Why Teresa and I did that to ourselves I’ll never know other than the fact that it was “tradition”. Well, this year I bought Tri Kappa eggs for the adults in our family, but I thought I would do something different for our grandchildren. I’m going to purchase “Egg Plants”. What are “Egg Plants” you ask. They are ceramic egg shells with dirt and a flower inside. The directions for it are as follows: 1. Take the ceramic egg and place on plate. 2. Use a spoon to crack the top of the egg and remove the broken pieces. 3. Add water. 4. Place in a sunny location. 5. Continue to add water and watch it grow! As I read the directions, it reminded me of our relationship with Christ. As humans, we can sometimes be a tough egg to crack. Fortunately for us Christ just needs a little crack to come into our lives and make his presence known. The “Egg Plants” need to be placed in sunlight, and as Christians we need the light of Christ to shine upon us as we travel on the journey of life. Mark 16:2-3 (NIV) Greetings:

From the moment our first child was born, it has always been an Easter tradition at the Ewing ranch to buy jellybeans and other assortments of candy and hide them throughout the house. Once we would get home after the Easter worship service, our kids would go about the task of finding them. For the rest of the day they would be on a sugar high bouncing off the walls and each other!

The directions for it are as follows:

As I read the directions, it reminded me of our relationship with Christ. As humans, we can sometimes be a tough egg to crack. Fortunately for us Christ just needs a little crack to come into our lives and make his presence known. Christ is there during the good times and Christ is there to help us pick-up the pieces and go on in life.

Just as the “Egg Plants” need water for their seeds, we need “living water” which Christ alone can provide to nourish our soul.

The “Egg Plants” need to be placed in sunlight, and as Christians we need the light of Christ to shine upon us as we travel on the journey of life.

The “Egg Plants” will succeed if you follow the steps carefully and give them proper care. As Christians, we grow in our love for Christ as we nurture one another and graciously receive God’s care and love!

SESSION

February 28, 2017 Mini Minutes The February 28, 2017 Regular Session Meeting was called to order by Transitional Pastor Lyle Ewing at 7:04 p.m. in the church chapel. Twelve elders were present and Clerk, Joy Bailey declared a quorum. The Christ Candle was lit and scripture read from John 9:5. Elder Jay gave the devotions for the evening. The docket was approved as presented. The Communion count was 111 in Regular Worship and 7 for shut ins. The January 24, 2017 minutes were approved by the session.

The clerk read a thank you note from Jennifer Burns Lewis, Visioning and Connecting Leader for the Wabash Valley Presbytery for the visit to our session meeting She will be attending one of our worship services in March. The session approved the Church Statistical Report for 2016. It will be recorded in our church minutes. The session welcomed Dorothy Emme and Cary and Holly Wood into the Fellowship of First Presbyterian Church by Reaffirmation of Faith. Elder Bossaer reported that the WEB site is up and running. There is still work to do as we need communions from all the teams. The team is also working on recruiting more people to take pictures of church events.

The Operations Team reported that benevolence assistance will now be processed through the office on Tuesdays and Thursdays. After discussion regarding new more efficient light bulbs throughout the church, it was suggested that consideration be given to replacing ones in the most used areas of the church rather than its entirety. The Worship Team will provide pulpit supply for Pastor Ewing as he will be on vacation February 19th.The Lenten services will begin with a carry-in at 5:30 with a service to follow in the chapel at 6:15. The teams will take turns doing the set up and clean up for the dinners. Ash Wednesday will be at 7 p.m. with a service in the chapel. The Maundy Thursday Last Supper Presentation will be April 13, at 8 p.m. Christian Nurture reports that that no one is signed up for Montreat, but there is still interest. We may have campers for Geneva Center. Janelle Foddrill would like to lead the Senior High Youth and Julie Houck will continue with the Junior High.

Pastor Ewing reported that he is currently teaching the Book of Ruth at Wednesday Bible Study. He gave a presentation at the February 14th HEART meeting on the Holy Cross Hermitage-A Russian Orthodox Monastery in West Virginia. He is currently working on a mid-week Lenten Sermon Series. The session approved the marriage of Tyler Bentlage and Ashley Reinhold to be held at our church on Saturday, October 13th. They also approved the marriage of Kyle Diener and Maureen Patterson to be held at our church on Saturday, September 9th.The next Presbytery Meeting will be Tuesday, May 23rd at Geneva Center.

The Monticello First Presbyterian Church will regularly take pictures &/or videos of our church activities and its members. Those pictures may be used in brochures, put in the paper, put on our website or for other uses. If you do not wish your &/or your family member’s pictures to be used, please make this wish known, in writing, to the church office. No names will ever be used for children under the age of 18.

We’ve had our first meeting and are working hard to communicate all the good things happening at our church via the website and Facebook. We will soon be having our regular activities that could be attended by the public put on the community calendar in the Herald Journal. We have designed and ordered “business cards” which will be handed out to all congregation members in hopes they will be shared with your family and friends as an invitation to worship with us. Presbyterian Women were gracious enough to pay for them, as our budget is fairly small for this first year. We will be updating our brochures to reflect the team changes. We are now getting all the announcements on the monitors in the sanctuary to view before worship.

We will be helping the Inviting People/Missions Team to put together more visitor bags. If anyone has ideas of things to include, we are open to your suggestions.

The new website is published and available for all to view. Just type: monticellofpc.org and you’ll be there. Please take a few minutes to check it out and let us know what you think. We’re open to any suggestion to improve it. We still need to add many more pictures in the picture gallery; hopefully that will happen within the next month.

We hope you are enjoying the pictures we post on Facebook every week. If you have a Facebook page, please find us and “like us.” When we post pictures or events if you “share” it, this will get the word out to all of your Facebook friends. When you see yourself in a picture, feel free to “tag” yourself but please don’t tag any children (under age 18) per our church policy not to identify their pictures. If you need help to do this, please let one of us know, we’ll be glad to help.

We need the help of all church teams and groups to do two things. First, we would like to have pictures of each team, session, deacons, Bible study, etc. as well as any of their activities. We would also like to have pictures of our members who are doing good things out in the community. Anyone can take a picture with their own camera or with the church camera; then please send them to De Anna ([email protected]) at the church or to Betsy ([email protected]). Second, we d esperately need all teams and groups to get articles and information about schedules, events, and news to De Anna by the 15th of every month!!! It takes a considerable amount of time to organize the information to utilize the space available on a page. When information is received late, this is likely to cause her to re-organize things to fit on a page and may result in the schedule and POST getting done late. Please make every effort to respect the 15th of the month deadline for information.

If your group has an event coming up and would like us to get it on Facebook or the website or in the newspaper, please give us the needed information well ahead of time and we’ll take care of getting it publicized. If you’re already doing this on your own, that’s fine too.

We thank everyone, in advance, for all your help and we look forward to your suggestions for helping us “shine our light.” If anyone is interested in serving on or helping this team, please let one of us know. Our team members are: Betsy Bossaer, Marilyn Moss, Richard Tinich, Richard Bailey, Donna Thompson, and Leslie Goss.

Cash Flow Report for Month Ending 02/28/2017

Hello from our little corner of the Church!

Spring Break is looming in the background and our little minds are having trouble keeping focused. (Teachers included!) We just need some consistently warm days where we can go outside to let off some of the excess energy!

Preschool evaluations are finishing up and progress reports will go home soon. We still have a lot of learning to do, though, and we plan to make it fun! We have done some STEM activities such as making a volcano erupt and a Skittle rainbow on a plate. We will also have some bug races using “bug” balloons attached to straws that are looped through a string. When we release the air from the end of the balloons, it will force the bugs forward on their string path. We are finishing up the final letters in the alphabet and learning simple math problems. We are dreaming of flowery days. Our paper flower gardens involved tracing, cutting, gluing and recognizing the concepts of short and long. We will be talking about how insects are beneficial to life and how they are involved in gardening.

Our open house for new enrollment will be on April 18th, a Tuesday, from 4-6. If you know of any preschooler needing a great learning experience, send them our way!

We are in the process of gathering items for our annual basket raffle. Tickets will be available for pur-chase soon. They will be $1 each or 6 for $5. Details about these baskets will be in the next edition of the post. Basket winners will be drawn on our last day of school, May 18th, at the end of our program.

We are also going to be selling $10 John’s Bakery gift certificates again this year. Your purchase them for $10 and use them as cash at the bakery. They have a nice breakfast and lunch menu, as well as yummy breads and donuts. (We get to keep a portion of the money from each one sold.) You will be able to purchase them from any WEB preschool family, board member or from me. Just come on back to my room and I’ll take care of you! Money earned from our spring fundraisers will be targeted toward nice looking storage solutions back in the preschool area.

Grandparents’ Day is scheduled for Tuesday, May 2nd and Wednesday, May 3rd. We can’t wait to share the joy we experience on a daily basis with our student’s “Grands!”

We appreciate your prayers and encouragement as we enrich the lives of our future generation. Have a wonderful spring!

Dress Rehearsal Rehearsal

It has been a custom here at First Presbyterian Church to have mid-week Lenten worship services during the season of Lent. This year we will continue that tradition. On Wednesday evening starting at 5:30 pm, we will have our traditional pot luck supper followed by a Lenten service in the chapel. You bring a main meal, salad, desert, or vegetable and your own table service. We will supply the drinks. Then at 6:15 pm, Pastor Lyle will be preaching the "Seven Last Words" (or phrases) spoken from Jesus while he was on the cross. The worship services will be forty-five minutes in length.

April 5 John 19:30 - When Jesus had received the wine, he said, "It is finished." Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

April 12 (no dinner) Luke 23:46 - Then Jesus, crying with a loud voice, said, "Father, into your hands I commend my spirit." Having said this, he

breathed his last.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2017

JULY 9-13, 6:00 TO 8:00 PM

Mark your calendars now to attend VBS 2017. The theme this year is “VICTORY.” Students will learn about God’s victories of courage through Joshua, obedience through Gideon, faith through David, unity through Ester, and victory through Jesus. The curriculum is by the GO FISH GUYS. It’s a football theme with very lively music and dancing at the opening and closing pep rallies. Each day students will have a time for Bible study, games, snacks, music, and crafts. Registration forms will soon be available in the church office and on our website. Each student or family who attends will also receive a CD of the great music. Plan now to attend. For any questions please call the church office or Betsy Bossaer at 219-869-0548.
