Wagin Ladies Golf by Chris Barker
Last Wednesday 24th August, the ladies
played 18 holes stroke for the Spring Cup.
This is one of our main events for the year,
and we thank our Sponsors the Wagin
Jewellers & Ewen Foley. The day started
out a bit frosty, but as the afternoon
unfolded, we could feel that Spring is not
far away.
Earlier in the year we replaced our very
old and outdated Spring Cup and
mounted a new cup on the existing
wooden base, which has all the previous
winners engraved.
Our worthy winner this year for the Spring
Cup was Marilyn Brockway with a score of
97-27-70.
Runner Up was Jan Painter beating Robin
Dunham on a count back, both with 76
nett.
Jan also won both the novelties Nearest
Pin #16, and Longest Putt #6.
Congratulations to our winners.
The season is coming to a close quite
quickly. Good luck to the girls going to
Lake View & Narrogin Open Day, which is
being held on the 8th September.
Quarter Finals will be played on Wednesday 7th September
Semi Finals on Wednesday 14th September
Championship Final 36 holes and plate final 18 holes, will be on Wednesday 21st September.

Hello, Wagin book lovers!
This week, 29th August to 2nd September is National Literacy and Numeracy Week, and the Friends
of Wagin Library & Gallery have purchased the selected book ‘My Two Blankets’ by Irena Kobold
and illustrated by Freya Blackwood for the Library. As part of National Literacy and Numeracy Week,
the 2016 ‘Read for Australia Day’ is Friday, September 2nd. Come into the Library to read ‘My Two
Blankets’ during the week, or ask an older person or a library staff member to read it to you on Friday
2nd September. This beautiful book will be available to borrow after Saturday, September 3rd.
Children’s Book Review
‘My Two Blankets’ by Irena Kobold
A young girl is forced to flee her war-ravaged homeland and later arrives in Australia. Everything is
strange here - the people, the food, the weird language - even the wind is different. She feels cold,
intimidated and lonely. To cope, the girl wraps herself in a beloved blanket and takes comfort
remembering the sounds, words, and memories of her homeland. She feels like staying under this
blanket forever.
One day, while out at the park with her auntie, a girl smiles at her, then waves but walks away. She
doesn’t know what to do. A few days later, they meet again and the new girl speaks to her in words
she doesn't understand; still, she starts to feel happy inside. Over the weeks, her new friend teaches
her new words. Sometimes they laugh together - and very soon, the sounds all around her aren’t so
odd anymore. She realises she's weaving a brand new blanket – new words, sounds and memories
for her new life.
Adult Readers’ Book Reviews
‘Travelling Made Easy: A step by step guide to holidays of a lifetime’ by Tanya Hawkins
Reviewed by Rosemary Thompson
This is easy to read a book written by an enthusiastic life-long tourist and experienced travel guide.
Hawkins has a comprehensive collection of insider tips for the first time traveller or more experienced
adventurers. She covers everything from planning and saving for a holiday, to those “hope you
never need to use” pieces of advice. One example mentioned was if you found yourself in the
unfortunate event of being mugged while travelling, Hawkins suggests always carrying an old wallet
with a small amount of cash and some out of date, cancelled credit cards that you could hand
over. Certainly, there are some “golden nuggets” in this book from a Travel Industry professional.
‘Golden Lion’ by Wilbur Smith
Reviewed by Gloria Newbold
A fast-actioned novel that brings to life the sights smells and sounds of Africa. About the only
downside was that I thought the author lost interest in the ending of the story.
Happy reading!

Friends of the Wagin Library & Gallery Hope all are well, and glad Spring is here. Wow, it has been a cold Winter.
I hope many of you were able to get to buy a book or two on Saturday. We have a great book sale
on the last Saturday of each month with our wonderful helpers Simeret and Tamara.
We had our monthly get-together on Thursday at 4:30pm. It would be great if you had time to come
along and join us next time- Thursday, September 29.
Children have special days at the Library. We have a Storytime for 0-4-year-olds once a month on
the last Thursday morning 9am to 9:30am. Please come along with your little ones. A lot of work is
put in beforehand to make the time special for them.
Also, the Friends take on making up displays for special events through the year. National Literacy
and Numeracy Week will be on from August 29th to September 2nd and the Friends have
purchased the Read for Australia book 'My Two Blankets' by Irena Kobold for children to read, or be
read to during this week. We have a great colouring competition for all school-aged children based
on this book where the prize is a book of the child’s choice. Come into the library to collect the
picture and return it by September 11.
Another purchase we have made is Kelly Newton-Wordsworth’s first book “This is Your Life”. Some
of you may know her for her beautiful music, or her passion for biodynamic farming. Her book tells
of her life journey and the influences on the choices she has made along the way and is well worth
a read.
We have also sent a response to the SLWA on the impact any change to inter-library borrowing will
have on all our library users.
Finally- good news! The Shire has agreed to our request for a public access computer in the library.
The main topic at our next gathering will be- What are the main uses for this computer, and how
can we support our library staff in getting the most value from it? We’d love to see you there to get
some ideas flowing.
