From the Newsletter Editor
Dear ONTA Member,
Twenty two years ago in Canada, the city of Guelph (Ontario) hosted the First
International Congress of Nematology (5-10 August 1984). ONTA was one of the various
nematology societies participating in the congress. This was an historical meeting that
marked the beginning of the International Federation of Nematology Societies (IFNS) and six
successful international congresses have been organized since then. This year, ONTA and
SON are also having a joint meeting in Canada, this time in Montreal. Indeed, this will be the
Meeting of the Americas, and one that we eagerly await.
To mark this special occasion, we would like to share with our ONTA members a
memento of the Guelph Congress in the form of the group photograph, thus rekindling many
good memories for those of you who attended the meeting.
Kind regards,
Rosa

FROM THE ONTA PRESIDENT
Thinking of the future
Dear ONTA members,
To think of the future of ONTA,
we need to look back. Young generations
of nematologists will have the
responsibility of leading the mid- and
long-term direction of ONTA, without
forgetting our origins. In 1967, Dr Jesse
Román from Puerto Rico, together with a
group of visionary nematologists, made
the decision to create ONTA. I think at
that time they were not aware of the
impact and success that this memorable
meeting would have. We need to realize
that almost 50 years have passed and over
this time ONTA has celebrated
consecutive and successful meetings year
after year. Twenty five countries have
hosted ONTA meetings, most of them
located in the Americas, but with a few
exceptions. Most countries have hosted
one, if not more ONTA meetings (Table 1)

As ONTA members, all of us
should feel proud of our organization – the
road has not always been easy but
fortunately ONTA has had great
nematologists who have done a great job
keeping the flame alive for half a century.
This is the only way if we want to have
ONTA around for another 50 years or even
more. The new generations have a big
challenge but, as a starting point, they
must recognize the spirit, courage and
enthusiasm of Drs A. Ayala, J. Román, R.
Chevres-Román and L. F. Martorell of
Puerto Rico; R. Barriga Olivares,

Colombia; G. Blair, Trinidad; J. E.
Edmunds, St. Lucia; and J. A. Winchester
and A. C. Tarjan, USA as founders of
ONTA.
My goal here is to motivate the
young members of ONTA, because in their
hands lies the future of our beloved
organization. I want to encourage all of
you to participate in our activities, giving
new ideas and being innovative. I hope
that someday in the future, the hearts of
ONTA Members will be jumping for joy
on the occasion of the 100 anniversary in
2067. This may sound like a dream, but
what would our life be if we did not
dream. All dreams are possible if we work
for them. As ONTA President I would like
to offer my best wishes for success in the
coming meeting in Montreal Canada.
Sincerely yours
M.Sc. Alejandro Esquivel

FROM THE VICE-PRESIDENT
Dear ONTA members,
I would like to thank all of you for
giving me the opportunity to serve as
ONTA Vice-president during 2015 and
2016. My special thanks to the individuals
who nominated me as a candidate; it is a
wonderful opportunity for me to be part of
the leadership team of our Society. I
appreciate the efforts of the Directive
Committee members who are working to
organize our Annual Meeting and other
activities of the ONTA Organization.
I take great pleasure in sharing
experiences and interacting with
distinguished ONTA members during the
annual meetings. It is both an honor and a
great opportunity to be part of this
important group of nematologists to
support their efforts in furthering the
understanding of plant- and insect-parasitic
nematodes. We share common goals in
generating information, providing
information and advice to our members,
and in fostering and encouraging future
generations of nematologists to continue
these tasks.
The challenge for ONTA
nematologists is to develop research teams
that work together, share knowledge and
experiences, and collaboratively generate
new mechanisms of control of nematodes
that avoid environmental contamination.
This same collaboration is both necessary
and important in the training of the new
generation of nematologists. A well-
educated and informed cadre of
nematologists will continue to be
necessary to guide agricultural production
in tropical areas of the world, and ONTA
must be prepared to be part of this
challenge.
During our meeting in Montreal,
Canada, I hope to motivate our ONTA
organization to develop concrete proposals
and actions for research, extension and
teaching priorities. I am sure that we will
have many opportunities to contribute
ideas and to exchange experiences.
Sincerely yours,
Dr Ignacio Cid del Prado Vera

Brazilian Nematological Society. The
IFNS has selected Antibes as the venue for
its next congress.
Please join us in thanking each of
the societies that extended invitations to
host our next congress, declaring their
willingness to do the hard work needed to
create another of these especially
important events for nematology and the
professional and personal bonds among
nematologists. The individuals and
societies that stepped forward with
outstanding proposals have our sincere
thanks and appreciation.
With the conclusion of this
election, we must now focus on the form
and function of next congress. We shall be
communicating with our previous officers
and past organizing committee members
for guidance in this process.

Association of Applied Biologists
(AAB): Advances in Nematology
Meeting 15 December 2015
Sue Hockland
The one day meeting ‘Advances in
Nematology’ in London received 60
delegates from the UK, several European
countries, China, Israel, Japan and the
USA at ‘The Linnean Society of London’.
Several students attended, either from the
UK or studying in Europe or elsewhere,
which reinforced a major driving force of
the meeting as a place where students are
encouraged to make presentations and
have discussions with the wider
nematology community in a welcoming
and historic atmosphere.
The meeting talks began with
invited speaker Dr Sara Sánchez-Moreno,
from the National Institute for Agricultural
and Food Research and Technology in
Spain, discussing whether organic
management does improve soil health. The
remainder of the session included talks by
students with impressive visual
presentations and a high quality of
delivery, with a common theme of the
biology and control of root-knot
nematodes. The morning session ended
with a visually splendid presentation by
student Xue Qing from Ghent University,
on the use of three-dimensional modeling
and printing as tools to enhance education
and research in nematology.
The poster presenters of a wide
range of subjects gained from having their
own one-minute introduction after lunch,
and having their posters displayed in the
library all day. The afternoon session
commenced with invited speaker Gareth
Martin from BASF Agricultural
Specialities, on the commercial
development of entomopathogenic
nematodes, and followed by a talk by
Robbie Rae, Liverpool John Moores
University, UK, on studies with nematode
parasites of slugs. After the poster session,
developments with research on potato cyst
nematodes in the UK and Norway were
presented. The Brian Kerry award for the
best student platform presentation was
presented to Nele Schouteden, from the
Division of Crop Biotechnics in Belgium,
who also received a new book kindly
donated by CABI.
Finally, as Matt Back (Harper
Adams University) kindly acknowledged
at the end of this meeting, the day marked
the end of my involvement with its
organization, as I hand over to those who
are in daily touch with other members of

our discipline. I have thoroughly enjoyed
helping to organize these meetings for the
last few years, and thank all those who
have helped to make this event a
continuing success, despite the challenges
that face nematology both in the UK and in
Europe generally.
I am confident that this success
will continue in the future, but this does
depend on all nematologists continuing to
get involved, support the next generation
as they develop their careers, and maintain
this event as a very valuable one for
helping to put the science of nematology
into practice.
The AAB look forward to
receiving offers for this year’s meeting,
which will be held on 13 December 2016,
again at The Linnean Society of London.
