The story identifies different human emotions andsituations experienced by the little boy named Carlos PrincipeIV: sadness vs. happiness, wealth vs. poverty, isolation vs.company, arrogance vs. humiliation, etc. The Little Prince, ashe is fondly called, was born with a golden spoon because hewas fortunate to have rich parents. His experiences are limitedto his lavish surroundings and his feelings are solely basedon contentment.

His apathetic attitudes endedwhen he was one daytransformed intoa poor

boy. He experienced to be nobody, dirty, neglected, homeless, ignored, and orphaned. Helpless over his plight, he graduallybegan to see things quite clearly; to be a person is not justpleasing oneself but to be responsible for others, too!

The author brings into the consciousness of thereaders the situation in the Philippine society; the majority ofthe rich people who seemed to have a world of their own, mindless of the poor. The greater majority of the Filipinos arepoor, subsisting below the poverty line, deprived of socialservices and human rights due to them. The Little Prince, asrepresentative of the rich people, echoes its apathy to thereality of the present times, the numerous childrenroaming the streets exposed to the unhealthful conditionsdetrimental to their young bodies and exposed to thedangers of lurking immoralities.

The Little Prince experienced the twist of fatesimilar to popular teleserye, “Gulong ng Palad,” becausefrom a privileged lad, he became underprivileged;yet this led him to immersing himself into thecondition of the poor. The unexpectedhappening broadened his view of hissurroundings and understanding of people. Itfacilitated redirection of his values, clarified hischoices and verified his options. What the LittlePrince has undergone is a rare opportunityfor an individual at an earliest stage seemedto be guided in processing his experience.Indeed, “one sees clearly only with the heart,”unless one undergoes an experience, hisunderstanding of life remains limited.Experience teaches the minds andmoves the hearts toward noble action.[Angelo Pio]

Metro Manila Film Festival winner “Kasal Kasali Kasalo”is clearly a Filipino romantic comedy film. The directorastonishingly builds up high caliber story which unravels thetruth that marriage life isn’t a “happily ever after.” Most of thescenes portrayed by each character in this film wereauthentically patterned after a real-life situation. It is aneye-opener film showing the adage that in a Filipino society, one does not marry a beloved partner. One marries a family.

Possessing all the elements, this film won an award asBest Picture of the festival plus Cultural Awards as ithighlights family values as well as the real complexities oftoday’s marital relationship. The execution (cinematography, direction, editing, etc.) is much better.

On a strictly entertainment level, the film even higherincludes realistic dialogues and a lifelike scenario presented ina riotous-dramatic way.

What elevates this latest Jose Reyes film even higherare the spectacular performances of the cast: Judy Ann Santos(unbeatable in the festival’s Best Actress competition); RyanAgoncillo, a natural actor and a welcome new charismaticleading man with great on-screen chemistry with real-lifefiancée (Santos); Gina Pareño (festival best supporting actressshoo-in); Ariel Ureta; Gloria Diaz; and Tuesday Vargas.

Soliman Cruz, father of Judy Ann, whose role is veryshort yet so powerful, turns the movie into a real-as-lifeshowcase of an uncivilized but alluring promdi(provincial), a typical Pinoy father. The scene, during the“pamanhikan,” traditional way of giving a courtesy call tothe girl’s parents to ask them for her hand in marriage, perfectly depict the real paternal image. Over dinner, conflict begun when the resident patriarch confidentlyasks the visiting mom the no-no question.

Gloria Diaz, former Filipina Miss Universe-turned-Urian-winning actress effectively executes herscenes as a source of conflicts for the couple. Andnow, in Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo, she is a seasonedcomedienne who doesn’t try hard but iseffective in her scenes. On the other hand, GinaPareño brings the character of the fishwifemother, also comedic, and an inherent crowd-pleaser to life. In fact the storyline centers onthe rivalry between two families tiedtogether with the vows of marriage. Asthey bomb to each other, their absolutedifferences will provide rockiness in thelife of the newly-wed young lovers.

77777June - July 2011 http://www.dlsud.edu.ph/library

Juliana Palermo is a sexy and pretty woman whocommits an emotional affair with Ryan Agoncillo. Hersecondary character, particularly in her confrontation scene withthe combative Judy Ann, also brought great comedic relief tothe film. Her romantic distraction with the couple’s otherwiseblissful union adds solid emotion to each scene.

The film successfully delivers that marriage is one ofthe most important Christian Sacraments. Thus, it directlyimplied that young lovers should consider their emotional, financial, spiritual and physical stability before entering into aserious relationship. [Eden Fabella]

St. John Baptist de La Salle had begun a greatenterprise when he started to teach underprivileged children inFrance. His work was continued by the Brothers of theChristian Schools in the whole world by touching the heartsand teaching the minds of children. In Dasmariñas City, Cavite,Br. Andrew Gonzales FSC saw the beginning of a great Lasallianinstitution in Region IV where students from all over Cavite,Laguna, Batangas, and Quezon will converge for a singlepurpose of partaking St. La Salle’s great legacy – Christianeducation.

Since 1987 to 2011, the De La Salle Brothers, underthe leadership of the different presidents, have toiled withoutceasing and have gradually shaped what De La SalleUniversity-Dasmariñas is today. The university reaped variousachievements in all categories – CHED deregulation, PAASCUaccreditation, awards from the government and othernon-governmental units, high passing rates in boardexaminations, etc.
