It is the subject of immense pleasure that The University of Poonch is

publishing its 1st News Letter. I feel privileged to be the 1st Chancellor

of the University of Poonch Rawalakot. The People of Azad Kashmir in

general and of Poonch in particular, have a glorious history of making

sacrifices for the freedom of their homeland. The demographic, geographic,

social, and economic circumstances of people of the region stipulated the

establishment of a complete university that could not only address the

plunge of education for the youth of the region but that could also build

up an aggravated and skilled manpower in academia and research. I am

convinced that the University of Poonch will accomplish the brilliance

in all its curricular and co-curricular endeavors. I look forward to the

graduates of the University to print a rousing impact on national and

international market of professionals. I congratulate the Vice Chancellor,

Chairmen, Faculty, staff and students on the establishment of the

University of Poonch. I urge them to work in harmony and lay the building

blocks in to strong foundation of the new university.

I congratulate the students, faculty, staff and community for being awarded with a premium educational institution in the name of “The University of Poonch, Rawalakot”.

It is my privilege to be the founder Vice Chancellor of the University. I congratulate directorate of student affairs for publishing first Newsletter of the university.

The establishment of premium seat of learning is a great challenge for all concerned to lay down its intellectual foundation. The region has produced high caliber leadership in the field of education, science, medicine, religion and politics. The people of Azad Jammu & Kashmir in general and of Poonch region in particular have a legacy for offering great sacrifices for the freedom of the homeland. The up-gradation of the existing Faculty of Agricultural Sciences which is already offering state of the art instructions and conducting world class research, solving problems at local, national and international levels into a full-fledged general university was need of the hour.

Azad Jammu & Kashmir has enjoyed the status of having highest literacy rate in the country. It is expected that the university will become hub of quality education, research, social, economic and cultural activities that will attract not only youth of the State of Azad Jammu & Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan but also intelligent and proficient students from all over the country and Islamic World. I am confident that the graduates of the university will make a significant impact at national and international levels. I would like to urge faculty, staff and students to work together to evolve this university into a dynamic institute to play distinctive role in furthering nation’s, economic, social and cultural development. At the same time we are committed to ensure that our activities benefit the communities which we serve and engage.

Teaching & learning are associated processes. Teaching is formal and structured instructions, whereas learning has a social and emotional element to it. I would urge the faculty to engage the students into learning process. We at University of Poonch Rawalakot would be committed to achieve quality education, research, academic environment of tolerance, peace, friendship, humanism and most important-discipline.

President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir Sardar Yaqoob Khan visited the University of Poonch for the 1st time since the notification of the

independent university on 11 March 2012. The president received a warm welcome by the Dean Faculty of Agriculture Rawalakot along with faculty members, students and civil society, as he arrived in the campus. While addressing the faculty members, Sardar Yaqoob Khan congratulated them faculty members, students, community and people the region for the evolution of Faculty of Agriculture

in to a full fledged charted University. The president advised the faculty to work hard now for establishing the foundations of the new university which should become a renowned educational institute of Asia. He expressed his determination to discover financial opportunities for the new university. Mentioning his continuous efforts to overcome the issues in acquiring the status of full fledged charted university, the President said that it was his commitment with the people of the region to develop an educational city in the heart of Poonch. The main objective of all these efforts is to facilitate the youth of the region to acquire higher education at their door step. The president urged on the faculty to launch such activities which can bring an evolutionary change in the socio- economic circumstances of the people of the area. Sardar Yaqoob Khan shared with the audience that new building will be constructed very soon and funds requested by the concerned company have been released and there is no obstacle in this regard now. Addressing the audience, the president congratulated the faculty and civil society on the appointment of new vice chancellor, Dr. Manzoor Hussain Khan. The president mentioned the plausible reputation of vice chancellor as an academician and potent leader in administrative aspects. On this occasion, The Dean faculty of Agriculture, Rawalakot, Dr. Syed Dilnawaz Gardezi briefed the president about the strengths and achievements of the Faculty of Agriculture, Rawalakot. The president also inaugurated the newly built multipurpose building of the campus.

Professor Dr.Manzoor Hussain Khan (SI) joins the University of Poonch as Vice Chancellor

Dr. Manzoor Hussain Khan was appointed Vice Chancellor of the University of Poonch. Prof. Dr. Manzoor H. Khan S.I, a distinguished academician and engineer, was born in 1944, received early education in Military College Jhelum, got engineering degree from UET Dacca and became Lecturer, Asst Prof and Assoc Prof at the University of Engineering and Technology Lahore. Dr Khan served as Assoc Prof at the King Saud University, Riyad and Pakistan Atomic Commission for a brief period before joining the GIK Institute as consultant in June 1992. Because of his pre-eminent status as an engineer-academician, he was associated with the planning and development of the GIK Institute and later as Professor in ‘93, Dean in ‘95 and Pro-Rector in ‘95. As Professor and Dean he supervised the development of state-or-art laboratories in the field of engineering and his involvement in major research projects is substantial. He also made significant research contributions in understanding the behavior of engineering materials and offered consulting advice to a number of industrial concerns. He was Pro-Rector (Acad.) of the GIK Institute during its crucial formative period of development [‘95-‘99] and he planned, developed and started the graduate programs at the Institute. He was working as Dean Students Affairs when on the request of the President of AJ&K he joined The Multi-discipline University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir as Vice Chancellor in ‘03.While at the University of AJ&K [‘03-‘07], he introduced semester system in all disciplines, introduced new degree programs of studies, added a number of M Phil and PhD programs and significantly contributed to the development of the university in general and its faculty development in particular. The university of AJ&K had its share of the tragic and total devastation caused by the ‘05- earthquake. Dr Khan, emerging from a state of desolation, acted as the chief anchor and commenced the long and challenging process of recovery with fortitude and unflinching commitment maintaining continuity of the academic fiber without any loss of the precious time of the students. In view of his outstanding achievements in the field of engineering, education

and valuable services to premium educational institutions, Professor Dr. Khan was awarded the prestigious civil award Sitara-i-Imtiaz in ‘2004 by the President of Pakistan.

Professor Dr. Khan served as Rector Foundation University, Islamabad [since ’08] which is a

multidiscipline University offering BA, B Sc, MA, M Sc, MS, M Phil and PhD in Engineering, Management, Education, Arts, Sciences and Medicine. Since March 2012. Professor Dr. Khan has been appointed Vice Chancellor of The University of Poonch, Rawalakot.

speaking to the faculty members in seminar hall, Dr. Manzoor Hussain thanked all the faculty members who welcomed him on his arrival and urged the faculty to work hard for the establishment of a glorious university. He mentioned the challenges that will be faced by the management to attain the status of a university with a reputed ranking. He laid emphasis on team work and utilization of collective wisdom for laying down the foundations of a modern and magnificent university. Prof. Dr. Manzoor Hussain urged the faculty to work with professional zeal and commitment to provide the students with knowledge, suggested and skill of practical meaning.

Addressing the faculty Dr. Syed Dilnawaz Ahmad Gardezi congratulated Dr. Manzoor Hussain on his joining the university as Vice Chancellor. He guaranteed the Vice Chancellor of the devoted cooperation from his office and on the behalf of the faculty of Agriculture, Rawalakot in establishing the University of Poonch. Professor Dr. Muhammad Kaleem Abbasi, Professor Dr. Yusuf Ali, Professor Dr. Abdul Hamid, Professor Dr. Jamil Ahmad, Professor Dr. Khalid Mehmood, Professor Dr. Safdar Anjum, Professor Dr. Habib Ahmad Rathore, Mr. Sajid Khan Lecturer, and Dr. Asad Hussain Shah Lecturer, also addressed the audience and congratulated the vice chancellor. The faculty members expressed their pledge to develop the university with hard work and intellect.

Poonch is a historic region of Jammu and

Kashmir. Poonch Division justified a full fledge university to gratify the

demand of thousands of students. I am glad to congratulate the president of the state, the vice chancellor, faculty and students who are the pioneers of the University of Poonch. Being a representative of the civil society, it is a matter of pleasure for me that our future generations will be offered with quality of higher education in an excellent academic environment. I feel pride to express the feelings of amusement to know about the I feel pride to express the feelings of amusement to know about the Inotification of The University of Poonch Rawalakot. The universities

are the source of wisdom and intellect for the youth of nation. I am sure the University will attract the students from all the districts of Azad Kashmir and Pakistan. The area and town will get more exposure. I wish the University offers research activities based on public needs and more emphasis shall be given to applied and industrial based research. The social sciences will also address the local problems and demands of public will be entertained in the shape of practical remedies of their problems. The computer technology should be given more preference in the University of Poonch to develop skilled and proficient manpower that can serve the community and nation in a better way. To see an academic insititute of international standard had been my dream since long and at last the dream has come in to reality in my life at the age of 97. I wish the Vice Chancellor, Faculty and students best of luck and request them to work hard to make this University a very good academic institute on national and international level.

The sons and daughters of Poonch, rendered remarkable sacrifice in liberation under the leadership of Sardar Muhammad Ibrhaim

Khan (Founder President of Azad Jammu and Kashmir). Not only this the people of Poonch have a pioneer role in achieving right of vote for the people of Azad Kashmir. Besides the people of Poonch contributed to the best in every institution in Azad Kashmir as well as in Pakistan. The literacy rate in Poonch is much higher than any other region despite of the fact that Government institutions lack facility for quality education. In this background it was the right of the People of Poonch to have a university where education in disciplines is possible. Al-Hamd-U-Lillah it is there. I hope that with the talented youth and able guidance of Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Manzoor Hussain Khan, the University of Poonch will prosper and prosper and will Insha Allah shine like a prominent star in coming days. Here I would like to add that to achieve the above stated goal, it is the merit and merit only which shall ensure to rank the university at the top.

The President Sardar Yaqoob Khan and H.E Abdul Aziz Ibrahim Al-Ghadeer, the Ambassador of Saudi Arabia in Pakistan, arrived at Chota Gala, Rawalakot on 26th of May 2012. The president and prestigious guest were offered with very warm welcome by the Vice Chancellor, Principal Officers, faculty and students of the University of Poonch, Rawalakot. The students showered the petals of roses on the arrival of president and honorable guest. The families of the president and the ambassador were also present on the occasion. While talking to the audience the ambassador thanked the chancellor and president

of the state for the hospitality being offered to him and his family in Kashmir. He thanked the Vice Chancellor, faculty and students of the University for offering him and his family

very warm welcome. H.E Abdul Aziz Ibrahim Al-Ghadeer, The Ambassador of Saudi Arabia mentioned the everlasting strong bilateral relationship between KSA and Pakistan from decades and assured the commitment of “Khadmain Haremain Shareefain” to stand with Pakistan in difficult times. Mentioning his country’s support after the earth quake of 2005 in Azad Kashmir and Pakistan he said that the Saudi government and people were generous to help the brothers and sisters of Kashmir. “Being the part of Muslim brotherhood, we shall stand with you Insha Allah in future”, the ambassador

added. The President on the occasion thanked the ambassador for accepting his invitation to visit Rawalakot and the University of Poonch. He mentioned the significance of people to people contact for the both the countries and briefed the guest about thousands of Kashmiris are earning their livelihood in Saudi Arabia. The president expressed his assurance that the University of Poonch will be provided all the required for development projects.

Addressing the audience the Vice Chancellor of The University of Poonch, Rawalakot extended the words of thanks to president and the ambassador of KSA for visiting the University of Poonch. The Vice Chancellor briefed the audience and guests about the construction plan of the faculty of Agriculture Rawalakot at Chota Gala Campus. The Vice Chancellor expressed his firm belief that we shall be able to evolve the University of Poonch in to a credible International University.

The notification of the University of Poonch is a significant document in the history of this region. The people of Azad Kashmir in general and of Poonch Division in particular adore education that is reflected from the statistics of educational institutes. There are thousands of students

who pursue higher education in this region. Having the University of Poonch on their door steps, the masses of mountain communities will be benefited a great

deal. The knowledgeable youth will provide sophisticated intellect to the society. No doubt that the University of Poonch is a fabulous gift for the people of state and Poonch for which the president of state Sardar Yaqoob Khan has to be given full credit. Rawalakot is a small town with limited catchment area. The people reside on the mountains and small valleys. There is a scarcity of economic activities in the city due to demographic and geographic constraints. The establishment of full fledged university will act as nucleus for economic growth in the town. There will be thousands of students earning their degrees in different subjects in the University of Poonch. They will bring a socio-economic change in the society and business community will be benefited with this opening. The intellectual youth will distribute the skills, accomplished from an institute of repute and community will harvest their knowledge for the sustainable development in the future. I congratulate the president for being so generous to present this university to the people of Poonch. Principal Officers of the University of Poonch Appointed

Professor Dr. Muhammad Jamil Ahmad joined the University of Poonch as registrar. Dr. Jamil has been serving the Faculty of Agriculture Rawalakot as Lecturer,

Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor in the department of Horticulture. Dr. Jamil served as chairman of the Department of Horticulture. He was assigned the duties of chairman department of Computer Sciences in 2011. The Vice Chancellor assigned Dr. Jamil the responsibility to serve the University as registrar.

Professor Dr. Muhammad Kaleem Abbasi has served in the faculty of Agriculture Rawalakot, as Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor in Soil Science. He served the department of Soil and Environmental Sciences as Chairman. He was appointed Dean Faculty of Agriculture, Rawalakot from 2007 to 2010. The Vice Chancellor appointed Dr. Abbasi Director Advance Studies and Research.

Professor Dr. Abdul Hamid served has Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor in the department of Horticulture. Dr. Abdul Hamid has served as chairman of the Department of Horticulture Dr. Hamid was appointed as DASR in the University of Azad Jammu. Dr. Abdul Hamid was assigned to look after the department of Eastern Medicine and Surgery as chairman. The Vice Chancellor appointed Dr. Abdul Hamid Treasurer and Director Planning University of Poonch.

Dr. Yousuf Ali is a senior professor who performed his professional duties as Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor in the department of

Horticulture. He served as Chairman of the department, as Dean faculty of Agriculture Rawalakot and Controller of Examinations in the University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Dr. Yusful Ali has been appointed Director Quality Enhancement Cell in the University of Poonch.

Prof. Dr. Muhammad Saddique Awan has been serving as Chairman in the department of Food Science and Technology since 2010. The Vice chancellor appointed Dr. Awan Controller of Examination for the

University of Poonch.

Dr. Muzammal Hussain Siddiqui joined the office of Deputy Controller of Examinations for the University of Poonch. Dr, Muzammal Hussain has been serving the department of Agronomy as Associate Professor.

CONTROLLER OF EXAMINATIONS DEPUTY CONTROLLER EXAMINATIONS

Dr. Muhammad Fareed Khan has been serving as Professor in Plant Breeding and Molecular Genetics, Faculty of Agriculture, Rawalakot. He served as Chairman of the department for three years. Dr. Muhammad Fareed Khan has been appointed

Director Transport.

Professor Dr. Khalid Mehmood Khan has served the department of Entomology as Chairman and Professor. Dr. Khalid has been assigned to look after the semester affairs.

Mr. Syed Zulfiqar Hussain Shah has been appointed Deputy Controller of Examinations. He had been serving in the department of Horticulture as Associate Professor.

Rathore had been performing his professional duties as Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor. He served as chairman of the department of Food Sciences and Technology

from 2007-10. Dr.Rathore has been assigned the duties of Director Sports.

He completed his research work on, “Standardization of the Process for the Development of Weaning Food from Germinated Wheat and Mungbean’’.

Faculty of Agriculture, The University of Poonch, Rawalakot has planned to organize the International Science Conference at Rawalakot from 11-13th of July 2012 on “Agriculture and Food Security Issues in Global Environmental Perspectives”. The event will ensure the participation of galaxy of the 500 eminent scientists from the country. The internationally reputed scientists from universities and research organizations have already sent their abstracts for presnetation. The chief guest of the inauguration ceremony will be Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Khan, the president of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and chancellor of the University of Poonch while Dr. Samar Mubarak Mand, (Neuclear scientist) will be the chief guest of closing ceremony of the conference. This conference will be sponsored by Higher Education Commission of Pakistan, Pakistan Science Foundation and The University of Poonch. The faculty has renowned repute of being the host of three consecutive science conferences in 2009, 2010 and 2011. The faculty is organizing the event for the 1st time under the umbrella of The University of Poonch. The participants of the conference will be facilitated by the faculty to visit tourist spots of Rawalakot like Tolipir and Banjosa. All the popular TV channels along with other print and electronic media have been invited to cover the event. The committees to organize the event successfully have been constituted and preparations are being carried out.

Seminars“Our relations with China are everlasting” Says, Pakistani Ambassador in China. Mr. Masood Abdullah the Pakistani ambassador in China visited Faculty of Agriculture on 19th

of December 2011. Talking to the faculty and students the ambassador mentioned the relationship of Pakistan and China in historical perspectives. He described the importance of Pakistan and China strategic bonds in changing political scenarios and diplomatic regimes. “China has helped Pakistan at critical stages of its evolution, whether these were the wars or the devastation of earth quake in Kashmir and Pakistan, China has stood with Pakistan with financial, political and technological strengths” the ambassador added”.

State Bank Counsels the Bankers to swell up the Agriculture Credit for Small Farmers

The State Bank of Pakistan organized a one- day seminar on “Policy and Adequacy on Micro Finance” on 18th of May 2012. The target audience was the agriculture graduates and students who can excel their career in banking sector. The high officials and representatives of commercial banks including National Bank of Pakistan, ZTBL, Khushali Bank, Habib bank, MCB, Allied Bank, United Bank, Askari Bank, The Bank of Azad Jammu and Kashmir were attending the seminar. Addressing the audience on this occasion, the joint Director State Bank of Pakistan (microfinance division) Mr.Muhammad Immadudin described the state bank’s policy to enhance the agriculture credit schemes for the small farmers. He mentioned the efforts made by State Bank of Pakistan to exploit the natural resources of Pakistan and Azad Kashmir. The officials of NBP, MCB, ZTBL and Khushahli Bank suggested the agriculture graduates to join the banking sector as agriculture credit officers. The question and answer session was very exciting and students raised valid points regarding agriculture and micro finance issues for small farmers. The constraints in agriculture development in Azad Jammu and Kashmir were also discussed.

“Persons with Disability should be given the Esteem” Says Farzana Yaqoob

Student Social Welfare Society, The University of Poonch, Rawalakot, organized a one day seminar on “Persons with Disability” on 30th of May 2012.

Farzana Yaqoob minister of social welfare and women development was the chief guest of seminar. The seminar was focused on the social injustice being prevailed in the society with the people with disabilities. Talking to the occasion Farzana Yaqoob emphasized the need of creating more awareness for the betterment of disable people in the country. She said the economically prosperous people should step forward to help these people. Government will be trying its level best to create facilities for these deprived people. Climate change is the growing concern around the globe. The melting of ice glaciers on North and South poles has been raising the temperature of the world. The greenhouse effect is intimidating the sustainable life on earth. Pakistan is becoming more fragile due to environmental fluxes. The squeezed fresh water resources and amplified content pollutants in aquatic and territorial environments are threatening scenarios. The Directorate of Students’ Affairs, the University of Poonch is proactive to mobilize the students in response to world environment day every year. The directorate organized a walk on UN environment day on 5th of June 2012. The faculty and teachers actively participated in the walk. The walk started from the main gate of old campus and was terminated in the University ground. The students displayed banners and placards printed with the messages of conserving the environment.

• Department of Horticulture has visited the University of Peshawar, Tarnab and NIFA on 9th of May 2012

• The Students of Soil and Environmental Sciences along with Plant Pathology department visited Neelam valley on 13th of May 2012 and studied the soil erosion problems and collected samples of soils and pathogens from trees and crops.

Dr. Khalid Mehmood and Mr. Qadafi Khan Wali were the judges of the debate. The students expressed great excitement during the debate. 3-Days Training under Quality Enhancement Programs for Teachers Three days training on quality enhancement programs form teachers were organized at Faculty of Agriculture The University of Poonch. Mrs. Ansa Tamkeen organized the training under the auspices of Higher Education Commission Pakistan. Professor Dr. Syed Dilnawaz Ahmad Gardezi Dean of the Faculty has been awarded Research Productivity Award for the year 2011/12 by Pakistan Council of for Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Pakistan for his excellent performance in publishing quality papers and research articles in impact factor journals.

Professor Dr. Muhammad Kaleem Abbasi, Director Advance Studies and Research, The University of Poonch has been awarded the Research Productivity Award by Pakistan Council of Science and Technology, Ministry of Science and Technology, Pakistan in recognition of his remarkable performance in publishing quality papers and research articles in impact factor journals for the year 2011-12.

Dr. Syed Mubasher Sabir (Assistant Professor) BEMS has also been included in the Productive Scientists of Pakistan with Research Productivity Award 2011/12 by the Ministry of Science and Technology Pakistan in recognition of his excellent research publications in high impact factor journals.

Dr. Maqsood served in the Department of Horticulture for more than sixteen years. Vice Chancellor of The University of Poonch Professor Dr. Manzoor Hussain Khan in his speech mentioned the contribution of Dr. Maqsood for the university and suggested Dr. Maqsood to keep working hard in his profession in Mirpur University of Science and Technology. The University of Poonch Rawalakot has a reputation of producing excellent athletes in diverse sports. The Faculty of Agriculture, Rawalakot has been the winner of overall sport trophy for the University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The University organizes sports events on regular basis by making competition among TGM groups and different departments. The sports’ week is a regular healthy activity which helps the management to make competent teams for inter university tournaments.

THE UNIVERSITY OF POONCH RAWALAKOT‘The University of Poonch Rawalakot’ is located in the heart of district Poonch, Rawalakot, Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The valley of Rawalakot exhibits the fabulous beauty of breath taking scenes in the foot hills of lower Himalayans. The snowy tops of the mountains embracing the clouds and lush green valleys offer the scenes of heaven on earth. The pleasant weather in summer makes the ‘University of Poonch’ the most beautiful venue for academic and research activities.

The Faculty of Agriculture at Rawalakot was established in 1980 as a sub-campus of ‘The University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir’. Different research groups have conducted quality research in different areas of Agriculture. The Faculty has been conducting research in different areas of crop sciences and won research projects from national and international research donor agencies including British Council, Pakistan Science Foundation and Higher Education Commission.

The research and development in Gladiolus flower production in Azad Kashmir has generated local business of millions of rupees. People are growing Gladiolus on large scale and agriculture system has been diversified in Poonch. The cut flower industry at Islamabad has been nourished by the crop harvested by farmers at Rawalakot.

The medicinal plants research is another area which can lead the people of the region towards economic prosperity. The hidden potential in medicinal herbs and shrubs is being explored by the scientists of the Faculty and promising results have been obtained in identification of medicinal ingredients in the local flora of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Germplasm evaluation is being carried out using modern techniques of molecular genetics and phytochemistry. IN-VITRO TECHNIQUES TO IMPROVE PLANTS ARE BEING PRACTICED FOR MANY YEARS AND QUITE A FEW PATENTS FROM THE RESEARCH OF FACULTY ARE IN PIPELINE.

THE FACULTY ENJOYS INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIONS INCLUDING ‘BILL AND MILLINDA GATES FOUNDATION’, ‘PLANT SCIENCE DEPARTMENT OF CHEZEC REPUBLIC’, ‘NARC ISLAMABAD’ AND ‘KARACHI UNIVERSITY’. THE FACULTY IS HIGHLY QUALIFIED WITH 08 POST DOC (EU/UK),35 PHD AND 60 M.PHILL TEACHERS. MORE THAN 600 RESEARCH PAPERS HAVE BEEN PUBLISHED IN NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL Journals of repute. Research projects of more than Rs.50.5 Million have been won by the faculty with 7 research productivity awards.
