VOL. 26, # 3 & 4 Dedicated to Hank Spaulding NOVEMBER & DECEMBER 2015 The holidays are coming and with them all of the festivities and traditions we have come to love: the feast on Thanksgiving, the trek to the Christmas tree farm, the ball dropping in Times Square to close the year. The Center has holiday traditions as well. We look forward to the turkey dinner served here in November, followed by a concert at the Nonantum the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Then we gather to craft holiday greens for the home: hand decorated swags and wreaths, boxwood trees and more to be sold at our Prelude Christmas Fair. Our wreaths will be ready early this year so be sure to get one right after Thanksgiving! We also have Elder Elves who fan out and collect thoughtful gifts to be put in holiday bags that are delivered to seniors who have no one to celebrate the holidays with. Many of you enjoy these traditions with us. Feel free to join us if you haven’t in the past. Enjoy the season and all we have to be grateful for. Finally, don’t forget the 25 th Anniversary of the Center is December 1 st . The drawing for the Cash Raffle is that day so get your tickets soon!

NOVEMBER & DECEMBER

2015

The holidays are coming and with them all of the festivities and

traditions we have come to love: the feast on Thanksgiving, the trek to the

Christmas tree farm, the ball dropping in Times Square to close the year.

The Center has holiday traditions as well. We look forward to the

turkey dinner served here in November, followed by a concert at the

Nonantum the Sunday after Thanksgiving. Then we gather to craft holiday

greens for the home: hand decorated swags and wreaths, boxwood trees and

more to be sold at our Prelude Christmas Fair. Our wreaths will be ready

early this year so be sure to get one right after Thanksgiving! We also have

Elder Elves who fan out and collect thoughtful gifts to be put in holiday

bags that are delivered to seniors who have no one to celebrate the holidays

with. Many of you enjoy these traditions with us. Feel free to join us if you

haven’t in the past. Enjoy the season and all we have to be grateful for.

Finally, don’t forget the 25th Anniversary of the Center is December 1st.

The drawing for the Cash Raffle is that day so get your tickets soon!

VIVA V♥LUNTEERS

The Coastal Kitchen Tour Saturday, October 10th was a great success! Members and non-members alike volunteered and helped us welcome hundreds of guests. We had dozens of docents for tour homes, several gals helping with ticket sales at the Center, and designers in the homes. Many thanks to those who make this a one-of-a-kind event that has become a tradition for many of our guests: Gail Arnold and her friend Sheila, Louise Hurlbutt, Dina Lennon, Paulette Burbank, Sue Ellen Muse, Sue Veit, Sharon Colburn, Joanne Jacobs, Ginny Hammer, Jeff Pettit, Bette Briggs, Margaret Frost and her daughter, Marcia Wye, Peg Brewitt, Maureen McKenzie, Diane Thayer, Linda Perreault and her daughter, Nancy Geyerhahn and her daughter, Joyce Pyne, Janet Kupferschmid, Peggy Kingsley, Edie Lamberts, Patti Graham, Barbara Duffy, Gail Hackett Clarke, Sandy Janes, June Barrier, Bev Meserve, Kathy King, Amanda Batson, Cathy Lunde, Debra Hackett and Amy Bruckner. Thank you all for your commitment to this fundraiser and to the Center! Our next volunteer effort is a labor of love dedicated to reaching senior citizens who have no one to spend the holidays with. If you would like to donate or volunteer for our Elder Elves program let me know. Our first meeting is Wednesday 10/21 at 10 am. We assemble about 50 bags each year, filling them with handmade scarves, hats or mittens, Hannaford food cards, and other thoughtful gifts. Thank you notes from the recipients reveal the bags are a treat they enjoy all day long on Christmas. Please help us bring them some cheer – donate your time, your crafts or a cash donation to cover gift expenses. Thank you! If you’re feeling crafty, we will also be looking for volunteers to help with holiday fair preparations, decorating greens and working the fair December 5. Stop by and see me if you’re interested. NEWS from Susan …

My goodness! I cannot believe it will be Thanksgiving and Christmas before we know it. Seems like we were just getting ready for the holidays – preparing and sharing with loved ones, but that was a year ago now. Everyone tells me, and now I can attest to the fact that the older you get, the more quickly time goes by. That’s why we need to live every day to the fullest. As a reminder, in January The Newsletter will be published on-line and there will be two ways for you to receive it. For anyone who has given us their email address, you will receive it via that route. If you have not given us your email, you will be able to download it from our website: www.seniorcenterkennebunk.org. If you do not have an email account, please call us. As you can imagine, the cost of printing and mailing is one of the reasons we are doing this. Also, it is the way of the future as we see so many other non-profits using technology to deliver the news. Also, we will resume publishing the newsletter on a monthly basis instead of every other month. We have so much going on in the next two months! On November 12th Southern Maine Health Care will be bringing us a delicious turkey dinner with all the trimmings. This is a hugely popular event, for up to 50 people, by reservation only. We are so grateful that the hospital is doing this again in 2015. Stop by the Center or mail us a check for $8 per person. You will be so glad that you did. Ooooo, I can almost taste it now! This will give you a chance to share a delightful meal with friends and stretch out your belly before the BIG day. Practice! Practice! Practice! It’s time to order our wreaths from the Center – all with beautiful bows hand-tied by Dolly Choquette. Stop by the Center to see the ribbon selections available for 2015. We will also be having our annual holiday concert on the Sunday after Thanksgiving at The Nonantum. This year the entertainment will be by a local group – The Windmills. This is our Christmas gift to all of our members. The concert is FREE to members and others pay $5. Even though you don’t have to pay a fee, you will need a ticket so we can keep track of the numbers to ensure we will have adequate seating and refreshments. Stop by and get yours today. through our warm up, and utilize that breath as we

move gently through a series of postures. We will

finish with a final relaxation that will make you feel

as if you need a designated driver. We will be doing

standing as well as seated postures on the mat. If you

are already familiar with yoga and rely on props then

into your practice. Everyone should bring a yoga mat,

FYI

Medicare’s Open Enrollment period is

October 15 - December 7

October 15 through December 7, 2015 –

Open Enrollment Period for Medicare Advantage

Plans (Part C) and Prescription Drug Coverage Plans

(Part D). During this time you are able to join a

Medicare Part C or D plan for 2016. Your plan will

take effect on January 1, 2016. If you already have a

Medicare plan, this is the time to re-evaluate your

health care needs and compare them to your current

plan benefits. It is advisable to compare your current

rates and coverage to other Medicare plan options on

the market, so you can make an informed decision

whether it is better to keep your current plan, or

change your coverage. If you decide to stay with your

current plan there is no further action required to

renew it. If you do not make any changes or don’t

enroll in a new plan during this period, you can’t do

any changes to your coverage before October the

following year. Visit www.medicare.gov to get

detailed and current information about your Medicare

eligibility and enrollment options, or call 1-800-

We’ve placed a receptacle in the lobby of the

Senior Center for non-perishable items to be donated

to the local food pantry. We’ll collect items during

November and December.

The Elder Elves have gathered and are

busy with their list-making and gift

selection and wrapping. It’s not too late to

join their “workshop”. If you are unable to

participate in Elder Elves, monetary

donations help to sustain the program and also books

of stamps are greatly appreciated. The next meeting
