Twenty-six-year-old Christy Williams of La-Belle admitted to Hendry County deputies that she stabbed her boyfriend the night of Sept. 29 and has been charged with willful premeditat-ed homicide. The victim, 31-year-old Donald Ash Harris, had been stabbed once in the left chest.

According to sheriff ’s reports, deputies re-sponded to a hysterical 911 call placed at 10:45 p.m. by Ms. Williams at 3609 SR 29S, trailer 1. In it she reportedly said she had stabbed her boyfriend and he wasn’t breathing. She also said it was an accident.

Sgt. William Griffi n reported that he arrived at the scene about 11:40 p.m. and met Deputy

C. McClelland and Sgt. G. Elver there. EMS per-sonnel had already been there and left.

The report indicates that the victim was ly-ing face up inside a screen door, and at the base of steps leading into the single wide trailer. He had one horizontal stab wound in the left chest about a half inch wide.

The victim was wearing gray sweat pants, a blue T-shirt with brown work-type boots and dark socks. There was a small amount of blood spatter on the concrete by the body.

Inside the trailer, there was a knife with a black handle and serrated edge on a table by the TV. It was about eight inches long with red liquid adhering to it.

The three adults were inside the trailer were each interviewed by offi cers. Melissa Barrett, 45, Lloyd Crig, 62, and Joseph Coefi eld, 71.

Offi cers were told that the victim was drunk, loud and aggressive; that he and Ms. Williams had had previous altercations. Reportedly, none of them heard or saw what happened that night.

Ms. Williams told offi cers that he had her pinned on the bed and when she got free she went to the table and picked up the knife Mr. Harris had left there earlier. He had been us-ing it to try to remove a wooden lock from the door.

She told offi cers she took the knife to scare him away and protect herself. She grabbed the knife, turned toward him as he approached and lunged forward. She also told them he had been arrested twice previously for domes-tic violence.

Today, Thursday, Oct. 6, Florida Department of Transportation staff will hold a workshop from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at LaBelle Civic Center seeking public input into planning access management for the up-coming four-laning of SR 80.

The workship includes the next portion of SR 80 to be four-laned - west of LaBelle from Birchwood Parkway to Dalton Lane.

The department is currently in the process of designing the proj-ect and placing access points and median openings for side streets and so on.

The PD&E was done in 2005. Now it’s time to take a harder look at the particulars of that section of highway and staff wants to hear the community’s thoughts about where access points will be most appropriate.

At their September 27 meeting, the Hendry County Board of County Commissioners de-cided to stop chasing the FEMA “rabbit hole” funding to replace the sub-offi ce in Clewiston. Since 2005, when Hurricane Wilma made the old sub-offi ce unusable, the county has rent-ed space at the old K-Mart Plaza on US 27 to house county offi cials on the eastern side of the county. The board is taking up a health department offer to share its facility at 1100 S. Olympia in Clewiston.

is coming up with a plan to partition the fa-cility in half to accommodate both the county offi ces and the health department. The com-mittee feels there should be enough space for all the county offi ces except the sheriff ’s offi ce. The sheriff ’s offi ce is expected to relocate to the old health department at 100 E. El Paso in Clewiston.

County offi ces in LaBelle have also moved. The board transferred $595,000 from the disaster fund to purchase the old Alico headquarters on Main Street. This will save some $300,000 per year the county has been spending to lease offi ces at the Court-house Square.

New radio systemThe county will use money from its fi ne

and forfeiture fund, MSBU and general fund to pay $287,549 for a new 800 MHz radio system required by the state for emergency transmissions. First comes a $29,000 down payment, but the board also plans to apply for grants and appropriations.

East Rec DistrictThe City of Clewiston asked the county to

share costs of the East Hendry County Rec District. Clewiston Mayor Rick Miller told the commissioners that the rec district facilities are mainly used by county residents and asked for a $50,000 county contribution to the district’s bottom line. The request was approved, however, commissioners also want the district to “fi x” its fi nances by next year. The district is considering using the

Western Rec District as a model for its re-structuring.

A workshop has been scheduled to discuss the possibilities Nov. 8 at 4 p.m. at Clewiston City Hall.

The next regular meeting will be held at the Pioneer Community Center Tuesday, Oct. 11, 5 p.m.

1 announced she is taking a leave of ab-sence until her throat mends. She continues to struggle with her voice for the past six months after an operation. She said she will come back for a major issue, if necessary.

A special exception was granted to put in a horticulture recycling site at 7261 SR 80W. The facility was authorized by Florida Department of Environmental Protection in 2008, however the county never approved it. Owner Matt Miller said former County Plan-ning Director Lynne Rodriguez told him the operation was permissible in 2005. How-ever, no records could be found from any meeting. The owner will have to complete an application for the special exception and site improvement plan as well as pay adver-tising costs.

Traffi c approaching SR 80 from side streets may only make right onto SR 80. Vehicles may not cross SR 80 on that side street and go straight to the other side.

U turns may be executed at either full median or directional access points.

It is unclear when construction will com-mence, but it should take about a year to complete once begun.

FDOT hopes to see property owners and any interested members of the community at this meeting. Letters have been sent to property owners concerning this meeting.

There will be no formal presentation at this meeting, just an open house providing one-on-one information from FDOT staff.

Dalton Lane will be the terminus of this

section of the four-laning project. The next section will be from Dalton Lane to Indian Hills.

FDOT spokesperson Debbie Tower re-minds everyone that four-laning will in-crease the capacity of SR 80, but safety con-cerns will require that access be somewhat limited.

The key is to balance safety with effi cient movement, she said.

Tickets are on sale now for the LaBelle Chamber of Commerce’s annual banquet Oct. 17.

The event will be held at the LaBelle Civic Center at 6:30 p.m. Hendry County Economic Development Council Director Gregg Gillman will be the speaker for the evening.

Make plans now to attend this annual event. Nominations, in the form of signed letters, are being accepted for Citizen of the Year until Oct. 9.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Sept.20, 2011)--- The United Way of Lee, Hendry and Glades has announced that 17 agencies in Lee, Hendry and Glades counties will receive $361,342 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs.

The United Way of Lee, Hendry and Glades manages the program and coordi-nates the distribution of the funds. A local board is charged with allocating the funds appropriated by Congress to expand the ca-pacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas. The local board determines how the funds awarded to this area are to be dis-tributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local human ser-vice agencies in the area. Some of the local agencies have already received their funds.

Cliff Smith, President of the United Way of Lee, Hendry and Glades stated, “The emergency food and shelter funds are be-ing put to work where they are needed the

most, and the administrative costs of getting the funds to agencies that actually provide emergency food and shelter is only 2 per-cent of the total received.

“These funds come to us at a time when the number of local citizens needing ser-vices has substantially increased because of high unemployment and serious economic problems in our community. The funds will help feed hungry people, fi ll food pantries and provide shelter to the men, women, and children who are hurting the most,” Smith continued.

More than 30 Democratic Party organiz-ers, elected offi cials and candidates gathered for a pot-luck dinner and election season kick-off meeting at the Indian Hills home of Ellen Hawk Geake, Chair of the Glades County Democrats. The September 29 event was the second joint meeting for the Hendry and Glades Counties Democratic Executive Committees.

Joe Thomas, Chair of the Hendry County Democrats, said that the two county po-litical groups would continue to rotate their monthly meetings between LaBelle, Clewis-ton and Moore Haven.

Explaining why the combined meetings, Thomas said, “Hendry and Glades County Democrats have a lot in common. We share many issues and organizing challenges. And it’s just a lot more fun to get together as a larger group in a more social setting. It

encourages more people to come out and meet one another.”

State party leaders Dee Dee Smith and Dave Dew attended to represent Florida Democratic Party Chairman Rod Smith.

Smith emphasized the need for Demo-crats to work enthusiastically to elect their candidates in the hard-fought political arena that is the American two-party system. But she reminded the group that both parties are citizens working for a better nation and there is no place for hostility between fellow Americans. Dew urged Hendry and Glades County Democrats to take a more active role by attending the Democratic Party state con-vention scheduled for October 28-30 at the Contemporary Resort in Walt Disney World. The Florida Department of Education Farmworker Jobs and Education Program (FJEP) is designed to pay for vocational education and training for seasonal and migrant farm workers and their family members. Funding is provided by the Depart-ment of Labor and is used to pay for tuition, books, fees, required materials and other costs associ-ated with attendance at programs sponsored by non-profi t agencies, local governments, school districts, technical centers and col-leges. To be eligible for the program you must be a US Citizen or a Registered Alien and have received wages from farm work within the last two years. Visa holders are not eligible.

To be screened for services, you should make an appointment to see the LaBelle area Facilitator, Maribel Perez at 863-612-9863. Maribel is bilingual and available in LaBelle on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays by appointment. Applicants should bring their identifi cation, along with proof of eligibility such as pay stubs, W-2s, 1099s or employment verifi cation letters. Family

members must also provide the same veri-fi cations as there are family income guide-lines for eligibility.

Maribel currently has 45 people receiv-ing services in Hendry County that are en-rolled in programs such as culinary arts, LPN, business management, early child-hood development and heavy equipment maintenance. If you are a farm worker, or a family member of a farm worker, and are interested in pursuing vocational training or GED completion, make an appointment today.

The seasonal and migrant community makes up about 3,000 to 4,000 local work-ers annually. Including their family mem-bers, this community could account for up to 23 percent of the entire County popu-lation. Most people in this community live below the poverty line and some depend on social assistance. Imagine the positive economic impact on the region if even a small portion of this community were helped towards economic self-suffi ciency, better pay and a stable employment future. Bring lawmaking back to citizens

Maybe it’s not the number of laws that get passed or the parties that are responsible for passing them, that is important.

Maybe lawmaking should be brought back to the citizens as opposed to having so-called “representatives” doing the bidding of special interests of themselves or of a few others.

When the recreation board convened recently, the audiences of both locations (LaBelle and Clewiston) were in unanimous agreement that the proposed tax increase would have more of a negative impact upon the citizens of Hendry County than the imag-ined benefi ts.

But both boards decided that the peo-ple’s interests and desires were not as wise as their own.

It’s understandable that if I were receiv-ing money or favors from such a program I might be tempted to sport that same special wisdom that the board members exhibited. But that would mean that I would have to ignore all those who represented the unem-ployed, poor or just fed-up.

Just maybe, we could pass a law that would buy hearing aids for all the board members and binoculars that would allow them to see past their own noses and fi gure out that these meetings are attended by citi-

zens who need responsive representatives and not governmental bullies.

There are enough bullies in the world al-ready. We don’t need them in government in such a position to threaten us by taking our homes if we don’t or can’t give them the gold they have such a fever for.

Now, they have increased the property tax, when other counties’ commissioners under similar circumstances have listened to their citizens and decided that this just might be a bad time to do so.

Maybe we should also buy a tv set or a newspaper subscription for the commis-sioners so they can keep up with the rest of the world.

Aren’t they able to realize that if the other counties who have less unemployment than we do, have given their citizens a break, maybe our commissioners who have the most unemployed in the entire state can do likewise?

Please help out a county commissioner by sending them a hearing aid, binoculars, paper subscription or tv (I think we might be pressing our luck if we sent them a book on “Logic”).

And if that fails, maybe we can help them out at election time, if you get my drift.

ribbons around town to help with the edu-cation about breast cancer and its prevention. Octo-ber is recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 190,000 new cases of breast cancer were report-ed nationwide in 2006 and more than 41,000 women died from the disease. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among adult women in the United States and the second leading cause of cancer

death among women. It is estimated that one of every eight

adult women will get breast cancer in her lifetime.

Breast cancer is an uncontrolled growth of breast cells. The growth becomes un-controllable without treatment, ultimately resulting in the formation of a tumor. A tu-mor can be either benign (noncancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Additionally, a cancer growth can also be considered “non-invasive,” which means that it is confi ned to the infected area or “invasive,” which means that it has spread to surrounding breast tis-sue. This can determine the severity of dis-ease upon detection.

Breast cancer can be preventable with early detection.

It is recommended that all women from the ages 50-74 should have a mammogram every two years, and women between the ages of 40-50 years should talk with their health care provider about when to start screening. It may be necessary for you to have earlier screening or more frequent screening if you have a family history of breast cancer. Breast cancer risk is linked to age, ethnicity and family history of disease.

The risk of cancer increases with age. Research has shown that although white women are more likely to get breast can-cer, African American women are the most likely to die of it. Minority women are most likely to have advanced breast cancer when the cancer is fi rst discovered. Studies have shown that women of other ethnic back-

Gathering of Christian Men plan open rodeo

Pumpkin Patch MinistryThe Pumpkin Patch Ministry of First Bap-

The board of directors of the Educa-tion Center of Southwest Florida held their monthly business and biennial strategic planning meetings in September. The stra-tegic planning meeting was facilitated by Gregg Gillman, Hendry County Economic Development director. Directors confi rmed their commitment to keep the Education Center operating and build the campus on Helms Road. At the facilitator’s direction the board was encouraged to enhance the ex-isting resources and focus on the ECSWF’s mission and vision.

The board reviewed those businesses and agencies and continues to build those partnerships. The fi rst step identifi ed by the board was the need to improve public rela-tions and market the school’s mission to the community over the next two months. The Captain Hendry Dinner, scheduled for the evening of December 1, 2011, is the main fundraiser for the ed center and provides funding for day to day operations. Local support for that event is of paramount im-portance.

It always fascinates spectators to see the mass of humanity being launched as the gun fi res at a cross country meet. Envision if you can; the fi eld awash in multi-color splen-dor as each school proudly displays their uniform colors, as runners charge out from the starting line. It is an unbelievable burst of color and a feast for the eyes as a herd of runners rumble by. This is cross country racing.

Here at LHS we have two great coaches. In fact, last year’s varsity boys’ team went to the Florida State Cross Country Champion-ship under the tutelage of Head Coach Jef Frost.

That’s huge LaBelle, huge, for a small school of this size to go all the way. Coach Frost is now in his 17th year of coaching and teaching at LaBelle High School. The girls team is led by Coach Jenny McClain, who herself is a tremendous runner, as one of the varsity boy runners claimed “she is a beast to run with.” Coach McClain runs right alongside the varsity boys on all their long run days.

This year has shown a tremendous in-crease with the girls’ team participation. In fact, it is up over 200 percent as the running bug has hit the girls hard. Girls went from six runners in 2010 to 20 in 2011. Coach McClain believes that the “increase in team numbers could be attributed to the team going to the state championship last year.” The truth is Coach Frost has carefully created a culture of distance running at LHS. “It is a pleasure to coach all the great kids we have this year. It makes my fall season,” relays Frost.

Cross country training involves a lot more than just running. Weight training, stretch-ing, plyometrics, with core/abdominal work-outs (that use a small medicine ball) are all included in Coach Frost’s weekly work-out regimen. Bring in the “form running,” speed workouts, running the bleachers and charging up sandhills, you begin to get the picture of what cross country training is all about! Temporary soreness can be a distinct by-product from a Frost workout. New this year is also the early morning runs for the boys twice a week. Remember, by the end of cross country season the boys’ varsity will have logged almost four hundred miles.

On Thursday, Sept. 21, LHS won the cross country meet at Lake Placid High School. Hats off to senior Ashley Golemme and Junior Erick Medina as our top fi nishers. Then again on October 1 Erick Medina fi n-ished fi rst overall in the meet at Mariner High School with a time of 16:46. With much of the season to come things are going to get harder yet, said Coach Frost. One highlight

of the year will be LaBelle running in the Walt Disney World Invitational this month, where the competition will prove to be ex-tremely tough with teams from around the country participating.

If you would like to experience the thrill of cross country for yourself, the 17th an-nual Caloosa Chase 5k Run will be held on Saturday, October 22, at 8 a.m. This is an “open” race for anyone from the com-munity. Runners are known to come all the way from Ft. Myers to run this event. This is a fund raiser for the cross country team here at the high school and all registered runners will receive a beautiful tee-shirt!

If history is any indica-tor, the Caloosa Chase 5k often signals one of the very fi rst cool mornings of the year. Let’s hear it for great running weather yet to come.

The LaBelle Boys Golf Team won the in-augural Hendry/Glades County Champion-ship at Clewiston Country Club on Septem-ber 27.

The team was led by Nick Wegscheid’s 49, Mark Sloan and Ronnie Burton each shot 50 and the scoring was rounded out with Ander Hernandez’s 53. Alton Burton and Jerrod Miller also posted a 62 and 63, respectively.

The team beat Ahfachkee 235, Clewiston 240 and Moore Haven 252. This will become an annual event and the team hopes to hold on to the title for a while.

The golf team is now 8-4 and working to get better. This year we have 12 players forming one of the biggest teams ever. Team Members are:

Varsity: Nick Wegscheid, Alton Burton, Mark Sloan, Ander Hernandez, Ronnie Bur-ton and Jarred Miller.

A ‘tip of the hat’ to the LHS cross country teamThe LaBelle Cowboys fell to district

foe Dunbar 34-13 this past Friday. While playing tough for most of the game the Cowboys made too many mistakes and al-lowed too many big plays. The Tigers were fueled by an 84-yard scoring pass on the fi rst play of the game and they continued to attack the Cowboys through the air en route to their win.

The Cowboys struggled with errant punt snaps and one blocked punt that gave Dunbar great fi eld position.

Some highlights for the Cowboys were David Antunez’s season long fi eld goal (42 yards) and kick return (90 yards). Also Noel

Gutierrez intercepted an option pitch and raced 63 yards to set up Antunez’s second fi eld goal. The Cowboys’ touchdown was scored by Devante Ray on an 8-yard pass from Tyler O’Ferrell after Antunez’s long kick return.

The Cowboys travel to Buckingham fi eld in Riverdale to face Gateway Charter School this Thursday at 7:30 pm. Come out and support the Cowboys.

The JV Cowboys lost to Lemon Bay at home last Thursday and are in the middle of their bye week as they prepare to return to the fi eld October 13 at 7:00 p.m. as they take on the Clewiston Tigers at home.

I guess we’re getting used to it. Anyway, I planted my usual two rows of candy corn. It never produces any candy corn bushes but every year I bravely try.

Y’all know I was born on Hal-loween and my fi rst tooth looked

identically like a candy corn. I truly love them.

To light candles deep in a jar use a piece of uncooked spa-

ghetti or for a birthday cake with a lot of can-dles, let’s say 76 or so, do the same. Otherwise you

use up a whole book of matches.

HHENDRY COUNTY SCHOOL BOARDPupil Progression: Promotion/Retention

No student may be assigned to a grade level based solely on age or other factors that constitute social promotion. Florida Statute 1008.25 requires that anystudent who exhibits a substantial deficiency in reading, based upon locally determined or statewide assessments conducted in kindergarten, grade 1, grade 2,or grade 3 must be given intensive reading instruction immediately following the identification of the reading deficiency. The student's reading proficiency mustbe reassessed by locally determined assessments, or through teacher observations at the beginning of the grade following the intensive reading instruction. Thestudent must continue to be provided with intensive reading instruction until the reading deficiency is remedied.

If a student's reading deficiency is not remedied by the end of grade 3, as demonstrated by scoring at Level 2 or higher on the statewide assessment test inreading for grade 3, the student must be retained.

The parent of any student who exhibits a substantial deficiency in reading must be notified in writing of the following:1. That his/her child has been identified as having a substantial deficiency in reading.2. A description of the current services that are provided to the child.3. A description of the proposed supplemental instructional services and supports that will be provided to the child that are designed to remediate

the identified area of reading deficiency.4. That if the child's reading deficiency is not remedied by the end of grade 3, the child must be retained unless he/she is exempt from mandatory

retention for good cause.5. Strategies for parents to use in helping their child succeed in reading proficiency.6. That the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) is not the sole determiner of promotion and that additional evaluations, portfolio

reviews, and assessments are available to the child to assist parents and the school district in knowing when a child is reading at or above grade level and ready for grade promotion.

7. The districts criteria and policies for mid-year promotion.8. Each school district shall provide written notification to the parent of any student, who is retained because his/her reading deficiency is not remedied

by the end of third grade, that his/her child has not met the proficiency level required for promotion, and the reasons the child is not eligible for a good cause exemption as provided by Florida law. The notification must include a description of proposed interventions and support that will be provided to the child to remediate the identified areas of reading deficiency.

Successful Progression for Retained ReadersThe 2004 Legislature amended section 1008.25, Florida Statutes, to create a new paragraph (7) that provides that all students who are retained in third grademust be provided intensive interventions in reading to ameliorate the students' reading deficiency, as identified by a valid and reliable diagnostic assessment.This intensive intervention must include effective instructional strategies, participation in the school district's summer reading camp, and appropriate teachingmethodologies necessary to assist those students in becoming successful readers, able to read at or above grade level, and ready for promotion to the next grade.

This section also requires each school district to establish at each school, where applicable, an Intensive Acceleration Class for retained third grade studentswho subsequently score at Level 1 on the reading portion of the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT). The focus of this class shall be to increasea child's reading level at least two grade levels in one year. The school is required to report the following:

Mid-Year PromotionAccording to provisions in the Hendry County School District Pupil Progression Plan, students who were retained the previous year may be considered formid-year promotion provided the student has demonstrated the ability to read at grade level and shows mastery of the state standards for the grade level inwhich he/she was retained. The student must have the skills necessary to successfully function at the grade level to which he/she is being promoted mid-year.

Good Cause Exemption from Mandatory RetentionThe Hendry County School Board may only exempt students from mandatory retention for good cause as stated in Florida Statute 1008.25. According tothis statute, good cause exemptions shall be limited to the following:1. Limited English proficient students who have had less than two years of instruction in an English for Speakers of Other Languages Program.2. Students with disabilities whose individual education plan indicates that participation in the statewide assessment program is not appropriate,

consistent with the requirements of State Board of Education rule.3. Students who demonstrate an acceptable level of performance on all alternative standardized reading assessment approved by the State Board

of Education.4. Students who demonstrate, through a student portfolio, that he/she is reading on grade level as evidenced by demonstration of mastery of the

Help Nature Park

The Hendry/LaBelle Recreation Board and area volunteers would like to invite community organizations, youth groups and individuals to help for 1–2 hours at the LaBelle Nature Park. Volunteers will be re-moving vines from the front fence area and removing limbs from trails.

Mark your calendar for Saturday October 8 from 8-10 a.m. Hats, gloves, long pants, long sleeved shirts, sturdy shoes and insect repellant are recommended. Learn about natural wondersThe Hendry-Glades Audubon is host-

ing a program at the Clewiston Museum on Monday, October 10, at 7 p.m. Elston Chavarria will be featured as guest speaker. Mr. Chavarria holds a degree in forestry and worked for several years doing reforestation in the northwest.

During the last 12 years he has been ex-ploring the natural wonders of Central and South America (Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama and Brazil), becoming very knowledgeable on the lo-cal geography, wildlife and culture of these many countries.

In 2006, Mr. Chavarria started the Aven-turas Naturales (Natural Adventures) com-pany, which focuses most of its tours in countries where eco-tourism is still in its infancy.

The philosophy of his company is sim-ple: explore and enjoy nature, while leaving it as undisturbed as possible.

The company is proud of its “Give Back” program, which donates a portion of all trips to local, national or international envi-ronmental organizations.

Mr. Chavarria enjoys sharing his experi-ences and wealth of knowledge with audi-ences.

Tales of exotic places and beautiful wild-life makes for an informative and entertain-ing presentation, so make plans to come and spend an enjoyable evening at the Clewiston Museum. The Hendry Glades Audubon program and refreshments are free to the public.

known for his many years cooking at the Log Cabin Bar-B-Q. He has a brain tumor and has not been able to work since Janu-ary. There will be a spaghetti dinner Oct. 14 at Barron Park from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. to help with expenses - only $6.

Sit! Stay! Heel!Thanks to such a positive response, Ca-

loosa Humane Society is offering another six-week dog training program! Classes are on Mondays from 6:30-7:30 p.m. for $100. We will offer basic obedience skills like sit, stay, heal, no jumping, etc. Advanced classes will be offered to the graduates of the Basic Training Classes. There will be separate classes for puppies and adult dogs. Proof of rabies (dogs over four months) and DHPPC vaccination are required to be in the program.

Necessary vaccinations are offered at the shelter and can be done prior to the class for only $20 for both.

Bringing your four-legged friend will not only be fun but will be a great bonding ex-perience for you both! We do ask that the

The Royal Palm chapter of the Florida Nursery, Growers and Landscape Associa-tion (FNGLA) recently donated $1,000 to support Hendry County’s state winning 4-H Horticulture Identifi cation and Judging team as the team competes in the National con-test October 7-10 in San Diego, California. Comprised of Wolfgang Lynn, Andrew McA-voy, Harry Plamondon and Stephen Woos-ley, the team will be tested on 180 fruit and nuts, vegetables, ornamentals or fl owers found in all 50 states. In addition to identi-fying samples, contestants must complete a

written test which will factor into their over-all score.

FNGLA represents professionals across the state involved in the nursery, landscape and horticultural industry. This not-for-profi t association takes a stand on behalf of mem-bers representing its motto: “In Unity There is Strength.” In Southwest Florida, the Royal Palm FNGLA chapter stays involved in the community by raising funds for charitable organizations, offering scholarships and providing a common voice for the areas hor-ticulture industry.

Florida’s horticulture (“Green”) industry encompasses wholesale nursery and green-house producers, lawn and garden supplies, landscape design, installation and mainte-nance services as well as retail/garden cen-ters. Florida is a leader in the industry, sec-ond only to California in the United States. Nursery plants are one of the largest agri-cultural commodity groups in Florida, along

with fruits, vegetables and forest products.
