Science Congress - 2012 was jointly organised by Acharya Nagarjuna University and Andhra Pradesh Academy of Sciences (APAS) at Dr. H.H. Deichmann Auditorium, in the campus, from 14 th - 16 th November 2012. The main theme was “Innovations in Sciences, Technology and Mathematics”. The Congress was constituted by a state organizing committee and a local organising committee. Prof K. Viyyanna Rao, Vice-Chancellor, ANU and Dr. Ch. Mohan Rao, Director, CCMB, President APAS were the chief patrons. The programme was inaugurated formally by the honourable Chancellor Shri E. S. L. Narasimhan, the Governor of Andhra Pradesh. In his address he had emphasized the role of science in eradication of food scarcity and the revolutionary aspects of Biotechnology. Dr. V. K. Saraswat, Dept. of Defence Research and Development, Director General, DRDO, delivered a distinguished lecture on the role of biotechnology in defence research.

A. P. SCIENCE CONGRESS- 2012

The Fifth A.P. Science Congress - 2012 was jointly organised by Acharya Nagarjuna University andAndhra Pradesh Academy of Sciences (APAS) at Dr. H.H. Deichmann Auditorium, in the campus, from 14th -16th November 2012. The main theme was “Innovations in Sciences, Technology and Mathematics”. TheCongress was constituted by a state organizing committee and a local organising committee. Prof K. ViyyannaRao, Vice-Chancellor, ANU and Dr. Ch. Mohan Rao, Director, CCMB, President APAS were the chief patrons.The programme was inaugurated formally by the honourable Chancellor Shri E. S. L. Narasimhan, theGovernor of Andhra Pradesh. The Science Congress was started with the session ofChildren’s Science Congress. Children from various schoolsand colleges participated with excellent scientific exhibits inthe Dept. of Botany; Dr. Ch. Mohan Rao was the coordinatorfor the session. The Science Congress provided a goodplatform for high quality scientific paper and posterpresentations in the various Theme sessions viz., 1. Physical,Mathematical and Engineering Sciences; 2. ChemicalSciences including Pharmacy and Health Sciences; 3. LifeSciences including Agriculture Sciences; 4. Earth, Ocean

and Atmospheric Sciences. There were Special sessionson 1. Health, Nutrition and Behavioural Sciences2. Applications of Mathematics in Science and Technology.

All the sessions were headed by Sectional presidents,secretaries and coordinators who were eminentpersonalities comprising Scientists from variousorganisations, members of APAS and senior faculty of ANUat various seminar halls in the university. There were leadlectures given by Scientists of International and Nationalrepute. On 16th November, an exclusive session of Farmer-Scientist Meet was organized, headed by Dr. Ch. MohanRao, Director, CCMB, in which farmers from various districtsof the state participated and put forward their views,problems in farming. The scientists involved in the sessionsuggested remedial measures to overcome difficulties infarming. The Valedictory session was presided over by ProfK. Viyyanna Rao, Vice-Chancellor, ANU, while Prof Y. P.Ramasubbaiah, Rector, ANU, Prof R. R. L. Kantam,Registrar, ANU, were the Guests of Honour, Principals ofcolleges of ANU campus participated in the session. Prizeswere distributed to children for the best exhibits and to thosewho won in debate and quiz competitions.

ANU COLLEGE OF PHARMACEUTICAL SCIENCES

An Interdisciplinary Global Seminar on Exploring theCultural & Literary Nationalism of Fourth World (Natives/Aboriginals/ Dalits) sponsored by UGC & APSCHE wasconducted by the Dept. of English, ANU, during December14-16, 2012. The Chief Guest for the Inaugural functionwas Prof. Sunaina Singh, the Vice- Chancellor, English &Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad. The foreigndelegates who attended the seminar were Prof. Lee Maracle(Canada), Prof. Jo-Ann Episkenew (Canada), Prof. RobertMasterson (US), Prof. Jay Hansford C. Vest (US), Prof.

ANU College of Pharmaceutical Sciences organizeda UGC sponsored National Seminar on 9th & 10th November2012 on the theme Innovative Research andDevelopment in Pharmaceutical Sciences- CurrentScenario and New Horizons. The inaugural function waspresided over by Prof. K. Viyyanna Rao, Vice-Chancellor.Sri G. Palleswara Rao, (Vice-President, Hetero Labs Ltd.)was the Chief Guest, while Prof. R.R.L. Kantam was theGuest of Honour, and Prof. A. Prameela Rani, the Principalof the college was the Seminar Director. The resourcepersons were Sri Y. Ramalingeswara Rao, ProjectManager, Novartis Ltd., Sri G.Venkata Ramana, Seniorscientist-II, FR&D, Derrigo Laboratories, Dr. R. NageswaraRao, Chief Scientist, Analytical Chemistry Division, IICT, SriN.Nagesh, Associate Director, R&D, Dr.Reddy’sLaboratories Ltd, Dr.K.Venu Gopal, Deputy Manager,Analytical Research Division, Mylan laboratories Ltd. Around700 members belonging to 30 different colleges participatedin the sessions. Around 40 oral presentations related to thefocal theme were made by the participants. Nearly 400poster presentations were made belonging to the areas ofPharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Pharmacology,Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharamacognosy,

Pharmaceutical Biotechnology and Clinical Pharmacy. TheValedictory function was presided over by Prof.Y.P.RamaSubbaiah. Prof. K.P.R. Chowdary, Former Principal,A.U.College of Pharmaceutical Sciences was the ChiefGuest and Sri A. Chandra Sekhara Rao, Deputy DrugsController, CDSCO was the Guest of Honour. Prizes wereawarded for the best two presentations in each category.

DEPARTMENT OF BIO-CHEMISTRYDEPARTMENT OF RURAL DEVELOPMENT

The Department of Rural Development, ANUorganized a National Seminar on Voluntary Action inIndia: Problems and Prospects during December 10th-11th, 2012. In this seminar around 77 participants fromdifferent parts of the country like Andhra Pradesh,Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Odissa, and Andaman andNicobar had participated and presented their papers. ANUVice-Chancellor presided over the inaugural session whileformer Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court JusticeAmbati Lakshmana Rao delivered the keynote address.The director of the seminar Dr. V. Divyathejomurthypresented a report about the theme of the seminar. Guestsof Honour like Prof. K.R. Chowdary (Retd.), NG. RangaUniversity, Hyderabad, Prof. C. Narasimha Rao, formerHead and Director of Centre for Scientific and Socialism,Dr. P. Parvathi Devi, Director of Manasika VikasaKendram (NGO) conveyed their greetings in the inauguralsession. Prof. Y. P. Ramasubbaiah, Rector of theUniversity, distributed the certificates to the participants inthe concluding session of the seminar on 11th December,2012.

DEPARTMENT OF JOURNALISM ANDMASS COMMUNICATION

The Department of Journalism and MassCommunication, ANU, conducted a UGC sponsorednational seminar on Agricultural Innovations and MassMedia Approaches from 29.11.12 to 30.11.2012. In theinaugural function Prof. K. Nageswar, Osmania Universityand Member of AP Legislative Council, delivered thekeynote address. CEO and Chief Editor of HMTV,Hyderabad Dr.K.Srirama Chandra Murthy was theresource person. Prof. K. Viyyanna Rao, Vice-Chancellorwas the Chief Guest and Prof. T.Umamaheswara Rao,Principal, College of Arts, Commerce and Law presidedover the function. Many delegates from around the countryparticipated and presented papers. Professors from manyuniversities, other academia, research scholars, studentsand scientists from Agricultural universities, representativesfrom NGOs, progressive farmers participated in theseminar. Along with panel discussions, film screenings,farmers - scientists’ interaction were also held. ProfR.R.L.Kantam, Registrar, ANU was the chief guest for thevaledictory function which was presided over by Prof.T.Umamaheswara Rao, Principal, College of Arts,Commerce and Law.

Centre for Dr. Ambedkar Chair (Social Policy& Social Action) organized a National Seminar onDr. B. R. Ambedkar on Education during December3-4-2012. Prof. M. Nancharaiah, Dean, School ofSocial Sciences, University of Hyderabad, deliveredthe keynote address. Vice-Chancellor, Prof. K.V. Raopresided over the inaugural function, while theGuests of Honour were Prof. T. Uma Maheswara Rao,Principal, ANU College of Arts, Commerce & Law;Prof. Y. P. Ramasubbaiah, Rector; Prof. R.R.L.Kantam, Registrar and Prof. Z. Vishnuvardhan,OSD. Dr. S. Murali Mohan was the Director of theseminar.

The Department of Commerce & BusinessAdministration, ANU organized a UGC sponsored NationalSeminar on Emerging Trends in Commercial Bankingin India, on 12th & 13th, October 2012. Prof. NoorbashaAbdul, Head of the Department, was the Seminar Director.More than 100 participants presented papers on divergentsub- themes relating to the seminar topic. Prof. K. V. Rao,Vice-Chancellor of the University, inaugurated the seminaras the Chief Guest. In his inaugural address Prof. Raomaintained that the Commercial banking system in Indiahad got strong fundamentals because of which our bankswere safe and undisturbed even during the times of recentglobal crisis. Mr. H. Sambasiva Rao, AGM, Andhra Bank,delivered the keynote address. He said that the Bankshave spread their branch network and credit operations tothe rural areas during the post- nationalization period. Hewas hopeful that every person in the country would bebrought under the coverage banking under the financialinclusion scheme.

All the faculty members, including Prof. T.Umamaheswara Rao, Dean & Principal of Arts College,Prof. V. Chandra Sekhara Rao, Prof. N. Vijaya Ratnam,Joint Director of the Seminar and Chairman, BOS, Prof.SV Raju, Prof. GV Chalam, Prof. P. Koteswara Rao, Dr. R.Sivaram Prasad participated. The delegates presentedtheir papers in four technical sessions. Prof. P. Prem Chand

Babu, (SK University), Prof. D. Surya Chandra Rao (Krishna University), Prof. A. Lakshmana Swamy, MR. NSRedddy, (DGM Andhra Bank), Mr. A. Ramanathan, Prof.GN Brahmanandam, former Principal and Dean, actedas resource persons and the chairmen for various technicalsessions.

In the valedictory session the Registrar of theUniversity, Prof. RRL Kantam gave a message on thepresent situation and challenges of Banking in Indiatoday.

NATIONAL SEMINAR ON EMERGING TRENDS IN COMMERCIALBANKING IN INDIA

In view of the drastic downfall in the U.G. admissionsfor the past 5 years, the University organized a Workshop

on Restructuring of Undergraduate Courses /Combinations on 07-12-2012 on the A.N.U. Training classes were conducted to the non-teachingstaff working in administrative offices to train them forimproving quality in implementation of Telugu in officialcorrespondance. Accordingly, the training classes wereinaugurated by hon’ble Sri Mandali Buddha Prasad,Chairman Adhikara Bhasha Sangam, Andhra Pradesh on30-11-2012. Prof. K.V.Rao,Vice-Chancellor presided over

On the eve of the Wildlife Week-2012, theDepartment of Environmental Sciences organized an essaywriting competition on “Role of Wildlife in EnvironmentalProtection” in Telugu and English on 3-10-2012 for theUniversity Campus Students. Prizes were distributed to thewinners in English and Telugu competition separately. Theprizes were given away in a One Day Workshop on Role ofWildlife in Environmental Protection organized by theDepartment of Environmental Sciences on 9-10-2012.

NATIONAL INTEGRATION WEEK (19 - 25 NOVEMBER, 2012)As per the directions of the Government of Andhra Pradesh, the National Integration Week (19th to 25th November,

2012) was celebrated in all the University Colleges, to foster and reinforce Communal Harmony and National Integrationamong the members of the University community. The Gandhian Studies Centre conducted the activities pertaining tothe National Integration Week. National Integration Pledge was administered to the university community by Prof. K.V.Rao, Vice-Chancellor, Acharya Nagarjuna University on 19.11.2012. On the eve of the Flag Day on 23.11.2012, donationswere collected amounting to Rs. 7027/- from all sections of the University Community for the welfare of the displacedchildren affected by communal violence. Gandhian Centre and Centre for Women’s Studies of ANU celebrated Women’sDay focusing on “Role of Women in Nation Building” with an invited talk by Prof. E. ANU INTER-COLLEGIATE YOUTH FESTIVAL

Acharya Nagarjuna University Inter-collegiate YouthFestival – 2012 was organized on the university campus dur-ing 7th – 9th December 2012. Prof. P. Jayaprakash Rao,Chairman, APSCHE, inaugurated the Youth Festival andProf. K. V. Rao, Vice-Chancellor presided over the inaugu-ral function. Sri K.S. Lakshmana Rao (MLC), Prof. Y.P.Ramasubbaiah (Rector, ANU), Prof. R.R.L.Kantham (Reg-istrar, ANU) and Dr. P.P.S. Paul Kumar (Principal, ANUCollege of Phy. Edn & Sports Sciences) attended the func-tion as Guests of Honour. Forty affiliated colleges regis-tered their teams in this Youth Festival and competitions wereheld in 24 different cultural and literary events. In the vale-dictory function, Sri Gorati Venkanna, a popular writerand singer, participated as Chief Guest and gave away theprizes to the winners of the Youth Festival events. Prof. Z.Vishnuvardhan, Officer on Special Duty, supervised the vari-ous arrangements for the Youth Festival – 2012 as its Co-ordinator.

South Zone Inter-University Festival. Mr. P. Raviteja of Jour-nalism department has won I prize in Collge and II prize inCartooning events in the South Zone Inter-University Fes-tival and has qualified to participate in the National YouthFestival.

Vocational Skills Development Training Programmein “Screen Printing”

Radhika was the resource person for the programme. Prof.P. Syama Thrimurthy, Head, Dept of LLL, coordinated theprogramme with the cooperation of the principals of SrijiCollege and Sriji High School and with the support ofdepartment staff. Mrs. Radhika demonstrated to thestudents and staff how one has to maintain their mentaland physical health, and how to be self-motivated. Shealso made the audience practice some simple exerciseswhich help them to improve memory power and improveconcentration at work. More than 350 staff and studentsparticipated in the orientation programme.

The Department of Lifelong Learning inaugurated atwo week Vocational Skills Development TrainingProgramme in “Screen Printing” in JSS Ongole on 23rd

November. The programme was coordinated by Prof. P.Syama Thrimurthy with the cooperation of Mr. Syam Sunilof JSS Ongole. The Director of the JSS Mr. Shivshankar inhis inaugural address motivated the learners to comeforward and participate in various skill developmentprogrammes. Mrs. M. Skill Development Programme – Fabric Painting

Skills Development Training Programme in FabricPainting was initiated in Takkellapdu village of Guntur districton 30th November 2012. The programme was coordinatedby M.V. Ramana from the Dept. of LLL. The resource personfor the programme was Mrs. Lakshmi. The programme wasinaugurated by former Vice-Sarpanch Mr. Velineni SrinivasaRao. Thirty-six housewives and school dropouts tookadvantage of this programme. They felt that the programmeis a cost effective programme and that their leisure timehad been spent in very useful manner. The programmewas concluded on 12th January 2013. Mr Gadipati AnilKumar, Tashildar was the invited guest for the valedictoryprogramme.

Awareness Programme on “Stress Relief ThroughYoga”

The Department of Lifelong Learning organized anawareness progamme on “ Stress Relief through Yoga” forthe learners in the Jan Shikshana Santhan of Ongole inJSS premises on 19th December 2012. The programme wascoordinated by Mr. M. V. Ramana of the Dept. of LLL. Mrs.A. Radhika was the resource person for the programme.Director of JSS , other staff members and learners in variouscourses attended the programme. Mrs. Radhika explainedto the audience the various causes that cause stress in ourday to day life. She showed various techniques to copewith stress. She explained how Yoga can give relief fromstress. More than 60 people got benefited by thisprogramme.

ENDOWMENT LECTURES

Prof. V. Balaiah Memorial Endowment Lecture was delivered by Prof. Anjan KumarGiri, Head, Department of Physics, Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad, on 24th

November, 2012 at ANU Campus. The endowment lecture was on the topic ofcontemporary relevance, “Higgs Particle – LHC”. Prof. K.V. Rao, Vice-Chancellorpresided over the meeting, Prof. R.R.L. Kantam, Registrar; Prof. T. Uma MaheswaraRao, Principal, ANU Collge of Arts, Commerce and Law; Prof. A.V. Dattatreya Rao,Principal ANU College of Sciences; and members of faculty and students of scienceand pharmacy attended the Lecture. The speaker explained the significance of thispath-breaking research in the field of participle physics. Dr. R. Rami Reddy, Co-ordinator,Department of Nano-Technology coordinated this endowment lecture. The aboveEndowment Lectures were conducted by Prof. M.V. Ram Kumar Ratnam.

Shri Parvathaneni Brahmaiah Memorial Endowment Lecture was deliveredby Prof. N. Linga Murthy, Former Professor of Economics, Former Vice-Chancellor, Kakatiya University, Warangal on 3rd October, 2012 at ANU Campus.The Endowment Lecture was delivered on the topic “Tax Reforms in India: AnUnfinished Business”. Prof. K.V. Rao, Vice-Chancellor presided over themeeting, Prof. Y.P. Ramasubbaiah, Rector; Prof. R.R.L. Kantam, Registrar;Prof. T. Prakasham districts, successfully walked the minimumdistance of 01 (one only) kilometer barefoot.

The following are the salient features of the event:· The programme was graced by the dignitaries ofANU including Prof.K.V.Rao, VC, Prof. Y.P. Rama Subbaiah,Rector,Prof.R.R.R.L.Kantam, Registrar, Principals ofdifferent colleges and other higher officials; Sri.A.K.RaviKrishna, Sri.K.S.Lakshman Rao, MLC, Sri.P.RamachandraRao, State Liaison Officer, Sri.Rama Krishna, Youth Officer,NSS Regional Centre and others who inaugurated theevent and walked barefoot and stayed at the venue till thecompletion of the record.

The participants displayed placards containing morethan 50 different quotations about human values andwalking for better health

The event broke/created several new records in termsof the participation of most number of ladies, different agegroups and longest distance i.e. 1.4 km etc.

A Workshop on Research Methodology in Econom-ics sponsored by ICSSR was organized from 17.01.2013to 23.01.2013 in the Department of Economics. Prof. M.Koteswara Rao, Head of the Department of Economics, isthe Co-ordinator of the Workshop.

Dr. K.R.R. Mohan Rao Centre for ScientificSocialism, organized a series of lecture programmes inANU.

Dr.Vamsi Charan, University of Hyderabad,delivered a lecture on the theme entitled EconomicTurbulence in Capitalism: Twentieth Century andBeyond on October 5th, 2012. Capitalism, for the last twodecades, particularly since 2007-2008 has beenundergoing unprecedented crisis. There is no unifiedframework in mainstream economics that can explain theroot cause of this deep crisis that capitalism has beenundergoing, he pointed out. Dr. Vamsi was of the opinionthat Marx’s economic theory is one of the few theoriesthat can explain different crisis moments in thecapitalism of the twentieth century and beyond. Thismeeting was chaired by Prof.K.V.Rao, Vice-Chancellor ofthe University.

Prof. Murzban Jal, Indian Institute of Education,Pune, delivered a lecture at Dr. K.R.R. Mohan Rao Centrefor Scientific Socialism of ANU on The Legacy of KarlMarx on December 12th, 2012. Dr. Jal said that Karl Marxand his theoretical legacy has been subjected to severecriticism in the wake of the demise of the Soviet Union andother East European socialist countries in 1990’s. Furtherdeath sentence was also passed against Marxism, sinceits prognosis as to the fate of capitalism has gone wrong.He said that against the background of late 1990’s EastAsian economic crisis and particularly the economic crisisof 2007-2008, thinkers the world over started to reviewKarl Marx and his theoretical legacy and to arrive at anunderstanding that Marxism is not just another hypothesisthat might be replaced tomorrow by some other. Marxismis the philosophy of history and to renounce it is to dig thegrave of reason in history, explained Dr. Jal. Prof.K.V.Rao,Vice-Chancellor of the University, presided over theprogramme.

Prof. K.S. Chalam, a noted economist and former UPSCmember, gave a lecture on Native Schools of Thoughtand Dominant Philosophies in India on October 9th,2012 in the campus. Indigenous schools of thoughtdeveloped by different groups of people in India during avast stretch of period before and after the Christian erawere suppressed whether wittingly or unwittingly. There isan urgent need to explore these thought currents andexamine their relevancy and the contribution they made tothe general fund of Indian intellectual history, said Prof.K.S.Chalam in his lecture organized under the aegis ofProf. K. Satchidananda Murty Centre for Studies in Afro-Asian Philosophies. He further stressed that micro-levelstudy of these questions will help us to understand thenuances of this submerged problem. This lectureprogramme was chaired by Prof.K.V. Rao, Vice-Chancellorof the University.

INITIATIVES TOWARDS POWERSAVINGS

As a part of sincere drive in achieving significantreduction in power consumption that would go in tune with“power saved is power produced”, ANU has initiated withimmediate effect a number steps that include _

* Replacement of 800W metal halide light fittings fixedin the sports fields with sufficient number 120WInduction light fittings with the same lighting intensities.

* Operating water pump sets with motors of capacitieslower than 20 HP in hostels.

* Replacing the present 150w SW/MV/MH light fittingswith 24W LED ones.

* Replacing 60W Incandescent lights in Women’sHostels with CFL bulbs.

* Replacing 150W/70W MV/SV/MH street lights nearWomen’s Hostels, Centre for Distance Education andGuest House with 24W LED light fittings.

* Immediate visits to Hostels, Departments / Sections /Centres by Principals, Chief Wardens, with DEE(Electrical) to identify unnecessary / unauthorized useof Electrical appliances / fittings such as Electricalstoves, Air Conditioners etc. for a future course ofaction on the power consumption of such appliances.

* Measures to install solar power generation plants inthe campus in a phased manner at the followingplaces:

a. Heating Systems for Hostel

b. Lighting for Administrative Building

c. Street Lighting wherever possible

d. Hostel Kitchens

8. Implementation of Green House concept in the future

construction of buildings.

In connection with the MOU between AcharyaNagarjuna University and Panama University, Republicof Panama a team from Panama Visited AcharyaNagarjuna University. Prof. Carmenza Spandafora,Senior Scientist, Co-Ordinator of the Centre for Cellularand Molecular Biology of Disease (INDICASAT AIP) andSmt. Olens, Ukrine, were given a warm welcome byUniversity Vice-Chancellor K.V.Rao.
