Frederick Swann in Concert Legendary organist Frederick Swann will present a recital on Sunday, April 24, 2016 at 3 p.m. at Brown Memorial Park Avenue Presbyterian Church, 1320 Park Avenue, in the Bolton Hill neighborhood of Baltimore. He will be playing the church’s 1931 Skinner Organ, Opus 839, IV/45. A re-ception follows the performance. This concert is part of the church’s Tiffany Series.

Tickets are $15 ($5 for students) and are available at the door and online at www.browndowntown.org. Free parking and shuttle service between the parking lot and the church will be available.

The program includes works by J.S. Bach, John Stanley, César Franck, Sigfrid Karg-Elert, Seth Bingham, Healey Wil-lan and John Weaver. Swann will also play “Invocation” by Richard Ross, Brown Memorial’ organist and choirmaster from 1946-1954, following Virgil Fox in that position.

Frederick Swann worked with and ultimately succeeded Virgil Fox at The Riverside Church in New York City, where he served as organist and director of music from 1966-1982. Subsequently, Swann held a similar post at the Crystal Cathedral in California. During his 16 years there, millions of people in more than 165 countries saw and heard him play the organ on televised weekly services. Swann is currently Artist-in-residence at St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church in Palm Desert, California, and University Organist and Artist Teacher of Organ at the University of Redlands.

He has presented recitals all over the world, and is also known as a masterful choral accompanist. Recent European tours included special appearances at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, St. Paul’s Cathedral in Lon-don, and Passau Cathedral in Germany. He has an exensive discography.

Mr. Swann, who was president of the American Guild of Organists from 2002-2008, has (in his own words) “failed several attempts to retire.” As he prepares for another attempt, he is presenting a small number of recitals to celebrate his 85th year, which coincides with his 70th as a concert performer. The Tiffany Series is honored to host one of these recitals.
