ne of my favorite pastimes
is watching historical documentaries. As I was writing this column, I remembered a quote from the American
Experience documentary about Woodrow Wilson. He famously said, “If you want to make enemies, try to change something.” That seemed appropriate for this topic.
And yet, we all know that change is inevitable, and not always as bad as it might seem at first. We’re about to make a change that may not please some of you, but which I hope this column will help you understand.
When digital radio channels became available in 2007, we decided to exploit the new technology and offer additional content to our listeners. We talked to many of our members, and based on their input, built new stations. SpeakEasy (89.5-2) featured national public radio programming we didn’t have room for on our main WHRV 89.5 FM frequency – like the second hour of the Diane Rehm Show, the first hour of On Point, and a long-time listener favorite, Whaddya Know? A drive-time rerun of HearSay with Cathy Lewis. Lots of international news programming. The list goes on.
on the classical music side, we built Connoisseur Classics at 90.3-2 on the WHRo-FM frequency. We have one of the most comprehensive music libraries in the U.S., the pride of our WHRo staff and the envy of classical music stations across the country. Connoisseur Classics became a place for music lovers to hear some of the less-frequently played rare symphonic works, concerts from Wolftrap, band music they might have played back in their school days, movie soundtracks, operas and other esoteric compositions that fall under the broad category of classical music.
These two stations were innovative, intelligent, and in all honesty, a lot of fun to program. And they acquired a small, loyal listenership. In that respect, they were successful.
But as a public media organization that depends heavily on the financial support of listeners, we can’t measure success only by the enthusiasm of a small group. We have a responsibility to use our members’ contributions as judiciously and wisely as possible, and we take that responsibility very seriously.
Thus, from time to time, we take stock of all of our programming, to see if anything needs refreshing, revising or eliminating, to make sure we are being the most effective stewards of member dollars. It’s nothing new; broadcasters have been doing it, out of necessity, for years.
What we’ve found is that yearly increases in programming costs, combined with the added manpower that’s required to keep SpeakEasy and Connoisseur Classics running full time, have made it necessary for us to make a change. The rising costs associated with keeping these services going aren’t representative of the best value for our members’ financial support.
So Connoisseur Classics and SpeakEasy will cease at the end of June, 2014. We’ll devote our time and energy – and your membership dollars – to offering more rich content than ever. We’re going to take the best elements of Connoisseur Classics straight to Raymond Jones’s Evening Classics programming on 90.3. You can also look to our website – whro.org – for Sondra Woodward’s beloved Reel Sound as the new repository for all things film music. You’ll find other valuable content there as well. I hope you’ll visit often.
Change may be inevitable, but it’s often for the better. We hope you’ll find that true as well.

O
ow that a particularly grueling Winter is finally behind us, and Spring—short as it was is winding down, Summer approaches with
full force.
Everywhere you look, people appear excited. Making it through last Winter was a badge of honor for us all, and now it’s time to celebrate the sun, heat, and the fun that our community offers so abundantly. Some people are looking forward to sailing, or fishing, taking long walks through our beautiful parks, or along the beaches. Whatever your fancy, it’s time to enjoy the things you love.
Love is often credited as the most powerful and elusive emotion. At WHRo, we often hear people talk about the programs they love. Downton Abbey has been a run-away success, attracting an audience that has surprised everyone. You have your
own favorites, programming you’re passionate about among the radio and television shows WHRo brings you throughout the year.
June is your chance to Support What You Love. We’re bringing our Radio and TV membership drives closer and shortening the time we are on the air so that you, our viewers and listeners celebrate what you love about public media. The funds we need to raise to keep bringing this great programming to you hasn’t gotten any less so we hope you’ll work with us to make the most of the time we are showcasing some of the best of what WHRo offers all year long.
Look for documentaries like Happy, which explores what makes people really happy, and viewer favorites like a special Doc Martin
movie. You’ll see concerts with Billy Joel, The grateful Dead, Journey, and Music From the 50’s and 60’s. Showcase is truly a special celebration of Public Television.
Later in June, we’ll kick off our Radio Drive, with the programs and people you love all year Round. our nPR news standards, Morning Edition and All Things Considered, our own Cathy Lewsis and Barbara Hamm Lee, and the best music that you simply cannot find anywhere else –Blues, Alternative, Classical, opera, Jazz, and Folk – there’s just so much to love.

WHRo Education
e recently welcomed twelve of the area’s most creative
young minds into our studio for the 2014 WHRo Young
Storytellers Awards, an event that congratulates local children for writing and illustrating their own original stories and submitting them in the PBS Kids Writers Contest.
This year, we received over 300 entries from local students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Their stories could have been fact or fiction, poetry or prose. Stories were judged on originality, creative expression, storytelling and integration of illustrations, and one first and second place winner were chosen from each grade level.
our winners stretched their imaginations to come up with stories about everything from sneaky dogs, to compassionate cats, to friendly leprechauns, to ferocious dragons. In My Leprechaun Friends, Lorie Henry from Sewells Point Elementary sets out to trap a leprechaun, and she ends up catching a whole new group of friends.
First grade winner, Preston Mullins, wrote The Adventures of Mappy, where Mappy (a paper map of South America) is desperate to visit the other continents. After failed attempts to tunnel through the ground and fly on a paper plane, Mappy discovers that he can float on water, and he happily floats along while travelling the world.
All of the winners and their families were invited to attend our awards ceremony, where each child was honored at a special reception and recorded in the WHRo television studio reading their winning entry. These young storytellers can be viewed presenting their creative tales on the WHRo Education website at:

Let’s EatVegan Fitby Shannon Bowmanonline Content and Social Media [email protected]
h
WHRO’s very own chef, Mary Joe Wilfong recently
interviewed Attila Hildmann, European celebrity chef,
about quality foods, setting goals for a healthy lifestyle and his upcoming book, Vegan for Fit. Hildmann’s inspiring story and delicious recipes have motivated huge numbers of people to explore a new lifestyle. The aspiring fitness fan has transformed vegan cuisine with this message: a vegan diet is not only healthy, but also full of variety, creativity, and taste.
After losing his father to a shocking heart attack due to malnutrition, Attila converted to a vegan diet and lost 77 lbs! Both a physical and a mental transformation, Attila looks better, feels fitter, and is more motivated and energetic throughout the day. And with his non-dogmatic views, he represents a new generation of people
who want to eat healthy foods, free of factory farming and food products manipulated by the food industry.
“It’s not about having to eat 100 percent vegan, but rather simply about
getting started,” says Attila. “You might think that you’re not really accomplishing anything. But that’s just not true. Even if you only eat a vegan diet one day a week, you’ll still be doing a lot for your own health. You’ll decrease your intake of cholesterol by about 15 percent and your body will have less work breaking down animal products.”
Did you know that a vegan diet could significantly help lower the risk of cancer? Many fruits and vegetables have been scientifically proven to help lower this risk. It is helpful for anti-aging purposes, cancer prevention, or for strengthening your immune and cardiovascular system. These healthy foods don’t contain cholesterol, hormones, antibiotics, flavor enhancers, or other additives.
“Even though the latest insights regarding nutrition are sometimes contradictory, I don’t think my doctor will ever tell me, ‘Attila, the latest scientific studies suggest that people need to eat more meat and animal fats. I’m going to give you a prescription for one hot dog per day so that you can quickly get healthy.’”
To learn more about Attila Hildmann and to hear the interview, please go to whro.org/LetsEat.

A Different WAy to think About Aging
For a personal consultation with our senior care navigator call (757) 856-7030 or visit
riversideonline.com/services/seniors.
It’s about honoring and supporting what people want as they get older — “As I age, I will control my destiny in a place of my choosing.” Seems simple enough. But in the world of healthcare where “we know best” has been the tradition, asking people what they value as they get older is a true innovation that’s making a difference in the lives of thousands.
It’s an approach that promises to change the way people think about aging. And it all begins by asking what matters most. That’s what happens at Riverside, where we have world class physicians and the most comprehensive network of services in the state dedicated to helping you reach your life goals as you age.
As I age, I will control my destiny in a place
of my choosing.

WHRo Voicemagine you couldn’t do what you’re doing right now: read a piece of printed material. Imagine you couldn’t hold a
newspaper in your hands, or see it if you could. Imagine you couldn’t scan the grocery store specials each week to plan your family’s shopping, read the sports, or find out when holiday trash collection will be scheduled. Many people in our community don’t have to imagine these things: they’re a daily reality.
More than 30 years ago, WHRo established a radio reading service to provide what national radio and TV news coverage can’t: the flavor of community life that’s best represented in the pages of a local newspaper. The Voice provides volunteers reading The Virginian-Pilot and The Daily Press every day of the year, including local grocery store ads once a week.
To learn more or to arrange for a specially programmed receiver, call the Voice Manager, Sharman goode-Hurd, at at 757.889.9430. To listen to this service, visit whro.org/voice.

We had so much fun with last October’s event, we’ve decided to do it again! The out of the Box Festival will help put the “fun” in fundraiser with a free concert by some of Hampton Roads’ best artists Saturday June 14th on the grounds of the WHRo complex on Hampton Blvd in norfolk! The concert will kick off a week-long pledge drive on 89.5 WHRV and you can show your support

A former conductor of the Virginia Symphony was sitting in our studio once, listening to music. In the midst of the piece, he said, simply, “How could we live without this?” How indeed? What would we do without Mozart to brighten our days, without Bach to lift our spirits? Most of our listeners share the maestro’s opinion of the need for classical music in their lives, and they understand the need to support our radio station. We look forward to hearing from them during our membership drive, starting on the 14th, so that we all can live with great music as part of our lives.

The Attucks Theatre rang out with classical music and raucous cheers when the popular “From the Top” radio series came back to town last month as part of the Virginia Arts Festival. The show featured the Festival’s Rhythm Project All-Stars and two very talented young brothers from newport news, cellist Sterling Elliott and violinist Brandon Elliott. The program was recorded for nation-wide broadcast and will be heard on Saturday, June 28 at noon on WHRo-FM. Tune in and be treated to performances by some extraordinary young, home-town musicians.
just by coming out enjoying these local musicians from 1-5pm.
You’ll see The Framers, Karl Werne, Skye Zentz, Major and the Monbacks, Logan Vath and Planet Full of Blues. They’ve all had great albums that you’ve heard on out of the Box; the show known for not only playing new rock, Americana and blues but for exposing local artists’ original music on public radio. The show’s host, Paul Shugrue will emcee the event and will be broadcasting some of the performances live on the radio. There will be food trucks, other concessions and your friends and neighbors hanging out!
It’s a free concert all afternoon, so bring your lawn chairs, your adventuresome musical spirit and immerse yourself in the Hampton Roads music scene Saturday June 14th at WHRo!

“I support WHRO, because it’s always been a part of my life and I want to do whatever I can to help keep it around forever. WHRO radio exposed me to great music as a boy, and the wonder of BBC television as a teenager. WHRO is now becoming a big part of my three boys’ lives (my 5 year old even knows who Diane Rehm is!) Who wouldn’t want to help en-sure that WHRO is here for generations to come?”
- Mr. Brendan Tompkins WHRO Leadership Circle Member
Harry & Cass Knecht, residents since 2006
When we say “Welcome to the best neighborhood,” we really mean it.Atlantic Shores voted Best Retirement Community.
e are extremely proud to learn that readers of Virginia Living magazine say the same thing that our residents have always said – that Atlantic Shores is the best retirement community in this part of Virginia. It is an honor to be so recognized, and it is gratifying to all the people who work so hard here, every day, to make it true. But, as we always say when gracious awards come our way, the real winners are our residents.
Now non-residents can be winners, too. Buy soon and pay no monthly service fees for a year! For a limited time when you become an Atlantic Shores owner, you’ll get even more benefits than our community’s beauty, security and active event schedule. Choose from a variety of beautiful apartment homes or villas and you can take advantage of our limited-time “Welcome to the Neighborhood” offer that will give you significant cost savings. Here’s how it works: New owners will be entitled to 12 months with NO service fees. And, you can decide when to take advantage of the offer. Start your fee-free months immediately, or you can “bank” the offer and go fee-free at a later date of your choosing.
To give you an idea of the substantial value of this offer, here are just a few of the things that are covered in Atlantic Shores service fees: Award-winning dining, 24-hour security and EMT services, utilities, housekeeping, landscaping and more. With “Welcome to the Neighborhood,” it’s all free for a year.
This is a very limited-time offer, so don’t delay. If you’ve considered a move to Atlantic Shores, there may never be a better time. Come visit our neighborhood today and we’ll show you a “welcome” like no one else.
Call your Atlantic Shores sales counselor, or for more details go to: AtlanticShoresLiving.com.
Your housewarming gift awaits. Don’t let it slip away!
