from DECATUR HERITAGE CHRISTIAN ACADEMY 2017 2018 TO GOD BE THE GLORY Our theme this year, To God Be the Glory, has led us to reflect upon all the ways God has poured out His blessings upon Decatur Heritage Christian Academy. As we contem- plate those blessings, it fills us with a spirit of thanksgiving and humility, knowing that we could not have arrived at this point in the life of the school apart from God’s loving providence. In our previous issue, we looked at the people God used to further His work at DHCA. Those people, cre- ated in His image, empowered by His Spirit, and faithfully living out their callings, were crucial to producing the school our current students enjoy today. While all of mankind’s achievements have been attained by standing on the shoulders of those who have gone before, in a Christian institution that is especially true and to be celebrated. Brothers and sisters in Christ have labored over the years so that spiritual descendants might be better prepared for lives of impact. That is a legacy worth celebrating. In addition to being thankful for the people involved in getting us to this point, there is a sense in which people are a future blessing as well. I have often remarked that ours is an interesting business model. We love our students and cherish the time we have with them. However, at some point, we purposefully run them off (hopefully with a diploma in hand). From kindergarten through their senior year, we spend seven hours a day, one hundred eighty days a year, teaching and mentoring and discipling. And then we send them out into the big, wide world, with our role in their development having come to an end. Thankfully, though, that is not the end of our relationship with them. When we say that we are “preparing students for lives of impact,” of course we mean to have them ready for the very next phase in their lives as they walk out the door. With our constituency, those steps may be college, or career, or military service, or any number of other paths the Lord might have for them. Beyond that, though, we would also hope that the character and life lessons we have instilled carry them on into adulthood. Decatur Heritage has been in existence since 1995, and I am now completing my fourteenth year here. What is so gratifying about that length of time is that we are now blessed to see the ministry of the school reach fruition in a number of ways, beyond just a suc- cessful graduation. ing jobs and becoming contributing members to our economy. In fact, we have hired several of them to teach in our classrooms, assist with athletics, and guide Center for Excellence activities. As was highlighted in our last issue, many of our alumni are not going at it alone, having married their DHCA high school sweet-heart. What is truly heartwarming is that some alumni are now old enough to be inquiring about kindergar-ten for their children for next fall. To see Decatur Heritage graduates value their education here in such as way as to prompt them to make the same choice for their children is both thrilling and humbling.

Of all we have and all we have experienced as a school, people are the most special blessing of all. Ultimately, we are in the people business. Seeing these alumni and their children is a tangible reminder that our calling as a school is not solely the transmission of information or even the equipping of them for a career. We are here to address the whole person, intellectually, physically, and spiritually in order to prepare them for lives of impact. We are so blessed to be able to witness the fruit of that preparation, years and even generations down the line, and for that we are truly thankful.

HERITAGE HEADLINES

Kevin and I moved to Decatur in 2007 as newlyweds and researching schools for future children was not even a thought in our minds. He and I both attended very rural, small public schools and we assumed we would send our children to public schools. In fact, I believe I even stated I would never send my child to private school. You know what they about saying “never!” Fast forward to February 2012 to Sadie’s birth and, as all parents understand, holding your child in your arms is life changing. We knew at that moment we would do everything in our power to make the best decisions for Sadie.

When Sadie was around 2 or 3, I was working from home one day and went out to eat at Five Guys. A few tables from where I sat were a group of teenage boys in baseball uniforms. I noticed they were from DHCA. These boys carried themselves with such class, kindness and confidence that they stood out to me. At this point in our lives we had not started fully researching schools and we did not know very much about DHCA. However, after watching these boys during lunch I knew I had to check out DHCA. I spoke to Kevin and I made an appointment with Mrs. Murray. I toured the school and felt such peace. Mrs. Mur-ray spoke to me about God first, others second and that struck such a deep cord with what we wanted for Sadie. God blesses each of us so we can bless others in His name.

I went home and spoke to Kevin and he agreed to check out the school when the time was right. Mrs. Murray was amazing to answer any questions we had during the years we waited for Sadie’s shadow day. Kevin and I toured the school again and excellence and pride seem to surround us. The well-kept campus, clean floors, organized classrooms and small class sizes made such an impression on both of us. After our walk-through, we knew DHCA was the best place for Sadie.

We only have our little ones with us for 18 years before college and it was important to us to have a partner in Sadie’s education and spiritual life. The world is constantly telling us, especially girls, that we should derive our worth from worldly items. However, as parents, we want to instill in Sadie that her worth is derived from His love for her! She is a Daughter of the King! Proverbs 31:25 states, “She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.” We know we have a full partner in teaching Sadie how to use her God-given gifts to honor Him and we are so blessed to have the opportunity to be part of the DHCA family.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHTMy name is Aaron Reid, a graduate from the 2011 class. You may also know me as the son of one of the Lower School teachers, Mrs. Leah Reid. After my graduation, I continued my education at Calhoun Community College but decided to pursue my dream of serving our country. In 2013, I enlisted into the United States Marine Corps, and I am proudly still serving this great nation. I am now a sergeant and launcher chief, and am responsible for many actions and procedures to ensure the safety of the launch crew . My occupational specialty is a HIMARS (High Mobility Artillery Rocket System) operator, which is a vehicle mounted ground-to-ground rocket and missile launcher.

Much of my life has drastically changed in the few years since graduating from Decatur Heritage. My life has been blessed with many adventures through the Marine Corps, marriage, and children but one thing that remains constant is my faith in God. He has opened so many doors and provided for me and my fam-ily at every turn. “Look at the birds. They don’t plant or harvest or store food in barns, for your heavenly Father feeds them. And aren’t you far more valuable to him than they are?” Matthew 6:26.

I will be forever grateful for the time I spent at DHCA. The time I spent there helped mold my Christian foundation and strengthen my faith. Without that preparation for the world I received, I would not have been able to live my life for God.

Third Grade had a blast celebrating the 103rd day of school by releasing balloons and enjoying a yummy treat.

The Kindergarten classes were having way too much fun dressing up as spies to commemorate the 100th day of school. That same week they kept the party going by dressing up as pirates and princesses.

First grade had a great time celebrating the first 101 days of school by dressing up as 101 year olds. Seeing the little ones parading through the school in elderly attire was fun for everyone at school.

HERITAGE HIGHLIGHTS

The Mission, Vision and Values of Decatur Heritage Christian Academy

In the eight months I have been working at Decatur Heritage Christian Academy, I have come to realize there is a lot that I didn’t know about our school. Like me, you may not be aware of all of the great things that makes up our school. Through this newsletter article, I would like to provide you with information about Decatur Heritage. I believe a good place to start is by sharing the mission, vision and values of DHCA. I am sure this is something you have read before but it is a good reminder of who we are and the driving force behind what we do. This mission, this vision, and these values are supported by and provide the rationale for our tuition and fund raising efforts. It’s why I do what I do at DHCA!

The mission of Decatur Heritage Christian Academy is to assist families by providing their children with an education that is excellent and which instills Biblical principles to guide their lives. As DHCA fulfills its mission, it will stand as a lighthouse to those seeking a Christ-centered place of excellence in academics, activities and athletics – a place from which students can then launch into adult life equipped with the character and skills to navigate successfully.

As DHCA endeavors to fulfill its mission and realize its vision, our ministry shall be characterized by a four-fold commitment:

1.) A commitment to spiritual and scholastic excellence. With the Scripture as the basis of our teaching, we endeavor to motivate our students to excel spiritually and scholastically. In striving for this ideal we are determined to utilize innovative technologies and to be highly selective in the curricular materials we choose. 2.) A commitment to Christ-centered education.Believing that Jesus is Lord of all life, we will communicate His love and His character to every student. We will be sensitive to His lordship and leading and dedicated to His call in our life as educators. 3.) A commitment to integrity. We believe that Christians must live honestly and responsibly and that we must emphasize this priority to our students. 4.) A commitment to relationships. We are committed to building the strongest possible relationships with our school families, the churches to which they belong and the community in which we all live. As leaders we recognize the need to be responsive to needs and to foster genuinely interactive communication.

If you have suggestions for topics you would like for me to cover in this newsletter, please let me know. You can reach me by email at [email protected] or by calling 256-351-4275.

Did You Know?

It is already spring! We have one last quarter of high school left. It is the home stretch and we are so close to being finished, making it tough to get through these last few weeks. With the senior cruise coming up soon, along with spring break and spring sports getting started, there is almost no time to stop and think. The spring is always a busy time, but especially during senior year. Everyone is trying to soak up the last few memories of high school and still maintain focus on the task at hand - actually finishing out high school. Now is the time to live it up and not waste a moment. Let’s enjoy each other and the last of our high school careers and leave here knowing we made an impact. Remember, glorify God in all we do and celebrate the blessings He has given us.Garret Buckner,

The DHCA Shooting Team is having a lot of success and it is great fun to be a part of. The 2018 season kicked off in February and will include state-level tournaments throughout the SE as well as a national tournament in Sparta, IL.

HERITAGE PREVIEWA First Hand Look at the Heritage Difference

Do you realize that YOU, as a part of the Decatur Heritage family, are the BEST source of advertising to promote Decatur Heritage? A wealth of validity and credibility is conveyed as you relate your experience and invite your family, friends, fellow church members, and business associates who are considering school options for the upcoming school year. An early introduction to see “Decatur Heritage in action” will help them as they discern their school options. Visiting the school and scheduling a shadow day for their student allows parents to see what is unique about the school and prospective students can experience a Decatur Heritage school day. Once the parents have previewed the school and the student has shadowed for a day, the enrollment process may begin. Please invite your family and friends who might consider or who are considering enrolling their children in Decatur Heritage to drop by anytime Monday through Friday 8:30am to 2pm to tour the campus, see Decatur Heri-tage in action, and talk with an administrator. No appointment is necessary.

We look forward to meeting many prospective parents and students as the 2018-2019 enrollment process begins!
