SCOUTING THE RAMS

» VCU has already played two ACC teams this season, falling in five sets to NC State and in three to Pitt. The Rams were also swept by FSU’s NCAA Tourna-ment First Round opponent, Washington State, at the NC State Invitational.

» The Rams’ two wins this season were four-set victories over Oklahoma at the Seton Hall Classic on Sept. 1, and a home match against Georgetown on Sept. 4.

» VCU was chosen as the unanimous favorite to repeat as Atlantic 10 confer-ence champions this year.

» VCU’s assistant coach, Patrick Maloney, was named to the AVCA’s Thirty Under 30 list this year, as was FSU’s assistant coach Jordana Price.

FSU VS. VCU

» The two teams have only met once in the series, when the Seminoles beat the Rams in 2010 at the Kentucky Invitational in Lexington. FSU swept the tournament, defeating Kansas State and Kentucky in five sets along with the four-set win over VCU.

BROADCAST INFO

» FSU’s Friday night home opener will stream live on ACC Network Extra.

» PxP: Shawn Davison; Color: Cecile Reynaud

SCOUTING THE EAGLES

» Southern Miss is 5-2 heading into this weekend’s tournament, after picking up wins against Spring Hill College (setter Annie Tietjens’ previous school), Alcorn State, ECU, Little Rock and Samford. The Eagles’ two losses have been to Power Five schools -- Ohio State and Ole Miss -- both of which went to five sets.

» This is head coach Stephanie Radecki’s first season at USM, and she will also be the school’s first beach volleyball coach as the program makes its debut in the spring of 2019.

» The Eagles have seen four-straight 20+ win seasons, and were picked to finish fifth in the Conference USA this season. Seniors Sarah Bell and Kylie Grandy were named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.

TEAM AND INDIVIDUAL NOTES50 YEARS OF WOMEN’S INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS: Florida State cel-ebrates the 50th year of women’s intercollegiate ath-letics in the 2018-19 season. Volleyball was the first varsity women’s sport at FSU, as the program started in 1968. The Seminoles will celebrate the milestone with a series of celebrations and reunions, and will promote the campaign on social media using #GarnetandGolden.

DOMINANT DECADE: FSU is one of only 12 programs in the country to make the last nine NCAA Tournaments (along with Colorado State, Florida, Ha-waii*, Iowa State, Kentucky, Nebraska*, Penn State*, Stanford*, Texas*, USC* and Washington*). The Seminoles have also been ranked in the AVCA Top 15 at some point for the last nine seasons, all under Coach Poole. *National Champions

WARRIOR ON: The team’s motto and theme for the 2018 season is Warrior On, a nod to the personal mantra of sophomore Taryn Knuth’s mother, who gifted tokens with the phrase to every member of the team prior to the season. The team has discussed what the phrase means to each of them individually, and it is a mindset that is kept as a reminder to push through whatever challenges and obstacles they may face throughout the season.

Four different players earned a double-double in the team’s opening week-end at the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, including returners BRIANNE BURKERT and CHRISTINA AMBROSE, and newcomers PAYTON CAFFREY and ADRIAN ELL. Ell recorded the stat in her first ever collegiate match.

PAYTON CAFFREY made her first appearance as a Seminole in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on August 24-25, leading the team in five different statisti-cal categories in Saturday night’s match against No. 9 Wisconsin with 19 kills, 53 attacks, 2 aces, 20 digs and 22 total points earned.

On her 20th birthday (Sept. 1), PAYTON CAFFREY hit her 1,000th career kill and finished the match against Colorado State leading both teams with 27 kills and 62 attacks. She was named to the All-Tournament team at the Colorado State Tournament, finishing the weekend with 54 kills, on 127 at-tempts (4.15 per set).

Returning for her redshirt freshman season, ADRIAN ELL will support the offense as a setter this year. In her first appearance as a Seminole, Ell recorded a double-double with 17 assists and 11 digs against No. 4 Min-nesota. Ell battled Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in high school, which forced her to sit out her junior year. She returned to her club team at the end of the 2016 season to help them capture the USAV 17 National Championship.

Last season, BRIANNE BURKERT became the first Seminole since Cassie McLaughlin (2003) to earn a triple double, and the first to earn multiple in a season or career since Vicki Zinkil earned two in 1993. She is also the first to ever record multiple kill-assist-dig triple-doubles.

Following one of the most successful freshman seasons the program has ever seen, TARYN KNUTH returns this season to lead the Seminoles in the middle. At the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, Knuth led the team in attack percent-age against No. 9 Wisconsin (.312) and had the second-best percentage among both teams. Last season she led the conference and was ranked 11th nationally in blocks per set with 1.49. Knuth earned Preseason All-ACC honors for the 2018-19 season.

Redshirt senior transfer ASHLEY MURRAY comes to FSU from Long Beach State for the 2018 season. Murray’s father is Lamond Murray Sr., a former professional basketball player, and her mother is Carmen Murray, a music producer and founder and CEO of Title 9 Productions. She is the goddaugh-ter to popular recording artist Drake.

Entering his eleventh year at Florida State, head coach Chris Poole has established the Seminoles as fixture in the American Volleyball Coaches As-sociation (AVCA) Top-25 and among the elite programs in the nation, as he has rejuvenated a program that has proven itself as a national contender year in and year out. In his tenure, Poole has led the Seminoles to nine consecutive NCAA Tour-nament appearances, making FSU one of only 12 programs in the nation to accomplish the feat. The team has been ranked in the AVCA Top-15 at some point over the last nine seasons, and has defeated 26 AVCA Top-25 programs since his arrival. Since the beginning of the 2009 season, when Poole began overseeing the scheduling process, the Seminoles have gone head-to-head with 16 dif-ferent non-conference opponents that were ranked in the top 25 of the AVCA polls in the regular season. Since his arrival at FSU, the Seminoles have seen 45 contests against Top-25 teams. By facing those upper echelon programs, Poole has established Florida State’s schedule as one of the most difficult in the nation for the last seven years. Poole has led the Seminoles to three ACC Championships and four confer-ence runner-up finishes. FSU has now made two NCAA Tournament Second Round appearances, and has made it to the Sweet Sixteen three times, as well as one visit to the Elite Eight and one Final Four finish. For his squad’s multiple successes, Poole garnered ACC Coach of the Year and AVCA Division I East Region Coach of the Year honors in both 2009 and 2011. Poole has coached 15 different All-Americans, with 21 honors since 2009. Brianna Barry became the first Seminole to ever be named the ACC’s Player of the Year and she also garnered AVCA Division I Second-Team All-American honors. Ashley Neff became the second to earn the ACC Player of the Year recognition, while Taryn Knuth became Poole’s first ACC Freshman of the Year and AVCA East Region Freshman of the Year in 2017. A native of Heber Springs in north-central Arkansas, Poole is a 1983 gradu-ate of Arkansas Tech and earned a master’s degree from there in 1989. He is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association and has served on the AVCA’s All-American, All-South Region and All-South Region Ranking com-mittees and is also an AVCA Top 25 voter. Poole and his wife, Toni, a former Arkansas State track and field standout, have two children, son Joshua, a Florida State graduate, and daughter Taylor.
