Hi from Nat’l. Chevy, We just returned from Iola a few days ago. We had a nice trip, the weather was much nicer than usual with cooler temps and a nice breeze. Usually it is very hot and humid, so it made the day a lot nicer. I enjoyed visiting with our old vending neighbors, seeing some of our members and visiting with them. I’m making a short list of used parts needed for some of them. Paul had a few hours to shop, found some good parts and enjoyed seeing friends also. We headed to the Wisconsin Dells Friday night for some R & R. We planned on some mini golf and going to the races on Saturday, but the weather was bad so we mostly ate and relaxed. I hope you have all received your new catalog. If you are reading this and have not gotten one, please call and we’ll be happy to send one out. We’ve been keeping busy working on some V-8 stuff and it will be ready to start selling soon. I’m not sure what it all is as the guys have been working on it, but I’ll learn soon. Thanks to all who have been sending the great newsletter articles. I hope more of you can do the same. ‘Til next time.....keep cruisin’

Now Showing __________________________Hello Folks,

I just wanted to tell you that your newsletter is just great. I found your company looking for parts for 1949 Chevy Coupe, and found all I needed, plus. In your newsletter you have asked for articles and photos. When I found my car it was all original, 216 cu. in. engine, three on the tree, a real “Plain Jane.” I’ve owned the car for 17 years and each year I’ve tried to change a few things. About 12 years ago I replaced the engine with a 350 engine and transmission. It has a Hurst floor shifter now also. Also a Buick interior with a ‘78 Camaro subframe with a ‘77 Nova rear end. The front clip has a ‘53 Chevy grill with ‘57 Chevy center bar, with Harley Davidson lights

behind the grill. The hood has ‘53 Buick portholes in it that work. The headlights are also frenched in. Now the rearend has ‘59 Caddy taillights frenched on, the deck lid handler are removed as well on the doors. The quarter panel has 4 lights frenched in for stop, brake & turn lights. There is also flame throwers – at night she really lights up nicely. My wife, Mitzi, likes driving the “Road Rat.” We go to car shows when we can, and just to cruise. I sure am glad that I took the time to look your business up. Thanks again for your help.

Now Showing ____________________________ Sending a couple photo’s of the Custom Royal (taupe) I recently purchased from you and installed. My first ever attempt of this kind of project. I won’t say it was “pegging out” my fun meter, but if I can do it- most anyone can. You are correct when you say it takes time, and patience. The instructions you sent helped a lot, but I had to decide which step needed to be completed first. To ease into the job and see if I wanted to try all of it, I covered the armrests first, then put the trim on the door panels. So far, nothing ruined or screwed up. Decided first job was the windlace, and that required spreading the channels of the kick panel trim as there was no way the windlace would ever slide into it. They had been cleaned and wirebrushed to a good sheen. Even tried some “slickum”. Anyway, they got installed. Next was the headliner. In before package shelf, since headliner has to be fastened down in lower aft corners. I must stress its important to note all screw holes for metal trim and mark with tape etc. as some will be covered up. I made a headliner installation tool using a wide putty knife for sheetrock mud. I attached the bows--one in front of interior light first as it has tabs; tacked the front (centered), then began to simultaneously

work the sides, tightening toward the rear. I found it easier to kind of work out wrinkles as I went. Do NOT be in any hurry to cut excess. A steamer is almost a must have. (cheap at Wal-Mart) A multi sized pack of plastic clamps is worth buying just to temporarily hold things during trial fits all during the job. Don’t wait until you are finished to install the sunvisors in case you made the corners too tight. Package shelf next, rear side panels, and do window trims, being careful to trim away excess material only as much as needed not to show. I was unsure about the assist straps, but found a ladies web belt at Goodwill in a color that matched ok. Be sure and check the door panel nails position in relation to slots in door metal. I had some at the front that were different. Go ahead and trim out the fuzzy pad material where armrest attach screws go thru (will twist up a wad if you don’t) and take a mental picture of angle and fit before attempting to install armrest. During all this using the cardboard the new interior was shipped in on the floorboard makes a better work surface. Clean floor well and use shop vac before glueing the new padding and carpet. Take time to check fit first before glue as carpet must be centered as well as meet up in joints front

Will send more. when it dries out, will lay out old pieces and photo to show difference.

________________________________Now Showingto rear. Installing the new seat covering is easier with a table you can walk around. Takes many more hogrings than came with kit. I used the common cheap pliers, but a good set of angled ones may have been easier to handle. Important----align seams of bottoms with backs and make reference marks before fastening it all onto frames. I managed to get almost all wrinkles out---maybe talk to a shop for tips on that. Bottom line---I’m satisfied---car looks (and smells) a lot better. You have my permission to print any of this to include in newsletter, or send out with kits. I may have left out a few things, but maybe will help someone else. I’ll not be opening an upholstery shop anytime soon though. ha ha

New door handles. Window was ok. Some yoyo used JB Weld on the old one (probably was stripped of teeth) and I couldn’t get it off using a big pickle fork and hammer.

Had to get new sill plates – old ones just looked too bad to put back in with the new stuff.

__________________________________Cover CarHi to my friends at National Chevy,

Attached are some pictures of my 1954 Bel-Air which I purchased in April of 2013 through Ebay. The car was located in Colorado and by all accounts appeared to be in decent mechanical shape. I asked the previous owner if he thought it would make the drive back to my home state of Oregon. He thought it would so I flew out to Denver and started the long drive west via Utah, Nevada and California. It was a great three day road trip that went without any complications. I continued to drive ‘Bella” throughout that first summer but couldn’t wait to tear her down and fix her up right. Come October 2013 I stripped ‘Bella’ down and did a body on restoration. I stored the front clip and hood along with the interior seats, panels and doors upstairs in my bonus room… fortunately I have a very understanding wife! I stripped off all the undercoating underneath by hand and with the help of a friend cut out the minor rust that it had developed over the years. I then welded in new metal for additional support and strength. The drivers’ door had major rust so it had to be re-metaled from the mid-point on down. I then undercoated the frame, undercarriage and all the interior panels after first applying a coat of rust proofing. With the engine pulled from the compartment I had the opportunity to repaint the engine and replaced the valve cover, restoring it to its ‘blue flame’ glory. I also noticed that someone had rattle can painted the engine compartment, electrical wires as well as the trunk. ‘Bella’ had

a decent exterior paint job but it didn’t include the door jams, dash, fuel door interior or trunk. I sanded down all of these areas and after a computer match of the exterior paint I was able to clean up and detail these areas as well. I also repainted all of the small parts like the heater, hinges, vents as well as the hundreds of little parts to get everything back to looking like its original

1954 version. I replaced the carpet, all the window glass and re-chromed the window trim. What a job to reassemble the vent windows and to re-align the doors! Whoever bought her originally had her built with the upgraded options to include power steering, power brakes and an automatic transmission. Everything but the oil filter that I was eventually able to locate… an original 54 Fram, which I then restored and installed. The power glide transmission was replaced with a turbo 350 and I added a dual master cylinder for the brakes for safety reasons. My main goal was to make ‘Bella’ look like she did back when she rolled off the show room floor in 1954. I worked on her every day from 4am until 8am, resuming after my paying job and working late into the evenings. In May of 2014 she was ready to roll. ‘Bella’ is truly just a dream to drive and in fact has become a daily driver for me, super solid and dependable. She is a now a fully restored version of a beautiful car from a beautiful era! Thanks to the people at National Chevy for all the help, tons of parts and for making my Bel-Air dream come true!

Sincerely,Dan McGuire

Now Showing ____________________________ I am sending you pictures of what I call my “53 1/2” that’s because it’s a 1953 210 from the firewall forward and a 1954 Belair from there back. It’s on a Monte Carlo chassis with a 355 TPI and 700 R4 transmission. I chopped the roof 1 1/2” and the hood 3 1/2.” It has 1955 Chevy head lights and fins on the back that I made with 1962 Chevy tail lights. A grill made from a catwalk and lots of other parts from other cars. I built this car 15 years ago with parts from your catalog and recently had to buy Patch Panel for my door.
