To All Students, Staff, and Faculty, I’d like to personally welcome all of you to the first issue of Rutgers IIE’s new monthly newsletter, The Industrial Inquirer. This newsletter came about as a response to bridge the gap between the student body and our society. We want to be as transparent as possible with all of the students, as you are the key factor in the continued success of our organization. I am incredibly pleased with what our society has accomplished so far this year. Our team has worked extremely hard to put together a well-balanced program and we have done an excellent job in executing our operation plan. However, we have only begun to scratch the surface of our potential. I am making it no secret that we are on a mission to be one of the best student chapters in the country. I am motivated to bring a new culture to IIE at Rutgers and I have a clear vision as to where I want to see our organization in the future. I was fortunate enough to attend IIE’s national conference last year, which was a truly invaluable experience, and it has served as the prime motivational factor in leading our society. It opened my eyes to what you can accomplish by being part of an organization like IIE and by being a student leader. I am happy to say that we are currently on the path towards bigger and better things, but we still have a lot of work to do. We will need more leaders to step up and take active roles in the future in order to sustain our success and continue to grow. With that being said, I want to bring as many students to this year’s conference as possible (it’s in Orlando, FL!) I want all of our students to have the same experience I did because I want you all to see that there is virtually no limit to what you can achieve. You have the opportunity to be a part of something special, and I encourage anyone who is interested to get involved. Sincerely,

Jeff Meltzer

Welcome to the Spring 2012 semester

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all of our engineering students to the Spring 2012 semester! Our IIE leadership team of Jeff Meltzer, Bobby Goodacre and the rest of the officers are working hard to run a quality program of IIE events. For the past five consecutive years, the Rutgers IIE Chapter #841 is the recipient of the Gold Award in the IIE Chapter Recognition Program and we are on track to do so once again in 2012.

This Spring, IIE is offering a Six Sigma Green Belt course and certification through the American Society for Quality (ASQ). Details are available at www.ASQPrinceton.org along with some scholarship information. IIE also plans to reprise our ever popular Lean Six-Sigma Yellow Belt certification once again this semester. The IIE Student Regional Conference will be held at the Rochester Institute of Technology during March 23-25 and our Department will have two senior design teams participating in the Student Technical Paper Competition. The IIE Annual Conference will be held at the Hilton Bonnet Creek Hotel in Orlando, FL during May 19-23 and Jeff is trying to have a strong Rutgers ISE student contingent participate this year.

I strongly encourage any student to join IIE – especially if you’re an ISE student – it’s your professional society. You will receive a complimentary copy of the Solutions magazine with your membership that includes articles from industry of “hot” ISE topics as well as employment/internship opportunities. Also, there are scholarship opportunities as well as discounts on IIE conferences.

I encourage you to think beyond the classroom and become engaged! IIE will be holding elections for new officers in April and think about joining next year’s leadership team! Remember – “Engineers make things – Industrial Engineers make things better!”

N.E.R.D Olympics

The Novel Engineering Regional Design (N.E.R.D.) Olympics took place on February 23rd at the BCC, and the IIE booth was a huge hit!

Rutgers IIE held a textbook relay race – with a twist! Students competed against each other in teams of 3 and raced back and forth

passing off a textbook while picking up pieces of paper off of the ground. The competition was fierce and it got pretty intense at times with students diving for the finish line, but all in all everyone had a lot of fun. The event was designed by Rutgers IIE E-Board member and ISE Junior, Arjun Ganatra (Shown Left). More pictures can be found on our

Facebook page.

“What Can IIE Do For You?” Event

Many ISE students gathered in the CORE Lecture Hall on Wednesday 2/29 to hear a presentation from Former Ohio State IIE President David Rossi as

he shared his experiences turning the Ohio State IIE into one of the best Chapters in the Country. Dave discussed countless benefits of joining IIE

such as the leadership, camaraderie, and lifelong memories that he obtained from putting his whole heart into the organization.

Dave also touched upon his times at the IIE National Conferences throughout college and how they were a pivotal point in his plan to create a well-run student organization. He left the presentation with a challenge for students to become more involved and see what benefits they could receive for themselves. Rutgers IIE would like to thank Dave for giving his

time and sharing his experiences with us.

Reverse Career Fair

On Thursday, March 1st, Rutgers IIE came out in full force for the “Reverse Career Fair,” an event where student organizations set up booths and prospective employers approached them to discuss job

and internship opportunities as well as explaining what their society does. The IIE Booth was a big hit with employers as more than 20 different companies and corporations eagerly waited for

their chance to talk with our members.

This event was a truly great experience, as our members were able to network and further develop their presentation skills. In

addition, our society was also recognized as having one of the best booth displays and we were awarded a monetary prize, which was

voted on by the employers!

Newsletter Name Contest

Rutgers IIE would like to thank Sophomore Laura Pawlowski in submitting the winning name for our Newsletter. In our contest, students were given a week to submit prospective names for our new newsletter and the top 5

choices were then put to an ISE student vote.

Laura’s submission of The Industrial Inquirer won by a large margin

over the rest, cementing its place as our title. Laura will receive a generous gift to show our gratitude for her participation and efforts.
