. 21, at California Baptist University in Riverside.

Speaking of TLI, tell everyone to join you at another spectacular training event for club officers and members! Our TLI co-chairs, Angie Nett, Randy Powell and Esther Phahla, have put together a variety of workshops and two outstanding guest speakers, Robert Mackenzie and Craig Duswalt, so you can embrace even more opportunities for success. Full details are included in this newsletter and on our District website. Register now and network with hundreds of Toastmasters and future Toastmasters who are eager to learn and grow.

As you know, the January TLI is mid-year training for club officers. These workshops are geared to combine an overview of what you have accomplished the first six months and advance your skills to be Distinguished or better over the last six months of your term. There is always something new to learn at each TLI event. By attending both TLIs (summer and winter), your clubs will finish Goal 9 in the Distinguished Club Program (DCP), one of the most important goals the elected officers can do for their clubs. Remember to bring your officers manuals!!

Every member invests in their own success as well as their club’s success. Clubs that achieve any 5 of the 10 DCP goals by Dec. 31 are eligible to receive $25 worth of educational materials. More incentives will be promoted at TLI. This truly is a fantastic time to be a Toastmaster!

Happy Holidays to you and your families.Roz

As we enter 2012, we have many new clubs in the pipeline almost ready to charter. International President Michael Notaro joined District Governor Arlene Blas, DTM; PRO Kent Peterson, DTM and me as we toured the Inland Empire touting the benefits of Toastmasters to potential new clubs. Special thanks to Brenda Premo, DTM; PDG Bill Cortus, DTM and PID Richard Snyder, DTM for their assistance in setting up the meetings with future corporate sponsors.

We are always looking for the opportunity to start new clubs and bring Toastmasters to even more members. Be the key person who helps start a new

club and District 12 will give you free admission to the Spring Conference. Details will be available soon.

Thank you to our coaches listed below. Please contact me if you are interested in being a coach, there are many clubs from which to choose. Make a difference to our members, our clubs and the District and work on your DTM status all at the same time.

Division A news by Marjorie Benesh, DTM

Dispatch From Division ASeason’s Greetings!Leigh Adams and I continue to be very proud

of our leaders and members in the Division. All but one of our clubs had their October dues in on time. All of our Area Governors completed their first round of Area Governor Visits.

Congratulations to Clement Liu, Area A5 Governor, and Assistant Glenn Miya for being the first to have all Area Governor visits submitted. Also, all of our Area Governors are on track to become Distinguished or better Area Governors. Congratulations again to Area A5 Clement Liu and Glenn Miya for having completed three goals and chartered one new club. Your strong leadership and teamwork skills are evident and your stellar Area Governor Reports are “a model for all area governors.” Congratulations to Lorraine Abate, Area A3 Governor and Assistant Shaun Hade for having completed four goals. Congratulations to Area A2 Ryan Geluz, and Area A4 Theresa Rosenveldt and Assistant Larry Ruotolo for having completed 2 goals. Congratulations to Area A1 Tracie Wilfred and Assistant Vincent Wilfred for chartering a new club to bring the number of clubs in your area to eight!

Congratulations also go out to our new DTMs Leigh Adams and Linda Kersey, and to Sayeed Shaikh and Lois Sicking for earning another DTM.

Division A continues to follow up with new club leads. The District gets more points by opening new clubs than any other statistic for its ranking with Toastmasters International. We can continue opening new clubs with every member looking for organizations with 250 or more employees and providing contact names to your Area, Division and District leaders.

We welcomed many members and some “first timers” to District 12 Fall Conference in Ontario to meet Toastmasters International President Michael Notaro. We heard outstanding humorous speeches, evaluations, and educational presentations. Thank you Conference Co-chairs Linda Kersey and Kay Mellen. Thank you everyone for helping to make the Conference a success.

Toastmasters’ vision empowers people to achieve their full potential and realize their dreams. By improving our own communication and leadership skills, we can help ourselves and influence others to find the courage to change!

News from Division B by Governor Mary Saxon Hobbs, ACB

Open house helps build strong clubOpen house holds the key to building strong

Toastmaster Clubs:—Staged to create a visible presence within the

community.—Staged to recognize deserving individuals. —Staged to bring clubs together for leadership and

learning experience.—Staged to increase clubs’ membership.

An open house can create a strong visible presence within the community. What better way to make this happen than to plan an open house for this purpose. Recently, Club 4202 presented “The Distinguished Citizen Award” to George Bower, principal of the Bob Murphy Community Day School. Club 4202 is also coaching and mentoring the Vernon Bragg Youth Leadership which is held in the Day School.

The guest speaker was Dr. Margaret Hill, author and autobiography of “It’s all About the Children.” Dr. Hill is the newly elected officer of the San Bernardino School Board. Her message expressed the need to continue education for our youth in Coaching and Mentoring. The Vernon Bragg Jr. Rialto Toastmasters Club is doing a fine job to make this happen. Visitors were inspired by this club.

Caltrans Communicator Toastmaster Club 1124 has a strong presence in downtown San Bernardino. It keeps club members and the community informed of changes coming to the city. “Changes coming to the City of San Bernardino,” featured special guest speaker, Casey Dailey, assistant to the mayor of San Bernardino. This staged event drew a large group. Visitors learned how transportation will service us better within the city and neighboring communities. They also had an opportunity to see the value of Toastmasters.

Stage an open house to recognize members for outstanding service. Club 7188—District Pacesetters

Club—will honor and recognize two Division B officers for outstanding service. A Distinguished Award will be presented to Harminder Gill, B 4 Area Governor. Harminder is an avid area governor. He made area visits to his clubs to encourage them to become Distinguished. Harminder is also a recent graduate of the Eleanor Jean Grier Leadership Academy’s graduate program.

Jerry Weitzman, DTM, will be honored for his contribution to Division B and District 12 Toastmasters. Jerry empowers us with much needed update District Performance Reports. If you need information regarding your division, area and club’ performance Toastmasters International will coach you through the process. However, Jerry Weitzman keeps an eye on the District’ Performance Reports.

Staging an open house is a sure way highlight the talent of your Area Governors. Club 909, Stand On Your Feet, provides an opportunity for Area Governors to present educational workshops. Katrina Smith, B 1 Area Governor, illustrated “Easy Speak,” a new club scheduling program that empowers club members to be pro-active on the agenda. Also they are able to see the number of speeches, and manual they are working from. Much enthusiasm was shown for its use.

In the coming months, Division B Governor and Area Governors will focus on: —Inspiring the Area Governors to look within for

future leaders—Retaining and growing weak clubs—Starting New Clubs —International Contest

Thoughts from Division C by Governor Esther Phahla, ACS, ALS

Communicate and Lead with ConfidenceHello Fellow

Toastmasters. Can you believe half of the year has gone by? Here are some of the activities that took place in Division C: On Nov. 5, High Definition Speakers (Club 1287753)

organized a march for Toastmasters in the Perris Veteran’s day parade. We had fun carrying our Toastmasters banners and passing flyers spreading the word about Toastmasters.

On Nov. 14, Division C also hosted Circle of Champions (Club 1365837) to come and train us on Advanced Evaluations, called Black Belt Evaluations. Trust me if you know what it means to be a black belt, they really mean it. We gained valuable skills from that training.

Congratulations to the following Clubs for earning the Crazy 8 challenge by adding eight or more new members from July 1-Sept. 30:

Club 130 Prime Time (9)Club 1677 Temecula Toastmasters (11)

Club 6972 Learn and Dine (8)

Some of our clubs are closer to reaching the Education Incentives of $25 by achieving five goals before Dec. 31. There is still time we can do it!

With the new year approaching I would like to encourage everyone to join us at the Toastmasters Leadership Institute on Jan. 21 to attend mid-year officer training and learn or refresh some of the officer skills and attend other workshops to further your communication and leadership skills.

Remember, the Area Governors are here to assist you with any questions regarding reaching your club goals. When members succeed, the club succeeds. When the club succeeds, the area succeeds. When the area succeeds, the division succeeds. When the division succeeds, the district succeeds. Thank you for your continued membership.

We are still working on two new clubs to grow Division C. We all did very well for the first half of the year and I believe we can continue to do well for the remainder of year by working on our CCs and ACs to reach our educational goals.

As always the Division C Team is only a phone call or email away.

Discover yourself at Dist. 12 leadership breakfast Feb. 25By Paul Clark, DTM, PDG

Leadership and public speaking go together. Some time ago I read one of our founder’s articles on leadership, published in the little book, Personally Speaking. “Speechmaking is not an end,” Dr. Ralph Smedley said, “but merely one step, and a very important one, in the direction of preparing for service and leadership.” Toastmasters provide all of us with an educational opportunity to build not only our speaking and communication skills, but also to strengthen our leadership abilities. Every time you are asked to perform a role at a club meeting, such as General Evaluator, or assume a club office, you provide service but also gain the opportunity to be a better leader. To highlight this concept, District 12 is hosting a “Leadership Breakfast” on Saturday morning, Feb. 25.

This free event is open to all Toastmasters interested in discovering more about what they may

gain through leadership roles at the club and district levels. You are invited to hear Past International President Alfred Herzing, DTM, speak about his leadership journey and how important Toastmasters can be to promoting good leaders. Breakouts for small group mentoring by Past District Governors will highlight the event with all getting a chance to listen and respond to their experience. In addition, all will enjoy a full breakfast with networking and friendship opportunities.

Come to the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center, 400 North Pepper Avenue in Colton, off the I-10 freeway. This event will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude by 11 a.m. Place this on your calendar now. Look for more information when you attend Toastmaster Leadership Institute and other coming District events. Call Paul Clark, DTM, PDG, at (760) 360-9533 for additional information or questions.

News from Division D by Governor Mike Saifie

Happy Holidays! It is that time of the year again. Yes, it’s time for

I want us to enjoy several of these activities. I’d also like to make them convenient for Toastmasters throughout District 12. My theme is “Have Fun, Will Travel!”

Websites, social media, Chuck Weck Award, publicity....Help!

Since the last Image came out I have had the opportunity to really see some great publicity in action around District 12. Clubs from different divisions marching together in parades with their club banners, Youth programs starting up, ideas being shared with other districts, more members visiting other clubs, specialty clubs taking their shows on the road, speakers bureau energizing visitors and speakers, clubs asking how they can do better PR and viewing a tremendous awards program recognizing those people achieving higher and higher goals in Toastmasters.

What does this have to do with websites, social media, Chuck Weck Award and publicity-everything. Every time we are out in the public we are advertising ourselves and the Toastmaster brand. We are showing the world that we are active participants in what is going on and, yes, we show them “Toastmasters: Where Leaders Are Made”.

At the Toastmasters Leadership Institute in January we will have sessions on social media, websites and PR. We will open the door to many people on how we can promote ourselves better. I recently visited all the websites in the district and only 5 percent of the clubs (that had websites) were up to date. About one fourth of our clubs do not have websites. Think about going to the news stand and getting today’s paper and they only have papers from two years ago. That is the same thing as us not updating our websites and keeping them current. We have some very talented people in District 12 and some of the websites demonstrate this talent. At TLI we will look at some of the websites that are doing a good job of promoting themselves and Toastmasters.

As an organization we have a great opportunity to get our name out there with the use of social

media. Social media is a powerful tool that is easy to use and gets the word out fast and also can get immediate feedback.

How does your club get information out to the public? Do you have articles printed in the local paper? Maybe you had an article with a picture. Maybe you set up a Speech Craft. Maybe you use Facebook, update your website or have a working booth at a community fair. All of these events and many more are part of the Chuck Weck Award which recognizes the club in our district that puts forth the best PR campaign from July first thru March 31 every Toastmaster year. About six clubs have talked with me about this and that is 64 clubs less than I was hoping for. Let’s get behind publicizing Toastmasters and our clubs. Need ideas? Let’s talk. Have ideas? Let’s talk.

Public Relations goes hand in hand with membership and promoting Toastmasters. Just think about doing a little article for that next new member of yours and putting a picture of your new member on the website. Not only are you recognizing the new member you are promoting the club, promoting Toastmasters and are adding points towards the Chuck Weck Award.

Need to know more about the Chuck Weck Award? Check out the District 12 website http://www.tmdistrict12.org/ , click on the About Us tab and then click on the 2011-2012 Chuck Weck Publicity Award. Want to talk about PR or Chuck Weck? I happen to know just the right person to talk to and you can reach me at [email protected] or 909-705-9800.

Keynote Speaker: Robert MacKenzie, DTM 2nd Place 2010 World Champion of Public Speaking "Terror To Triumph: How to Own The Stage" “CC, CL and Beyond” Twelve years ago, Robert was diagnosed with incurable heart disease. After initially withdrawing from life and giving up on his future, Robert turned his loss into a win. He became a highly successful Architect and Developer whose company oversaw the design, construction and sales of more than $50 million in real estate. Drawing upon 30 years Robert has spent as an actor and his five years as a Toastmaster, Robert’s heartfelt and humorous talks empower audiences to recognize that they already have all they need to lead successful lives. Overcoming loss, adversity and crisis are topics that Robert has lived with and his unique perspective will provide listeners with a guide to deal with those issues in their own lives. In addition, Robert’s skills as a public speaker have resulted in his competing in the World Championship of Public Speaking Contest in 2008 and, again, in 2010, where he was awarded second place. These skills have provided him with effective tools in coaching speakers-in-training. Robert’s masterful understanding of stage technique, physical awareness and vocal ability offers specific tips and tools to embolden both the fledging speaker and seasoned veteran to unleash one’s unique potential to effectively communicate.
