Being the members of WIE(IEEE) our first step towards women empowerment had been conducting a training program for two days on basics of computer for government school girls.We are glad to get such opportunity where we could spend time for teaching them providing our labs with required facilities and a system assigned to each of them.More importantly we were gladsome about the feedback we received. SUMITHA KRISHNAN-
Sunitha Krishnan is a socialworker, who has always beenthe one to stand up for andhelp everyone out in anywaypossible. Krishnan was aprecocious child, she was abadass from the beginning.Her passion for social workbecame manifested when, atthe age of 8 years, she startedteaching dance to mentallychallenged children. By theage of 12, she was runningschools in slums forunderprivileged children.Atthe age of 15, while workingon a neo-literacy campaignfor the Dalit community,Krishnan was gang raped byeight men.
This incident served as theimpetus for what she doestoday.Instead of breakingdown due to the rape, sherecovered from the incident.She started an organizationcalled Prajwala, that stands onfive pillars: prevention,rescue, rehabilitation,reintegration and advocacy.Her organization has savedand recovered over 12,000survivors of sex trafficking.She sold her all to build thisorganization up, to educateand provide a place for thewomen who had nowhere elseto go to.
Since she stands up for acontroversial topic, she’s beena victim of constant threatsand attacks. She’s been hitmultiple times, pushed,threatened to be killed. ButSunitha stands firmly on herground and says that theseattacks only make herstronger.Sumitha has alsoused her platform by creatingvarious movies to raise moreawareness of sex trafficking inIndia. POORNA MALAVATH: 'MY REASON FOR CLIMBING MT EVEREST WAS
TO PROVE GIRLS CAN ACHIEVE ANYTHING'
The first time PoornaMalavath saw Mount Everest,she turned to her coach andsaid cheerfully, “It’s not thattall. We can climb it in a day.”She was 13 years old. Malavath had come to theEverest base camp from agovernment residential schoolin Telangana after eightmonths of gruellingmountaineering training. Aspart of her training, she hadhad to scale Mount Renock at17,000 feet in theKanchenjunga range in theHimalayas, which was thenfollowed by acclimatisation inthe mountains aroundLadakh, at -35 degrees Celsius.On 25 May 2014, Malavath,along with her 17-year-oldfriend S Anand Kumar,summited Everest. Shebecame the youngest girl inthe world to have ever donethis.
Malavath, who is now 16 andis finishing her class 12 exams,is firm about one thing. Shesays time and again that theonly thing she has wanted herachievements to prove, wasthat, “Girls can achieveanything”. She says this whenI ask her what she likes aboutmountaineering, and she saysit again when I ask her abouther interest in sports. “Peoplethink girls can’t do everything,but in my experience, theycan,” she says. “It was myreason for climbing Everest.” She belongs to a tribal family.Her parents (mother Lakshmiand father Devidas) are farmlabourers. She joinedTelangana Social WelfareResidential EducationalInstitutions Society for hereducation.
Her talent was spotted by thesecretary of the Society Dr.R.S Praveen Kumar. Shewas shortlisted for OperationEverest along with a dalit boy,Sadhanapalii Anand Kumar.In preparation for climbingMount Everest she trekked tomountains of Ladakh andDarjeeling.
