In total ski resorts across Pennsylvania have made more than $15 million in capital improvements. Skiers, riders and tubers can look forward to enhancements both on and off the slopes. Shiffrin Wins Opening World Cup Slalom

By Tom Horrocks - November, 17 2018

Mikaela Shi rin (Avon, Colo.) opened her quest for her sixth career FIS Ski World Cup slalom crystal globe with another dominating victory in the season-opening slalom under the lights in Levi, Finland on Saturday.

“I felt good, I was even surprised at how good the course felt with the warm conditions,” said Shi rin, who now has 44 career World Cup victories, including three slalom wins in Levi—which equals Germany Maria Hö -Riesch's record win count on the Levi Black slope. “I had a little bit of a scary moment on the pitch, but I fought through it and it was fun!”

e start of the rst run was delayed an hour and moved further down the mountain due to windy conditions. Due to the wind, the gondola was also inoperable, so athletes were shuttled on buses to the start for inspection. But despite the warm temperatures, the course remained hard and fast. Shi rin started rst in the opening run and never looked back, taking a 0.14 second lead over Sweden’s Friday Hansdotter, who eventually settled for fourth.

Slovakia’s Petra Vhlova skied a solid second run to nish second, 0.58 seconds back of Shi rin’s winning time, and Austria’s Bernadette Schild was third, 0.79 seconds back. Resi Stiegler (Jackson Hole, Wyo.), who was racing for the rst time since sustaining a knee injury at the Olympic slalom in PyeongChang, and Nina O’Brien (Denver, Colo.), also started for the U.S. but did not qualify for the second run.

Saturday’s victory also moves Shi rin into the overall World Cup lead, following her third-place nish in the giant slalom at Soelden, Austria, last month. With 160 points, Shi rin leads the standings over France's Tessa Worley (100 points) followed by Switzerland's Wendy Holdener (81 points).

e women’s World Cup circuit moves on to Vermont’s Killington Resort for the Killington Cup, Nov. 24-25 with giant slalom and slalom events. Shi rin has won the slalom the past two years at Killington and nished fth in the giant slalom in 2016, and second in 2017.

Shi rin’s reindeer herd also expanded with her third slalom victory in Levi. She named her newest addition Mr. Gru (from the movie Despicable Me). Mr. Gru joins Sven, won in 2016, and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer won in 2013.

Following the cancellation of the giant slalom in Soelden, the men’s World Cup season kicks o Sunday at Levi with slalom. American men's starters will be Mark Engel (Truck-

ee, Calif.), Hig Roberts (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) Robby Kelley (Starksboro, Vt.), River Radamus (Edwards, Colo.) and Luke Winters (Gresham, Ore.).

Shiffrin Wows Crowd With Third -Straight Killington Slalom Win

By Tom Horrocks - November, 25 2018KILLINGTON, VT Mikaela Shi rin (Avon, Colo.) skied away with her 45th

World Cup victory Sunday, but the fans at Vermont’s Killington Resort were the real winners this weekend. More than 15,000 screaming fans braved mist, rain, and fog to cheer not only the best ski racer in the world to victory, but for the rst time in years, three Americans who quali ed for the second run.

“I could hear them from the start. It was deafening,” said Shi rin, who won her second consecutive World Cup slalom of the season, and her third-straight Killington Cup slalom victory ahead of Slovakia’s Petra Vhlova in second and Sweden’s Frida Hansdotter in third. “ e crowd really carried me down the hill and it’s just amazing to race here in front of everybody. e atmosphere is just so incredible and it’s really, really a special race.”

Shi rin skied to a 0.29 second rst-run lead over Austria’s Bernadette Schild, and more than a half-second ahead of Slovakia’s Petra Vlhova on an “interesting” rst run course set, which challenged a number of racers, in addition to the fog rolling in and out.

“I knew it was going to be a ght because of the tough conditions today, it was pretty sloppy snow, but I gured, ‘well, everybody has to ght, and if I ght harder, we’ll see what happens,’” Shi rin said. “ ere were a couple points on the course where I wasn’t actually sure if I was still on the course, but I kept my skis moving and then I was like: ‘I’m in the nish!’ It worked!”

“I was really just hanging on at the end there,” said Nina O'Brien (Denver, Colo.), who made her World Cup debut at Killington in 2016 and nally in her 14th World Cup start, quali ed for the second run after coming out of the 48th start position to nish 30th in the rst run. “It feels so good to nally make it in there and be a part of the second run. I’ve had a lot of tries, and close calls, and a few not as close… but it’s really a breakthrough today.”

In addition to O’Brien, who nished 23rd, Paula Moltzan (Burlington, Vt.) wowed the home-state crowd with a career-best World Cup nish in 17th.

“It’s super unexpected,” said Moltzan, who was joined at the race by some of her current and former University of Vermont teammates. “It’s typical to have such a great hometown crowd, I’m a little sad that my parents aren’t here, but I’ve got a lot of other people that love me and it is an incredible atmosphere out here.”

Sunday’s race was the rst time in years that three Americans have quali ed for the

second run in slalom, and all scoring World Cup points. Both Shi rin and O'Brien agreed that it is the start of something special.

“It’s been a while since we’ve had a really strong showing and Nina… I watched her rst run today and I was like ‘that’s the kind of ght I’m going to have to have in the second run.’ It was so awesome,” Shi rin said. “We’ve been training together and I’ve seen these ashes of absolutely brilliant skiing and I saw some of that today.

“We have some really good strong racers, and it’s really cool to have this kind of showing of Americans in the second run and on the nal board,” Shi rin added.

Up next, the women’s World Cup moves on to Lake Louise for a pair of downhills and a super-G. Shi rin scored her rst career World Cup downhill win at Lake Louise last season and plans to compete in all three events next week.
