committee. Throughout this year, Foundation staff will keep you informed with the current strategic planning process. Key goals in the previous plan included trauma system development and the enhanced use of PTOS data. The Board of Directors will complete the new, three-year plan by year’s end. It’s a busy time at the Foundation. We appreciate your efforts. May is National Nurses Day (May 6, 2014) and National Trauma Awareness Month. During this time, we will celebrate all that you do to support our mission and further the value of trauma centers in our communities.

As many of you are aware ICD-10-CM/PCS implementation in the U.S. has been delayed until at least October 1, 2015. As of April 3, 2014 a new implementation date had not been set by CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services). It is important to not lose momentum in the transition to ICD-10 and the Foundation encourages everyone to continue to move forward with ICD-10 education.

FOUNDATION NEWS: VOLUME 12, ISSUE 1 Page 4

Congress Delays ICD-10 CM Implementation

The Foundation welcomes your comments and concerns regarding the ICD-10-CM/PCS delay at [email protected]. Please check the ICD-10 page on the website for continued information regarding the delay and other ICD-10 topics. Additional ICD-10 information can be found at www.AHIMA.org.

The Foundation will be moving forward with the current schedule of monthly webinars, as well as the currently scheduled regional two-day ICD-10 courses. Staff members will work with Digital Innovation, Inc., the Registry Committee and the Board of Directors to determine our Action Plan regarding the use of ICD-10 in the PTOS (Pennsylvania Trauma Outcome Study) for 2015.

Registry Educational Visits to Resume

Trauma Registry site visits are currently being scheduled. 2014 will largely focus on the hospitals pursuing trauma accreditation. However, Foundation staff members will develop the 2015 schedule by this summer’s end. For 2015, staff will focus on those trauma centers that have not had a visit in many years. Overall, the goal

[email protected] if your trauma program would like to be among the first to test this capability. Thank you to all the trauma center staff for your patience as the Foundation staff begin to resume trauma registry educational visits.

is to get all trauma programs back on track with visits occurring every two to three years, at a minimum. Furthermore, the Foundation is investigating the feasibility of remotely accessing trauma centers’ electronic medical records in order to conduct inter-rater reliability registry reviews. Trauma programs will receive surveys related to this potential process. Contact Nathan McWilliams at

Technology Improves Accreditation Process The Foundation is currently working to enhance the efficiency of the site survey process for all accredited and pursuing trauma programs.

LEVEL IV eAFS First, the Foundation is working to replace the level IV paper application with an Electronic Application for Survey (eAFS) which will use the same software as other levels of trauma centers. This will enhance the ability of level IV centers to complete the application for survey and also enable enhanced remote viewing and saving. Similarly, the AFS would easily cross-walk into the level III format if a trauma program would decide to change their

accreditation level status. Previous applications would also be archived. WEB-BASED SURVEY SOFTWARE

Finally, the Foundation is working with our vendor Digital Innovation, Inc. on the development of web-based surveyor software. This means that the Foundation would no longer need to maintain the site surveyor software on individual laptops. Instead, surveyors would access the software at the hospital via the internet through our secure web portal. This would enable surveyor response viewing in real-time; any technical issues could be resolved immediately. PTSF looks forward to testing this enhancement this year.

PaDOH State Assessment Published The Foundation collaborated with the Pennsylvania Department of Health (PaDOH) and numerous state organizations to create a state health assessment document that is now available on the PaDOH website. This comprehensive assessment provides a “one-stop” summary of information on health status, health risks and healthcare services in Pennsylvania. It will support the work of the PaDOH and its partners in developing priorities and policies, garnering resources and planning actions to improve the population’s health. Foundation staff provided leadership for the EMS-Trauma Section working hand-in-hand with the PaDOH and other hospital and state leaders to create a document that describes the current status of the EMS-Trauma System and goals for the future.

This State Health Assessment will be used in the development of the 2015-2019 State Health Improvement Plan. The State Health Assessment and the State Health Improvement Plan serve as prerequisites for the PaDOH as it prepares for accreditation by the Public Health Accreditation Board. The American Trauma Society, in collaboration with the Society of Trauma Nurses, is once again pleased to present National Trauma Awareness Month. This May, National Trauma Awareness Month celebrates its 26

th

anniversary with the campaign slogan, “Playing It Safe” which will focus on sports injuries. In recent years, increasing numbers of people of all ages have been heeding their health professionals’ advice to get active for all of the health benefits exercise has to offer. But for some people—particularly those who overdo or who don’t properly train or warm up—these benefits can come at a price: sports injuries.
