Quick Tips: Money Tip

Some people consider a

mortgage a type of good debt because you are able to deduct the interest you’ve paid. But realize that you are still paying interest. If you’ve had your mortgage for a while, you are paying less in interest, but also getting a smaller tax deduction. Once you have credit card debt paid off, try to pay down your mortgage faster. The savings really add up in the long run.

Quotations: Flag Day That piece of red, white and blue bunting means five thousand years of struggle upwards. It is the full-grown flower of ages of fighting for liberty. It is the century plant of human hope in bloom. – Alvin Owsley

We take the stars from heaven, the red from our mother country, separating it by white stripes, thus showing that we have separated from her, and the white stripes shall go down to posterity, representing our liberty. – George Washington

We are the lavishest and showiest and most luxury-loving people on the earth; and at our masthead we fly one true and honest symbol, the gaudiest flag the world has ever seen. – Mark Twain

The red and white and starry blue is freedom’s shield and hope. – John Philip Sousa

The flag of the United States has not been created by rhetorical sentences in declarations of independence and in bills of rights. It has been created by the experience of a great people, and nothing is written upon it that has not been written by their life. It is the embodiment, not of a sentiment, but of a history. – Woodrow Wilson

When we view a flag, which to the eye is beautiful, and to contemplate its rise and origin inspires a sensation of sublime delight, our national honor must unite with our interests to prevent injury to the one, or insult to the other. – Thomas Paine

When I think of the flag…I see alternate strips of parchment upon which are written the rights of liberty and justice, and stripes of blood to vindicate those rights, and then, in the corner, a prediction of the blue serene into which every nation may swim which stands for these great things. – Woodrow Wilson

Our flag is not just one of many political points of view. Rather, the flag is a symbol of our national unity. – Adrian Cronauer

Water Safety for Your Dog Recreation around water increases in the summertime for both people and pets. If

you are planning on taking your dog boating or to a lake or river, be sure to keep these safety tips in mind.

Provide plenty of shadeYour pooch will need to take a break from the sun, so make sure that you provide a

shady place to lie down and rest. Place your pet’s water bowl in the shade as well to keep the water as cool as possible.

Take care with swimmingNot all dogs are good swimmers. Don’t leave your pet unsupervised near water.

When on a boat, be sure to strap on a floatation device made for dogs. After swimming, rinse your dog to remove chlorine or salts from his fur. Discourage your dog from drinking pool or lake water, as this can cause an upset stomach.

Watch out for heat stroke and dehydrationDon’t assume that just because you are near the water, your dog cannot become

dehydrated. Provide clean water whether you are on shore or on a boat. If your dog has difficulty breathing, excessive panting, drooling, or weakness, get him indoors to a cool place as soon as possible. If his symptoms don’t improve quickly, call your vet.

We salute all fathers this Father’s Day

2300 South Douglas Highway • (307) 686-4060

Celebrate Dad’s day, with lots of quick, affordable gifts and show

him how much you appreciate him every day.

It’s the Thought That Counts A seventeen year old boy was out late with his

friends one summer night when he realized that the next day was Father’s Day. He had forgotten all about it. So after finding an open store, he was disappointed to find only two cards left on the picked-over rack. He read them both, shrugged his shoulders, and left with one of the cards.

The next morning, he tumbled out of bed, made his way downstairs, and presented his card to his dad. His father read it and then looked up with a puzzled expression on his face.

“You’ve been like a father to me,” he said questioning.

“Well,” said the boy, “you’re lucky I didn’t get the one that said, ‘Now that I am a father too!’”

Father’s DayGetting ready to gift Dad for Father’s Day? To those heading to the menswear department of their local clothing stores, do not even think about veering toward the tie display. Doesn’t Dad deserve something a little more than a necktie?Father’s Day celebrates the scores of fathers who get up early every morning and head to work to provide for their families. It also honors the men who devote their free time to coach baseball practices, lead scouting troops, run behind a bicycle while a child is learning to ride, and so many other fatherly tasks.Every year kids (and their moms) fret over what to purchase for the special man of the house. Maybe Dad has a hobby or interest that makes gifting easy. Too often, however, figuring out a Father’s Day present can be a challenge.

Although neckties top the list of go-to gifts, chances are Dad wouldn’t be upset if he didn’t unwrap one this year. Instead, think about these less-cliche gifts.

“Of the month” club: Enroll Dad in one of those series subscriptions that sends him a new item to try every month. From fruit to books, there are many opportunities to find something he’ll enjoy. Plus, this shows Dad he’s special more than one day during the year.Food basket: If the “way to a man’s heart is through his stomach,” a gift basket filled with his favorite treats will be a winner. Look for specialty items that he enjoys but seldom buys.Sports game: Buy tickets to attend a game when Dad’s favorite sports team will be playing nearby. Wrap the tickets

with some team memorabilia, like a new hat or T-shirt.Dinner for two: Although Father’s Day is to celebrate the special bond Dad has with his children, a father who often sacrifices his time to be with the kids may not have many private moments with the other special person in his life. Arrange dinner reservations for two, so parents can go out and enjoy a little adult time.Fish aquarium: Tending to and watching fish can be a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. Purchase Dad a new fish tank and accessories and make a date to go together to pick out fish to fill it.Something to make chores easier: Think about the chores that Dad does but may not enjoy. Arrange for an easier way to get those chores done.

For the father who doesn’t relish mowing and tending to the lawn, reserve a lawn-care service for a month or two to ease Dad’s workload.Automotive accessories: Oftentimes, a car or truck is viewed as an extension of its owner. Dad may adore his ride and items that will help him wash, wax and buff it into a pristine vision will no doubt be appreciated. There are many Father’s Day gifts to purchase or arrange that go beyond the stereotypical gifts bestowed year after year. Kids can make this celebration even better with gifts that really show they care.

Two young boys were arguing about who had the better dad.

“You know the Alps in Switzerland?” asked one boy. “My dad built them.”

“Well, you know the Dead Sea?” asked the other boy.

“Yeah,” said the first boy.

“It was my dad who killed it!”

My Dad is Better Than Your Dad

Page 6 The Advertiser - June 13, 2012

Fathers, we salute you! It’s that time of year again, time to take a moment and let dad know that you appreciate all he does. And as I figure it, what better way to do dad a solid than by paying homage to that manliest of meal makers.... meat!

For some added perspective, I turned to a young family friend who is hands-down one of the most enthusiastic meat eaters in my life. “Meat is only the greatest product ever to be ingested by man,” he said wryly. “It is what manicures, pedicures, and bubble baths are to women. Would you care for extra bacon with your breakfast? Do you want extra ham on your sandwich? Can I get you the 8 oz steak, rather than the 6 oz? The answer to all of these: absolutely.”

With that response, I knew I was on the right track... meat is definitely on our menu this Father’s Day! It’s an absolute, rock solid fact that you’ll always win with Ashley Muller’s recipe for Bold Tastin’ Grilled Steak. (After all, when in doubt go bold, right?) With a beautifully rich marinade comprised of 9 common herbs and spices like nutmeg and cinnamon, this steak packs a big flavor punch with just a smidge of effort. “This was a favorite when I was growing up!” exclaims Ashley. ìWe rarely got to have meat but when we did, we sure loved the bold flavors this marinade brought out!!”

For the ultimate comforting menu counterpart, toss together Ellen Curry’s Cheesy Mashed Potato Bake. This creamy, dreamy casserole brings all the great flavor - and memories - of traditional potato pancakes in a one-pot recipe. Combine mashed potatoes, breadcrumbs and your favorite cheeses, and you’re on your way. “I did this instead of

making individual potato cakes and frying them,” says Ellen, who utilizes leftover mashed potatoes as an easy shortcut. This has fast become a favorite in our house, each satisfying bite perfectly complementing the grilled steak. Simple as simple can be, but oh-so tasty!

What goes well with meat and potatoes? How about dad’s favorite cocktail?! “In his younger years, my dad William was a

bartender and he created it,” explains Sacramento’s Kathleen Ralston. She has carried on the tradition of her dad’s sweetly refreshing creation. Made from brandy and triple sec, this creamy drink is the perfect punctuation to a warm day. “It never had a name,” she says, “but he said it was similar to a side car [so we named it after him.] It’s pretty darned good!”

And for dessert it’s got to be Linda Isaacs’ Guinness Chocolate Cake. Combining the best of beer and chocolate, moms and dads the world over are falling for this uber rich bundt cake. Like so many of our favorite cakes, Linda’s utilizes sour cream as its secret weapon. The result is an extra moist slice of love on a plate. A must try!

The happiest of wishes and dishes go out to all you fathers. Now how about that 8-ounce? You deserve it.

As winter begins turning to spring, the days get longer & activities increase. Spring is the season when life is renewed. One important way to help renew life is to give blood. “Giving blood during springtime can be a great tradition, like spring cleaning, and it’s a gift that the recipient will always remember,” said Lori Liebman, Donor Recruitment Director of Rapid City’s United Blood Services. By giving blood, a donor helps replenish a community resource used by a neighbor, relative or friend. Blood can be stored for only 42 days, so a continual fresh supply is crucial. Anyone may need blood at any time. In the event of an accident, serious illness, or surgery, an adequate blood supply will make the difference between life & death. Make your appointment to give blood at www.unitedbloodservices.org or by calling 605-342-8585 in Rapid City. With each donation, donors receive a free total cholesterol test & earn points in United Blood Services’ Hero in Me reward program.
