As a homeowner of the Enclave, if you desire to have a modification to the exterior of your home or property, you must apply to the ARC for approval before any changes or modifications take place. This applies to almost all modifications with very few exceptions. If you are not sure as to whether or not your project requires ARC approval, you may contact any ARC member for verification. In order to ensure approval, the ARC application is explicit in its description of documents and other necessary items or information which must be included in the presentation of your application package. The ARC will only accept the original signed application (no copies) providing that it is legible and complete. Applications should not be filled out by contractors. The ARC meets on the 1st and 3rd Monday of every month. You are encouraged to place your ARC application package in the ARC mail slot in the library at least several days before the meeting. If your application is denied, you must obtain the items or follow the procedures that were the reasons for your denial as outlined in your denial notification. You must then resubmit these items and information with a new application which will be considered at the next meeting. On approval of your modification, you are still required to obtain all necessary permits and submit them to the Property Manager as indicated on the ARC application.

THiS iS A RemindeRThis is just a reminder your maintenance fees are due quarterly –
January 1, April 1, July 1, and October 1. If you do not pay your fees by the 15th of the month, you will receive a $25.00 fine. If they are not paid by the

In this and every issue of Enclave Lites is a list of residents who are trained in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) and the use of the AEDs, (Automated External Defibrillator). As a precaution, all residents are reminded to keep this list in an easily-accessible place in the home, in case of emergency. THE FIRST STEP IN ANY EMERGENCY IS TO CALL 911. The next call can be to one of the residents on the list.

The responders are retrained every other summer to keep their skills current. This training is coordinated by Renee Muller and provided by the Men’s Club.Any new residents who are interested in having this training can contact Renee at (732) 730-1563. The more responders we have, the safer our community will be.

If you use email, you probably are familiar with examples of phishing, defined as the fraudulent practice of sending emails purporting to be from reputable companies in order to induce individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers. In other words, it’s a scam. It is similar to fishing, except that in this case we are the fish. We need to be careful not to take the bait.Recently the scams have become more sophisticated and more believable. In the last two weeks I have received about ten emails supposedly from companies offering a prize or some kind of good deal. One says: “Here’s your chance to win a Walmart gift voucher!”. Other examples: “You have new Costco reward ready to claim.”; “Congrats! You’ve received CVS reward”; “Printer Ink: Save up to 85%”; “Heart Attack Defense: This heart attack video has been viewed over 3.92 million times”; “Smart Home Security: A house without security cannot be a home”. There are a number of similarities in these messages that show them to be fake. None of them uses my name
Phishing storiesSubmitted by Bruce Rollier
in the body of the message. That’s because they are sending it out to thousands of others at the same time. All of them offer a link that they want me to click on, or an attachment to open, or remote content they want me to allow. Although several are supposedly from real companies, the name of that company is not in the email address. All of those mentioned have an email address ending with @googlemail.com. If you see a similar message in your inbox, merely opening it will do no harm. But do not click on a link, open an attachment, permit remote content, or respond in any way without making sure it’s legitimate. A message from Walmart would have @walmart.com as part of the email address, and one from Costco would have @costco.com. Any message from a real company would have their name in the address. Even one from Google would have @google.com rather than googlemail.com. If it seems to be offering something enticing, get on the phone and call the company to be sure it’s legitimate (but don’t use the phone number the message suggests). Most of the time, just hit Delete.

NEXT MEETING: MONDAY, March 16, 2020Craft Room at the Clubhouse, 2:00 p.m.Topic: CoronavirusThis meeting will be on the third Monday of March rather than the second. We will discuss the coronavirus and the threat that it poses and how such a disease can spread quickly throughout the world. This will likely be the final meeting for our World Issues discussion. We have been holding these discussions for fourteen years, usually meeting once each month, so there have been close to 150 of them. Some of the topics we covered include inequality, immigration, climate change, self-driving cars, our crowded world, the electoral college, guns and gun control, artificial intelligence and robots, the national debt, health care, and many others. We went through three presidential elections, and over the years we had many political discussions; sometimes those got a bit heated, but we usually managed to listen to each other without shouting and to learn from each other. We made it a point to disagree without being disagreeable and we didn’t try to reach agreement. I am grateful to all those who participated.

from the “Grounds” upSubmitted by Peter Baer
A half century ago, a world without cash was unimaginable, today, an economic universe without plastic is inconceivable. From New York to Hong Kong, for business or pleasure, the practice of “charging it” has become a common occurrence. The legendary story of how it started began in 1949. A young advertising executive, Frank McNamara, scheduled a very important business meeting at a midtown New York restaurant called Major’s Cabin Grill. McNamara spent most of the night before preparing for his client presentation and consequently had very little sleep. Approximately an hour or so before his scheduled meeting he sends out for a hot container of black coffee in the hope of revitalizing himself. While in the process of gathering up his papers, he spills the entire container of coffee over his light grey suit. In a panic, he grabs his briefcase and jumps a taxi back to his apartment to quickly change his suit. Later, after a successful dinner meeting, the waiter brings the bill. McNamara reaches into his pocket and realizes that he has left his cash in
credit cards…or…Giving coffee credithis other suit. Embarrassed, he explains the situation to everyone and leaves a handwritten I.O.U. Later that night he has a thought, “Why should people be limited to spending whatever cash they carried, instead of being able to spend whatever they pleased?”. Later that year, McNamara and his assistant returned to Major’s Cabin Grill and by prior arrangement with the owners, signed for their meal by presenting a small cardboard card….his newly created “Diner’s Club” card. In the credit card industry this is remembered as the “First Supper”.The concept quickly caught fire. Credit cards soon became accepted by many merchants who appreciated the increased buying power that this new payment tool offered. Today there are thousands of credit card companies with millions of subscribers who can now say “Charge It” to merchants worldwide.Could it be that the accidental act of spilling a single container of coffee back in 1949 forever changed the way the world pays for goods and services? You be the judge.

CURTAIN RODS --- PRICELESSOn the first day, she sadly packed her belongings into boxes, crates and suitcases. On the second day, she had the movers come and collect her things. On the third day, she sat down for the last time at their beautiful dining-room table, by candlelight; she put on some soft background music, and feasted on a pound of shrimp, a jar of caviar, and a bottle of spring-water.When she’d finished, she went into each and every room and deposited a few half-eaten shrimps dipped in caviar into the hollow center of the curtain rods. She then cleaned up the kitchen and left.On the fourth day, the husband came back with his new girlfriend, and at first all was bliss. Then, slowly, the house began to smell. They tried everything; cleaning, mopping, and airing-out the place. Vents were checked for dead rodents, and carpets were steam cleaned. Air fresheners were hung everywhere. Exterminators were
brought in to set off gas canisters, during which time the two had to move out for a few days, and in the end, they even paid to replace the expensive wool carpeting. Nothing worked!People stopped coming over to visit. Repairmen refused to work in the house. The maid quit. Finally, they couldn’t take the stench any longer, and decided they had to move, but a month later - even though they’d cut their price in half - they couldn’t find a buyer for such a stinky house.Word got out, and eventually even the local realtors refused to return their calls. Finally, unable to wait any longer for a purchaser, they had to borrow a huge sum of money from the bank to purchase a new place. Then the ex-wife called the man and asked how things were going. He told her the saga of the rotting house. She listened politely and said that she missed her old home terribly and would be willing to reduce her divorce settlement in exchange for having the house.Knowing she could have no idea how bad the smell really was, he agreed on a price that was only 1/10th of what the house had been worth ... but only if she would sign the papers that very day. She agreed, and within two hours his lawyers delivered the completed paperwork.A week later the man and his girlfriend stood smiling as they watched the moving company pack everything to take to their new home ......... and to spite the ex-wife, they even took the curtain rods!I LOVE A HAPPY ENDING, DON’T YOU?

New enclave directorySubmitted by Bruce Rollier
The Enclave Phone and Email Directory has just been published. If you have not yet picked up your copy, it is available at the clubhouse during office hours. If you are out of town, it will be held for you till your return. The directory has three sections: Section 1 has names, street address, and home phone number, in sequence by last name. Section 2 has street address, names, and cell phone numbers, in sequence by house number. Section 3 has names and email addresses, in alphabetical sequence.Since we could not make changes after the first week in January, several homes have changed ownership since the freeze date. We will publish a list of additions, deletions, and corrections in the April Lites. If there is an error in your listing, please notify Isabel by email or in a written note, or send an email with details to [email protected].

We want to share information about gift cards and gift certificates, as provided by the Office of the Attorney General, New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs. Most of us have given or received gift cards and gift certificates. According to www.statista.com, gift cards, both physical and digital, had projected U.S. sales exceeding $160 billion in 2018.New Jersey’s Gift Card Act has the following summary of key features for consumer protection:Your rights include:* The expiration date and dormancy fee, if any, must
be disclosed.* If the remaining balance is $5 or less, you may
redeem that amount for cash.* No dormancy fee can be assessed before 24 months
of purchase or last use.
* After 24 months, a dormancy fee may not exceed $2.
* A gift card’s packaging or sales receipt must include a telephone number to call for information about the expiration date or dormancy fees.
NOTE: These protections of the Gift Card Act do not apply to bank-issued cards useable at any retailer or ATM.Protect yourself by taking the following precautions.Consumer Affairs recommends that you do not send or transmit gift cards as a form of payment, especially to someone who is unfamiliar and has contacted you via phone or email requesting a payment in this manner. Gift cards are the number one payment method requested by scammers, especially scammers impersonating loved ones and the government.Read the fine print when purchasing gift cards or gift certificates. Not all gift cards or gift certificates can be used to buy merchandise online, so be sure to ask. Also, a press release, issued in November 2019 by the NJ Attorney General and the Division of Consumer Affairs providing advice for smart holiday shopping, advises to only buy cards from reputable sellers to ensure the card is valid and was not previously used.Being a smart and savvy consumer is always the best protection of all, so it pays to know the law.Federal law also offers some protections for those who buy and use gift cards. For more information on those protections, go to www.consumerfinance.gov or www.ftc.gov.For further information, you can access the Consumer Affairs Division at www.njconsumeraffairs.gov, or call 1-800-242-5846.

Neighbor To NeighborDear Fellow Enclavians, We would like to expand this column as a means to help people help each other. If you have a particular skill, such as teaching a card game or knitting, crocheting, or painting etc..., you might be able to help someone here who would like to learn. Or maybe you might be a skilled electrician, plumber or carpenter? Since many of us take an occasional flight from a local airport, someone might be willing to offer his/her chauffeuring services for a reasonable fee. There’s virtually no limit to the help that we might afford each other. So, if you have a skill to share, or need, just fill out a request form (forms are available in the Enclave Lites mailbox) and return it to Enclave Lites slot in the clubhouse library, and we’ll include your request in a coming issue of Lites. We reserve the right to exclude any request we might find unacceptable.

In the event of a medical emergency in your home, please do not call the Clubhouse for any assistance. If it is a medical emergency call the EMS and they will assist you in getting you the needed help.If your driveway is blocked with snow and you call the Clubhouse to clean it out so that you can go to the hospital or a doctor, precious time will be lost. Remember to call 911 for any Medical Emergencies, not the Clubhouse.
