The overriding principle in this decision is to listen carefully to what the congregation is saying. They have spoken and your Session has heard: in virtually all of the surveys, the focus groups (some going back several years), the February Lecture Series, and in the verbal and written comments we received following the Town Hall Meetings on May 5, the need to get to know one another on a deeper level was expressed over and over again. Indeed, 202 persons surveyed have expressed a desire for more opportunities for small groups. Further surveys have demonstrated that about the only available time in our busy lives—the best available time for small groups—is on Sunday morning. So the Session’s decision restores time for education and small groups between services. IN THIS ISSUE

On Wednesday, May 22, 2019, GPC’s Session approved a motion to return to two Sunday morning worship services, with time in between for education and small groups. This decision was taken after much

discussion, upon the recommendation of a Task Force, which has been studying the move since last fall, and after town hall meetings and significant input from our church members.

Beginning July 7, the Sunday morning schedule will be: 8:45–9:45 AM Early Worship 10:00–11:00 AM Dedicated Education/ Small Group Hour 11:15 AM – 12:15 PM Late Worship & Youth Hour

Why change?

The Sunday morning schedule adopted by the Session says to ourselves and to anyone who might visit that we are committed to one another—to getting to know and love one another the way Jesus taught his disciples to do. We are inspired by:

“Not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more . . .” (Hebrews 10:25)

YOUTH & YOUNG ADULTS’ MINISTRY

On The Journey <><, Carrie Larsen

Director of Youth & Young Adult Ministries(562) 777-5364 (mobile)

Summer is fast approaching and we are gearing up to greet summer with lots of youth activities. Mark your calendars for some great summer fun! Summer youth events will take place on Sunday mornings and Wednesday nights June 2–14. We will take a 3-week break for summer camp and mission trips and then have one last week of fun August 4–10. Parents of youth: Please see your weekly emails for a more detailed list of events.

Greetings, friends! On June 1, I will have been serving as Director of Music and Worship Arts here at GPC for 3 months. As I reflect, I am overwhelmed by the warm-hearted, welcoming spirit that is so fundamental to the ministry of GPC. Thank you for the many ways in which you have included me in the life of the church. I am truly grateful, and look forward to growing with you in the future.

As you probably know, we have a number of music ensembles here at GPC. I wholeheartedly invite everyone to join us in our music ministry. We have folks of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of experience in our programs. No prior experience is necessary. Our ensembles include handbells, contemporary praise bands, traditional Chancel Choir, the International Ensemble, Christian Women Fellowship, and, of course, programs for children of all ages. For more information, please contact me. Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you!

ROSINA AKUESON I was born in Ghana and grew up in Tutu Akuapim, Eastern Region of Ghana. I was baptized at Tutu Akuapim Presbyterian Church in Ghana when I was young and grew up in the church.

I have two beautiful children, Diane and Daniel. We began attending

GPC in 2009 and I became a member in 2010. I’m more than happy to serve the Lord as an Elder. Thank you for nominating me.

ASENATH FOY ASANG I was born into a Presbyterian family in Cameroon, the fourth in line of eight siblings. My father was a pastor in the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon, so I grew up rooted in the Presbyterian faith. I accompanied him on his missionary work, serving 23 congregations, carrying his luggage from one village to another

while trekking. It was fun and exciting accompanying him on these journeys taking the gospel to people in faraway areas.

I’m married with five grown children. We moved to the US in 2008 and joined the GPC family in 2012. I’m currently the Secretary of CWF at GPC, a member of the Congregational Life Ministry, and I also serve on the communion preparation team.

I’m thankful to God for all the blessings that He has bestowed on me and also for the good values that my parents instilled in me, especially doing work in God’s vineyard. I pray for God to give me strength and to equip me to carry out the assignments set before me now. To God be the glory!

MEET THE CANDIDATES!Class of 2022

ELDERS GRACE NDJONGOI was born into a Christian family in the rural area of Kedjom Keku located in the Northwest province of Cameroon. I attended Sunday School regularly and went to church every Sunday.

I later joined the CWF movement as my mother before me had

done. I also joined the congregational choir of my Bastos congregation in Yaoundé, Cameroon. I remained a member of the Bastos congregation, a chorister, and CWF member until 2007, when I moved to the US.

I initially lived in Baltimore and was a member of the Inverness Presbyterian Church. I moved to the Silver Spring area and started attending GPC in late 2012, becoming a member in 2014.

I worked as a nurse in Cameroon from 1986 to 2007, first in the pediatric unit, and then in the surgery unit OR. After arriving in the US, I began working in Baltimore as a CNA. Since moving to the DMV in 2009, I’ve worked with persons with developmental disabilities as a residential manager and then program coordinator.

I’m married to FNU Ndjongo, and together we have three boys.

LUCY NZELLEMy entire family is Presbyterian. My late uncle was a Presbyterian pastor for many years, and my mother and grandmother were Elders in the Presbyterian Church in Cameroon.

7 | JUNE 2019 | THE MAINSTREAM

After my studies in London, I moved to Houston, Texas, and attended the University of Houston, where I earned a Bachelor’s degree in Hotel & Restaurant Management in 1993. I relocated to Maryland and was a member of Silver Spring Presbyterian Church. After a few years, I decided to attend GPC, which is closer to my home, and have only returned to SSPC on special occasions. I earned a Master’s degree in Non-Profit Management from Trinity Washington University and recently received a second Master’s degree, in Public and Community Healthcare, from Trinity. I currently work as an Administrative Assistant at Debevoise & Plimpton in Washington, DC.

After attending GPC for a few years, I decided to become a member in 2016. I’ve served as an Usher Captain for a few years and served on the Nominating Committee twice. I’m honored to be considered for the position of Elder.

RAYMOND MAWUENA RAVEN I was born in Lomé, Togo (West Africa) and earned an MBA with specializations in Project Management and Nonprofits Financial Management from the University of Maryland University College. I worked for Peapod for a while before joining the U.S. Postal Service in 2005.

Sarah and I were married in 2000, a marriage later blessed here at GPC in August 2016. We live in Germantown with our two daughters, Elfreda Grace and Rebecca Love.

I come from a family that has deep roots in the Evangelical and Presbyterian teaching since Germany’s colonial rule in Togo and part of Ghana. A lifelong Presbyterian, I began attending GPC as a regular visitor in 2002 and became a member in 2014.

I’ve been involved with the Young Families Ministry and we, as a family, have participated in many retreats. I was on the last Director of Children and Young Families Search Committee, which hired our current, dedicated director, Carolyn Hayes.

We are blessed to have a diverse community at GPC—something I’ve always liked about this congregation—and I'm honored and humbled to be considered worthy to serve as an Elder. With God’s grace and help, I willingly accept this call to serve the Lord among His people with dedication, joy, and love. To that end, I respectfully request your prayers for me and my family. God bless you all.

KEITH RUSH I was born on a farm near Haviland, Kansas, and was a member of the Haviland Friends Church until 1962, when my wife, Sally, and I joined the First Presbyterian Church of Manhattan, Kansas. After receiving my Master’s degree from Kansas State University, we moved to Gambrills, Maryland. I was in the

Army at Fort Meade and Sally taught 6th Grade in Bowie. We became members of Christian Community Presbyterian Church of Bowie, where our son and daughter were baptized.

I joined IBM in 1967, and in 1971, IBM moved us to Topeka, Kansas. We joined the Trinity Presbyterian Church, where Sally and I taught Sunday school and I became a ruling Elder.

We moved to Gaithersburg with IBM in 1978, and have been members of GPC for 41 years. We enjoy the great adult Sunday School classes very much. Sally and I have taught Sunday School and worked in the nursery. Sally was an ruling Elder from 1983–1985. We have been members of a covenant group that has met monthly since 1992 and have attended VIPS meetings since I retired from IBM in 2012.

I served as a Deacon from 2013–2015, one of the first three Deacons when GPC started electing them again. I enjoyed serving as in this capacity and still accompany some of the current Deacons on visits. I became involved at Summit Hall Elementary School in 2014 and helped teach math in the 3rd Grade for 3 years and the 5th Grade for 1 year.

I look forward to serving as a ruling Elder again.

TERRY YOUNG I was born and raised in Western Pennsylvania. My wife, Megan, and I moved to Maryland 21 years ago for a new teaching job. I've taught in different capacities (elementary, middle, and high school, with a few years at Montgomery College) and am the Resource Teacher for the

Technology, Health, and Phys Ed Departments at Poolesville HS. Our children—Hayden, Max, and Lainey—have grown up in GPC. I’ve been involved in activities here, including teaching Sunday School, helping with VBS, working with the youth, going on mission trips, and helping with the Prison Ministry Bible cart. I'm looking forward to assisting in this new role and growing closer to God and His disciples.

KEVIN COIT I was born outside Boston, Massachusetts, and baptized in the Congregationalist Church. As a young man, I was active in the Pilgrim Youth Fellowship. I attended Bethany College in West Virginia, where I obtained a degree in sociology, with a minor in religion.

I moved here in 1971 and served as a Montgomery County police officer for 12 years. My career centered around patrol work and labor relations. Since then I've been in sales, served as the director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes in Montgomery County, and currently teach at Montgomery College.

My wife, Nancy, and I were married in 1972. In 1975, we joined Darnestown Presbyterian Church, where I became a Deacon in 1977. In 1983, we became members of GPC. At first I was an adult education facilitator. I later became an Elder but may be remembered more for working with the youth. I began teaching Sunday School for Bill Craig in the early 1990’s and still serve in that capacity. A few years ago, I also accepted a call to become a Youth Advisor.

PATRICIA CUMMINGS I grew up on a farm in Green Bank, West Virginia, and my family attended the Presbyterian Church there.

GPC has been my church home since we moved here in 1970. I’ve enjoyed being a part of many committees, and I organized the

Puppeterians, a puppet ministry. I’ve served as an Elder three times and, more recently, I became a part of the Art Group. Currently, I’m a member of the Vital Worship Ministry. As a volunteer with Gaithersburg HELP, I serve as a Food Coordinator. In all these activities I’ve tried to glorify and serve our Lord and have been blessed and comforted by the fellowship of friends.

I’m a retired teacher. I spent 25 years of my career right here at GPP&K teaching 3- and 4-year-olds and Kindergarteners and then moved to the public schools for 9 years, where I taught Kindergarten.

I have two grown children and four grandchildren.

I'm thankful for this new opportunity to serve our Lord as a Deacon, and know that He will guide me in this journey.

JANIS REX I grew up in Ken Mawr, a suburb of Pittsburgh, and attended McKees Rocks High School. I graduated from Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, with a Bachelor of Music Education degree.

I taught music on Neville Island, Pennsylvania, and played organ in a Presbyterian Church, where I met my future husband, Don, who was the Sunday School Superintendent. We were married in that church in 1956 and moved to Washington, Pennsylvania. I taught music in one-room schools in Claysville, Pennsylvania. What a wonderful experience!

We lived several places before moving to the Washington, DC, area. Don and I became members of GPC in 1969 in Fellowship Hall, the only GPC building at that time. I have served two terms on Session and am a Stephen Minister. I’ve sung in the Chancel Choir, and was GPC’s Treasurer for 18 years when the Sanctuary and Buildings 3 & 4 were built. I’m now the bookkeeper for GPP&K and I play the piano for Sunday morning worship in the Asbury Chapel.

I am blessed with a wonderful family. My son, Scott, grew up at GPC and met his wife, Tracey, in youth group. My granddaughter, Kellie, is a paramedic.

I grew up in the Methodist Church and became a Presbyterian when I married. I love the Lord. He has been faithful, holding me through some challenges, as have the loving people of GPC.

Shes updateSummer is upon us and school activities are winding down. Stuart and I enjoyed the Dance Club Performance at Gaithersburg HS with Summit Hall students from Kindergarten to 5th Grade performing. The teachers even did a number, complete with funny tutus and a cartwheel by the assistant principal!

During the summer, please remember to save your Box Top$ for Education from food and household products. These are the little red stamp-like images on the boxes of many items that we all use. Collection boxes are located in Lindsay Hall and the main office of the church.

Our contribution of these tiny stamps has tripled the buying ability for items not covered by the school budget. For those of us who are seniors, it's like saving up and then using Green Stamps to acquire so many great things!

See you in September,Marilyn Morrison

Gaithersburg Presbyterian Church is on AmazonSmile!

Remember that if you shop online using Amazon.com, by switching your Amazon account to an amazonsmile account you can easily and seamlessly donate to GPC every time you buy qualifying products. The same products are available at the same prices as Amazon and there is no cost to you or GPC. It is completely anonymous. GPC receives no information about you or your purchases. Switching to an amazonsmile account is simple. Enter the URL smile.amazon.com, follow the prompts for account setup, and then select a charity. Type “Gaithersburg Presbyterian Church” into the “Or pick your own charitable organization:” box and select it from the list!

Once you have completed enrollment and selected your charity, just shop as you normally would. If you happen to select a product labeled “Eligible for amazonsmile donation,” your designated charity will automatically receive 0.5% of the total of the eligible products. For your convenience, your amazonsmile account retains your Amazon.com account settings (shopping cart, Wish List, wedding/baby registry) and your member benefits, including Amazon Prime. You can easily switch between your accounts by typing the desired URL, amazon.com or smile.amazon.com.

GPC Greenbrier Camping/Day at the Lake

Again this summer, the Moshers and the Chois are organizing

a trip to Greenbrier State Park. For those who are looking for a more rustic weekend together, please join us for tent

Camping, August 30 – September 1,

or just a Day at the Lake, August 31.

GPC families will be camping in the Ash Loop. Early birds from GPC have already reserved sites 6, 7, 9, and 10 down near the lake. Anyone who likes camping is invited to reserve a site nearby. All sites nearby are currently available. Don’t wait.

Reserve Now.

Even if you aren’t into camping, Greenbrier is a great place to spend a Saturday at the lake. The only “official” activity will be a potluck style dinner on Saturday night. The rest of the time is open for swimming, boating, hiking, fishing, etc. The Moshers will again be offering canoe rides. The Moshers and Chois hope that many other families will join them.

NOTE: THIS IS A DO-IT-YOURSELF TRIP. YOU RESERVE. YOU BRING FOOD. YOU BRING A TENT. YOU MAKE ALL ARRANGEMENTS. It’s for families who want to go camping or spend a day at the lake and might want the fellowship of other GPC families nearby as well.

Please email Kwang at [email protected]

and Fred at [email protected] with your site #, or if you are interested in being kept in the loop for this activity.

Also, feel free to email us with any questions that you may have. It’s a beautiful park and a great starter experience if you’ve never been camping.

You can find more information about the park at http://dnr.maryland.gov/publiclands/Pages/western/greenbrier.aspx

The link for camping reservations is https://parkreservations.maryland.gov/

For a copy of this flier, please go to https://primelabel.com/gpc.pdf

Finally, please help us spread the word. The more the merrier!
