T he New Year began with a bang as Bob

Knauer fired the canon signaling the start of the New Year. Bob was the lucky winner of the drawing at the New Years Eve party. Guests dined and danced the night away to the sounds of Auld Acquaintances and rang in 2012 in grand style with a champagne toast at midnight.

New PYC Club Manager The committee assigned with the task of screening candidates for the club manager position have completed their work. After reviewing nearly 140 appli-cations the committee recommended four to the Executive Committee, which in turn made their final recom-mendation to the Board of Trustees. The board unanimously approved the hiring of Gary Campbell as our new Club Manager. Gary started the first of January and worked closely with Fred and club staff ensuring a smooth transi-tion. Gary is certified club manager and has extensive club management

experience. Please introduce yourself to Gary when you are at the club.

Portland Boat Show Many of our members volunteered to work the PYC booth at the Portland Boat Show. This event is a good op-portunity for the club to showcase all of our facilities and activities to the boating community. Special thanks to Bob Bishop who for several years has coordinated the booth setup, materials, volunteer scheduling, and all the logis-tics associated with the show. The Membership Committee co-chairs, Dave Entler and Chris Finks, will fol-low up on the potential leads generated from the show.

Commodore’s Ball January was a busy month for the En-tertainment Committee with the Com-modore’s Ball just weeks following the NYE. This innovative and creative group decorated the club in red plaid and heather, bringing a touch of old Scotland to PYC. Doug Foster served as MC for dinner and the Officer in Charge for the change of command ceremonies was Walter Witschard as-sisted by the Sea Scout ship Tsunami. Special thanks to Lucy Mitchem for creating the original illustration of the clubhouse for the program cover. At-tendees participated in the traditional Grand March before dancing to the sounds of the Ellen Whyte group.

Fuel Dock Pay-Pedestal The new fuel dock pay-pedestal system installation was in process last month and the membership will be provided with detailed instructions and training on the use the fueling system when it is completed. Staff will also be available to assist during the transition period. The system is one of many innovations planned for the coming year.

and make a “to do” list of repairs and maintenance items in your boathouse or slip. The committee will soon be inspecting the entire moorage and let-ters will be mailed afterwards to mem-bers in need of improvements and re-pairs.

Mardi Gras at PYC The traditional Crab Feed has been cancelled this year due the poor Dunge-ness harvest, the high price and limited availability. The committee also deter-mined that the vendor would not be able to provide enough crabs to fill our order. Added to the calendar to fill the void is the Mardi Gras party on Satur-day, February 18. Dale Richards will be the chef for the event that will feature a Cajun menu buffet. If you are inter-ested in joining the committee for this event, please contact either Dale or myself. Manager’s

    Report

T hank you to all of you who have taken the

time to stop and say hello as I get com-fortable in my new position. I must say that the members I have had the pleas-ure of meeting have been delightful. The club has a great reputation in the community, and the staff has consis-tently said that they feel very connected to the membership. During the last four weeks I have begun to appreciate the enthusiasm that members have for boating, and camaraderie associated with fun on the water. The club management selection process began with the Search Committee and subsequent interviews with various sev-eral former and current Board mem-bers. The process was very professional with much forethought given to the interview questions and what experi-ences were needed for the position to-day and in the future. My professional club management ca-reer began at the Venice Yacht Club in Venice Florida while attending business school at Florida State University. I have been in private club management for 18 years, 11 of which I have been the manager of two private clubs in the Northwest. I have always had a passion for the service industry and I also enjoy the business side of private club man-agement, but honestly the aspect I like the most is the varying day to day ac-tivities that are prevalent at your club. I’d like to thank Fred for his help in passing the torch during the last several weeks. There is so much to learn when starting at a new club. Fred has obvi-ously done a wonderful job serving the members and I look forward to build-ing continued success in the future. I look forward to serving the members of PYC and creating the most vibrant club in the Pacific Northwest. Thanks for welcoming me aboard.

    The Portlight’s Coverage Grows

N ew for 2012, the online version of the Portlight has expanded its coverage of PYC events. For example, January’s online version is four pages

longer than the twenty-four page hardcopy version. While the hardcopy version will continue to capture the essence of PYC, the need to manage the costs associated with its printing and distribution means being mindful of its total page count each month. The online version also pro-vides the opportunity to exhibit more of the photo contri-butions from the membership each month.

Also new in 2012 is the introduction of two-dimensional barcodes known as QR codes (short for Quick Response). When scanned with a smart-phone QR code reader application, these symbols will represent encoded URLs that will take you to additional content on the web. For example, the QR code on the right will take you to the online version of the Portlight at www.portlandyc.com/portlight.html. A QR code scanner application can be downloaded from your smartphone’s App store or market.

    Best Decorated Boats

    and Boat Houses

P YC once again looked great for the holiday season from both the river and Marine Drive!

Thank you to everyone who partici-pated!! Even though we got the an-

nouncement out late, we had several new entries and the judging was fre-quently difficult. The Best Decorated Row easily goes to E Row this year as they had 6 out of 10 (60%) of the boat houses decorated along with the entire hand rail.

The Judging Com-mittee would like to thank various mem-bers who tried to sway our votes with extravagant offer-ings, but we turned them all down! Maybe Next Year!!! There were a couple of rows without a single participant – would have been an easy win!! Plan ahead for next year!

T he Commodore has appointed Vice Commodore Larry Cirotski and Secretary/Treasurer Chris Dorn to Chair the Open and Closed Moorage Committees,

and to share the responsibility for the Combined Moorage on N Row. Their duties include assigning slips and working with boat owners to keep our docking facilities in a “safe, clean, at-tractive and seaworthy condition,” as stated in the Moor-age Rules. In addition, these rules include the display of cur-rent registration and VSC Safety Inspection stickers. To this end, Larry, Chris, and our new Club Manager, Gary Campbell, will be walking the docks on a regular basis with a

goal of reaching 100% compliance with the club’s Moorage Rules. PYC’s Opening Day Celebration is on the first Saturday of May (May 5th). The goal is that on that day our moorage shines. This includes the walkways, the boat houses, dock boxes, the slips and the vessels. Please forward constructive ideas and suggestions that will help with this undertaking to your respective chairperson, [email protected] or [email protected], or leave a note at the club office. Thank you in advance for your participation.

T he dock makes a crunching sound as your feet crush the ice crystals on the way to the boat. The air smells clean and it tingles the back of

your throat with each breath. The break in the rain has the river slowly flowing as an emerald stream of cold clarity. The crew rendezvous at the boat and starts the ritual of readying the sails, laying out the lines, and securing the gear. Fingers dart in and out of gloves as they manipulate canvas fasteners designed for warmer days. Crouched around the helm, the skipper makes note of the die-sel’s labored sounds as it fights off the ef-fects of the cold air and rumbles to life. You’re here because in spite of the weather, sitting at home just doesn’t compare to the joy and camaraderie of sailing with and against others. In-side your foul weather gear you’re warm, your mood is upbeat, and everyone aboard seems to be in good spirits. The last line comes aboard, the skipper backs the boat out of the slip, and an-other Sailing on Sundays race prepares to begin at 1 pm. This casual winter race series had its start in the brisk air during the latter half of 2009. Organized and run by PYC member Terry Johnson, S/V Ozyman-dias, the

event quickly grew in popularity as it filled a void left by no organized sailing on

the Columbia River in the winter. So grateful was the local sailing com-

munity for Terry’s efforts, that the Oregon Corinthian Sailing

Association acknowledged him as their “2010 OCSA

Sailor of the Year”. To-day, the event lives on as

    the CYC Sailing on Sundays Series. As in past years, PYC has several members partici-pating in the se-ries. For exam-ple, Frank Bo-carde/Bluefin, Gil M a c G r e g o r , Child of the Mist, Alden Andre/ Fly Bye, Brian Hedges, Mabe, Chris Dorn/Ruffian, Matt R i c e/ S e l k i e , Bob Martin/Rollerball, Andy McCann/Rya , Jack Becker/Passage, and Fred Hazzard/Fury.

I want to start out by saying how proud and honored I am to have been your Club Manager for the last thirteen years. My mission has always been to have you the

members and your guests feel comfortable and welcome each and every time that you visit the club. I may not have been 100% successful over the years but I hope that you are as proud of PYC as I am. As I look back on all of the improvements to the club since I started as your Club Manager, I realized that I am the one who should be praising you the members for all of your hard work as volunteers on all of the committees. The amount of time that all of you have given is indeed inspiring. Some of the wonderful changes that you have accomplished during my tenure are as follows: 1. Sold the rental house to buy the Bisonette Moorage. 2. Built the patio float clubhouse at the Outstation, im-

proved the docks and landscaping and upgraded the electrical as well.

    3. Had the Outstation dredged. 4. Built the back patio and retaining wall with new fenc-

ing. 5. Added the front sign and started the landscaping. 6. Replaced B-row decking and joists. 7. A complete remodel of N-row.

    8. Began the Moorage Upgrade with new concrete docks on L, M and N rows as well as installing new concrete marginal walk down to F row. The electrical has been upgraded between N and I rows. We have also re-placed pilings in the moorage as needed.

    9. Remodeled the Dining Room. 10. The Centennial clubhouse remodel with a new Bar

and Ballroom lounge. 11. Built the flag plaza and replaced our flagpole. 12. Repaved the Parking Lot. 13. New fence from clubhouse to storage yard. 14. Continued upgrade of the Outstation. 15. Recently completed the new attic stairs. 16. Built new Galley with all new stainless steel counters

and appliances. 17. Built storage area under the flag room. 18. Added new siding, windows, and insulation to the

clubhouse. 19. Last but not least won the Seamanship Award at

Opening Day. Thank you again for the opportunity to have served as the PYC Club Manager

T hanks to the efforts of many members, the outstation was upgraded in several ways last year. The new "Party Dock" is going to be a popular focal point for spontaneous social interactions, the car access really opened up with the pruning of the privacy trees, and a new Weber BBQ awaits your use, but please be sure to clean it and secure it

when you leave. Due to the dredging project which will take place at some time over the next few weeks, we have decided that it makes sense to postpone our annual spring cleanup until we know that project is complete. When that happens, we would like to schedule a work day to permanently connect the new dock extension in place and to do some general spring clean up at the same time. Watch your weekly email updates from PYC for further details. As always, we thank each of you that do your part to keep our outstation great, whether by joining work parties or just do-ing what you see needs doing to make the place better than you found it.
