Upfrontby Emmanuel Legrand, Music & Media editor -in -chief

What's the cost of a hit single? Almost as much as the costof a miss!

This terrible reality has been giving the music indus-try a headache for some time now.

Because of the high costs involved in promoting a sin-gle, paying a six figure sum for a video and all the associ-ated marketing and promotion costs, labels can still losemoney on even the biggest hit singles. The payback, ofcourse, comes in terms of increased album sales.

During the Billboard/Airplay Monitor Radio Seminar inMiami in September, it was revealed that record companiesin the US can invest as much as $900,000-$L2 million peralbum in promoting singles to radio alone. It is estimatedthat labels spend $1,500-$1,700 per single per station.

In Europe, securing airplay is also an increasinglyexpensive exercise, with promotional costs forever increas-ing. In the UK, where singles have been loss -leaders forsome time in terms of sales, recent reports in the press sug-

gest that some labels are ready to include the provision inartists' contracts that they won't get any royalty paymentson the first 80,000 units of a single's sales, in order to helpthe label recoup promotion and marketing costs of singles.

Is the situation hopeless? Part of the solution mightsimply rely on new technologies. Instead of sending hun-dreds of CD singles to stations for free, labels now havethe option of sending tracks electronically to stations. These sound files can then be stored directly onto eachstation's hard -drive playout system. It's simple, it's effi-cient and it's cost-effective.

At a consumer level, MP3 files and other digital deliv-ery systems have focused consumers' attention on singletracks once again. The way forwardfor labels is probably to slowly phaseout the commercial releasing of sin-gles as physical sound -carriers andinstead make tracks available fordownloads at a minimal fee, directlyfrom their own web site or throughon-line retailers. That way, labelscan cut down on manufacturing, shipping, handling and distributioncosts, and may even make a profit.

Members of BMG act Another Level recently got a hands-ondemonstration of Fastrax, the digital delivery system which suppliesnew releases to radio, during a presentation to radio programmersand record company promotion executives in Nottingham, England.Pictured (l -r): David Haynes, chairman, IMD/Fastrax; Roger Jacobs, head of regional promotions, BMG; Dane Bowers and Mark Baronfrom Another Level; Dave Shack, director of promotions, RCA; andGary Johnson, sales director, Fastrax.

STOCKHOLM - Latest official RUABaudience figures covering the thirdquarter of the year reveal thatSwedish commercial radio has arecord daily reach of 32.5%, up from31.6% in the previous quarter.

Stations provided by public broad-caster Sveriges Radio (SR) still domi-nate with a combined daily reach of54.9%, but the commercial sector hastaken 0.9% of SR's listenership dur-ing the summer months.

"This looks like a new trend, withcommercial radio gaining in populari-ty again after a few years," says Chris-ter Jungeryd, managing director ofSwedish commercial radio organisa-tion RU Radioutgivareftireningen. "Inthe critical 20-34 age group we're nowwidening the gap with public radio -some 50.2% in this age group prefercommercial radio to Sveriges Radio."

Nationally, the biggest gainer in theRUAB survey was Hot AC -formatted

Rix FM, which for the first time crossesthe 10% daily reach barrier to 10.1%.Public CHR station SR P3 remains thecountry's most listened -to music stationoverall, although it saw its daily reachdecline from 14.3% to 13.9% quarter -on -quarter.

In the competitive Stockholmmarket, Rix's CHR/dance formattedsister station Power Hit Radio -available only in Stockholm andGothenburg -further increased itslead among commercial broadcastersin the capital city, from 10% to 10.6%.Power has now overtaken P3 (10.5%)in Stockholm, and it has alsoincreased its lead over its main com-mercial rival, NRJ's Energy (8%).

The other two "winners" in Stock-holm were SBS-owned classic rockoutfit 106.7 Rockklassiker (up from4.1% to 4.7%), and '60s Gold stationVinyl 107, up from 5.0% to 5.3%. Pub-lic local full -service station SR P5Radio Stockholm is still the capital'smost popular station overall at 17.8%.

    Catalan -languagestations plannedby Howell Llewellyn

MADRID - Spain's north-easternregion of Catalonia is to get its firstCatalan -speaking commercial radiostations.

The 18 -station Ona Catalana andthree -station Zeta publishing groupagreed on October 29 to set up the asyet unnamed network in Barcelona, which will incorporate both musicand news/talk stations.

Public Catalan -language stationsalready exist, run by the regionalgovernment or Generalitat, which iscontrolled by Catalan nationalists.Ona Catalana managing directorBartomeu Espadale says: "We havespoken to many groups [interested inworking with us], but the best pro-posal was Zeta's, as it coincides withour existing [Spanish -language]radio model which includes two typesof format -music and talk."

A Zeta spokesman said his groupwanted to help "alleviate one of thegreat deficits of radio in Catalonia, characterised by the lack of a power-ful and professional network capableof competing in Catalan with net-works that transmit in Spanish."

According to third-quarterratings from Fessel Gfk, pub-lic CHR station 03 remainedsteady as the powerhouse sta-tion in the capital, with a 34%market share. The market'sother main public station, gold -formatted Radio Wien, strengthened its hold on sec-ond place, up 2% to a 17%market share.

Vienna's leading commer-cial station, AC/Gold 88.6 sawits market share slide to 12%.But 88.6 general managerBernd Sebor says he's stillpleased with the results. "Itwas a good test overall. We'renumber one in Vienna andnumber one in Lower Austria,in a competitive market." Theremaining commercial sta-tions gained market sharesranging from 4% to 1%.

`Endurance' contest highlightsRadio 2's terrestrial presenceby Charles Ferro

COPENHAGEN - Danish Hot AC sta-tion Radio 2 is using contest formatsdevised by its US parent companyClear Channel Communications toraise awareness that the station isnow broadcasting terrestrially.

Clear Channel is enjoying anincreased presence in Europe follow-ing its purchase of a 50%stake in Norwegian ACbroadcaster Radio 1(M&M, October 16), andis also rumoured to beamong the interestedparties in UK rock sta-tion Virgin Radio. Itsnext immediate target, though, isunderstood to lie in Sweden.

Replicating a contest conceptundertaken by a US -based ClearChannel station, Radio 2 is givingaway a Ford Mondeo to the listenerwho manages to sit in a car for thelongest.

Radio 2 is currently recruiting 12contestants for the competition, whose profiles and photos will beposted on the station's new website(www.radio2.dk). Four people will beplaced in three cars, where they willbe unable to read, listen to the radio,

or wind down the windows. Webcamswill provide consistent coverage oftheir progress.

Radio 2 managing director JimReceveur explains: "They get a fiveminute break every three hours andwon't know what's hap-pening in the other cars. There will be one mobile

phone ineach car, butonly our[morningshow] pre-senter GeorgJuhlin, whois co-ordinat-

ing the contest, will havethe numbers."

Radio 2 began broad-casting on terrestrial fre-quencies in August fromCopenhagen, Aarhus andOdense, having previous-ly been confined tonational cable and satel-lite distribution.

Gallup ratings from the summershowed that Radio 2 had 400,000weekly listeners via cable and satel-lite prior to the terrestrial switch -on.Says Receveur: "We can see from

recent contests we have held thataround 60% of our callers are terres-trial listeners. If that is an accurateindication, we will have doubled ournumber of listeners since terrestrialbroadcasts began. We are predicting

that, by January 1,we will have onemillion weekly lis-teners, making usthe largest radionetwork in Den-mark."

Radio 2 head ofprogramming JanBrodde says thatDenmark's recordcompanies arehappy to have Radio2 on the air terres-trially, "and there'sa lot of support com-ing from them."

Jesper Grun-dahl, radio promo-tions manager atUniversal Music

Denmark, is one of those supporters."The more extensive Radio 2's reach, the better it is for us, as we use Radio2 to promote specific artists such asBryan Adams and Sting," he says.

CD singles onthe up in Italyby Mark Dezzani

MILAN - CD singles shipped in Italyare up 45.9% in value and 52.9% inunits, according to figures for the firsthalf of 1999 released by the country'sIFPI-recognised music body FIMI.

Compiled by the accounting firmPrice Waterhouse, the figures alsoshow that, despite the growth of CDsingles, the rest of Italy's music mar-ket was flat for the first half of theyear. Some 2.45 million CD singleunits were shipped out of a total of27.3m. Total value was lire 354.2bn(euros 182.93m).

The figures show some gains -4.04% in units and 2.32% in valueagainst the same period last year-but director general of FIMI, EnzoMazza, says these are attributableto changes in the certification sys-tem which now incorporates a widersample to reflect the ever -diversify-ing ways that consumers buy music. The figures are the first to includesales statistics from non-traditionalretail outlets such as newstands, multi -media products and homevideos.

"Considering the wider samplefor compiling the statistics, the Ital-ian market showed no growth," com-ments Enzo Mazza. "The growth inItalian repertoire confirms a contin-ued strong investment by the indus-try in Italian artists."

Brussels takes the long viewEuropean radio broad-casters gathered inBrussels last month for theseventh NAB Europe con-ference, organised by theUS National Association ofBroadcasters. Although ahoped -for delegation fromthe European Commissionfailed to materialise, therewas nevertheless animpressive list of hot topicsand powerful executives, with a real focus on someof the longer -term issuesfacing radio.

While the Europeanradio industry is verymuch in a growthphase at the moment, many experts (partic-

ularly those looking in from the US)still consider there is a long road totravel before the market reaches fullmaturity.

One of the obstacles slowing downthat journey is regulation, which

reared its unsexy head at a number ofthis year's sessions. In his addressduring the "European Radio in theNew Millennium" panel, PeterBenson, managing director ofLuxembourg -based TV and radiogroup SBS, claimedthat "regulation isthe greatest limita-tion to the growth ofradio [in Europe]."

Taking the ex-ample of Germany,RTL Radio Ger-many managingdirector JurgenFilla called for "onesingle regulator for[frequency] licens-ing nationwide,"instead of the current 15regional regulatory bodies.

Just another product?During his presentation on"Ownership and European Reg-ulation," Ralph Bernard, chairman ofthe UK's GWR Group, said that "thedecisions of governments and regula-tors will be crucial. If radio is notallowed to grow, it risks being swal-lowed up [by non -radio businesses],losing its cultural distinctiveness andbecoming just another product."

At the core of Bernard's desire for

    separate

    Ralph Bernard

regulatory changes is his call for morerelaxed ownership rules, basedaround share of "voice" (audience).Backed by US data, he dismissed theargument which says that consolida-tion equals less diversity of program-

ming. "Larger owner-ship groups meanmore diversity," heargued. "One ownerwill distribute hisstations to minimiseoverlap. Successfulstations will supportniche formats, spreading costs overa range of services."

One of the conse-quences of consolida-tion, of course, is that

managing and programme directorssuddenly find themselves in charge ofseveral stations rather than just oneor two. In a session designed to tacklethe problems of "ProgrammingMultiple Stations Within a Group,"Keith Pringle-group programmedirector at the UK's ChrysalisRadio-reminded delegates that, whatever the structure and size of anindividual radio station or grouping,it was ultimately "good people whichmakes good radio." He revealed thatthe Chrysalis group's guiding philoso-phies were "think small to win big,"

and that "re-search holdsthe key to suc-cess, but it'sthe correct in-terpretation [ofdata] whichturns that key."

NRJ's groupprogrammedirectorChristopheSabot soundeda controversialnote when stat-ing his beliefthat, funda-mentally,NRJ's centrally programmed CHRformat could be rolled out successful-ly all over Europe, irrespective of dif-ferent local cultures.

Andrew Manderstam, a director ofthe France -based EDI radio group, countered that while this may be truefor the younger audience, where acommon European "youth culture"clearly exists, such an approachwould not be appropriate in program-ming stations for older listeners indifferent European countries.

There was some discussion alongthe lines of "what does a programmedirector at a local station owned by acentralised group actually do?"

  • - RAO 0 ACTIVEPringle responded that, with a tradi-tional programmer's job, there werealways "too many things to do," sothat being relieved from the responsi-bility of, say, picking music can allowthe programmer to concentrate moreintensively on other important roles, such as coaching air talent.

Tips from the topThe kinds of tasks which all program-mers (whether part of a big group or

not) are generallyrequired to performwere covered duringthe "Programmers'Toolbox" session, fea-turing US consultantDennis Clark (vice-president, MorningShows Inc) and GilesSquire, group pro-gramme director of the UK's WirelessGroup. One of Squire's top tips wasthat presenters should be encour-aged-and given incentives-to travelaround their local area by publictransport rather than car, so they canget more of a feel for the stations'broadcast area, and to hear the kindof things the local population is talk-ing about.

Squire also suggested that, everyso often, programmers should not gointo work and instead spend a wholeday listening to their station at home. This, he said, frequently highlightsshortcomings which they can easilymiss on a day-to-day office basis.

Clark emphasised the need for pro-grammers to always give feedback totheir air talent. "They wanna knowwhat you think," he said. "If theydon't hear that, it's the equivalent of astand-up comic who has to wait threemonths for a laugh."

Bathe for the futureThroughout the conference, thereseemed to be a kind of "digital radioversus Internet radio" beauty contestgoing on, although many would arguethat the two technologies are by nomeans incompatible.

Speaking on a panel provocativelyentitled "DAB: The Future WasYesterday?" Phil Riley, chief executiveof the UK's Chrysalis Radio group, reflected that "it's sad that theAmericans are turning their back ondigital radio. For Joe Punter, it willjust mean a better radio."

GWR's Ralph Bernard made a pas-sionate case for digital radio, inform-ing the audience about the launch ofGWR's digital platform Digital One onNovember 15, which will include two

new services, the CHR-formattedCore and classic rock station PlanetRock (M&M, October 30).

Mike McEwen, president of theWorld DAB Forum, was cautiouslyoptimistic about the progress beingmade by digital. "With a core groupincluding France, Germany and theUK moving [on digital radio], you canhave the rest of Europe move along, because you have reached a criticalmass."

But there were plenty of digitalradio sceptics to be found around theconference halls. RTL Germany'sJurgen Filla claimed that "broadcast-ers don't really like the [digital radio]technology, because it is very expen-sive. Digital radio has no advantagesfor us, but there's a strong politicallobby." CLT-UFA vice president ofradio operations Peter Waak was evenmore blunt with his comment: "Weare all pro -technology, but why sup -

"We are the mainthreat to our future if

    we lack creativity andinnovation"

    vic

    - Peter Waak,e president, radio operations,

    CLT-UFA

port a technology which is already 12years old?"

Waak went on to say that it's nottechnology or even regulation whichis the main danger for Europeanbroadcasters. "We are the main threatto our future if we lack creativity andinnovation," he contended. "With allthe new technologies, we face the riskof losing focus on what we are. We areabout entertainment, companionship. But if we don't adapt, someone willsuperserve our listeners. We have tobe the first in the new areas."

Net closing in?Several speakers pointed out that, with the emergence of devices such asSonicbox and Kerbango early nextyear, which will enable the listener toenjoy portable Internet radio for thefirst time, the future is starting verysoon.

Larry Rosin, president of US con-sultancy Edison Research, said thatalthough research shows that, formost people, Internet radio is still anovelty, awareness levels of the possi-bilities are high. According to Rosin, radio stations should stream theiraudio now and promote it on air as an"anywhere alternative" to terrestriallistening.

SBS managing director PeterBenson noted that "a good web siteoffers you major packaging opportuni-ties for [advertising] clients. There isa new range of elements that canmake your radio more attractive."However, he cautioned stations thatthey "can't expect to have some rev-enues if they don't put in some invest-ment. And you won't get revenuesimmediately. But in the next two tothree years the Internet will provide

important additional revenues."Being an NAB -organised event,

there was no shortage of Americanswho had made the tripto Brussels to brushup their knowledge ofthe European mar-ket-some with an eyeto making first or fur-ther investments inEurope.

In the session"European RadioInvestments: Worth ItIn The End?" RandallBongarten, presidentof US group EmmisInternational, admit-ted that Europe is oneof the key areas of expansion for hisgroup.

Bongarten admitted, however, thatoverseas expansion requires "culturaladaptation" and "more risks" forinvestors. "Each time you venture outof your home territory, you face newchallenges," he said. "Everything I'velearned about the US market in thepast 25 years, I have to learn it againfor each territory."

Enter the introduct'There's often a criticism levelled atradio conferences such as NABEurope that delegates don't actuallyget to hear much during the sessionsof what everybody's ultimately therefor-namely radio station output.

To that end, one of the most inter-

esting sessions was on station pro-duction, during which delegates weretreated to some fine examples of

what has becomemusic radio's hottestcraze-"powerintros," or "introd-ucts." These are sta-tion idents sung ascustom accapellas ina variety of keys inorder that they can beplayed over the introsof current chart hits,in such a way as theyappear to form aseamless part of thetrack itself. "The ideais to link the name of

the station to the song itself,"explained Bart van Gogh, creativedirector of Netherlands -based TopFormat productions, "so that whenyour listener next hears that song-even if it's on another radio station-they will automatically think of yourstation."

A further advantage of introductscompared to traditional jingles, claimed Van Gogh, is that they offera seamless flow with no interruptionto the music. They are particularlyeffective in smoothly exiting a com-mercial break and getting straightinto the next song, while still gettingthe all-important station ident on air.

    French Arena goes higher

MO' VOCALSA jaunty disco funk tune with a lilting vocal, JuniorSanchez featuring Dajae's B With U (Manifesto/UK) isclassic crossover material. The vocal versions, including asplendid Rhythm Masters remix, feature an inspirationallead vocal by Dajae supported by a rich, string -heavy butupful sound. Meanwhile the dub versions, which are nowestablished favourites on transatlantic dancefloors, couldconceivably build enough momentum for European chartaction following a UK top 40 pop crossover last month.

MO' FUNKOn their latest outing, The Groovy Thang (ClevelandCity/UK), Minimal Funk have gone for the disco/supaflysound. Massed strings accompanied by a vocoder hook andsemi -spoken vocal interludes are the mainstays of the JayVegas edit, the version with most crossover potential. Asecond edit, by Beatmunga, again clocks in at a radiofriendly 3'30", but here the track has been given a thumpy, subterranean hard house makeover. Plenty of strings andhooks, but the groove is deeper and dirtier, providing aneffective counterpoint to the niceties of the music.

MO' FUNIn a musical climate so thoroughly dominated by instru-mental material it makes for a pleasant surprise to find arecord that is both groovy and shouty. Such is the casewith Doctor Olive's First Dee -Jay On The Moon(Bazoline/France). The album kicks off with a clutch oftracks featuring an uncredited soul voice which one mustsuppose is, at least some of the time, that of Doctor Olive.

There is a thread of dance music history runningthrough First Dee -Jay..., with references to disco, funk, souland early R&B, that makes for a thoroughly satisfying lis-tening or dancing experience. This historical basis has thenbeen peppered with vocal samples, twisted orchestralbreaks and moody guitar to create eclectic dance music thatis both jokey underground and serious pop.

LESS JAZZWhen news leaked out some months back that Dutch tech -no producer Orlando Voorn was working on drum'n'bassmaterial, the fact that this Detroit -style purist was chang-

ing tack was seen as a sign of apotential return to form. Voorn'smusical output of industrial -strength tracks had becomeincreasingly glacial.

The result, an album calledRedeye (Boudisque Record-ing/Netherlands), has rightly beenhailed as something of a meisterw-erk. "The press reviews have beenvery positive," says Boudisque joint

MD/A&R director Roel Kruize. "And Orlando is doing aone hour special on Club Lek on VPRO Radio in December, plus appearing on VPRO TV's Lola Di Musica." FeaturingVoorn and fellow Dutch producer Speedy J, the TV showfollows the separate studio work of the two artists produc-ing a track using the same three samples provided by theVPRO. The two resulting tunes will be premiered at theend of the show. "For an underground release Redeye isgetting plenty of media coverage," comments Kruize. "Andearly retail reports [sales and distribution are handled byZomba in Benelux] indicate that sales are looking healthytoot" A first single, Fresh Sweet Song, is out in January.

Tina Arena is In Deep with the French mar-ket. The Australian chanteuse is experienc-ing a career upturn thanks to a little ententecordiale. Aller Plus Haut, from the Frenchedition of her Columbia album In Deep, lastweek climbed to number 2 there and hastaken sales of the setbeyond 270,000 copies, clos-ing in on the platinummark of 300,000.

In Deep was released inthe summer of 1998 in theUK and in October acrossEurope, but failed to ignitein many territories. Thiswas despite its massivesales success in Australia, where Arena is now the all-time bestselling femaleartist, and the fact that1995's Don't Ask had sold 2million copies globally andincluded such hits asChains and Heaven HelpMy Heart.

The new French successis mostly the result of keyTV promotion, according toColumbia France productmanager/international Sabine Feutrel.Initially, she says, stations didn't play Arena, except for AC network Cherie FM, which wason board from the start with her track fromthe Zorro movie, the duet with Marc AnthonyI Want To Spend My Lifetime Loving You,which went on to sell 350,000 copies in

France. "But most of all, the success is due toher commitment," says Feutrel. "Tina came toFrance four or five times and spent two tothree weeks here each time."

Nathalie Bismuth, music programmer atCherie FM, was impressed from the outsetwith Arena's "voice, image, this combinationof great melodies and sensual and aggressive

performances. We're alsoproud to have been at theorigin of a success of theartist-this is alwaysrewarding," she adds.

Aller Plus Haut resultedfrom one of Arena's FrenchTV appearances. RobertGoldman, brother and man-ager of top -selling Sonyartist Jean -Jacques Gold-man, saw her and "liked hervoice and personality,"recalls Feutrel. Soon aftertheir encounter, they wentinto the studio and sherecorded the track, which hewrote.

Arena herself was com-fortable with the project."I'm a very open human -being," she says. "You can'tafford to be narrow-minded

in what you're doing, that's what sifts out thegirls from the women. My whole thing is, aslong as I'm afloat, I'm very happy."

Arena is also more than afloat in Italy, where Segnali Di Fumo, a duet with SonyItaly platinum -seller Luca Barbarossa for hismusica e parole album, is an airplay hit.

Wamdue overdue in the UKby Paul Sexton

Creation Records, the home of Oasis, isn'tknown for letting big records slip through itsfingers, but that looks set to happen in theUK this month with one of the majorEuropean singles of the year.

Wamdue Project's King Of My Castle lastweek spent its 39th week on M&M'sEurochart Hot 100 Singles, and has been amajor pop success in Italy, France, Holland,Belgium and most recently Germany, withsales there alone exceeding 600,000 copies. Now it looks as though the UK will join theparty, as Universal's dance arm AM:PM hassecured renewed British rights to the infec-tious track and releases it, with new mixes byBini & Martini and Armin Van Buuren, onNovember 15.

The fight for the UK rights to such a provencrossover was as keen as ever, but the back-ground story to King Of My Castle is rathermore unusual. Wamdue Project is the nom dedisque of 25 -year -old Atlanta -born musicianChris Brann, signed in the US to dance giantsStrictly Rhythm, and the track's first Britishappearance was some 18 months ago, onCreation's now -defunct club -oriented labelEruption, formerly run by DJ, remixer (andnow author) Kris Needs.

AM:PM managing director Dave Lambertpicks up the story of a song that only took offwhen Italian remixer Roy Malone, alsoknown as Walterino, supplied a fresh mix.

"The buzz was all to do with the mix he did forthe Italian label Airplane," says Lambert."That took it from a 98bpm mellow soul tosomething more akin to Ann Lee's 2 Times. They just pitched it up and made it into anaccessible house record."

Lambert had to be patient to secure thetrack for British reissue. "I had to wait forStrictly's deal with Creation to lapse before Icould sign it," he says, noting that theAmerican label already had a distributionagreement in Germany with Universal on theMotor Music label, which helped his cause. "Ihad a lot of dealings with Strictly from mydays with Positiva, onartists like Reel 2 Realand Barbara Tucker."

AM:PM has alsosigned remixer ArminVan Buuren to a solodeal, with a singlecalled Communicationdue in the new year.Meanwhile, BBCRadio 1, Kiss 100 andCapital Radio are allsupporting King OfMy Castle, whichlooks set to giveAM:PM a worthy suc-cessor to its recentpop giant, DJ Jean'sThe Launch, which Lambert says had sold370,000 copies by last week.

WILL SMITHWILLENNIUMColumbiaInternational release date: November 15The master of radio -friendly rapreturns with an album of songs justbegging to be released as singles.Despite an array of collaborationswith artists from the more serious

end of the rap and hip -hop spectrum-such as DruHill, Lil' Kim and MC Lytc Smith has continuedto play it safe with his formulaic brand of light-weight, humorous rap. CHR programmers will divestraight in, but the set may well prove slightlymore difficult for AC stations. With the first singleWild Wild West having spent three weeks at num-ber one in the Eurochart Hot 100 in July, its suc-cessor, Will 2K, a reworking of the Clash classicRock The Casbah, has a tough act to follow. But itlooks well up to the task, not only securing lastweek's "most added" title across Europe but alsothe highest new entry on the European Radio Top50. Other potential singles by this musical magpieare Can You Feel Me, with its Michael Jacksonsample, and the raunchy Freak This featuring theunmistakable vocal talents of hardcore rapper Lil'Kim. Afro Angel is a sultry, emotive ballad whichbenefits from the dulcet tones of Jada PinkettSmith and should prove to be an evening showfavourite. Willennium is in no way groundbreak-

ing, but will no doubt please Smith's millions -strong fan club. CB

SAVOYMOUNTAINS OF TIMEEMI NorwayInternational release date: n/aA-ha's Paul Waaktaar-Savoyand his wife Lauren frontthis Norwegian -Americanband who have delivered acoherent third release, withwhich they enter the worldof pop after two slightlymore challenging albums. The couple enhance the richness and vibrancy byalternating on lead vocals, and the first track, theupbeat Man In The Park, sets the tone of guitar -based pop, inspired by contemporary Americanrock -top 40 acts. Star, sung and written by Lauren,is a mellow midtempo tune which is brought to lifeby her vocals which also appear on Grind YouDown, a lighthearted, summery track with a classicpop beat. Both tracks, which have already beenreleased as singles in Norway, are suitable for ACand CHR formats. A hint of A-ha-who are set torelease a new album in early 2000-is detectable inseveral harmonies among the guitar riffs, mostly onSee What Becomes and End Of The Line. Sustainingthe band connection even further, A -ha chumMagne Furuholmen plays clavichord on the melan-choly ballad Bottomless Pit. SSD
