A welcomed visit from the Community Foundation of South Alabama
Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy is a volunteer driven
organization. We simply can not accomplish provid-
ing over 34,000 prescription medications to close to
1,700 patients without the efforts of our volunteers.
We have recently had a decrease in the number of
volunteers assisting us with our daily operations.
We need volunteers to help us with answering the
phone which includes taking calls for refills. We also
need assistance with filing and other small tasks. In
addition we need help with marketing which includes
updating our facebook page, fundraising and data
gathering for reports. Ozanam is a fast paced chari-
table pharmacy. We do a lot between 9am to 2:30pm
which is the time the pharmacy is open to the general
public. If you are interested in volunteering your
time and talent at Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy,
please email us at [email protected].
Ozanam Pharmacy is open Monday thru Thursday
from 9am to 2:30pm and is located in downtown Mo-
bile next to Wintzell. We hope to hear from you soon.

The Community Foundation Board of Directors and Staff
visited Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy. We were delighted
to share with the Community Foundation how they have
been a huge part of Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy’s suc-
cess over the years starting with the Community Founda-
tion Medical Field of Interest Grant. This grant supported
the mission of purchasing generic medication. The Com-
munity Foundation also provided funds for the Gulf Initia-
tive Communities. This grant provided Ozanam Charita-
ble Pharmacy with an opportunity to strengthen our pro-
grams in south Mobile and south Baldwin counties where
people were impacted by the BP Oil Spill. This past year,
Ozanam received a $65,000 grant to pilot a Residency
Program through an Endowment of the Community Foun-
dation to Ozanam Pharmacy. In July we hired our first
Residency Pharmacist, Dr. Derrick Bradley. The Phar-
macy Residency Program focused on increasing access to
quality healthcare for uninsured Patients. Because of this
program we were able to provide services to Homeless Connect (See our participation on page 2).
In December, Dr. Bradley presented Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy’s Medication Therapy Man-
agement Program at a national conference. Right now, we are in the process of interviewing Resi-
dency candidates for next year.

Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy participates in huge health fair for the Homeless
Ozanam Pharmacy was a part of the Medical Services Team
Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy, accompanied with our part-
nership with Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy,
participated in Housing First Homeless Connect Medical and
Law Event held on Friday, January 31, 2014. Five hundred
homeless individuals were expected to attend this event.
Ozanam Pharmacy was represented by 5 staff members, 2
Pharmacist Preceptors, 9 volunteer Resident Pharmacists, and
9 volunteer Pharmacy Students. Brown Bag and Medication
Therapy Management Services were the services provided by
Ozanam Pharmacy.
The Pharmacy team was able to review the attendees treat-
ment plan and identify issues they may have with their current
medications. The Homeless Connect Event was modeled after
a similar event in Birmingham and is being held for the first time
in Mobile. “The event was a big success, our team saw 42
homeless individuals and was able to help them with under-
standing their medication, This is a vital event for our homeless
community and several have shared with us how this event has
already help them with housing and obtaining a state issued
ID,” explained Shearie Archer, Executive Director of Ozanam
Charitable Pharmacy. Eric Jefferson, Executive Director for
Housing First, Inc. and his organization did an outstanding job
organizing this event said Mrs. Archer. Mobile Homeless Con-
nect is designed to provide medical services, legal assistance,
dental and vision screenings, along with access to housing as-
sistance and mainstream resources (food stamps, state ID’s,
Social Security Cards, etc. This day long community event
brings Government Agencies, Academia, Health Care Facilities,
Faith Based Organizations, Transportation, Law Enforce-
ment/Court, United Way and Businesses Work Force Develop-
ment and other Nonprofit agencies together to provide needed
services at no cost for the homeless in our community.
What is Housing First? In 1992, a group of business and
church leaders in downtown Mobile met to discuss the growth in
numbers of street homeless and their impact on redevelopment
of the area. It was decided to develop a community plan for ad-
dressing the issues involved in a way that would benefit eco-
nomic development while meeting the needs of the homeless.
Formally organized in 1993, the Homeless Task Force initially
operated under the auspices of the United Way of Southwest
Alabama.
If you are interested in participating in next year’s event con-
tact Housing First, Inc at (251) 450-3345.

sity. She served in the Mobile County Public School System for more than 38 years.

Yes, it takes a village and a few angels to help Ozanam Pharmacy. The Opportu-
nity Club has supported Ozanam Charitable Pharmacy for many years. The Club
has provided time, talent and financial support to our Lucky Ducky Derby since the
beginning. They have also assisted us with purchasing much needed generic medi-
cation. Other important projects this wonderful organization has helped include
Mobile Fire-Rescue Department Firefighter of the month and Firefighter of the
Year, Mobile County School System Environmental Studies Center projects include
a 30 x 30 covered pavilion, 400’ handicapped accessible walkway through the Rap-
tor Aviary and Alligator Habitat with pond. According to Opportunity Club mem-
ber Mr. George Yurcisin, “Since 1963, the Pleasant Valley Opportunity Club has
been dedicated to giving back to our community and what better way than helping
our neighbors with much needed medicine and pharmacy assistance.” We could not
dispense over 1.6 millions in medication to Mobile, Baldwin and Escambia without
the help of our Pleasant Valley Opportunity Club Angels. For more information
about the Opportunity Club contact Mr. George Yurcisin at [email protected].
