The Monthly Newsletter of Holy TrinitySt. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church The Voice Volume : 17 Number : 8 Month : August 2017 Note: As the Fast for the Holy Dormion of the Theotokos (Aug. 1 through Aug. 15) begins, we shall chant the Small Paraklesis Canon in honor of the Mother of God. The following is a historical summary of the Small Paraklesis Service. There are two forms of the Paraklesis Canon to the Theotokos: the Small Paraklesis which was composed by Theosteriktos the Monk in the 9th century (or some say Theophanes), and the Great Paraklesis. During the majority of the year, only the Small Paraklesis to the Theotokos is chanted. However, during the Dormion Fast (August 1—14), the Typikon prescribes that the Small and Great Paraklesis be chanted on alternate evenings, according to the following regula- ons: - If August 1st falls on a Monday through Friday, the cycle begins with the Small Paraklesis. If August 1st falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the cycle begins with the Great Paraklesis. - On the eves of Sundays (i.e., Saturday nights) and on the eve of the Transfiguraon (the night of August 5) the Paraklesis is omied. - On Sunday nights, the Great Paraklesis is always used unless it is the eve of Transfiguraon. In the Russian Orthodox Church, the equivalent of a Paraklesis is the Moleben, which is similar in structure, except that the canon is omied, retaining only the refrains and Irmoi of the third, sixth and ninth odes. When the full service itself is performed, it is called the "Supplicatory Canon" (Molebnyj Kanon). The reason these services are called "Paraklesis" (Supplicaon) is because the faithful gather to supplicate the Theotokos to intercede on their behalf to her Son and our God for our salvaon and for the relief of anything that burdens and ails us. They are the prayers of suffer- ing and hurng children addressed to their compassionate Mother, who is their only hope, protectress, and surety in me of need. According to liturgical Professor John Fountoulis, even though the two Canons to the Theotokos are differenated with the tle "Small" and "Great", in fact they have the same number of Troparia, both having thirty-two with four in each Ode. However the Great Canon is more extensive, though this does not jusfy the epithet. The real reason seems to be that the Great Canon is chanted in a more fesve tone during the Dormion Fast than the Small Canon, as shown in the Dismissal Hymns which begin: "O you Apostles from afar, being now gathered together here in the village of Gethsemane, lay my body in burial; and You, my Son and my God, receive my spirit." Lile research has been done on the historical circumstances that led to the poetry of the two Canons and the final morphology of the two Supplicaons. Regarding the Great Supplicaon Service, we have sufficient tesmony to its authorship. The poet was Theodore II Doukas Laskaris, Emper- or of Nicaea. He was an emperor in exile who reigned from 1254 to 1258 AD following the fall of Constannople to the Frankish Crusaders in 1204. Regarding this history, see The History of the Great Paraklesis (Supplicaon) Canon to the Theotokos. The Authorship and Origins of the Small Paraklesis Canon The Small Supplicaon Service is older than the Great Supplicaon Service and its authorship is aributed by some to Theosteriktos the Monk, who lived in the ninth century. Others speculate it to be the work of Metropolitan Theophanes the Confessor of Nicaea who lived in the same century. Some even put forward St. John the Damascene as the composer. In the liturgical book Horologion it simply states as the author: "A poem of Theosteriktos the Monk. Others support Theophanes." Some say that these two names actually belonged to the same person; Theophanes was the name of Theosteriktos before he became a monk.

Recent research on the authorship of the Small Paraklesis state that it was authored by Saint Theosteriktos the Confessor. He used the previously authored Canon to the Theotokos by Theophanos the Branded and other liturgical and ecclesiastical sources to compose the Small Paraklesis. The Canon of Theophanes the Branded was used as the first canon of Matins on the feasts of major saints. In turn, The-ophanes the Branded used previously existent verses from the Canon of St. John the Damascene which he wrote for the feast of the Rais-ing of Lazarus to write his hymns. Specifically he borrowed the following Eirmos: 1, 3, 6, and 7 Odes. The rest he either composed himself or borrowed from other liturgical sources. In this way, the Small Paraklesis Canon took a similar form and shape as that of the Great Paraklesis Canon.

PANEGYRI 2017 By Eugene Nicholas

THANK YOU!

- To God, who once again watched over our Parish and blessed us with a wonderful Panegyri weekend. - To Fr. Mark and Fr. William, whose spiritual leadership gave us the strength to pre-pare for the weekend, share our heritage and culture, and allow our guests to learn more about our Orthodox Christian faith. - To all of the volunteers who committed their time and talent before, during and after the Panegyri, which ensured another successful weekend.

THANKFUL!

Two years ago, we had a similar situation on Friday. However, this year was much worse. We are so blessed that God granted us two of the best days of the summer. We had record sales on Saturday and Sunday, finishing the weekend with above average sales. This is amazing considering our Friday results. I plan to share final results in the September Voice or at the Fall General Assembly in October.

It is difficult to put into words the support given to me by my family and fellow parish-ioners. I am thankful to God for allowing me to be a part of our community. I am blessed and thankful for the people he has placed in my life.

Thank you to our leadership team, all the chair people and volunteers who made our 43rd Panegyri a success!

Congratulations to Fr. William and

Presvytera Elizabeth

Fr. William has been assigned by His Eminence Metropolitan NICHOLAS to Holy Mother Queen of All/Panagia Pantovasilissa Greek Orthodox Church in Lexington, Kentucky. Fr. William and Presvytera Elizabeth will begin their ministry in Lexington on August 1st. On behalf of our entire Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas family, we thank them for sharing they lives with us and wish them all the best with their new ministry.

OVER FIFTY CLUB…Ann Jonson

We would like to thank Bill Tsacalis for taking our picture of the Over Fifty Club, at the April luncheon. He also gave all of us a picture at no charge. Thank you again!

In May, we had 27 that went to Romano’s Macaroni Grill. We had a little problem with not enough servers, but the manager was very generous in giving us all $5.00 off of our luncheon. It just took them awhile to serve us, but it turned out fine. No one seemed to care.

Also, we would like to thank Tony and Antoinette Caneris for the beautiful vases for the tables at our luncheons.

Congratulations to Nick Trivett, son of Mike and Matina Trivett, on his marriage to Sarah Ellis.

Also, congratulations on the engagement of Alexis Maria Barnhart to Kevin Romey. Alexis is the granddaughter of Petros and Sofia Rombis.

The next luncheon will be at Church on August 19.

SUNDAY CHURCH SCHOOL…Peggy Kehayes

As, we start to prepare for a new school year here are a few announcements from SCS: on Sunday, August 27th there will be a backpack blessing service so all students in school please bring your backpack’s to Church to receive a special blessing from Fr. Mark and Fr. William. Also, the first day of Sunday Church School will be on September 10th. On the first day of class the students will go DIRECTLY to SCS at 9:30 a.m. Then they will go the Church to receive Holy Commun-ion as a class and will sit together in designated pews. We are all so pleased and should be so proud of the way our Church Family came together and put our best foot forward to host our 2017 Panegyri. There were so many who were involved and thanks to all who helped out in making this year’s Panegyri another success.

Philoptochos served dinner at City Gospel on Tuesday, June 13th and we are always greeted with smiles and apprecia-tion. If you would like to experience the face of joy, you are more than welcome to join us on August 8th. Please call Diane Kevin at 513-314-9149 for more details.

Parish Council President's Message by Nick L. Sarakatsannis

I wrote what “Panegyri means to me” last year for the June Voice, and I would like to use it as a

reference to thank the Parish Family for all your hard work. I would like to focus on two letters, R

and I.

Resolve: After Friday’s rain and the record number of crowds to follow, we really showed our

resolve and kept our heads up and produced the best festival of the city.

Involved: Our Parish Family had to be. We worked tirelessly as a team and hit a Grand Slam all weekend.

I am so proud to be a part of this Team. Everyone deserves a big pat on the back for a job well done.

Thanks again to everyone for being so generous with your time and talents to help us showcase our Orthodox faith, Family

Values and Greek Heritage.

This is what Panegyri means to me.

P is for PRIDE. As a member of the Greek Orthodox community, I am very proud that we put on the best and most well

attended ethnic festival in the city. I am sure we all feel this way and that’s why we come together in such numbers to make

this event such a success. Way to go team!

A is for Alithos Anesti. Truly he is risen. If not for Christ, the church wouldn’t exist and neither would this festival. Christos

Anesti!

N is for “Nostimo”. The Greek word for tasty and delicious. Our families and volunteers provide the best food in town!

E is for Everyone. We need everyone’s help to make the Panegyri successful. Our festival is for everyone. We have food and

entertainment for all ages.

G is for Greek Orthodox. That is why I am here as well as many others born and raised in this community.

Y is for Yiasou. I want to propose a toast. “To everyone’s health and to a successful Panegyri weekend!”

R is for Resolve. It always amazes me how as a community we continue to raise the bar no matter what obstacles we face

and work together as a team to produce an even better event. A dear friend to us all continually said each year “It’s going to

be the same as last year but only better!” May Frank’s memory be eternal.

I is for Involved. If you are not, it is time. Working or setting up for the Panegyri is a great way to become a part of the com-

munity and to get to know your fellow parishioners. If you are involved, thanks in advance for making it better each year.

2017 Stewardship List Through 7-21-17

Stewardship Message By Bill Kanelopoulos

I was at work one day when a fellow Parish Council member asked me to write a Stewardship mes-

sage for The Voice. At first my thinking was Oh My! Another responsibility. What am I going to

write? What will people think of me? How will I sound and look before my peers and those I wor-

ship with and see at church every Sunday? FEAR immediately set in. I felt that it would overwhelm

me and set me up for failure. I thought of all the excuses I could come up with to not write about

or be involved in Stewardship. I am too busy. I don’t have the time. I have my own personal financial and other responsibili-

ties, the list goes on.

About this time, I was interrupted by an employee. “There are a couple of Greek fellows here who wanted to say Hello”, she

said. “Great!” I said, thinking it was a good excuse to take a break. As we sat down and talked, I told them that I was asked to

write a message on stewardship for the church. The one fellow responded enthusiastically, “Good For You” and then a short

pause. After a short pause, the other fellow gave me a nice lesson, or lecture if you will, on how the church mishandles mon-

ey, how it has plenty of money, and that he doesn’t contribute because he knows better. He continued his outburst on how

the Church has failed society, getting louder and more passionate about his unbelief and his non-contribution to his former

church. Hearing these negative statements, I became more fearful and vulnerable. I thought that the odds were really stacked

against me. Was this an occasion of my faith being tested?

At that moment, I did the only thing I could think of. I offered a silent prayer to God for wisdom and strength. As the indignant

fellow finished his criticisms of the Church, I simply said “Well, If all of us thought and acted that way about our church, we

probably wouldn’t have one.” Looking upon the face of that bitter man, I began to understand something important. I real-

ized that I once felt the same way. My pride, my ego, and my fear had, at one time, consumed me and stunted my spiritual

growth. It prevented me from giving that which is required of me- my time, my talents, and my treasures. I did not return to

God, in love and thanksgiving, the many blessings He gave to me.

I now recognize that none of these blessings are mine to keep, but they are God’s gifts that are to be shared. I remember the

words of my spiritual mentors, “Give Freely what was Freely Given To You”. I can honestly say that I have been blessed and

have received far more than what I have ever given. So, Who am I to keep it? It was never mine to begin with. I still have a

long way to go. But, if I wake up each day and give a little more, I believe I’m one step closer to doing God’s will. I will better

serve the Lord and His Church. God Bless and Peace be with you all.
