Ecclesiastes 3:1-13
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter
under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant,
and a time to pluck up what is planted; a time to kill, and a time to
heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; a time to weep,
and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; a time to
throw away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to
embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; a time to seek, and a
time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to throw away; a time to tear,
and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; a time
to love, and a time to hate; a time for war, and a time for peace. What
gain have the workers from their toil? I have seen the business that
God has given to everyone to be busy with.
He has made everything suitable for its time; moreover, he has
put a sense of past and future into their minds, yet they cannot find
out what God has done from the beginning to the end. I know that
there is nothing better for them than to be happy and enjoy
themselves as long as they live; moreover, it is God’s gift that all
should eat and drink and take pleasure in all their toil.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-13
There are the earthly seasons: Fall, Winter, Spring and Summer. There are
the church seasons: Advent, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, Pentecost. And there are
the seasons of life: Childhood, Adolescence, Young Adulthood, Middle Age,
Older Adulthood and Senior Adulthood.
Some seasons end or begin with the simple turn of a page on the calendar.
Some seasons transition with a marked sign; shorter days, colder nights or the
coming rains. Some personal seasons turn with good life events; a marriage,
birth of a child, a graduation, a new job, retirement. While some personal
seasons shift by bad life events: death, divorce, loss of a job or poor health.
Ecclesiastes encourages us to welcome the new season as a time to be about
God’s work. The danger in reading the first part of this familiar scripture
passage without the latter part is that we adopt a Que Sera, Sera (Whatever Will
Be, Will Be) attitude and become resigned to whatever life throws our way. Yet,
the latter part of this reading gives hope that God has and will implant purpose
and joy into whatever season God brings.
I appreciate the notion that God “has put a sense of past and future into our minds.” Yet I also claim the mystery that there is much outside my mind. There are things of God that I do not understand. So, as the seasons change, I look to God for purpose and joy.
Your servant,
Keith

JANUARY MISSION PRAYER PARTNERS
Boulware Mission is a faith-
based shelter that has been
serving Owensboro and its
surrounding counties since
1921. Boulware’s programs help
displaced individuals identify
and overcome obstacles to their
financial well-being and
independence.
But more specifically, we
ask that you pray about and
direct any donations toward our
biggest need of all right now –
HEAT! We’ve had an older heating unit down for several weeks now, and
we’re having trouble finding parts for it. As the temperatures continue to
drop, this is going to become a bigger issue as we get more clients looking for
space. Please ask your congregation to join us in praying for a permanent
solution to this ongoing problem. God Bless You!
