The Ford Mustang has added yet another award to its trophy case – Women’s Performance Car of the Year 2016. Up against a field of 294 com- petitors, Mustang emerged as the top performance car in the Women’s World Car of the Year awards, said Ford spokesman Dan Jones. The awards are determined by 17 judges across 14 countries – the only vehicle honors in the world granted by a panel made up entirely of women. Mustang’s closest contender was the critically acclaimed Ford Focus RS, with just one point separating the two, Jones said. The 2016 Mustang was creat- ed, in part, Jones said, by a group of women. They included Susan Lampinen, Ford Chief Color and Materials designer, Melanie Banker, Ford Mustang Marketing manager, Michele Lubin Henning, Ford Vehicle Integration supervi- sor, and Marcy Fisher, Ford Vehi- cle Line director. The judges posted opinions about the Mustang on the Women’s World Car of the Year Facebook page. “Ford Mustang is surprisingly loved by women who are after a sexy, sporty, masculine car that turns heads,” said Juliet Potter, Women’s World Car of the Year jury member from Australia. “Combining the car’s silver- screen celebrity status with real- life practicality, Mustang screams, ‘I am in control!’ and de- livers the same behind the wheel with above-average grip and sus- pension. The Detroit automaker now operates 152 global facilities that recycle, reuse or convert to ener- gy all waste from daily opera- tions. These 52 non-manufacturing sites and 100 manufacturing sites contribute to GM’s top and bot- tom lines by driving efficiencies, generating revenue and saving money, Price said. “We are committed to manu- facturing cars and trucks for our customers in a safe and responsi- ble way,” said Alicia Boler-Davis, GM executive vice president, Global Manufacturing. “While we continue to increase the reuse of byproducts, our vision is to eliminate waste by applying the most advanced manufacturing processes and technologies in our plants globally.” Whether it’s recycling Flint water bottles into engine cover insulation or turning trashed tires from the Mississippi River into air-deflecting baffles, the company is working together with its suppliers to advance a more circular economy where materials are kept in use, Boler- Davis said. troit bureau of Motor Trend maga-zine, said that 2016 was the yearthat driver assistance, some-times referred to as autonomoustechnology, became a reality.“This tech really took off in
2016,” Priddle said. “Companiesreally invested in ride safety andthat technology has becomestandard in a lot of vehicles. Talkbecame reality.”Ford, for instance, in January
announced that the 2017 Es-cape’s available features wouldinclude:• Adaptive Cruise Control with
Collision Warning and Brake Sup-port: Sensors detect when Es-cape is approaching a slow-mov-ing vehicle and adjusts cruisecontrol accordingly;• Enhanced Active Park As-
sist: Provides automatic steeringassistance to park the vehicle ina parallel or perpendicular park-ing spot, and pull out from tightparallel parking spots;• Lane-Keeping System: The
system includes lane-keeping as-sist, which alerts drivers whenthey drift unintentionally fromtheir lane, and lane-keep aid,which provides steering assis-tance to guide an unintentionallydrifting vehicle back in its lane;• Driver Alert System: Using
data from the lane-keeping sys-tem, Driver Alert detects signs offatigued driving and provides awarning on the instrument clus-ter.In September, Ford accelerated
its autonomous vehicle researchat the new robotics lab at theUniversity of Michigan. As a re-sult of this, Ford became the firstcompany to co-locate in an aca-
demic building as its engineersworked side-by-side with U-M re-searchers.In early December, the state of
Michigan passed legislation thatgreatly increased the ability ofcompanies to test autonomousvehicles on public roads.The Associated Press wrote,
“companies can now test self-dri-ving cars on Michigan publicroads without a driver or steer-ing wheel under new laws thatcould push the state to the fore-front of autonomous vehicle de-velopment.“The package of bills signed
into law Dec. 9 comes with fewspecific state regulations andleaves many decisions up toautomakers and companies likeGoogle and Uber.“It also allows automakers and
tech companies to run autono-mous taxi services and permitstest parades of self-driving trac-tor-trailers as long as humans arein each truck. And they allow thesale of self-driving vehicles to thepublic once they are tested andcertified, according to the state.”Within days of that announce-
ment, GM declared that the com-pany would be testing autono-mous vehicles on public roads.And Fiat Chrysler announced
that the company had completedbuilding 100 Hybrid Pacificasmeant to be outfitted with fullyself-driving technology being de-veloped by Waymo (formerlyknown as the Google Self-DrivingCar Project). These vehicles willjoin Waymo’s self-driving fleet in2017.Other issues rolled over into
2016 from 2015. The Volkswagendiesel emission scandal contin-ued to make news. In Septemberof 2015, the company admitted tomaking and installing “defeat” de-vices designed to fool emissiontests.In September, James Robert
Liang, a VW engineer whoworked in Oxnard, Calif., admit-ted as part of a plea deal with theJustice Department that the de-feat device was purposely in-stalled in VW diesels sold in theUnited States.In October, a federal judge
approved a final settlement thatrequired VW to offer to buy backabout 475,000 vehicles. The buy-back values ranged from $12,000to $44,000. The company alsoagreed to pay $2.7 billion in envi-ronmental mitigation fees andanother $2 billion for clean emis-sions infrastructure.The Takata airbag scandal also
continued in 2016. The companymakes airbags for most OEMsand, beginning in 2013, compa-nies began recalling vehicleswith Takata airbags because,under certain circumstances,airbags could deploy with somuch force that flying debriscould injure or even kill driversand passengers.In May of 2016, the National
Highway Traffic Safety Adminis-tration (NHTSA) initiated a recallcampaign affecting about 35 to40 million vehicles.
Despite these efforts, a trucktransporting Takata airbag partswas involved in a crash in Que-mado, Texas, in August. Thecrash caused the cargo to ex-plode, destroying a house andkilling a woman inside.

DETROIT (AP) – U.S. safetyregulators are reviewing eightcomplaints that the engines intiny Smart Fortwo cars can catchfire.The investigation by the
National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration covers about43,000 of the two-seat cars fromthe 2008 and 2009 model years.The agency says in documents
posted Dec. 20 that in six cases,owners saw smoke, the checkengine light, or heard an unusualnoise before seeing flames. Theother two fires weren’t observeduntil the cars were stopped. Alleight owners told the agencythat flames rapidly engulfed thecars. No injuries have been re-ported.In one of the complaints, the
owner of a 2008 Fortwo fromDallas told NHTSA that he hearda loud pop from the rear enginecompartment while driving onthe North Dallas Tollway on Oct.12. The owner pulled over tocheck the noise and saw flamescoming from the engine.

where from one to threeweeks dueto the ongoing U.S. market shift to-ward trucks and SUVs, spokes-woman Dayna Hart said Dec. 19.Just over 10,000 workers will beidled.The company’s Detroit-Ham-
tramck factory and Fairfax As-sembly plant in Kansas City,Kan., each will be shut down forthree weeks, while a plant inLansing, will be down for twoweeks. Factories in Lordstown,Ohio, and Bowling Green, Ky.,each will be idled for one week.The factories make most cars
in the General Motors lineup in-cluding the Chevrolet Cruze, Ca-maro, Corvette, Malibu, Volt andImpala; the Cadillac CT6, CTSand ATS; and the Buick Lacrosse.At the current sales pace, GM
dealers have enough Malibus tolast for 84 days and enoughCamaros to last for 177 days,according to Ward’s Automotive.Normally, automakers like tohave a 60-day supply on lots.Last month, trucks and SUVs

The Pacifica is the lone mini-van among vehicles to earn a2017 Top Safety Pick+ (TSP+) rat-ing from the Insurance Institutefor Highway Safety (IIHS), saidFiat Chrysler spokesman EricMayne.
The Dec. 8 announcement bythe IIHS reprises the ChryslerPacifica’s 2016 TSP+ designation,and complements the five-staroverall safety rating the Pacificaachieved in testing by the U.S.National Highway Traffic SafetyAdministration.
“Every safety feature is rele-vant to every buyer,” Maynesaid, “but especially so for mini-van buyers, and recognition likethis will become an importantbuying tool for consumers look-ing for a vehicle for their fami-lies.”
“With more than 100 availablesafety and security features,everything from Forward Colli-sion Warning to a 360-degree Sur-round View Camera to the abilityto parallel park itself,” said TimKuniskis, head of Passenger CarBrands – FCA North America,“the all-new 2017 Chrysler Pacifi-ca is designed and built to checkthe box on key attributes manyfamilies value above all others –safety and security.”
TSP+ status is contingent onachieving ratings of “good” infive IIHS crashworthiness evalua-tions. The Chrysler Pacificaachieves “good” – the highestpossible rating – in each. Thetests simulate:
• A side impact with a largeSUV or pickup truck;
• A moderate-offset frontal im-pact;
• A small-offset frontal impact;• Roof-deformation consistent
with a rollover; and a rear colli-sion capable of inducingwhiplash.
High-strength steel accountsfor 72 percent of the Pacifica’sbody structure, 38 percent ofwhich is Advanced High-StrengthSteel (AHSS). Such materialchoice was a key contributor tothe new minivan’s crashworthi-ness, and advanced engineeringcontributed further.
Using an in-house processcalled Rapid Concept Develop-ment (RCD), FCA US engineersemployed high-powered comput-ers to identify optimal body-structure design. The computershelp simulate vehicle perform-ance and pinpoint strategies thatbest accommodate occupantprotection.
In certain frontal impacts,these strategies include dividingcrash energy between multiplecomponents, such as frame railsand the vehicle’s engine cradle.
While the new Pacifica acesthe required crash tests, the bestsafety features are those thathelp drivers avoid collisions. TheChrysler Pacifica’s AutomaticEmergency Braking (AEB) sys-tem earns a rating of “superior,”the highest possible grade theIIHS awards for this technologyand another prerequisite toachieve TSP+ status.
The Pacifica’s system is calledForward Collision Warning-Plus.It features sensor-fusion technol-ogy, which combines the particu-lar attributes of radar sensorsand cameras for greater preci-sion.
The system only respondswhen camera and radar agreethat a frontal impact appears im-minent.
