Volume 1, Issue 1 Official Newsletter of Imbalenhle CHC September 2011 Edition Inside This Issue I mbalenhle CHC hosted a successful Mental Illness Awareness Event on the 29 July 2011. The community came in their numbers to grace this event. The main intention of this event was to encour- aged the community and families to support and love their loved ones who are living with mental illness. The latter was outlined by Ms. N. Binase (Acting CEO) during her welcom- ing note. The slogan of the day was, Mental Health Illness Af- fects All”. The same song was sung by Mental Health Society, Ekukhanyeni Spe- cial School, Plessislaer SAPS & Townhill Hospital (Psychosocial Reha- bilitation Section), SANCA & NICRO who were also part of this event. Babongile and Valentine, both from Mental Health society encouraged the audience, not to loose hope on their loved ones because their organization is here for them. They ex- plained about their various programmes ranging from handwork, sport activities etc. to empower mental health care users. They also urged parents and families to protect their loved ones from substance abuse and stress. Dr. P.I. Okeke (Medical Manager) explained broadly about the causes and prevention of stress which is also common amongst the mental illness- patients because of the rejection they encounter in their communities. Emily (Occupational Thera- pist : Townhill Hospital) urged families to treat men- tal health care users as human beings. She also explained about job oppor- tunities available for them. Mrs. L.P. Mbelu (Mental Health Practitioner) urged the community to work hand in hand with the clinic to ensure the proper caring of the mental health care users. They were also en- couraged to liaise with the clinic if they face any chal- lenges with their loved ones. Children from Ekukhanyeni Special School displayed their great talents by per- forming, “indlamu” and by singing, “isicathamiya”. The audience was very happy to see such talents and felt proud of them. I t is a pleasure to meet in this publication which is the first issue for our institution. The success of this publication de-pends on you as readers, so your opinions and constructive participa-tion are of utmost importance. I hope that you will enjoy the contents of this edition. I take this opportunity to thank the

management and staff of Imbalenhle CHC for welcoming me with warm hands and the tasks they entrusted to me. I also like to pass my gratitude to the management and staff of Sun-dumbili CHC for the contribution they made to my career. We take this opportunity to welcome our newly appointed Chief Executive Officer, Mrs. X.N.T. Mthunzi. Her vast knowledge and expertise in the pub-lic health sector will ensure service excellence and attainment of the de-partmental goals. The Management of Imbalenhle CHC would like to thank Ms. N. Binase (Deputy Nursing Manager) for holding the fort efficiently and with dedication since the former CEO exit. It is to be acknowledged that the months in question have not been without challenges how-ever the leadership she displayed and her commitment to the job entrusted to her did not go unno-ticed.

Imbalenhle CHC hosted a suc-cessful Mental Illness Event on the 29th of July 2011. The aim of this event was to encourage the public to love and respect the rights of the mental health care users. The institution also hosted a glamorous Heritage Day on the 23 Septem-ber 2011 to celebrate cultural heri-tage and traditions of the South African citizens. We also like to wish Good Luck to the South African Rugby Team, Springbok in their journey of de-fending the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. Bear in your minds that you are not alone in that pitch, but the nation is behind you, yes it is also our game. Until next time, May God Bless U Abundantly!

I would like to thank Im-balenhle CHC staff for the warm welcome I received when I com-menced my duties in this institu-tion on the 1st September 2011. Extension of gratitude to Ms Bi-

nase who acted as CEO would also be in order as I am taking over an institution that has been efficiently run. I look forward in working with the management and staff of Im-balenhle CHC where we are go-ing to strive for service excellence through innovation, hard work and determination. Our main focus will be on improv-ing service delivery for the com-munity we serve through imple-mentation of the national core standards, the make me look like a hospital project and the six pri-ority areas which are positive and caring staff, facility cleanliness, improved waiting times for pa-tients, improved patient safety and security, infection prevention and control and also availability of medicines and blood products. It is also imperative to achieve the goal of a long health lifestyle for

all South Africans. I would like to see rewarding ex-cellence and health promotion to staff and patients increased to encouraged a long and healthy life for all the community and staff of Imbalenhle CHC. Imbalenhle CHC hosts a successful MMC Camp

I mbalenhle Community Health Centre hosted a successful Medical Male Circumcision Camp on the 6 September 2011. The team was led by Dr. M.A. Quazi (Principal Specialist Surgery - Clinical Head MMC –KZN, MMC Centre of Excellence - Northdale Hospital). The main aim of this campaign was to circumcised more boys in order to reduce the spread of sexual transmitted illnesses including HIV/Aids. The boys came in their numbers to grasp this opportunity of a lifetime. 35 boys were circumcised during this day. The Management of Imbalenhle CHC would like thank all who participated and contributed to the suc-cess of this camp.

I mbalenhle CHC celebrated the Man-dela Day on the 18 July 2011 in style by be-ing part of Umgungundlovu Health District Volunteers. Volunteers visited Northdale Hospital (Female Ward) whereby they fed and bath the helpless ones. The love dis-played by the volunteers really brought as-surance to these people that they are not alone in their difficulties. 1. I mbalenhle CHC celebrated the Heritage Day on the 23 September 2011. The aim of this event was to celebrate the cultural heritage, and the diversity of the believes and traditions of the South African citizens in the new democratic dispensa-tion. The theme of the day was, “Diversity in the workplace”. Imbalenhle CHC celebrated this day by wearing their traditional outfits. They also feasted and enjoyed many different types of traditional food and dancing. This event was graced by the presence of Mrs. May Zuma-Mkhonza (District Manager - Umgungundlovu Health District) who also complimented Im-balenhle CHC for hosting such a significant event. Mrs. X.N.T. Mthunzi (Imbalenhle CEO) highlighted the importance of respecting cultural values and believes of various stakeholders in the workplace. TREAT YOURSELF WITH THIS SPICY ROAST BEEF & BRIE PANINI SANDWICHES DURING THIS AUTUM SEASON INGREDIANTS • 1/4 cup (about) butter, at room temperature

• 2 teaspoon garlic powder

• 1 teaspoon dried oregano, crushed between palms

• 8 slices Italian bread, sliced 1-inch thick

• 1/4 cup horseradish mayonnaise

• 3/4 pound thin-sliced deli roast beef

• 1 cup (about) crisp-fried onion strips (canned are fine)

• 1 (about 14 ounces) wheel of brie cheese, sliced into 1/4-inch

thick strips across the diameter

• 2 Tablespoon Dijon mustard. PREPARATION Mix together butter, garlic powder, and oregano. Spread one side of each slice of bread with the

butter mixture. Place 4 slices, buttered-side down, on a cutting board to build the Panini sand

wich. Spread unbuttered sides with horseradish mayonnaise.

Pile roast beef on top of mayonnaise. Sprinkle with the crisp-fried onion strips and top with brie

cheese. Spread Dijon mustard on the unbuttered sides of the remaining 4 slices of bread and

place on top of brie. You should have 4 sandwiches with buttered tops and bottoms.

Preheat panini-grill or griddle. When hot, place sandwiches on panini grill and cook until golden

brown on each side. Cut panini sandwiches in half and serve.
