OPENING COMMENTS:

Joe Dion, vice president, opened tonight’s meeting. He introduced our guest, Mike Kelly. He announced that there would be no workshop this month.

Helen Fitzgerald extended condolences to Jim Wheeler on the death of his mother-in-law. A card was sent on behalf of the guild.

NEW BUSINESS:

Helen Fitzgerald gave an update on Info to Ramble Vendors, which had already been emailed to the membership. Specifically, the 5 square feet of display space, on either tables or shelves was emphasized as was the kind of items. The Carvers will be joining us again this year. It was also mentioned that the placement committee, particularly the president, had final say on items’ appropriateness and quantity. We do not want to discourage novices from selling their items and will give advice to pricing, if asked. - Labels on all items for sale and

corresponding log is very important to be done in advance. Oiled items lose labels and need to be attached accordingly.

- Set up will be at about 1:00 on

Thursday, November 6 with a Pizza lunch at 12:00 near the Garden House.

- Logs are needed to weigh down

shelves. They are also an asset to show visitors the before and after.

- David Golzbein and Joe Self will be

providing auction donations.

- Please bring wood to turn.

Joe Dion announced he will not be returning as vice president. Dave Piper will remain, if accepted, as president as will

Helen Fitzgerald as secretary. We had no volunteers for the open position.

Kyle Saxon donated the following to the Guild, which auctioned at the meeting: - Lathe extension for the new Delta

variable speed 1 Hp. Model Lathe to Paul Penney for $20.

- Delta Wet/dry Bench Grinder to Mary Ann for $50.

- Oneway Wolverine Diamond Dressing Jig to David Freundlich for $16.

The demonstration handout with directions and sketches, will be in the archives on our website. Dave indicated that he is working on assembling all of the handouts from previous demonstrations held at the Guild. He would like to have them on the Guilds website. When he completes this project, the members and board will determine how best to make the material available to the members. . Waldo Collins spoke of the problem at the workshop last month. Unattended toddlers got into a mosquito product. It is important to inform future attendees to leave young children at home. Children from age 10 who are interested in turning, are welcome, accompanied by a parent. This situation was very upsetting, especially considering the generosity of Waldo and Jean to offer their home workshop for our use.

OCTOBER FINANCIAL REPORT:

Gary Venema reported that our balance was $3705.79 minus a $106.96 check to Williie for website expenses.

OCTOBER·V DEMO: David Freundlich – Pin Chuck

The handout with directions and sketches and various demonstration pieces were passed around during the presentation. The handout was emailed to the members later that week.

Pin chucks work better in side grain dry wood. A tailstock should be used when possible for safety.

For bottle stoppers a 3/8 X 4” #5 bolt was used, for chain pulls a ¼ x 4” #5 bolt. David prefers to use a 5 minute or 30 minute epoxy to put the stopper together. He also says to make several pins out of 6 penny nails. A magnet should be used to hold the finished pins unless you want to spend time looking for a pin in the sawdust and shavings.

The third item he discussed making was a thread cutter. Grind three groves equal distance around a 3/8-16 bolt. Fasten the bolt in a vise to hold it steady while grinding the groves. Add two nuts to be used to clean the threads between every cut. First drill a hole to the desired depth then use the thread cutter to make a small cut in the wood, back out, clean the threads then cut again.
