Ancient Order Of Hibernians , Michael F. Hogan Division 15 — 85 Hibernian Way (Grand Ave), Massapequa, N.Y.

Wow, January
and February flew by
thankfully with little
snow to speak of. Now
March and April are
coming full force into
our lives.
As for March I would like to take the
opportunity to ask our members to please
come out and support any of the local St.
Patrick’s Day Parades, one of the first being
March 3rd in Bethpage. Junior Past Presi-
dent Bill Scharen is being honored as the
Grand Marshal, wouldn’t it look nice to have
a nice contingent of Hibernian brothers and
sisters march by him as he is on the review-
ing stand?
I said in my last newsletter that my
focus for January and February was to raise
funds to fund a bus to the St. Patrick’s Day
Parade on March 16, 2019, which we did. I
am proud to say that the bus will be fully
funded and the cost will only be $20 per per-
son, please see Brian Farrell for detail and to
reserve a seat.
Again, I would like to congratulate
John Nolan on being named the 2019 man of
the year. Also, congratulations to Pat Bishop
on being the 2019 lady of the year. Both are
well deserving of this honor. Please come
out on March 8th (Friday evening at 7pm) to
see them get there awards. Please see Ron
Ade for details.
Thank you to everyone who came
out and supported our last two events at
Hibernian Hall, especially those who helped
me in making both nights a lot of fun and
financially viable. In no order, for they know
what they did: Ken Ferguson, Larry McGov-
ern, Maryellen Keeley, Ed Ryan and Steve
Keeley, and everyone else I am unfortunately
forgetting about right now.
Lastly, please consider celebrating
your Irish heritage and march in at least one
parade this year. I have found the first step
is the hardest and they are all downhill after
that. The Hall will be open on St. Patrick’s
Day at 3-4pm, please come down and see
your Hibernian family. Also if you see Jim
McCann thank him for redoing the floors, I
hear you can see yourself in the reflections.
Yours in our motto,
Ed McGlade
Happy St. Patrick’s Day

P a g e 3 S t a r s & S h a m r o c k s “In God We Trust”
At last night’s meeting, President Ed McGlade reminded me that my column was due. Not to worry as I already had a great amount of notes on my topic – “The Round Towers of Ireland”! I just spent two hours in a vain attempt to locate said file --- without success --- hence that column has been placed on “hold” for the future. Since the beginning of Lent is just around the cor-ner, here are some thoughts for all to consider as we “celebrate” the 40 days of Lent. For all the negative things we have to say to ourselves,
God has a positive answer for it.
You say, “It’s impossible.” God says: “All things are possible”. (Luke 18:27) You say, “I’m too tired.” God says: “I will give you rest”. (Matt 11:28) You say, “Nobody really loves me.” God says: “I love you”. (John 3:16,John 13:34) You say, “I can’t go on.” God says: “My grace is sufficient.” (II Cor. 12:9 – Ps 91:15) You say, “I can’t figure things out.” God says: “I will direct your steps.” (Proverbs 3” 5-6)
You say, “I can’t do it.” God says: “You can do all things in Me.” (Phil 4:13)
You say, “It’s not worth it.”
“It will be worth it.” (Romans 8:28) You say, “I can’t forgive myself.” God says: “I will forgive you.” (1 John 1:9 – Romans 8:1)
You say, “I’m afraid.” God says: “I have not given you a spirit of fear.” (II Tim. 1:7)
You say, “I don’t have enough faith.” God says, “I’ve given everyone a measure of faith.” (Romans 12:3) You say, “I’m not smart enough.” God says: “I’ll give you wisdom.” (1 Cor 1:30) You say, “I feel all alone.” God says: “I will never leave you or forsake you.” (Heb. 13:5).
There are some weeks (and days) that we ALL feel our hearts are burning.
Peace to all,
Deacon Frank

The March for Life was January 18, 2019 in Washington, D.C. The trip was a huge success. Thanks to all who attended and those who supported the Hibernian Bus. See you next year.
The bus stopped at the Guinness Brewery on the way back. Which was a great time.
Good Friday is the next vigil. Please pray for the unborn.

Back Home in Derry
The song made famous by the great Christy Moore was written
by Bobby Sands while in prison. On March 1, 1981, Bobby
Sands began his 66 day hunger strike.
In 1803 we sailed out to sea
Out from the sweet town of Derry
For Australia bound if we didn't all drown
And the marks of our fetters we carried.
In the rusty iron chains we sighed for our wains
As our good wives we left in sorrow.
As the mainsails unfurled our curses we hurled
On the English and thoughts of tomorrow.
CHORUS
Oh Oh Oh Oh I wish I was back home in Derry.
Oh Oh Oh Oh I wish I was back home in Derry.
I cursed them to hell as our bow rode the swell.
Our ship danced like a moth in the firelights.
White horses rode high as the devil passed by
Taking souls to Hades by twilight.
Five weeks out to sea we were now forty-three
Our comrades we buried each morning.
In our own slime we were lost in a time.
Endless night without dawning. CHORUS
Van Dieman's land is a hell for a man
To live out his life in slavery.
When the climate is raw and the gun makes the law.
Neither wind nor rain cares for bravery.
Twenty years have gone by and I've ended me bond
And comrades' ghosts are behind me.
A rebel I came and I'II die the same.
On the cold winds of night you will find me CHORUS
Robert Gerard Sands (Irish: Roibeárd Gearóid Ó Seachnasaigh; 9 March 1954 – 5 May 1981) was a member of the Provisional Irish Republican Army who died on hunger strike while impris-oned at HM Prison Maze after being sentenced for firearms possession. He was the leader of the 1981 hunger strike in which Irish re-publican prisoners protested against the removal of Special Category Status. During Sands's strike, he was elected to the British Parliament as an Anti H-Block candidate. His death and those of nine other hunger strikers was followed by a new surge of Provisional IRA recruitment and activity. International media coverage brought attention to the hunger strikers, and the Republican movement in general, attracting both praise and criticism.
By 1966, sectarian violence in Rathcoole, along with the rest of Belfast, had considerably worsened, and the minority Catholic population there found itself under siege. Despite always hav-ing had Protestant friends, Sands suddenly found that none of them would even speak to him, and he quickly learned to asso-ciate only with Catholics. He left school in 1969 at age 15, and enrolled in Newtownabbey Technical College, beginning an apprenticeship as a coach build-er at Alexander's Coach Works in 1970. He worked there for less than a year, enduring constant harassment from his Protestant co-workers, which according to several co-workers he ignored completely, as he wished to learn a meaningful trade. He was eventually confronted after leaving his shift in January 1971 by a number of his coworkers wearing the arm-bands of the local Ulster loyalist tartan gang. He was held at gunpoint and told that Alexander's was off-limits to "Fenian scum" and to never come back if he valued his life. He later said that this event was the point at which he decided that militancy was the only solution.

Triquetra
The triquetra is often found in insular art, most notably metal
work and in illuminated manuscripts like the Book of Kells. It is
also found in similar artwork on Celtic crosses and slabs from
the early Christian period. The fact that the triquetra rarely
stood alone in medieval Celtic art has cast reasonable doubt on
its use as a pri- mary symbol of belief.
In manuscripts it is used primarily as a
space filler or ornament in much
more complex compositions, and in
knotwork panels it is a design motif inte-
grated with oth- er design elements.
This widely recognised knot has been used as a singular symbol
for the past two centuries by Celtic Christians, pagans and ag-
nostics as a sign of special things and people that are threefold.
Sometimes with an added circle in or around the three lobes.
Also known as a "trinity knot" when parallel doubled-lines are in
the graph, the design is used as a religious symbol adapted from
ancient Pagan Celtic images by Christiani-
ty. It is similar to Odin's symbol, the
valknut.
