194
pole fire may be considered a class ___ fire and
extinguished with water or class A foam.
A
• Pole Fires: If the fire is near the power pole top or
electrical lines or equipment are involved, considered
the fire a class C fire. Do not use water or foam to
extinguish. Notify the local electrical power
company via C&C of the situation. Protect exposures
and establish a safety perimeter around poles and
wires a distance of ____ times the height of the pole.

overheating and explosion can unleash manhole
covers, weighing as much as 300 pounds, as high
as 75 feet into the air and as far as125 feet
outward distance
2. Attempting to remove the manhole cover will
release toxic and flammable atmospheres,
compounding the mitigation problem

➢ The approved method of de-energizing occupancies
by department personnel is by opening (switching off)
circuit breakers one-by one, and then the main
breaker at the main electrical panel.
➢ The cutting of power lines and wires to equipment at
commercial occupancies by department personnel is
not recommended except under the most extreme
situation where life safety is at risk and the arrival of
the power utility company will be delayed.
➢ Many service drops are now triplex cables, which
appears as three wires – two insulated wound around
VOLUME 10
197
a bare support- ground cable and each other. Some
commercial and industrial occupancies may have
quadraplex cables – four conductors. Do not cut
triplex or quadraplex cables. This will cause a short
circuit, which will destroy the blades on the
mechanical cutters and may cause injuries.

proven otherwise.
➢ If personnel work into the last 25% of their air supply
and their low-air alarm activates, they will be
considered to have worked into their second work
cycle and must report to rehab. If personnel exit the
hazardous environment before the low-air alarm
activates, they will be allowed a bottle exchange and
