Growing up in Rolling Hills, when Susan wasn't riding horses she was drawing them! Art can be a very healing activity and she often uses it as her therapy. Drawing with the PVPHA was the first time she's felt happy since grieving the loss of her mother two weeks prior.

Preferring to paint from photos, Susan's style is photrealistic and ethereal. The most challenging subjects in her eight years as a portrait artist at Disneyland were babies. They never stayed still!

Susan provided four pages of handouts explaining how to draw horses and showed various highlights and shadowing using a drawing of an egg. Her process is to first sketch (and like the sketch) then paint.

Referencing a very animated photo of a lovely grey horse, Susan explained each step as she worked. All in attendance were able to draw (or drool in admiration) thanks to Lisa Correa who brought sketch paper and pencils.

We all left having tried our hand at drawing from the photograph. Some were hard on themselves yet didn't give up, others were satisfied with more cartoonish or other species renditions! Challenging fun was had by all, laughter shared, and memories made! i

This year the Rolling Hills Estates City Celebration returned to the Empty Saddle Club for the city's 61st birthday. The event was a huge success with a big turnout of city officials, horses, and families from throughout the community. Equestrian events included the annual kickoff poker ride followed by horse and rider games, a trail class, performances by the Happy Hoofers and Palos Verdes Junior Drill Team, the South Bay Gymkhana Series Battle for the Saddle, pony rides, and stick horse races for the little ones.

Thank you to the many volunteers who came out to support the party and make it such a wonderful community event. i

With record-breaking attendance at the Top 10 Freestyle Finals, this Extreme Mustang Makeover was one for the ages. With approximately 100 days of bonding, gentling and natural horsemanship, mustangs and their trainers headed to Fort Worth, Texas, for the 2018 Texas Extreme Mustang Makeover for the chance to win $50,000. The event was held Sept. 6-8 and brought together 61 talented adult competitors and 25 skilled youth trainers.

With the most attendance since Mustang Million in 2013, Nate Eicher and Heza Mercedes gave it all they had during the Freestyle Finals to capture the Championship and a $50,000 purse. Although he was tied for second going into the finals, each competitor is given a clean slate for their freestyle performance.

Eicher performed an entertaining freestyle where he showcased his horses’ skills by two tracking both ways at

a trot, along with performing a few sliding stops and many other maneuvers. He also made sure to throw in a few fun tricks. The crowd especially seemed to enjoy when he sat Heza Mercedes down in an outhouse and then, after standing, he pretended to play the fiddle while standing and dancing on his calm mustang’s back.

“This experience has been very unique compared to the others,” said Nate Eicher, of Weatherford, Texas. “I knew from the fourth day that I was working with Heza Mercedes that he was going to be special. It’s been a great, rewarding journey. The competition was stiff with so many great trainers and I am just blessed to have been in the Top 10 and get the Championship.”

Each competitor creates and prepares for their freestyles differently. Some contestants know what they want to do before they get their mustang, while others gradually put things together. Eicher evaluated his mustang’s strengths and then came up with a comical freestyle performance.

“About two months ago I started coming up with the freestyle,” said Eicher. “I had the buggy at home and I’ve

been wanting to use it, but the chance never seemed right. I knew Heza Mercedes was quiet enough, so we worked that in. Early on I taught him how to sit, so then the rest was just trying to figure out how to put it all together.”

Eicher garnered a $50,000 check, a Cut Above belt buckle, a Martin Saddle, a Best Ever Custom Saddle Pad certificate, an NRS Jacket, Classic Equine Sheets and a Kimes Ranch Jeans duffle bag for his championship.

All adult horses were available for purchase via public competitive bid. All 61 adult horses were placed into adoptive homes for an average price of $3,500, with the highest selling mustang going for $18,000. Complete event and sales results can be viewed at mustangheritagefoundation.org.

Christopher Trapp, of Carlton, Oregon, didn’t let the first-time nerves or vibrant atmosphere get in the way of earning the Youth Championship with his mustang, Watson. The duo was sitting in the number one spot going into the finals, but anything could happen. Luckily, they kept their cool and completed the event at the top.

“I’m just really excited,” said 17-year-old, Trapp. “It’s been such a great experience. Getting Watson ready for this competition has been really fun. We traveled 2,300 miles to get here and he really did great.”

Although Trapp has been working with Watson for roughly 100 days, he admits that the mustang has not always been easy and willing to work with. It wasn’t until something finally clicked with Watson, and then everything changed.

“He started out as a fighter and he didn’t want anything to do with people,” said Trapp. “Then things changed about a month and a half ago. He turned a corner and now he loves people. Once and a while he can get a little scared, but he has come such a long way.”

As for the future of this dynamic duo, Trapp looks forward to working with Watson and one day getting to ride him.

“I’m excited to keep him,” said Trapp. “This winter he will be on light work since we have pretty wet winters. But I want to teach him to bow and lay down, and then eventually get him under saddle so I can ride. He’s really athletic so I am excited to see how it all goes.”

Trapp took home a $3,000 check, a Cut Above belt buckle and a Resistol Hat certificate.

The mustangs that competed in the Extreme Mustang Makeover for adults were wild mares and geldings 3-6 years old that have been living in Bureau of Land Management (BLM) off-range corrals. Youth trainers worked with yearling mares and geldings for the competition and are randomly paired with their mustang approximately 100 days prior to the competition.

At the competition, the horse-and-rider duos compete in a handling and conditioning class, a pattern class and a trail class. The Top 10 adult competitors then compete in a Freestyle Finals performance, and all youth perform freestyle as well.

The Queen contestents demonstrated their riding skills in a horsemanship pattern including ground work and a trail component. They then approached the judges and were asked some basic horsemanship questions and dropped then replaced their bridles. They finished their rides by completing a Queen run. The Princess contestants completed an equitation pattern and answered similar questions from the judges. After the riding portion, everyone gathered in the club house to listen to the Queen contestants compete in the poise and personality portion of the contest.

Every few years I enjoy going to the Extreme Mustang Makeover in Fort Worth, Texas to watch horse trainers from around the country show how well they can train a wild horse in 100 days. The Mustang Heritage Foundation (MHF), which manages several shows a year in various parts of the country, puts on the events with the ultimate goal of adopting out as many mustangs as possible. The shows are a great way for the public to see how a mustang can go from “Wild to Mild”—to coin a phrase from the MHF literature—in a very short period of time.

This year we were treated to a special demonstration called “First Touch” where we witnessed the beginning of the gentling process. The trainer was none other than Wylene Wilson Davis, aka "Extreme Wylene", who judged at this year’s show instead of competing in it.

Wylene started out by stepping into the round pen with a frightened little four-year-old gelding who had recently been running wild

First Touch with Extreme Wylene

and free on the open range. His previous encounters with humans had probably been mostly negative so he was very wary of Wylene at the outset. She explained, “I don’t talk horse and he doesn’t speak English so we’ll have to communicate using

body language.”Wylene started out by playing

a game with the horse where she would get as close as possible without touching him and then walk away before he reacted to her. As she worked, Wylene pointed out “the biggest part of horse training is the release, especially with mustangs.” This process of pressure and release causes the horse to become curious and start asking questions. The release is the reward for doing the right thing and, in this case, walking away from the horse constituted a reward. Wylene also noted that while doing this she watched his feet, not his head, because that is where the power is. She always positioned herself in a place of safety to protect herself from those feet, adding “he’s not a mustang, he’s a horse, so you

need to control the feet.” Wylene also made sure that if the horse pushed her, she pushed him right back.

Wylene said it was necessary to slow her own body down in order to slow his down and get him to look at her. After several minutes,

she decided it was time to add more pressure. Wylene began working him with a flag and then with a rope, all the while looking for signs of understanding such as licking and chewing. She further explained that her methods are designed to teach the

horse how to think under pressure. In other words, teach thinking, not reacting.

“Sometimes training mustangs is just about timing,” she explained. As Wylene continued to work the mustang in the pen it became apparent that the horse was becoming more relaxed with Wylene. By the end of the one-hour demonstration she was actually scratching him on the neck!

Of course, Wylene made this process look very easy although most of us would not find that to be the case. However, if you want a mustang and don’t think you have the ability to train it yourself, you can attend a Mustang Heritage Foundation event and bid on a mustang with 100 days of intense training.

Even better, you won’t have to travel to Texas or Kentucky to see a “Mustang Makeover” as the organization is hoping to plan a show in the Los Angeles area next year. The 2019 show dates have not been announced yet, so keep an eye on their website (mustangheritagefoundation.org) for information about upcoming events and mustang and wild burro news. i
