TAMPA BAY – The Tampa Bay Lightning have named Total Hockey as a preferred partner today, the organization announced. The two organizations will col-laborate in an effort to grow the game of hockey at the grass roots level and encour-age green efforts in the sport.

The partnership’s first endeavor is to inte-grate HockeyGreen at the professional hock-ey level. HockeyGreen is Total Hockey’s composite stick recycling program that rewards players for going green by recycling their broken and unusable composite hockey sticks instead of discarding them. Every broken composite hockey stick is eligible for a $10 credit towards a qualifying stick purchase at Total Hockey.

The new partnership between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Total Hockey incorpo-rates the HockeyGreen program at the Tampa Bay Times Forum and the Lightning’s prac-tice facility, the Brandon Ice Sports Forum. Broken composite sticks will be collected from all players who practice and play at the rinks.

In an effort to find a way to recycle carbon fiber, Total Hockey is collecting and hous-ing large amounts of carbon fiber materials to provide scientists with a large cache for research and devel-opment. These third party organizations are focusing on find-ing efficient and cost-

effective ways to recycle these resources.Total Hockey is committed to advancing

progress in environmental understanding and practices to help reduce the game of hockey’s ecological impact in the world. The retailer is actively engaging the hockey community in its green efforts to not only raise awareness, but also provide solutions to minimize the organization’s carbon foot-print. These endeavors focus on imple-menting strategies to further reuse, recycle and reduce products and services at Total Hockey. For more information, visit www.HockeyGreen.com.

In exchange for the Lightning’s participa-tion in HockeyGreen, Total Hockey will be providing hockey equipment for use in local youth hockey development pro-grams. This partnership demonstrates Total Hockey’s commitment to growing the game of hockey throughout the nation. As the exclusive hockey equipment retailer of USA Hockey, Total Hockey supports youth hock-ey endeavors and continues to help increase youth hockey participation across the nation.

The Southern Illinois IceHawks, a Metro-East- based youth hockey organi-zation, will call Scottrade Center its tem-porary home for the 2012- 2013 youth hockey season, thanks to the St. Louis Blues.

As a result of this unique opportu-nity extended by the Blues, all Southern Illinois IceHawks practices and games, at all age and skill levels, will be played at the Scottrade Center beginning on Nov. 14 and for the duration of the youth hockey season, unless U.S. Ice resumes normal business operations. In early October, a mine subsidence event forced the IceHawks’ home rink, U.S. Ice Sports Complex in Fairview Heights, to close indefinitely.

“The Southern Illinois IceHawks are tremendously grateful for the opportunity extended to us by the St. Louis Blues to continue our youth hockey season at the Scottrade Center,” said Pat McLeod,

Southern Illinois IceHawks President. “To play in the home of such a storied and successful NHL franchise like the St. Louis Blues is something many of our young players only dream about. The Blues continue to demonstrate a strong commitment to youth hockey, the devel-opment of the game at all levels and to the St. Louis community.”

Since U.S. Ice suspended operations, the IceHawks continued practices at vari-ous rinks throughout the St. Louis area in preparation for the beginning of regular season play later this month.

“The cooperation extended to the IceHawks by organizations throughout the region allowed our players to skate through these uncertain times. On behalf of the more than 250 IceHawks fami-lies, we would like to say thank you to Missouri Hockey Youth Division and all teams and facilities that supported us so far this season,” said McLeod.

The North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL) today announced the Three Stars of the Week presented by Combat Hockey for the week ending November 4, 2012. The three stars of the week is an award given each week of the regular season to the top perform-ing players in the NA3HL as nominated by their head coaches.

Brycon Johnson, forward, St. Louis Jr.

Blues - At 16-2-0, the St. Louis Jr. Blues cur-rently boast the NA3HL’s best record. They picked up two more wins this past weekend over Quad City and the big contributor was 16-year-old forward Brycon Johnson. The native of St. Peters, Missouri, posted a five-point weekend (3 goals, 2 assists) as the Jr. Blues swept the Jr. Flames. In Saturday’s 7-2 win, Johnson had a goal and an assist

and was a +4. In Sunday’s 6-1 win, Johnson (5’11/185) chimed in with two goals and an assist. The points in both games extended his point streak to seven straight games. In 12 games this season with the Jr. Blues, Johnson has 17 points and has recorded at least a point in all but one game.

“Brycon has been able to be one of our more consistent players so far this season. That is rare for someone his age, but he has a lot of natural skill and is a very gifted player for being just 16-years-old,” said St. Louis head coach JP Beilsten.

NEW YORK -- Negotiations between the National Hockey League and National Hockey League Players’ Association toward a new Collective Bargaining Agreement have resumed Tuesday afternoon at an undisclosed location in New York City.

In a media briefing prior to the meeting, NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr said the agenda will focus on the “issues which divide us.”

According to NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, to avoid disrupting the process the NHL will wait until the talks conclude to address the media.

Daly and NHLPA Special Counsel Steve Fehr met at a private location for several hours Saturday and both reported a desire to continue the meetings this week.

Saturday’s meeting was the first face-to-face session between the two sides since Oct. 18 in Toronto.

The NHL and NHLPA have been without a CBA since Sept. 15.

NEW YORK -- The National Hockey League today announced the cancellation of the 2013 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic. The game was scheduled for Jan. 1 between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich. In addition, the League announced all SiriusXM Hockeytown Winter Festival events scheduled for Dec. 16-31 at Comerica Park in Detroit are cancelled.

The next NHL Winter Classic – featur-ing the Red Wings and Maple Leafs - and Hockeytown Winter Festival will take place at the University of Michigan and Comerica Park, respectively. Those who have pur-chased tickets for the 2012-13 events can either receive refunds or maintain their tick-ets for the future events. Ticket refund infor-

mation for the 2013 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic and SiriusXM Hockeytown Winter Festival can be found at: nhl.com/winterclas-sicrefund.

The cancellation was necessary because, given the absence of a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL Players’ Association and the NHL, the League was not in a position to do all that is necessary to adequately stage events of this magnitude. This year’s Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic and the companion SiriusXM Hockeytown Winter Festival called for the construction of major outdoor rink facilities at both Comerica Park and ‘The Big House’. Multiple games involving teams from the NHL, NCAA, American Hockey League, Ontario Hockey League, high school and local minor hockey

leagues were scheduled, requiring travel and hotel commitments. Beyond the construc-tion of two major outdoor rink facilities, the combined events were preparing to welcome nearly 400,000 guests to Detroit and Ann Arbor over the holiday period.

“The logistical demands for staging events of this magnitude made today’s decision unavoidable. We simply are out of time,” said NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly. “We are extremely disappointed, for our fans and for all those affected, to have to cancel the Winter Classic and Hockeytown Winter Festival events.”

“We look forward to bringing the next Winter Classic and the Hockeytown Winter Festival to Michigan,” Daly added.

2012 TOP HAT CLASSIC

It was an amazing start to the 2012-13 high school season for Lindbergh.

The Flyers just hope that their champion-ship at the Top Hat Classic at the Webster Ice Rink is not the biggest highlight of the upcoming season.

“It was a great tournament and was a good confidence builder for us,” Lindbergh coach Greg Anderson said. “But our biggest goal with nine seniors on the team is to finish the season at the Scottrade Center and we know now that we have a target on our back.”

Lindbergh, which won the Marquette Tournament earlier in the pre-season, has defeated four teams and tied one from the perennially strong Metro Catholic Conference in addition to a memorable win over Oakville, which ended the Flyer season last year in a tight series.

The Flyers opened the Top Hat Classic with two wins and a tie in pool play action. They shut out Vianney 5-0, tied St. Louis University High 4-4 and then handled Eureka 7-1.

That set the stage for an amazing three games in the bracketed portion of the tourna-ment.

The Flyers defeated Oakville 2-1 in the quarterfinals, which featured a shootout for the ages. The game was tied 1-1 after regula-tion and was decided by the shootout. But it was not finally decided until the 14th player (out of 17 skaters), Brett Czaicki, scored for

the Flyers.“I have never

had a shootout go that long,” Anderson said. “We shot first and scored on our first attempt but then they answered with a goal. It would take until the sixth or sev-enth shot until we scored again and then they scored.”

Opilka was bril-liant as he faced numerous do-or-die situations with the game on the line.

“Luke is a game changer,” Anderson said. “We know with him in the net that we have a chance to win any game.”

The Flyers also eventually showed that they could win without Opilka.

Opilka was in the net in a 3-2 semifinal win over Chaminade. The Flyers had the better of the play for most of the game but the Red Devils kept it close.

Lindbergh was the underdog in the champi-onship game as it not only had to face power-house CBC but do so without Opilka.

Zach Remming was in net against the Cadets and was brilliant at times as the Flyers

won 5-2.“CBC is always a measuring stick and I am

thinking that it was 2000 or 2001 the last time we beat them,” Anderson said.

Lindbergh never trailed in the champion-ship game but it was tied 2-2 when Tyler Opilka scored a late power play goal in the second period. That gave the Flyers the momentum as they added a third period goal and then an empty netter. Cody Guidorzi scored twice to lead the Flyers.

But it was the play of Remming and the third line, which was most encouraging to Anderson.

“I knew what we had with our first two lines,” Anderson said. “But our depth was a question coming into the season. I didn’t know how our third line would compete with

the third lines of the other top teams. But the third line played extremely well throughout the tournament. It was truly an all-around package which led to our championship.”

The Flyers, who defeated DeSmet in the championship game of the Marquette Tournament, opened the regular season in Mid-States Monday with a 7-2 win over Fox.

Members of the 2012-13 Flyers include: Brett Czaicki; Andrew Fischer; Colin Fischer; Ian Giegling; Nicholas Gray; Zachary Groppe; Cody Guidorzi; Jacob Henderson; Alec Hernandez; Michael Humme; Shawn Leslie; Samuel Maddox; Kurtis Mager; Kyle Meeh; Zane O’Bryan; Luke Opilka; Tyler Opilka; Zachary Remming; Curtis Schlereth; James Smythe; David Thurby; Alison Ullrich; Zachary Whisler; and Alec Woods.

ST. LOUIS – St. Louis Blues Chief Operating Officer Bruce Affleck released the following statement regarding the passing of former Blues organist Ernie Hays.

“On behalf of the St. Louis Blues, I would like to express how saddened we are to learn of the passing of Ernie Hays,” said Affleck. “The excitement that Ernie brought at Blues

games will forever be remembered by our fans. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Loreta, and to their family.”

Mr. Hays played at the St. Louis Arena for three decades and also spent 40 seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals in addition to the St. Louis football Cardinals.

Welcome to a new season hockey parents. No matter how old your youth player is, enjoy the ride! You may not believe it now, but in the blink of an eye the season will be gone.

Children and their activities mark our passage of time in a way we could never have imagined before they entered our lives. We measure all events by their relationship to some activity involving our children. “I know he was younger than four because it was before he was playing hockey.” or “I remember it hap-pened before tryouts this year.” And, so it goes. Our children and their events are the yardstick by which we measure time. Just as when they are infants and pre-school seems years away, in September the season feels long. But then, one day, we wake up and realize how lucky we were that all our games at distant rinks were spared the burden of severe winter weather. The season has taken shape. There is a team record showing wins and losses. And, more important than any team stats is your personal sense of how the season has gone.

Today is the day to start to create the sense of team, to create the season you want to experience. A returning hockey parent must leave last year’s baggage behind. We must start fresh, plan for the season, and help our children meet the challenges head on with a positive attitude. We have to learn to see the long view, open the lens and see the wide angle.

Hockey is a sport. Involvement in hockey helps our children stay in shape, learn to manage time and develop social skills. Some teams and organizations foster recreation over development. Others strive to build better hockey play-ers, some to build better reputations for themselves. Knowing the ultimate goal of the team or organization can help you

take things in stride. Every practice and every game, and

even every moment we spend in the car with our children create opportunities to store a memory in our hockey scrap-book. There will be moments of humor and humility; moments of intensity and insanity, moments of victory and times of defeat. Over time, we will forget the insanity of a schedule that has our children up earlier on a Saturday morn-ing than a school day or out later on a Wednesday night than the local village curfew. We forget how we closed our eyes when our child took a penalty shot, but never for-get that we didn’t bring the video camera to that particu-lar game. Hockey moms will never forget the innocence of the sweet smile behind the mask. We remember how we truly enjoyed the sweaty little heads that emerged from the helmet desperate only for a sports drink and to make plans for the weekend.

Etch your special moments and images in your plan for this season. We can take con-trol and make positive things happen. Hockey is time con-suming and expensive and a tremendous commitment for the entire family of any hockey player. Let’s be sure we find every way possible to make the lasting memories enjoyable.

Happy hockey. If you wish to write to me or

if you have ideas for a future column, please send me an e-mail at [email protected]

ST. LOUIS – The St. Louis Blues have announced plans to put down ice at Scottrade Center to provide a temporary home for the Fairview Heights Youth Hockey Club starting Wednesday, Nov. 14.

“We are happy to assist the Fairview Heights Hockey Club while its home rink is unavailable,” said Blues COO Bruce Affleck. “The St. Louis area has a vibrant youth hock-ey community, and the Blues try to support youth hockey in any way possible.”

Fairview Heights has been without its home

rink, the U.S. Ice Complex, since Oct. 9 when it was closed after incurring damage due to mine subsidence. The complex may remain closed for several weeks while the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and struc-tural engineers make further assessments of the situation.

The 75,000 square-foot, dual-rink facility is home to activities ranging from youth and men’s hockey leagues to public skating ses-sions and church group outings.
