FROM THE HEAD
Dear Parents, On Wednesday morning The Senior Leadership Team were invited to watch Year 3 perform their ESB Choral verse. It was such an indulgent treat, after being deprived of such activities for so long, due to the social distancing rules. It quickly made us all realise how much we enjoy watching our girls ‘in action’! In particular, this performance was like watching an orchestra play: it had rhythm and pace, with every voice a singular instrument used for a different purpose. Every part equally important, working as a team to both entertain and tell a story
Miss Leach has written about the process of preparing the girls for their performance:-
Choral Speaking – An Adventure In Sound
“If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster….” then you are probably rehearsing your group speaking presentation. An established tradition in Year 3, the Choral Speaking Project is usually assessed by an external examiner from the English Speaking Board. In a year, different from others in so many ways, we were especially keen that the girls should experience the thrill of the alchemy that takes a piece of text on a page and turns it into a collaborative and orchestrated performance. Each girl’s voice is a unique instru-ment. Over weeks of practice, they learn to refine their listening skills and to hone their teamwork in or-der to create a finished piece that never fails to surprise them all. Of course, there are highs and lows along the way but then, one morning, we all stand amazed because we have heard, for the first time, the effect that we have been working so hard to achieve. Even for a grizzled old teacher who has seen the trick before, the revelation of something greater than the sum of its parts is magical. The young performers never forget it. The final stage belongs solely to the girls. It is they who must take the piece in front of an audience and recreate it. We were all thrilled with your daughters’ performances and we could not be prouder them! We look forward to sharing the presentations with you at our Shine assembly”.
In addition, Years 4 and 5 girls performed their individual ESB Presentations this term and have all achieved outstanding results. We will be delighted to share these results with parents when the reports go out.
For those of you with home nations competing in the Round of 16 in the Euro this weekend – I hope you will be successful and enjoy the games, regardless of the results. With such a variety of countries repre-sented by our girls at The Cavendish, I expect some families to be celebrating on 11th July!
Have a good weekend
