StarWatch By Gary Becker - The Eclipse that Almost Isn’t On the evening of May 24/25, one of the most ephemeral of astronomical events takes place. It is a partial penumbral eclipse of the moon. Lunar eclipses occur when the sun, Earth, and moon are aligned so precisely that the moon passes through one or both of the shadows of the Earth. The Earth, or for that matter any astronomical body, produces two types of shadows, an umbra and a penumbra, derived from the Latin and meaning shade and light shade respectively. Any portion of the moon that is inside

the Earth’s umbra would be a location from which an astronaut on the moon would see the Earth completely blocking the

the Earth covering part of the sun. Because of the sizes of the umbra and penumbra at the moon’s distance, four types of lunar eclipses are possible. The moon can pass completely into Earth’s umbra creating a total lunar eclipse or the moon can pass partly into the umbra creating a partial lunar eclipse. The moon can also pass completely into the penumbra, producing a total penumbral eclipse, or partly into the penumbra with the rest of the moon in sunlight. This would be called a partial

usually passes either above or below Earth’s shadow, and no eclipse happens at all. Three lunar eclipses arise in 2013 and they are all losers, but the worst of the lot, “visible” from the Americas starts at 11:53 p.m. EDT on May 24 and ends 33 minutes later at 12:26 a.m. May 25. Only four percent of the diameter of the moon penetrates into the Earth’s penumbral shadow, an event that will go unnoticed by even the keenest of observational eyes. Still for the records, it has to be listed as a lunar eclipse, the eclipse that almost isn’t. www.astronomy.org

Land of the FreeBecause of the Brave.

“UNITED IN STRENGTH”President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members

for their patriotic service in support of our country. On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to replace separate Army, Navy,Marine Corps and Air Force Days. The single-day celebration stemmed from the unification of the Armed Forces under one department- the Department of Defense. In a speech announcing the formation of the day, President Truman “praised the work of the military services at home and across theseas” and said, “it is vital to the security of the nation and to the establishment of a desirable peace.” In an excerpt from the PresidentialProclamation of Feb. 27, 1950, Mr. Truman stated: Armed Forces Day, Saturday, May 20, 1950, marks the first combined demonstrationby America’s defense team of its progress, under the National Security Act, towards the goal of readiness for any eventuality. It is the firstparade of preparedness by the unified forces of our land, sea, and air defense.According to a New York Times article published on May 17, 1952: “This is the day on which we have the welcome opportunity to payspecial tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces...to all the individuals who are in the service of their country all over theworld. Armed Forces Day won’t be a matter of parades and receptions for a good many of them. They will all be in line of duty and someof them may give their lives in that duty.”

StrangeStrange BUTBUT TRUETRUE

A The Japanese sent the bombs attached to balloons toward North America, where air currents would no longer hold them aloft and they would crash to the ground, say William J. Neal et al. in “Atlantic Coast Beaches.” Beach

sand served as ballast to adjust the balloons’ buoyancy for the cross-ocean trip. Because of the sand’s unique mix of minerals in its heavy-mineral fraction, Allied geologists were able to deduce the balloon release site by poring over every available geologic map of Japan and noting the location of surface rocks the minerals could have come from. Then “the release site was bombed, and because the American news media had been ordered not to report fi res resulting from the incendiary balloons, the Japanese assumed the effort wasn’t working and abandoned the project.”

Q When during World War II incendiary bombs rained down on U.S. and Canadian forests and set them ablaze, what were the “fi ngerprints in the sand” to help pinpoint the source and stop the attacks?

Did you know? The Super Bowl presents

many moments to make plays for the record books. Athletes have scored places in history with their memorable performances in the Super Bowl. For example, wide receiver Jerry Rice, no stranger to the Super Bowl during his days with the San Francisco 49ers, holds the Super Bowl record for the most receiving yards in a single game after hauling in 215 yards on 11 catches in Super Bowl XXIII in 1989 against the Cincinnati Bengals. The 49ers won the game 20-16. TF131835
